Finally getting caught up on reviews -- I had detailed notes from this visit but somehow never posted. I stopped in for a late lunch at Ugadi Indian Grill and was seriously impressed. Vibe: Yeah, it's in a strip center (lol), but don't judge a book by its cover. Inside, it's surprisingly nice -- clean, comfortable, and way more inviting than you'd expect from the outside. It had that calm mid-afternoon vibe, perfect for grabbing a quiet meal. Service: Everyone was super friendly and easygoing. My server made great recommendations, checked in just enough, and had a really nice energy about them. You can tell they care about the experience. Ah, I love this place. I've been going here for years because of the food! They have a wide variety of food (including vegetarian options) and my personal favorite: chicken korma. The staff are friendly, the restaurant is clean, and although surrounded by fake plants its still nice. The naan is very tasty as well. A good setting for small families or a date and they have a lunch special where you get to try multiple popular dishes! Ask for a spice above what you want to get a spicer dish in my experience. This is a South Indian restaurant that offers an extensive menu. Signage stated that the owners were opening up a fast food and ice cream place as well. For anyone new to the cuisine, it's not hard to find something satisfying. For someone who does know what they're getting, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better Indian place in Tennessee than this. While nothing fancy, the strip mall location was well decorated and had plenty of seating and plenty of people working there. Spoiled for choice, I went with a mulligatawny soup (the name means something like "pepper water") which was a proper soup with ample lentils, a rich savory flavor, and a bit of rice and some fresh garnishes on top to make every bite interesting. My chikoo milkshake (some sort of melon I think) was addictive. The main dish I ordered-chole bhatura-was actually a slight disappointment as the bhatura can be a giant fried bread that puffs up and looks like about half a basketball, but here they gave me a bunch of little ones. While less impressive to look at, they delivered on taste, with a vigorous tomato-onion chickpea curry clashing beautifully with the fresh bread. It took time to cook these things, but it was nothing crazy and the freshness was worth the wait. I would note that while they had vegan items marked, the dosai are apparently not among them (butter I assume), but for those who can eat them, they're likely impressive. read more

I felt like getting something different, so I chose this restaurant. I got mixed vegetable pakoras and a Mysore dosa. The mixed vegetables in the pakoras all seemed to be onions. I like onions, but I was expecting a mixture of vegetables per description. The dosa with its toppings and the sambar were nothing special. I got delivery and didn't receive the utensils I requested. While it's customary to eat with one's hands in India, it was awkward with a large, weighted quarter-circle that was falling apart. I remember having cylindrical dosas many years ago. 3 stars may be too harsh, but I have some concerns. I've been here twice now. Back to back days and tried different things and the same things. The service had some pros and cons. Some staff were super friendly and some were less than friendly. Probably a translation issue where the server came to take our order and just said "next" and nothing else. "I would like the lamb curry." "Next" "with bullet naan" "next" "that's all" silence..... it was rather funny. Anyway. Day 1 visit resulted in good food all around. I thought the naan was a little pricey for an item that you really must have to enjoy Indian food to its fullest. Day 2 visit we ordered a lot more and branched out. The kebabs were so good that we ordered a second entree of those. However, the 2nd entree was very dried out chicken with several pieces containing bones. I ordered the goat dish and every piece of goat was nothing but bones. It was literally seasoned rice with goat bones, but set me back $17. The other food we ordered was good as expected. So why the 3 star review over 4 stars.... Consistency and quality of product. The consistency on the kebabs was really bad considering one dish came out 10 minutes after the other. And the rice with goat bones was unacceptable. The service is good not great, almost a little strange, and then the prices are a bit high. The food is good though, and I would definitely go back to give it another shot. Definitely worth trying. Maybe I just had a bad night. This was a new spot that opened recently in mboro. At first I was like it would be like any other Indian restaurant. But then my friend recommended it. So we tried it and omg it was great!!! The food was just alright, nothing to rave about. The best thing we had was the chili paneer, which I would compare to an Indian version of sweet and sour chicken but with cheese curds. We would definitely get that again. The samosas were okay. The butter chicken was good, a slightly sweet buttery flavored chicken. The Chana Masada was just alright. It needed something fresh like a squeeze of lime. I was not a fan of chomping down on cloves. My hubby ordered a mango Lassi that was good, but I think it would've been better served cold. One food I have very little experience with is Indian, so I decided to see what all of the hubbub was surrounding Ugadi Indian Grill. I arrived a little before 5pm and Kavya got me seated and a carafe of water while I looked over the menu. Kavya seemed to sense I was lost, came over and spent some time explaining the various dishes, ingredients, spice levels from 0-5, and the various ways the dishes were prepared. I decided to be adventurous and went with the Lamb Vindaloo (#1 on the spice level), Mysore Masala Dosa, and some garlic Naan. When the meal was delivered the fragrances from the plate was incredible. What was very helpful is Kavya then came over and gave me a quick overview on how to combine and eat everything before me. The Lamb Vindaloo had nice spice and the curry had a smooth flavor and when mixed with the rice...it was delicious. I had a lot of fun eating the Mysore Masala Dosa finally getting the hang of breaking the shell, dipping into the potato, and then into a sauce. While I was in shock at the size of it when delivered, I really enjoyed the different textures, flavors, and the sauce in the larger bowl was incredible. It was so good I even poured some of it over rice! I was stuffed and have a decent "doggy bag" to go home with but Kavya brought me a dessert (gratis) called Ras Malai. She said this would help get rid of the spice heat in my mouth and she was right. This dessert is lightly sweet and as soon as I had a couple of bites no more heat. I had the butter chicken and jasmine rice with mild spice, and it was flavorful with a touch of heat. As a girl that's spice tolerance ends at hot Cheetos, I had to ask them to tone down the spice by a lot. I had garlic naan (bread) alongside it, and 2 samosas (which are pastries filled with veggie and meat goodness), and to drink a mango lassi (a sweet mango smoothie like drink with yogurt and cardamom spice). Back in time, Murfreesboro had few choices for Indian food, and most of it was borderline. Now there are several excellent ones, and this restaurant rates at the top of the list. While they specialize in Southern Indian cuisine, I am not that familiar with the different foods from different regions. I planned on having my wife help me, as she does know her way around the menu. I did not have to rely on her as I found a few dishes to try that sounded unique and I was not disappointed. As usual, I will review the food, atmosphere, service and value. Four dishes chosen by myself: Chicken Hot and Sour Soup, my wife's Mirchi Bajji, Ugadi Special Fish Curry, and the Mango Lassi. As I am a big fan of Chinese Hot and Sour Soup, I went for it. Heat level was simply as served, with no option given for mild or spicy. It was great and not like the traditional Chinese version, except it had a spice level and sourness. The heat came from several types of peppers which gave it a different flavor. Vegetables and chicken were cut into smaller pieces, which I like, that fit on the spoon and gave a nice blend of flavors in each spoonful. Chile Relleno in a Mexican restaurant is my wife's favorite. When I saw the Mirchi Bajji, I saw it was an Indian version, called it to her attention, she ordered it and shared one of her four peppers with me. We did not recognized the chile used, but it had moderate heat and a good flavor. They are batter fried green chilies stuffed with onions and spices. The batter was not too thin or too thick and they were served with a nice green dipping sauce. This was another hit. When my fish curry came, my wife wanted to know what kind of fish it was. All I could say was, "I don't know. It is mild, maybe tilapia but cooked to perfection." The curry was unlike what I have ever experienced with Indian food and wonderful Mango Lassi was marked as a favorite on the menu. I wanted something to cut the heat that I asked for. It was a bit too sweet. Big windows brightly lit this corner suite in a former specialty hamburger restaurant. The center bar was reconfigured for their needs. Furniture was nice and there were lots of tasteful appropriate wall decorations. Usually Indian restaurants have a bit of a wait for your food. We showed up for an early lunch, the place was not busy, but the food came out quickly and at a nice, hot temperature. Price wise, this is a prime example of you get what you pay for. The bill was a bit high, but worth the value for the high quality food we got. Now for the real decisions. Will I drive past three other high quality Indian restaurants just to go here again? Probably because they have unique menu items, but I still want to enjoy those closer to home. read more
