After three deliveries from Vegan n' Chicken I was satisfied that this could possibly replace my longtime favorite Aangan. I walked in on a random Saturday at 5pm. My usual to go order of naan and aloo gobi took almost 30m, aloo gobi barely filled half the container and the naan was thin,crispy (not the anticipated pillowy texture) and noticeably smaller. Order barely fed one person. I hope whoever is in the kitchen on the weekend becomes more consistent with all their customers. I'll be returning to Aangan. read more

There are very few restaurants where I find myself venture back to the very next day after trying it for the first time, but Vegan N' Chicken had me hooked after my first bite. I was looking for a simple comfort meal after a long day and decided to try a place. It was around 8:30 and most places in the area were closing at 9 but Vegan N' Chicken happened to be open until 10pm! When I walked in, I immediately was welcomed with 'mom and pop' restaurant vibes. It is a very casual and fairly small restaurant, but it makes for a very comforting experience. You get to seat yourself then they'll bring you a menu. The menu is simple, but also has everything you'd need. They even have a few seafood dishes! While you wait for your food, you can help yourself to their complimentary soup & hot chai. I'll admit I have no clue what the soup is, but it is such a great way to start the meal. Especially with some hot chai too! On day 1 we ordered Lamb Tikka Masala ($14.99), Chana Masala ($9.99), Cheese Naan ($3.99), Rice ($2.99), and Vegetable Samosas ($4.99). The servings were very generous for the price compared to other similar restaurants in Berkeley. We did ask for medium spice level, but it wasn't spicy enough for us so they brought us a plate of onions, peppers, and cucumbers! The Chana Masala was my favorite bite of the night. It was packed with fragrant spices & the garbanzo beans were so tender. The Lamb Tikka Masala was a little bit sweeter than I am used to, but after mixing in some rice or eating it with the cheese naan it was perfect. On day 2, we ordered the Papadum ($2.99), Rice ($2.99), Prawn Vindaloo ($17.99), and Chana Masala ($9.99 - we added paneer to it and didn't confirm how much it was with the paneer). This time we ordered our dishes spicy to see if it was any different. It really was still not spicy at all, but honestly it didn't bother us. It was a great way to be able to enjoy the dishes in their entirety. The prawns in the vindaloo were fairly large and the portion was perfect for two people! They were also not overcooked & still had a nice bounce when biting into it. The Chana masala with the added paneer was a great combination as well. Vegan N' Chicken is honestly a great spot for the college students nearby as well. It's affordable & could easily be split into two meals even if you just order one dish! I gave it two tries. The people seem nice. The free chai is a nice perk. Both times though the food was not good. First it was butter chicken and on the second visit chicken tikka masala. Honestly, they need to hire a good cook. the naan was good, but what passed for chicken tikka masala was a sad tale, indeed. Butter chicken no better. Like a flavorless curry soup with some chicken pieces dropped in. It concerns me that someone wrote the owner keeps the tips. Very reasonable priced with most dishes being in $14-$20 range, given that the soup is complimentary as well as the tea, incredible value and taste at $14-$20. The food service is quick, clean and warm - they even have a warm plate, in winter this is such a nice touch to get food in a warm plate. The ambiance is cozy, warm home-like, clean and professional. I happened to be in Albany and decided to go to the Berkeley location and I was not disappointed. I got the chicken Karahi and curry chicken with vege biryani and me and my son enjoyed it! They just opened the doors for lunch, we ate a late breakfast so this is going to be lunch for my son when he is ready to eat. But the portions were SO small in their small to go containers!!! There wasn't enough for 3 of us and we ordered 3 entrees, rice which you have to buy separately, and naan, which admittedly was HUGE. The food was good. We had the Chicken Karahi, delish and very nicely spiced, Aloo Palak and Veggie Tikka Masala. But so small. At our usual there is more than enough for 3 with leftovers. Spectacular. The restaurant is comfortable rather than fancy, and the prices are really reasonable, so you may not realize walking in just how great this place is. But you are immediately greeted with such hospitality. And the food is next level. Rich, delicious, layered, complex, made with love and skill. The owner/chef started 25 years ago in Manhattan, which makes sense (just really high standards for food and art). We ate from the vegan side of the menu: the special (tofu masala, I wish this were on the menu all the time! But I also want to try several other wonderful looking dal and vegetable dishes), Aloo Gobi, and mixed vegetables. Rice, homemade onion roti. All the vegan dishes are clearly marked in their own section of the menu, as are the vegetarian dishes, and the restaurant is really clear and supportive.
