My wife and I used to come here fairly regularly before the pandemic and really enjoyed their food. We returned for the first time since the pandemic yesterday and found that the physical layout had not changed but the menu had slightly. They used to post specials on a board at the entrance of the restaurant. That's no longer there so I ordered the spinach masala dosa which I believe was on the specials board previously. However now they have a spinach masala dosa and a sag paneer dosa as well. The later is spinach and cheese cubes. The presentation was the same as before but the taste was different and was too salty. I felt that they had probably changed chefs since we last came. Similarly, my wife ordered the okra curry dish. That flavor was also different and too salty as well. Previously, one could taste the individual vegetables distinctly, but not now. I asked our server where the chef was from and she said Nepal. The previous chef was either Indian or Nepalese. Our server had only been there 10 months so she was not aware of the changes since the pandemic. Anyway, we were disappointed in the food they were serving currently, very disappointed. We might try again to see if this was a one off dining experience. My true rating is 3.5. read more

Small restaurant that is hidden a bit, but the food is delicious. I have gone here twice and have loved it each time. This is a South Indian restaurant, serving huge dosa. I love their sambar and legitimately could drink it. I got the dosa with potatoes and onions. My partner is South Indian, and she always said you can't really go wrong with the classic potatoes though. If you've never had South Indian food, then give this place a try. It was our first time here and I kind of have mixed reviews. The food was great! We ordered a masala dosa, spring masala dosa, madras coffee and a plate of idlis. It was the best south indian by far m. The coconut chutney was so authentic that it just felt like eating pure coconut! the dosa was crispy and the filling was so tasty! Oh the sambhar!! not like the watery lentil soup served at any other restaurants. Price wise also it was great! the only complain or concern i have was the cleanliness of the place, especially at the times of a pandemic. The restroom was dirty, the floor was not kept clean. Ordered Idli with vada : Nothing on the plate was fresh. The idli felt like it had baking soda in it and the vada tasted old. The coconut chutney was right put of the fridge and tasted sweet. The sambar was watery Also ordered chapathi with Avial: Boy I was so disappointed. The avial didnt have regional inclination to it. It even had edamame and that was bizarre . I ordered the chole bhature on DoorDash and it was phenomenal. The bhature came wrapped nicely in a foil so it was still very hot when I got it. The yogurt that came with it was great as well and the chole had lots of flavor and was even topped with red onion. Definitely recommend over most the Indian spots in Berkeley! read more

This place is a hole in the wall. Don't get me wrong..hubby and I live for hole in the walls type places...they usually have the best food. This was not the case. This is the first time that I was lead astray with the yelp reviews. The service was okay. Nothing to brag or criticize about. There was a lot of noise (metal plate banging) coming from the kitchen. The server was friendly. I rarely crave Indian food but for some reason I was craving Dosas! So the food...the food is the blandest South Indian food...EVER! Everything was on the sweet side as if they added sugar to offset the spicy. The flavors were not pronounced. The presentation was almost like they had given up. When my husband who is caucasian complains that this food is far from authentic and he is right...Berkeley, we have a problem! I ordered chai was told that they had run out of chai. Wait..what? What self respecting Indian place runs out of chai. This should have been a sign of things to come. Hubby had the spinach masala dosa, I had the rava masala dosa and we split the korma puri. Like another yelper mentioned, the food was not hot. The next day, hubby and I both had upset stomachs. Needless to say we won't be returning. Let me tell you about the Masala Dosa - it is a delicate crepe that comes with savory sauces on the side. The Masala Dosa was not spicy nor was it sweet. It was a savory dish that was wonderfully paired with three different sauces. In my opinion, I truly liked the sauce on the left hand side (apologies for not knowing the name of the sauce) as it really brought out the authentic flavors of the Dosa and didn't overpower it. Additionally. the portion was HUGE and that made me pretty happy because it was definitely worth the price I paid! Besides the dishes, the restaurant is located across a Trader Joes and I (believe) that parking is street parking - but don't hold me accountable to the parking situation since I walked there! read more

Udupi Palace is a vegetarian South Indian restaurant known for their Dosas and Uthappams. Dosas are crepe like and made with fermented batter while Uthappams are thicker like pancakes also made with a fermented rice batter. The website mentions a lunch buffet, but be forewarned, there isn't one at the Berkeley location. Only the center 1/2 is filled with the potatoes which still fills me up and I can rip off pieces of the crispy crepe for dipping into the sauces. The potatoes and onions were flavorful and just lightly spiced. The Idly was dense compared to other visits and I didn't enjoy it. The Vada / donut was great. Crispy outside and warm moist inside. Once again I say.... that was a LOT of food!!!!!!! Service is slow. That being said we were greeted promptly and then visited by no less than three staff during our lunch. They did take care of us. I ordered Sag Paneer, cuz that's what I always get. It was SO fresh... it actually tasted like spinach! Also there was a boatload of cheese cubes. It was GOOD! Mark got one of the Dosas. I don't remember which one, but my goodness, it was enough to feed a family of four! Seriously! And it was delicious. We put the leftovers in a box and made sure they were readily available for one of the homeless in the neighborhood. I liked that there was no rush. I really enjoyed the food. We are not locals, so can't compare to other Indian restaurants, but compared to Indian restaurants in Cincinnati... the food was fantastic. Now don't get me wrong. Cincinnati has some amazing Indian restaurants. I'm not sure why... but Cincinnati has a TON of Indian restaurants. Anyway... Came here with some friends and my boyfriend. I had number 47 and it was yummy. Never tried it before until I came here. Was also my first time trying the Mango Lassi. I love mangoes, so obviously I really liked the drink. Creamy. The restaurant is not too fancy, but has very nice decorations. Not that, that's important, just thought I'd put it out there. I've heard about this place for a while for its authenticity and inexpensive fare. Came here for lunch on a Sunday with my parents and sister. Dad got vegetable biryani, mom the bisi bele bhath, my sister the special rava dosa and for me the kadai Bhindi. I love the way okra is made with all the spices in Indian cuisine, but it's also my go-to for evaluating an Indian restaurant. The okra was very salty and oily, unfortunately. It helped that it came with naan, but I was still a little disappointed. 3/5 My sister's rava dosa was positively stuffed to the brim with potatoes and chicken. I think she enjoyed hers, but had to take the rest to go. My dad really liked his biryani even though he can't take that much spice. And my mom liked her soup, which tasted simple and a tad starch-y, like the kitchen had added too much cornstarch to make the broth thicker... I expected more from a place that has a really good average Yelp rating and high recommendations from a few friends, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. I don't much enjoy writing reviews like this, but I kinda have to, because otherwise I'll accidentally walk in again, because I'm a sucker for South Indian cuisine, and especially dosa. And this way, Yelp will show me that I've written a review here, and it will remind me to keep walking. :-( Now don't get me wrong. I don't think that anything we had was actually *bad*, just not so good. That's why it gets the second star. And if you are in the area and are looking for vegetarian / vegan, it might be a good choice for you. Samosa Chat - Seemed to be one samosa and a lot of channa (chickpea). The channa was well cooked, nice and tender. But I wanted a dish that was mainly Samosa, not one that was mostly channa, so a disappointment. Not nearly as good as Samosa Chat I've had elsewhere. But if you want a bunch of channa with a Samosa thrown in, I suppose you would be happy with this. Udupi Combo - I had the combo with the Mysore Masala Dosa. The combo also includes idly and medhu vada. Since the dosa was the main event, I'll start there. The curried potato filling was nice enough, but not really any better than anywhere else I've had the dish, though probably in somewhat larger quantity than many. The dosa itself was ok, but none of it was very crispy. The main texture I got was "chewy". And the chutneys and sambar were pretty uninspired. The idly I found I liked better than I expected. It had a very subtle flavor. The texture was similar to the sort of steamed "sticky toffee pudding" I've had in Ireland, but of course this was savory and not at all sweet. Kinda chewy / gummy. I wouldn't want to make a meal of it, but I had several bites. The star of the dish was the medhu vada. I've never had one done so well. If I had just ordered a plate full of these, this would have been a 4 star review. But don't get me started on fried dough, a major weakness of mine. And my wife would probably have asked me about the wisdom of a choice of a plate of savory fried donuts. sigh. Aloo Mutter - My wife ordered this, and neither of us were impressed in the least. Just kinda meh. Came with a papad (see below) and a poori that was pretty good. Papad - The Aloo came with one, and we ordered a side of 3 more, because we really like them. Usually. These were more like shrimp chips than papad we've had anywhere else. Again, not particularly bad, but not good and not at all what we expected. Paratha - Not good. Not the kind of flakey layery bread we have come to expect, and seemed kinda dried out. Not pleasant. Masala Tea - I liked it. Not particularly different from ones I've had elsewhere. My wife had a small bottle of Taj Mahal beer, which we like. Carrot Halwa - I am a big sucker for carrot halwa. I learned how to make it in an Indian cooking class many years ago and have made it a few times. And I always order it when I see it on a menu. Doing so here was a big mistake. I'd describe it as "gritty". The menu says, "Shredded carrot cooked with sugar and cream.", but I could swear that there was something else in there. It's like they mixed in some kind of wheat grits. Dosa was really good. The potato stuffing was sooo good! Vada was ok, not that great and had weird shaped idli! My husband ordered a chilly cheese dosa which was okayish! The ambiance was like any other Indian restaurant in Bay Area. You get the hit of the spices once you enter the restaurant. I didn't like the sambar. It hardly had pulses and was too watery. I was drawn to this place because of all the reviews of the sampler. But the thing about any sampler is, while you get to try out the different offerings of the restaurant, there's a good chance that one or two of the dishes will not be good. In this case, four of the offerings were not very delicious. Two of them were soups and tasted like canned tomato soup. I got the House Curry dosa (curried spring veggies on top of a dosa) for around $12 and the portion is VERY generous. I came in hungry and was so full at just halfway. I'd definitely recommend bringing a friend to share this with...or you can have two meals! The food itself was also pretty tasty. It seems to be that southern Indian food is some type of main entree that you dip sauces with. I got the dosa filled with with spiced potatoes. It came with a coconut chutney, and a few others. The star of the show though was the coconut chutney. It was sweet and savory and cut the denseness of the dosa. The dosa itself was like a crunchy thin crepes stuffed with potato, which made it really filling. Depending on how much you can handle your spice, you can request it to make it spicer or less. I think the real stickler of this place is the service. The food took long and the utensils weren't clean. The waiter also didn't take any notes on our owner, and came back multiple times to confirm. Overall, it's a great place to try southern food, but far from perfect when it comes to service. Tips - Don't be afraid to ask for more chutney, especially the coconut one! Free refills on dips. Udupi is great for a few reasons: it's open late (rare in Berkeley), it's affordable, it's a lot of food, AND when I went, they were playing country music (in an Indian restaurant!). Ordering a sample platter, Dosa, and cup of soup were enough for a meal for two as well as a meal of leftovers. The sampler platter was a great way to try many different dishes, all of which were tasty, especially the sweet dessert pudding. I ordered a veggie dosa which actually came with two dosas- a pleasant surprise and something I'd never seen before.
