After a small zipper mishap left my favorite cocktail dress out of commission, I shopped around on Yelp to find just the right place to bring it for repair. Enter US Tailors. Because of the color they had to special order the zipper, but 2 weeks after I dropped it off my dress was as good as new again and you would never even know it had work done. It seemed a little pricey at $22 and they are cash only which is a big pain, hence 4 stars. But overall a great experience. read more

I've had several items altered here (mostly dress shirts, and a couple of simple blazers with non functioning sleeve buttons). I brought in a brand new blazer to have the sleeves shortened, and this time it has functioning buttons, which usually means that the alteration has to be made from the shoulder, or the buttons will be moved in a precise manner where it doesn't look, "janky as f##k". In this case it would have required alteration from the shoulders because the sleeve button holes have some subtle accented stitching around it. Moving the buttons up a half inch would have made it look pretty shite. I trusted that as tailors they would know how to execute this properly as to not deliver an ugly product. Fast forward a week at pick up time... Instead of altering from the shoulder they decided to just move the buttons up. Which isn't ideal, but wearable if done right. Well... They folded over one of the button hole stitches so it was visible in the cuff area, they did not stitch the buttons back on straight or even in line with the sleeves, and when I asked them about it they became instantly defensive. They ended up "fixing it" by undoing the sleeve shortening, reattaching the buttons to the original locations (meanwhile forgetting to repair the inside of the sleeves rendering the buttons now non functioning), and I can't even remember what else they mucked up. I will upload pictures when I get the chance. Oh, I still had to pay for the whole thing. Paid to get my jacket sleeves tailored, untailored, and returned to me in a state that is much less wearable than it was originally. Like I've said, I've been here several times and the previous visits have gone well and they were accommodating. But based on this last experience, I won't bother bringing business back to them. Went here per the suggestions of other Yelpers and the great reviews it got. Did not disappoint! Julie (owner) did a great job on a new pair of jeans I needed hemmed and another pair that another place did a S*#&! job on. Very friendly and honest as well. My GF actually came there before I did to get a dress altered but she was up front with her saying that it couldn't be done b/c of how it was made. That kind of honesty is appreciated! She didn't try to make a quick buck and force a bad job on something nice. They close at 6 during the weekday (not bad for after work pickup or drop off) and only take cash! I couldn't find anything I disliked about this place. I brought in my custom made 1950 Houston Buffaloes replica wool jersey I had bought from Ebbets Field Flannels. Being a mail-order site, I had easily bought a size too large, and almost felt like I had wasted $200 until I took it here. Once Julie got her hands on it, she did a very quick type of fitting, and asked me to come back in a week. i was skeptical that she would be able to do something that looked proper, but I was so wrong. When I came back next week, I was surprised to have something that fit perfectly, but also looked like it had been made like that to begin with. I would've gladly paid twice what I did here. It's always nice to know that you have a quick, reliable tailor nearby. Seeing as we just moved back into the area, the hubbs needed a coat (white coat, in fact :P) to be tailored so it wouldn't look so boxy. When he went to go drop it off, the lady went (pinch pinch) "Okay, I got it," and that was it! Hubbs went back the next day to pick it up, and it fit like a glove. I've had two great experiences with this business. The first one didn't require any work on their part, so I waited to review them until I actually needed an item of clothing fixed. The first time I went to U S Tailors, I needed a pair of slacks hemmed; I'd just bought the pants for a job interview. I hadn't bothered to try on both the new pants and the new high-heeled shoes I had also purchased. When I came out of the changing room, I realized that the shoes were just high enough that the pants didn't need any hemming. The lady, who I think was called Julie, agreed. She took one look and said, "It's perfect--you don't need it hemmed." I was impressed that she was honest and didn't try to take my cash. I wanted to write a 5-star review then and there, but decided I should probably wait until I could see the quality of her work. That happened a few days ago when another pair of work pants (for the job I ended up getting from that interview!) separated at the back waistline. It's not like I was walking around the office with my caboose hanging out or anything, but the hole definitely needed to be fixed. I brought them here and left them for a few days (not sure if they have next-day service, but it wasn't urgent so I didn't ask). When I came back to pick up my pants, Julie charged me only five dollars--five dollars! I don't know what the going rate is for this sort of thing, but wow. When I got home I checked out the pants and while I'm not an expert in sewing, it looks pretty solid. I don't think it will be coming apart again anytime soon. The only downside to this place is that they close at 6 PM, so it might be hard for me to drop off and pick up things after work during busy times. However, I liked everything else about this place, especially the friendly and helpful Julie. I'll definitely be going back as needed, and would highly recommend it. read more

I love julie! I had my wedding dress altered and bustled at another tailor shop but when I was practicing dancing in my dress at home, the bustle came out. How embarrassing. So i went back to the tailor to fix it but even after she fixed it, it still didnt feel secure. I told that tailor to make it more secure but she assured me it was--but I didnt trust her. With 2 weeks left until the wedding, I went to US Tailor and asked her to clean up the damage. Julie told me the bustle was in the wrong place anyway and that I needed 3 hooks instead of the one hook that the previous tailor had placed. She told me to go back to that tailor and have her fix it so she wouldnt have to charge me additional money but i told Julie to just do it. She bustled it within a week and it never came out during my wedding--and we danced a lot!! Will be coming here for my alterations from now on! read more

I am disappointed to see some one-star reviews. I have had nothing but EXCEPTIONAL service from Julie and after picking up my newly tailored black holiday dress I had to write a review. I've gone to her for a variety of tailoring issues: letting out the hem in some khaki pants, sewing a tear in a silk shirt, turning my flared jeans into the slim legged jeans, taking in 3-4 inches from some fabulous floral shorts, and also taking 3-4 inches in from the body of a black holiday dress that has boning in it. All of these items turned out perfectly and I'm so pleased with the work and will continue to return for any other tailoring needs. Shop is cash only, and Julie usually lets you dictate when your items are ready (within reason). I'm not sure how her prices compare to other places. Also, I'd call ahead of time to double check your items are ready/the shop is open. Usually they are, but the shops a mom and pop type shop so you might experience unexpected delays. read more

All righty. Here we go. Super long review. Psyche! Not really. Why /did/ I give this place a 5-star rating though? The practicality, bluntness, constructive criticism, and invaluable advice the ladies give here are amazing. I came in here with my S.O. hoping to get a suit tailored. (He received the suit as a gift from a friend; it was not measured to his size, but it was a super nice suit, so he decided it was better to tailor it.) Upon a cursory observation, the lady told him that it wasn't worth it to tailor. She proceeded to point out all parts of the suit that were too long, too wide, etc, and calculated a cost that he would incur with a tailoring. Wow. Price was over $100. Then she advised us that it would be more practical to buy a new suit than to get the current one tailored, as "a new suit always looks better than a tailored". True to the exact words echoed by my mother and her friends (who have all hemmed clothing before). The lady proceeded to /measure/ out my S.O.'s size and gave us the measurements so that he could get a suit, ready-made, at a shop that /would/ be his size, that would not need any tailoring. All this advice and the measurements for free? I'll take it any day. read more

Slight language barriers some time, but small price to pay for great tailoring. I had suit pants that didn't look like it matched my jacket at all, in terms of cut. I had asked them to taper the leg, form the thigh and drop, hem the length, and take in the waist. Basically a new pant.... After picking them up and fitting them, they were still a bit long and they didn't hesitate to fix them for me on the spot. In fact, they made them shorter twice, just to make sure that they don't go too short in one swoop. Perfect customer service. This is a cash only place, fyi, but you do get a bottle of water for waiting. Also, if you're trying to pick up your clothes during rush hour after work.....good luck. Traffic in this area is crazy ridiculous. It took me nearly and hour to get here from downtown. read more

I didn't want to lose precious time getting my clothes altered more than once or to receive my clothes a few inches shorter than it should be. Therefore, I chose this shop because of the high ratings and I wanted a place that was efficient and accurate. I brought my bridesmaid dress in to get it hemmed and taken in. After I dropped off the dress it was ready in 5 days. I was so relieved when I picked up my dress and it fit perfectly! I definitely recommend this place if you want your clothing to be altered correctly the first time. It can be pricey, but saves the trouble in the long run. read more

I've been to several tailor places after moving to Houston and can finally say I've found one I am happy with. They are honest with you about what should and shouldn't be done with clothing which is SO rare. I brought in some pants that I adore but somehow acquired some large stains and I was debating about adjusting them to be shorts. The lady told me the pants were too cute to shorten and told me how to just bleach them myself and make them tie-dye. She has tailored everything from casual shirts to bridesmaid dresses and the prices are reasonable (cash only though). I have never been disappointed with her work and it is always completed in a very timely manner. There is always a parking spot available in front and I never have to wait long to pick up my clothes or try them on for tailoring. Totally recommend this place! read more

They charge relatively cheap prices (considering you're in the middle of West University area) and they won't rip you off. I've gone there more than once and was either told that they can't do what I wanted or it's not worth the money. The lady even measured me for free when I needed specifications for a custom made suit to buy online (Black Lapel and Indochino). Note that they only take cash (like many mom and pop asian establishments lol). So be prepared for that. As far as quality, they've only done simple tasks for me so I couldn't really rate them on something complicated like taking in a suit or something. read more

I have been looking for a tailor and after "shopping around" on Yelp, I decided to give this place a try. The location is great for where I live in the Med Center/borderline West U area of town and the prices are even more reasonable for this area. I went in with two dresses (one casual, one for work), a pair of red chinos, and a pair of brand new jeans and asked for different alterations on each. My casual dress needed to have the neckline taken up, the work dress needed a snap in the neckline to give me more coverage, my chinos needed the waist taken in since I had recently lost weight, and my jeans needed an original hem because I had to buy a regular length rather than short length which I typically prefer. At first I was somewhat unsure of how the alterations would look because Julie was just pinning once or twice per garment and I have been hard to fit, but everything came out PERFECT. She even did a great job of keeping the original hem of the pant at a specific length since I had not washed the jeans yet and wanted to leave room in case they shrink in the future. All of this was only $60 and I was happy to give this much for great work on clothes that never fit right but I loved to wear. Now I feel like they are worth $100s more in my wardrobe. I told Julie I am sending all my friends here and that I will be looking for anything that needs a better fit for her to help me with in the future. I'm so thankful people's reviews persuaded me to try this place and I hope other people have a good experience there as well! read more

I have had a bridesmaid dress, suit jacket, men's shirt, and cocktail dress tailored here. Every item has been tailored perfectly and finished very quickly! My most recent experience involved taking a bridesmaid dress in at the sides and up at the hem. I was in a bind because of issues receiving the dress and was worried I would have to pay an outrageous price for rush alterations. Not here! I got my dress in 3-4 days without even asking for rush, and it was perfect. To make a sweeter experience sweeter, I brought a suit jacket on the same day and that was brought up at the same time. Very happy! The owner does a good job of fitting and pinning you while asking how you want the garment to look and feel. The service has always been great for me, although you might need to wait if you go at peak hours. read more

Ms. Julie is super nice and does a great job with everything I have asked for. I've gone to her for bridesmaid dress and pants alterations. She takes cash only, but will let you know how much you owe before you leave. Generally, it costs $40 to hem bridesmaid dresses and $10 for denim jeans. She's very honest with you as well if you ask for her opinion. Update: I've taken three bridesmaid dresses for alterations here and I've been satisfied every time. Ms. Julie has been accommodating with all of my requests. For regular dresses, she charges $25 for hems. Most recently I went to her to get my wedding dress altered. I'm moving to a different state in a month and I didn't want to deal with finding a new trustworthy seamstress. I appreciate that she's going to try to finish the alterations in a month given all the work that needs to be done: sides taken in (the dress I have is one size too big and the bodice has lace and beading details) + shoulder straps taken up + hem (2 layers of inner lining and 3 layers of tulle) + hemming the train to floor length = $450 + tax. At first I thought that $450 was an exorbitant amount to pay for alterations but considering the bodice details and the amount of layers (there's so much fabric!), I can see why it would cost that much. At first, it was going to be more than I was willing to pay (I am a student) and Julie offered up a few other places I could look, which was thoughtful. After talking with her a bit she was very generous and made a deal with me for a great price! She had the dress done in less than a week and it was beautifully hemmed just the way we had talked about. I pretty much love Julie and US Tailors. I was referred here by one of my bridesmaids when trying to find someone to hem my wedding dress which the skirt was just 3 layers of tulle and the lining. I went to a nearby tailor that was recommended by the store where I got my dress. I was quoted $250 which I thought was RIDICULOUS. When planning a wedding, just saying the word "wedding" instantly makes everything cost 3x more. I drew the line at getting my dress HEMMED. I literally needed no other alterations was a relatively simple wedding dress, skirt had no embellishments and no train. I got another quote for $40, but they didn't seem interested or care about me or my dress. Finally, I went to see Julie. She was sweet and was very knowledgeable on HOW it needed to be hemmed. She even told me to go to the place that gave me the cheapest quote because she understood that having a wedding is costly and every dollar spent matters. After talking with her, I was comfortable spending a little bit more to have my dress altered by Julie and her crew. I got it back 2 weeks after I dropped it off and it was PERFECT. She gives you the exact dollar amount of your alterations before you leave on your ticket and makes sure you know she doesn't take any card payments. She is honest and wouldn't do anything that would jeopardize your clothes and does it for a pretty reasonable price especially for the area. I've seen brought another dress there, and she did a great job with that as well. From my visits, I've noticed that there are many repeat and loyal customers that call her by name when they come in as if they've been going there for years. I think my experience with US Tailors says something about the service and people who work there. I went in to US Tailors to get my first suit tailored. Since this is my first suit, I was not very sure how it should fit. I put it on and came out of the dressing room. The woman working there was incredibly friendly, and she told me no alterations were necessary. I have used this tailor for years and referred many people. Will never use again. Owner in the past was nice and pleasant. Left multiple pairs of leggings and asked for two darts totaling 11/2 inches. Instead she took in the seam 11/2 inches. No big deal I said I will pay you for them but that is not what I wanted. She proceeds to attempt to convince me that's what I said. Even after my saying this is not what I said no biggie. Let's be clear about the ones I am leaving today as to what I want. At no point did I ask her to redo the ones she had all ready done. At no point did I dispute being willing to pay her in full. She got rude and gave me back the five pairs I was leaving today. Should you ever have a misunderstanding or dispute no willingness to admit oh I misunderstood but it will still fit. Awful customer service and rude for no reason. Awful experience. I was especially impressed that when I did not have cash to pay her (they don't except credit or debit cards) she let me walk out of the door with the altered dress and told me to pay her some other time.
