4 of us went here last night. We were seated quickly. We ordered 3 bar drinks and a couple non bar drinks along with edamame, pork chop fried rice and popcorn chicken as appetizers. If you want anything brought out together, forget about it. Appetizers were brought out one by one, a few minutes apart. (No drinks yet other than water and a soda). I was told the apps were average. I did have some edamame. Hard to measure that up. Bar drinks were brought out one by one into the dining room intermittently. One took about 20 minutes after asking twice. None of the entrees were brought out together. 3 were rice dishes and the 4th were dumplings. Bu the time the final entree was brought out, the person with the first entree brought out was almost finished. The rice was reeeaaalllly average. Blas and slightly gummy. Not great. I did not partake, but the pork and crab dumplings were probably the best thing in the table, although nothing special. Hopefully the service will improve with time, but I don't think we will be back. read more

My only issue was that the soup dumplings stuck to the parchment paper inside the steam basket, so I had to be extra careful not to tear them and accidentally spill the broth. read more

AWFUL experience!!! Will never ever ever go back. The food does not arrive at the same time and some dishes never came.

Ok so I've tried this place a total of 3 times and each time something is wrong. the food was good, but the service is terrible. for the price you're paying it should not be this bad. I came here twice, once in a group of 8 and once with another person, and both times it took the server 15 minutes to even approach the table. main courses came out before appetizers or even waters, and they got our orders wrong both times. i wish I could say the food is worth the inconvenience, especially as someone who has to drive 45 minutes one way to get there, but it isn't. read more

Tried Ugly Dumpling for the first time this evening. Probably the last time. Overall rating 3/10. Yes, I spoke with the manager. For details on our experience, see below. It's a long post, designed to explain why we were so unhappy with this experience! Arrived about 5:50. Maybe 1/3 of tables occupied. Seated immediately. Waitress Kaya arrived quickly upon being seated. Wanted to give us the opportunity to order appetizers (1/2 off) before happy hour ended in 7 minutes. Splendid! She did not ask if we wanted cocktails also on happy hour. We hadn't planned on them, but may have been tempted with encouragement (not an issue, just an observation). She put order in. Shortly thereafter, she returned to take drink and food order for the 3 of us. One person ordered soup dumpling sample platter and an iced tea with honey and "100% sugar". Second person ordered sample platter. I ordered the spicy pork and shrimp wontons and beef and shishito pepper noodle soup. Appetizers came. Cream cheese rangoons were average. Spring rolls very good. Here's where everything went south. One sampler platter and the soup arrived. The 2 of us started eating. Dumplings were average. Soup was tasty but just above room temperature. About 5 minutes later Kaya checked on us. Said tea would be out shortly. I asked about the dumplings and wontons--one person still without food. She said it's "family style" and the kitchen sends it out when ready. Person with no food ordered pork and shrimp wonton soup to go with the dumplings he had not yet received. A little while later, one person finished their meal. Still did not receive tea. Told Kaya forget the tea, as she was finished eating. Kaya promptly returned with the tea and indicated it was no charge. A server brought the newly ordered soup. After the soups were eaten; still no wontons or the second sampler. We asked to cancel the 2 dishes she said she would if they were not yet made and could give us to-go boxes if they were. She went to check and returned carrying the 2 dishes. I asked for the check. I politely explained how dissatisfied we were with the timing of the meal. I also asked her why we saw people who arrived after us get sampler platters while we waited so long. She said that it is when they are ready in the kitchen and they put the tag on it. Seeing I was not satisfied she said I could talk to the manager. I said that would be wonderful. Manager came. He listened and said that it is served family style and food comes out at different times. He did not seem to care about our concerns or experience. He said they were busy and sometimes there is a back-up. The restaurant was not full and he could not explain why others received the same dish we had waited for. He may have said he was sorry we were not happy but there was no interest or true apology. At least 4 different times servers came to our table with food we did not order that was meant for a different table. Had the manager truly listened and if I thought he was going to try to figure out what happened and try to improve the food preparation/delivery I would probably try them again. I do not know if the kitchen was making things out of order or if the prepared food was sitting under a warmer waiting for the waitress to pick it up or if there was some other issue. Been here 2 times so far, the food is absolutely amazing! Everything comes out fresh and hot, family style. We always get the szechuan pork, chicken, soup dumplings. Also the soy wings and the hot and sour soup are the best ive had ever. Ambiance is super clean and cozy. It has a nice clean modern aesthetic, and the service has been impeccable everytime i go. Make sure to use the chinese vinnegar and hot chili oil cause that really makes it!! I will come here everytime i pass through Richmond :D read more

Meh except for the soup dumplings. The restaurant ambiance is pretty. Went during lunch hours on a Monday. We were seated quickly. However, it took a long while for the waitress to come by to take our orders. Ordered the braised beef soup, chicken noodles, wonton soup, shrimp fired rice and pork/chicken dumplings. The soups are small, like small cereal bowl small and costs $15. Definitely not worth it...the meat wasn't very tender and it was a little on the sour spectrum. Really disappointed. Chicken noodles...just skip it. Not good at all...also small cereal bowl. Couldn't finish because it didnt taste great. Shrimp rice was very under salted. Added soy sauce and salt to make it taste passable. This type of food should not be very hard to make tasty. A big no for me. read more

I visited the newly opened Ugly Dumpling during lunch rush, with a 30-45 minute wait, but the kind staff made it manageable. We tried the shrimp fried rice, orange chicken, fried pork chop, spring rolls, and pork soup dumplings--all tasty and served quickly. Highlights were the flavorful shrimp fried rice and the rich, savory pork soup dumplings. Despite the crowd, the great food and friendly service made it worth it! read more

3/28/25 visit. There are still some new business kinks I'm assuming need to be worked out. The food was fine not amazing not bad,it was fresh though. But my partners entrée came out before the appetizers, yet the rice for his dish didn't come out until after the apps. My drink (hot green jasmine tea) didn't come until half way through our meal and our server I assume forgot to put my dumpling order in as we had to ask about it and at that point we were almost finished anyways. Everyone was very nice and friendly but it was a little weird when the person who brought our check (not our server) just hovered over us waiting for payment instead of circling back around to give us a second to look over the check. I joined a friend at the Ugly Dumpling in Willow Lawn (Richmond) and wasn't impressed with the food or service. I order hot & sour soup, which I order at any Chinese restaurant. It had a layer of oil on the top. Once I could get below the oil layer, the soup was bland without the range of flavors and textures I expect. I exchanged the hot & sour soup for wonton soup. The broth was watery and without any flavor or spice. The wontons were good but didn't really have strong interest. The scallion pancake was good but lacking in scallions, which contributes a lot to the flavor, and the pan fried pork buns were tasty with the sauce provided. Our server needed reminding a couple of times including asking her to bring my friend's main dish after all of my food was on the table for about 5 minutes. It was lunch and the restaurant was a little busy but not busy enough to warrant these types of mistakes. I really enjoy Chinese and Asian food. If that's what you want, go somewhere else. This is Chinese Lite. One final point, the Suggested Tip at the bottom of the receipt was based on the total of my check BEFORE the cost of the hot and sour soup was deducted and on the total with tax. A few months back I gave this restaurant a five star review. It was a wonderful eatery. The food was delectable the prices reasonable the service outstanding. After I wrote the five star review the staff was wonderfully kind to my Steve and I but they had been nice to us before the review they are just wonderful people. Today September 8th is the day my husband and I decided never to go back. No one told us about the changes in the kitchen. We were expecting the 9.95 lunch special we always got the way the photograph outside the restaurant shows it. Rice or noodles the main dish and two chicken dumplings. My Steve and I ordered the chicken with broccoli without the broccoli. Steve doesn't like the broccoli and I love it but my stomach my no longer does. All we got was the noodles and two chicken dumplings. Where was our chicken. When my husband asked he was told the cooks put it in the white rice or noodles now. There was no chicken in the noodles, or if there was it was too miniscule to be seen by the human eye. 90 percent was miniscule because we couldn't see it. All the way at the bottom of the dish of noodles were three pieces of chicken. They were justvl about invisible because they weren't that big and were hiding in the noodles. We are honest people. We wouldn't have asked for chicken if we had seen the three small pieces at the bottom of the dish. But still we paid for two orders of chicken not three small pieces hiding at the bottom of a dish of noodles. Our waitress then brought one order of chicken not two just plain chicken that was inedible and had none of the seasonings it used to have. The manager said Management decided everything would go into the rice or noodles now it was too much trouble to cook everything separately. Why is it that when something works someone's got to change it. If it ain't broke don't fix it. The manager said If you don't want to come back that's your decision. No one cared that two good stomers were never returning that we weren't satisfied with our experience. I guess people in charge no longer care about customers as people we're nothing more than cash cows. Well they need to be reminded. Customers pay the freight. Without us no one would have a business folks wouldn't have jobs. I would like to personalize this. Would the folks in charge eat this slop that now passes for chicken. We will miss our Ugly Dumpling where the food used to be delicious. We will miss the nice people who work here. Was excited to try for lunch after seeing lots of positive reviews. Server explained that the food comes out as ready which was fine but after 30 minutes only one dish had come out. After our orders were dropped twice leaving the kitchen we were told they were remaking our food. After another 30 minutes watching other tables get their orders only 2 orders of dumplings came out with two more dishes missing. I explained that we had to leave since we had been there for 1 1/2 hours. Server said she could take 30% off the one dish I hadn't received yet. So after almost two hours with having to take 2 items to go they took $3.00 off the bill. Server apologized but no manager came to speak to us. read more

That said, the Beef Stir Fried Noodles were absolutely inedible to the point it was thrown away after 2 bites. Very bland, zero flavor, very mushy. The provided sauces didn't help. Improve on service, overall. We had to wait for the manager on duty to notice, that after some time of being seated, no one had taken our order. We didn't even have drinks in front of us yet. We asked for just waters and he got someone to assist. We placed our whole order right away, including (1) appetizer - the cucumber salad. After all our (cooked) food came out, except the appetizer I asked the waitress about it but she responded that the ordered plates come out as they're completed (cooked) from the kitchen. I ordered a cucumber salad which doesn't require any cooking. The table next to us that got seated after us, received their drinks within two minutes of being seated and I noticed they also ordered a cucumber salad and they had already gotten theirs! Unbelievable! The food overall was mediocre. The hot & sour soup had wayyy too much pepper. Even the manager agreed and advised to **order it on the side or with no pepper because they do tend to make it with way too much to begin with but it's the chefs style so he always tends to just order it on the side . Our Friday lunch club picked the Ugly Dumpling because it had been open for two weeks (our minimum time for businesses to work out the kinks). The ambiance was great... we were seated near the glass section where they make the dumplings. I got the dumpling platter and it was delicious! Six different dumplings and all were great. I got the braised beef stew as well and it was just right! Went along with the dumplings and flavored just right.
