I can't say what authentic Chinese food should taste like but of the Chinese cuisine that I enjoy, it checked all the check boxes for me. Smelled delicious, looked delicious, tasted delicious. I had chicken fried rice and the General Tso's chicken which are the standard dishes I have when searching for Chinese food and they were 10 out of 10. I can't wait to explore more of the menu. We ordered egg rolls, wonton soup, Braised Beef Brisket in Casserole and Hot Spicy Pork ribs. We have never had the braised beef brisket in casserole before, but have had the hot spicy pork ribs before. We also ordered for delivery which we rarely have ever do. In the order instructions, I asked for the Chinese mustard and duck sauce for the eggrolls, and that was not included in the order. The wonton soup was greasy. The hot spicy pork ribs were tasty and tender. I would only wonder why it has to have so much of the seasoning spices on them to bury it. We were disappointed with the brisket dish. It was plentiful but the seasonings were not our favorite. Also got the fried rice this time where we usually get the white rice. Not a fan of their fried rice. The biggest difficulty I had with the order was that the delivery service which used DoorDash took over an hour to get to us after the order was picked up for delivery. As I'm watching the delivery online in the app, which is a nice service in DoorDash, it did not look like he was coming to us first, and probably dropped two or three orders before us. And then it didn't look like he knew where he was going. Last year while in the area around lunchtime I stopped in here for lunch, but they weren't open. So, recently while nearby around dinnertime I decided to give them another try. Walking in, it was completely empty, no customers. By the time I left, several tables were sat and they had a steady stream of carry-out/delivery pickups. The service was very spotty, as they only had two people working the dining room and so many people went without someone checking them in, I waited about 15 mins for my check and those delivery drivers formed a line waiting for their pickups. I tried their spicy cucumber salad and their three pepper beef, but I sub'd out the beef for chicken instead. The cucumbers were decent, they had a nice spice to them and the vegetable itself was fresh. The three pepper chicken came out on a sizzling platter (a fajita platter with aluminum foil on it) and looked pretty good. My first few bites had the great flavor of wok hei, which I love! But I quickly noticed there was no other flavor other than some sort of pickled pepper flavor, which is very odd in Chinese food. The chicken texture was great, but the entire dish was swimming in vegetal oil, it wasn't dry spiced and wok'd. Overall, this visit was only slightly better than the first, only because they were open this time. But I most definitely wouldn't return. I absolutely love and seek out authentic Chinese foods (Szechuan, Hunan, etc) when I travel and those this place offers many authentic style dishes, they seem a little too "Americanized." read more

Walked in on an early Friday evening. It was not busy at that time and we got seated right away. Service was alright -- not quick but not too slow either. I liked the eggplant fries and three peppers with beef. Both were delicious. Three peppers with beef was flavorful with the right amount of kick (we requested it to be less spicy). 8/2/25: I posted a review recently about enjoying some Cheng Du lunch leftovers that my husband brought home. Well... I finally made it over to the restaurant for myself. We ordered a spicy beef dish with green peppercorns and the Singapore noodles (pictured). Great combination to split! Sadly the restaurant did not match up to all the hype. The ambiance was nice enough. It wasn't too loud and it was visual pleasing. The wait staff was pleasant as well. The food was below average though. The vegetable dumplings were tasteless and somewhat unappealing looking. My girlfriend had a dish with shrimp prepared two different ways and separated on the plate. It turns out that one side was so bland and tasteless she didn't even finish it. I tried it and it was flavorless. The other side of the plate had the shrimp with more flavor but it was so spicy neither of us could eat it. The waiter said it wasn't spicy but that truly wasn't the case. My shrimp and scallops dish was tasty but pretty much average in comparison to other restaurants. A little heavy on the sauce and while the shrimp was plentiful there were only four pieces of scallops. Also, we waited 20 minutes between the time they took the dumplings away before we got our main dishes. Considering the people on both sides got their food in less than 10 minutes we were perplexed not to mention somewhat upset. When the waiter finally served us he apologized for the long wait. Did they misplace our order....who knows. I tried to send an email to management but was unable to find a email address. What a disappointment overall. One of the first places I tried after moving to Richmond and I can confidently say this will be a regular spot. Sichuan food is one of my all time favorite cuisines so I'm always on the prowl for some in any city I'm in. This hit every craving I had. It was the perfect amount of spicy. The crispy chengdu chicken and crispy honey pork was perfectly fried - highly recommend both of these. The mapo tofu and beef chow fun were delicious as well. The pork bao was decent - I typically am not a fan of shredded pork but it was still really good! The only dish that fell flat for me was the xia long bao - which technically isn't even Sichuan so shouldn't have expected to be as good as what you'd get at a dim sum place. Once my parents and I were on the hunt for a place to eat in the greater Richmond area and once we found Cheng Du, that's where we stop every time we go to Williamsburg from Northern Virginia. This place totally blew our expectations out of the water. The basil chicken was super tender and had a very fragrant basil aroma, and the cauliflower mala dry pot was perfectly savory and spicy without being overwhelming to one or another. It's not outrageously oil either, and the restaurant is pretty quiet. There are dishes targeted to audiences looking for authentic Chinese dishes, as well as a more Americanized menu. It does look a little run down on the outside and maybe even a wee bit sus, for lack of a better term, but definitely stop by if you are on the hunt for good food in the area! read more

A great option for Sichuan food! The service is a bit inconsistent sometimes but the food is so comforting it makes it worth it. The best way to eat here is family style where your whole party shares the dishes. My go-to's are the ma po tofu, orange glazed walnut shrimp, sweet and sour pork, and dry fried green beans. I was shopping for some vegetables next door at Asia Market with my friend from Ashland. We suddenly feel hungry. We saw 飄香成都 Cheng Du Chinese Restaurant sitting far end of this quaint strip mall. I decided to do quick research. It seems to be legit, especially it has been reviewed by the world traveling musician Fox E of NYC. According to the waiter, this restaurant has been at this location for 7 years. They have trouble attracting customers because the location is situated far in of the parking lot. Without further ado, we ordered the AYCE hot pot $26.99 per person. They brought fresh meats and veggies and a pot of Sichuan spicy broth and the savory chicken bone broth. Food was plenty just can't takeout. I loved the atmosphere and company. The waiter Pete was very attentive. He kept coming to replace the fuel canister for the propane stove. Because they tried to empty out all of their half-used cans. It was funny how the female employee told Pete to open the doors in Chinese to open all windows as more people just ordered spicy hot pots. We drive an hour to get to this place. The dining room is clean, and service is friendly and helpful. There's nothing 'modern' about this restaurant, but you feel immediately at home. It's old school Szechuan cuisine, with some typical American Chinese dishes. Stick with the Szechuan. Prices are on the high side, but the portions are generous. For four people, we got soup, three appetizers, and two mains, and had leftovers. We should have skipped the steamed dumplings, which were fine but not very interesting. We got hot and sour soup and wonton soup. The hot and sour was very sour, but needed hot chili oil. It was pretty thin. The wontons in the wonton soup had a beautifully thin wrapper and a nice broth, but I think we'd skip the soup next time. The don't miss appetizer is the wontons in chili oil. Not painfully spicy, with a well flavored filling, swimming in a tasty chili broth, these merit a double order. The scallion pancake was good too, but get the dumplings. Main dishes- we got Mongolian beef and shredded pork. Both main dishes filled a dinner sized plate. The beef was tender and had more beef than onions; it was delicious. The pork was garlicky and just barely sweet and spicy. It also benefited from more chili oil. You can ask for dishes spiced how you like, but with different heat tolerances, the chili oil meant everyone was happy. Overall, 3.5/5 but bumping it to a 4/5 since this is probably as good as it gets in the Richmond area. I came here for dinner on Fourth of July with four other friends and we were full after three entrees (two proteins and one vegetable) and four bowls of white rice. There are good authentic Sichuan options along with American Chinese dishes so you can definitely have your pick. EGG DROP SOUP - 2.50 Pretty expensive for a small cup of egg drop soup but at least it came with wonton crisps! Overall, wouldn't recommend because the egg drop soup was very bland and tasteless. The wonton crisps didn't add much flavor to it either. The consistency of the soup was fine, but that's about it. CHENGDU HOT SPICY FISH (BO LA YU) - 18.95 This comes in a big bowl (similar to the bowls you typically use for pho) with fish fillets, bean sprouts and LOTS of chili peppers in spicy soupy/broth. I'm not sure what level of spice we got but this one isn't a joke. The spicy flavors were super strong and tasty which elevated the dish a lot but definitely left a couple of us with runny noses and a few tears. There was a good amount of fish in here which were cooked well and soaked the broth and spices well. Definitely needed to eat rice with this one. The beansprouts were also super spicy as well. The broth itself was a bit oily but hey, that's the flavor. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a tasty seafood entree with a strong spicy kick. Next time, I'd probably ask for it less spicy, though. SICHUAN STIR FRIED CHICKEN (SI CHUAN XIAO CHAO JI)- 14.95 One of my friends got this mixed up with the dry pot chicken so we got this instead, which is not what we had expected. Nothing special about this entree - the chicken was OK and there was a good amount of vegetables and peppers. There's a slight spicy kick that didn't leave me in tears. I probably wouldn't get this again. DRY FRIED GREEN BEANS (GAN BIAN SI JI DOU) - 12.95 This is a classic dish that I'd recommend at any Sichuan restaurant. It's not the healthiest but at least it's vegetables. It was seasoned and salted well. The green beans were crunchy for the most part but a few were a bit too old and hard to chew. They also give you a good amount here. The food here is decent, but pretty oily - can't expect less from a Sichuan restaurant. Our server took our orders quickly (and food came out fast) and refilled our waters multiple times (since we had to drink a lot to help with the spice, lol) so we had a pleasant experience with service. read more

Wow! Amazing and authentic Chinese food right here in RVA. I got the mapo tofu (vegetarian - no beef - $3 less). You get the option of steamed white, fried, or brown rice with it. It was SO flavorful with just the right amount of spice/heat. There are veggies and green onions mixed in, and a lot of tofu. The chicken lo mein was also delicious with perfect-sized pieces of chicken and the proportionate amount of veggies. It was on the pricier side, but I will be returning to try new dishes! read more

We placed an order via their website and we arrived about 25 minutes later and the food was ready to go. The lady at the cash register handed me a paper menu as well. She was very friendly. We got home and opened up our order and no sauces of any kind were in the bag. I forget you gotta ask for that. Anyway, the kung pao chicken turned out to be on the sweet side. Like no spice at all even though we specified extra spicy. Then we noticed the paper menu said it was General Tso-Kung Pao chicken. The online menu just says Kung Pao chicken. I assure you that we would not have ordered it had we known that made it with General Tso flavors! So yuck! The lo mein, however, was decent. Not spectacular and certainly not worth $15. Overall, we felt we'd have fared better Panda Express. We may have just ordered the wrong dishes. In all, we were disappointed we didn't find our Chinese takeout spot in RVA. We often eat at Chinese restaurants and this is by far the best we've located so far in the Richmond area. We thought it to be authentic Szechuan cuisine very well prepared. Recently we had lunch here and had the Fish in Spicy Numbing Broth and the Sichuan Mapo Tofu. I had the former and the "heat" was dumbed down a bit for me and it was delicious. Chong Du has become our favorite Chinese food restaurant. They offer authentic Sichuan cuisine as well as the usual Americanized Chinese fare. The food is always fresh and presented well. The service is on par and most of the staff is multilingual which caters to a wide range of customers. The ambiance is not fancy but is bright and clean. There's a parking lot shared with a few other businesses but there's always plenty of spots available. Trust me, this is as authentic as Chinese food can get in Richmond. They have all of the authentic Chinese dishes, as well as your typical Chinese take out orders. The spicy fried fish and chong qing spicy chicken were our faves. They take their Schezuan spices seriously here - we could feel our mouths going numb! The mapo tofu came out sort of lukewarm, which made me feel kind of weird about it. Our rice also didn't come out piping hot either. 3 dishes among 3 people was more than enough. General rule is party minus one for the amount of dishes you should get if you're sharing family style at a Chinese restaurant. This is truly one of the most authentic restaurants I've been to in a very long time. If you like heat, this is the place for you, if you like a variety of delicious, exotic options ( yes chitterlings are on the menu!) this is the place for you! This was our last stop from our RVA trip! Mainly came for dim sum, but it was too late in the day and they ran out BUT I really do want to shoutout their SUPER friendly staff. They felt bad that they didn't have a lot of dim sum options left since we came so late, so they tried to help us find similar options on their menu. Honestly, I think they saw how tired we were LOL, but they were super understanding and accomodating. We ordered a lot of their appetizers since we didn't want to be too full and bloated on our trip back home (want to avoid that food coma LOL). Even with just appetizers, with how much we ordered, it was a good amount Pork Dumplings in Chili Oil: these dumplings were steamed! On the first bite, they were quite soft ~ super yummy! I actually really liked these, and the pairing with the chili oil was perfect. They serve this appetizer already doused with chili oil. The extra chili oil can be use as extra dipping sauce for other foods too! Dan Dan Noodle: I enjoyed these noodles a lot! I had no idea what dan dan noodles were, but my bf said he saw a foodie youtube video of someone eating them, and so he got them they kind of taste similar to lo mein (?) but not as oily, and the noodles are much slimmer. There was a hint of spiciness in the taste, so I assume there was justba dash of chili oil in there Piao Xiang Crispy Pork: loved the crunch on these! The portion was a lot of this, even just for an appetizer They kind of reminded me of a meatier chicharon, but with more oil and fat. I found these a little bit too salty, however was able to neutralize it by eating with the dan dan noodles or dipping in the extra chili oil. Pan Fried Pork Dumplings: my friend told me these tasted way better than the fried pork dumplings from Got Dumplings at UVA! They weren't so crispy that it hurt to munch on it. It had a slight crunch and was soft in the inside, almost like a midway between steamed and fried! The ones I wasn't able to try was the Scallion Pancake and Wonton with Hot Chili Oil, but my friends said they really liked them too! The restaurant itself, all the staff are wearing masks and gloves, and around the time we went there wasn't a lot of people there. The spicy / sour glass noodle sliced beef soup ( the one in the middle in my picture) was the new dish they just created. You must try if you like spicy food because it was so delicious! I was craving some spicy Chinese food and thought about how my mom recommended this place! --ChengDu Grilled Fish 成都烤鱼 - the highlight of my meal! Its hard to find decent places that cook whole fish and this restaurant does it nicely! If you're nervous about eating whole fish and the bones, don't be because all the flavors are packed inside. The sauce was also very authentic - chili peppers and peppercorns in every bite. Veggies such as cabbage, woodear mushrooms, bean curd slices, and bean sprouts soak up all that goodness and went well with the fish. This definitely hit the right spot! --Chicken in Chilly Oil 口水鸡 - staple sichuan appetizer! We did have their hot & sour and egg drop soups to start. I didn't think they tasted good and their wontons that came with it were stale. That night, there was one lady working the dining room. I kinda expected this from what I read from the other reviews. She sat us right away and let us know she would be right with us and continued to let us know. I used to live in the area and I went back recently. The spicy fried fish was delicious as always, the tomato and egg was the best dish I've had here. It's usually a home style dish so I never order it when I'm out, but my friend was craving it so we got it. It was the best tomato egg I've ever had, and that's coming from someone who isn't the biggest fan of tomato.
