Walked in on an early Friday evening. It was not busy at that time and we got seated right away. Service was alright -- not quick but not too slow either. I liked the eggplant fries and three peppers with beef. Both were delicious. Three peppers with beef was flavorful with the right amount of kick (we requested it to be less spicy). Stewed pork in brown sauce and spicy Szechuan cold noodles were okay. Giving this place a 4/5 for their Szechuan food and generous servings though prices are on the higher side.

8/2/25: I posted a review recently about enjoying some Cheng Du lunch leftovers that my husband brought home. Well... I finally made it over to the restaurant for myself. We ordered a spicy beef dish with green peppercorns and the Singapore noodles (pictured). Great combination to split! The noodles tempered the heat from the beef dish while imparting delicious curry flavor. Not ashamed to admit that I just had the leftovers for Sunday breakfast! Yum!!

One of the first places I tried after moving to Richmond and I can confidently say this will be a regular spot. Sichuan food is one of my all time favorite cuisines so I'm always on the prowl for some in any city I'm in. This hit every craving I had. It was the perfect amount of spicy. The crispy chengdu chicken and crispy honey pork was perfectly fried - highly recommend both of these. The mapo tofu and beef chow fun were delicious as well. The pork bao was decent - I typically am not a fan of shredded pork but it was still really good! The only dish that fell flat for me was the xia long bao - which technically isn't even Sichuan so shouldn't have expected to be as good as what you'd get at a dim sum place. Overall found my comfort spot in RVA. Definitely will be frequenting here!!

A great option for Sichuan food! The service is a bit inconsistent sometimes but the food is so comforting it makes it worth it. The best way to eat here is family style where your whole party shares the dishes. My go-to's are the ma po tofu, orange glazed walnut shrimp, sweet and sour pork, and dry fried green beans. There's plenty of seating inside. I've also been here for a work event with 20 people and they gladly accommodated our requests with no issues.

A solid Chinese restaurant with plenty of seating. The menu has a vast array of food options, but it is somewhat expensive. The food is solid, though, but nothing to write home about.

    Hot and Sour Soup

Cheng Du is my absolute favorite Chinese restaurant in the Richmond area. The fried tofu with vegetables and hot and sour soup are to die for. The spicy fried eggplant is great as well. The spicy dishes are really spicy. For a real deal go at lunch and ask for the lunch menu.

I was shopping for some vegetables next door at Asia Market with my friend from Ashland. We suddenly feel hungry. We saw 飄香成都 Cheng Du Chinese Restaurant sitting far end of this quaint strip mall. I decided to do quick research. It seems to be legit, especially it has been reviewed by the world traveling musician Fox E of NYC. According to the waiter, this restaurant has been at this location for 7 years. They have trouble attracting customers because the location is situated far in of the parking lot. Without further ado, we ordered the AYCE hot pot $26.99 per person. They brought fresh meats and veggies and a pot of Sichuan spicy broth and the savory chicken bone broth. Food was plenty just can't takeout. I loved the atmosphere and company. The waiter Pete was very attentive. He kept coming to replace the fuel canister for the propane stove. Because they tried to empty out all of their half-used cans. It was funny how the female employee told Pete to open the doors in Chinese to open all windows as more people just ordered spicy hot pots. We left the restaurant with a smile because the peppercorn oil fragrance got onto our clothes.

We've been dining at Cheng Du for awhile now and they are pretty consistent from visit to visit. It is a welcoming casual atmosphere and usually pretty busy. Service is polite and fast. They offer a wide variety of traditional Szechuan dishes so whether you're in the mood for spicy dishes or something more mild, this restaurant is sure to satisfy your cravings. The food tastes fresh. Serving sizes are generous, we usually have leftovers to bring home They make their bubble tea from scratch and it's delicious! They have a nice patio area for outdoor dining and offer carryout too +.5 Service +1 Food~Taste/flavor/quality +1 Presentation + .5 Atmosphere/vibe +1 Value

Wow, in shock over this order. There is legit no reason to order any Chinese food in RVA other than Peter Chang......except, Cheng Du's popcorn shrimp. It's so out of the way for me and that's literally the only dish I have ever ordered, as everything else is better elsewhere. However, it's been a bit and I can see they are totally lacking in their shrimp department. And before you judge the this pic......Yes, I know it's called popcorn shrimp. However, they used to fry up much bigger shrimp for way less cost and better breading and seasoning. Last time I'll order from them.

This place had a lot of really flavorful, spicy food which so very authentic in terms of Cheng du style food. The owners here were extremely nice and talked with my family. We had ordered a lot and the food was given out in a timely manner. This place is dimmer in a good way and decorated very nicely.

Takeout mapo tofu. Huge portion, super tasty! Plentiful amount of tofu with veggies and scallions mixed through.

Wow! Amazing and authentic Chinese food right here in RVA. I got the mapo tofu (vegetarian - no beef - $3 less). You get the option of steamed white, fried, or brown rice with it. It was SO flavorful with just the right amount of spice/heat. There are veggies and green onions mixed in, and a lot of tofu. The chicken lo mein was also delicious with perfect-sized pieces of chicken and the proportionate amount of veggies. It was on the pricier side, but I will be returning to try new dishes!

I used to go to Peking many many years ago before it…read morewas in the Short Pump area, and the last time I went to Peking was probably 7 or 8 years ago. It sure isn't the good food I remembered. I believe the original was on Grove where EAT Partner's Beijing on Grove is now located. I stopped in for a take-out order. I ordered Gen Tso's Chicken, hot and sour soup, fried rice, pork lo mein and a shrimp spring roll. The General Tso's chicken was awful. The chicken was a mushy clump of cubed, fried chicken. The chicken was no longer crisp (I've brought home or had delivered Gen Tso's and Orange Chicken in which the batter was still crisp, so no excuse for this when I was only about 3 miles from home). The chicken was swimming in a thick, overly sweet sauce that had WAY too much cornstarch. The fried rice *looked* like it would be good, but I have a feeling the dark color was mostly from dark/black soy sauce which mostly gives color to a dish. The rice was literally tasteless. I had to add some low-sodium soy to give it some flavor. The pork lo mein was equally as tasteless as the fried rice. The slices of roast pork were so dry that without dipping it into some sauce (which looked like extra oil on the bottom of the container), it got stuck in my throat. I make my own roast pork for making my own egg rolls and it's a ton more flavorful than this was. The shrimp roll has some shrimp in it, though I couldn't really taste it. Biting into the spring roll released a bunch of oil onto the wrapper. Not very appetizing. The ONLY decent thing in the order was the hot and sour soup. It had a good balance of heat, and vinegar. I think I tasted some bamboo shoots, and there may have been some mushrooms, but really good hot & sour (like I've had in Chinatown in NY, San Francisco and Washington D.C.) has tree ear mushrooms (also known as black fungus), dried lily flowers, and other ingredients that I didn't see or taste in this soup. But it was NOT too thick which was great as some restaurants use too much cornstarch. This was a lunch combo (Gen Tso, fried rice, hot and sour soup) and the lo mein and shrimp roll was separate. All in all, the total was just over $24 and definitely not worth it. I can't see going back to this restaurant again.

The interesting thing about placing the order is that you also pay when the order is placed, then they bring the food out when it's made. They were helpful in explaining to me how to modify a dish and they also gave great recommendations, as well as kept up with my liking of the food and experience while I was there. I ordered their red oil wontons and their cumin lamb noodles, but I subbed the lamb for beef. This came out before the wontons and it looked and smelled great! The beef was very tender, so were the amazing noodles! The spices were so tasty and offered a decent kick, but not too hot. I love stir-fried onions in dishes like this and these were so good that I tried to enjoy one piece with each bite of noodle and beef. The red oil wontons were incredible! The flavor of the oil was perfect! Exactly what it should be and it offered a very nice kick of heat too! This was one of the best wontons I've had in a long time! I'd definitely like to go back and try their soup dumplings. Overall this was a great experience into non-American Chinese food, one that everyone who enjoys American Chinese food should try!

I got these for the road: Dry-Fried Eggplant Crispy with a touch of savory spice plus cilantro, really good. Grandma Noodles Wavy noodles in a savory brown sauce with dried pepper and cilantro. Spicy but good spicy. Much better than the last time I had them, they hadn't congealed yet. When I mixed everything together it was great. Pork in Spicy Garlic Sauce Oh yeah.
