I wish I had come here sooner. As much as we come to Sergio's and I used to frequent Taylors, I'm kicking myself for skipping Bluefish Grill. When my mom was around, she told me she came here with a friend. Hubby and I came here on a lunch date, Inside is a small space of tables, there was a waitress and a guy behind that was making sushi. When the sushi takes time to make, you know it's going to be delicious. I've been to other sushi spots and the rolls would come out rather quickly. We decided to start off with the Japanese fried squid on a stick. They were baby squid I had to ask thinking it was a full size squid. For the roles my husband chose the Playboy and I chose the Coco Mango which we both split. I thoroughly enjoyed the fried squid on a stick It was nice and crisp on the outside and soft and juicy on the inside. It comes with three in the appetizer so if there's two of you just split the 3rd. When our roles came out they Showed great presentation. I was nervous with the fish on top of the Playboy role because I'm not used to eating that type of sushi and I think it has to do with texture. I don't know what I was so afraid of because it was the most tender piece of fish and melted in my mouth. Out of the two roles the Playboy was my favorite one the fish on top was soft, All of the flavors were Prominent and you didn't feel like it was getting lost. I'm sure we could have ordered a third roll but it was getting close to their closing time at 2:00. I ordered a hot green tea and it came out with its own teapot which I absolutely loved. I'm just upset with myself that it took me forever to get here. I've been meaning to try a new food spot and recently came across this restaurant. It was highly recommended by a close friend and honestly I was not disappointed at all. Very cozy ambiance and the service was very good. I had the mabo ramen but ended up substituting the pork belly for beef and it was AMAZING! I really want to try the other ramen bowls and their sushi because there was such a lovely variety to choose from. My husband and I were seated at a small table in between other tables near their refrigerator and anyone walking by was near-bumping-elbows distance from us. Food is a hit or miss depending on what you order. My husband ordered a plate of sushi and I ordered their Chicken Karaage. His sushi were big and tasted delicious. My food was okay, run of the mill and nothing special. Lastly, we ordered a chocolate/strawberry cake dessert. This was very tasty. Came out here to catch up with a friend and suggested this spot. Saw the soft shell crab and knew that was already a must. We did an early lunch so we were the first people there when they opened up. We got front seatings on their outside patio because it was just so gorgeous. Service was pretty quick and then staff was friendly. I wanted to get an order of sushi to go but they said that they didn't serve them to go so...I had to be a champion and eat my craving right then and there. Lol. The family and I shared two sides: one was an interesting take on spring rolls--they appeared to be fried and panko-crusted (correct me if I'm wrong), and full of flavor. I only wish they were either larger or more came on a platter (there were 4 of us, so we had to share the six). Wife and I also had the squid appetizer and it was juicy and delicious. Not rubbery at all. Try some of the rolls as well--you can tell a lot of time and effort went into the sushi craft here. We shared one roll that was topped with a bit of lemon--something I normally wouldn't have even considered on Suchi, but the flavor profile was out of this world. Food is always on point. I will point out that the lady working there can be rather hit-or-miss with what version of her you're going to get. Sometimes she's very matter-of-fact, direct, and helpful. Other times, it is an icy vibe and relatively unpleasant. Last time I went. I was practically getting stared at by her as I was eating. Came here for a quick work lunch with a friend. We sat outside on their pleasant patio. I loved their outdoor seating because it protected us from the sun and provided a nice breeze. I normally don't venture to this part of town. I was grateful that Yelp led me here. Our waitress was kind. She made sure to check on us frequently. I ordered the Rainbow Roll. I wasn't the biggest fan of the crab in the roll because it felt like a dairy product crab salad (I'm not a fan of mixing fish and dairy). The roll was HUGE. I wasn't a fan of the fish either. It tasted a bit strange, but not in a dangerous/food safety concerning way. My friend got the Coco Mango Roll and Executive Roll. We agreed the Coco Mango was the best of the three. The Executive Roll had way too much going on for me, but a pleasant spicy kick. My friend enjoyed both of her rolls. I found that the quality of the fish didn't match the price we paid. However, inflation is a real thing influencing businesses everywhere, so I understand that their prices may have been high for this reason. The portions are huge! These may be some of the biggest rolls I've encountered in a while. When I say big, I mean hard to put in your entire mouth. My friend and I had leftovers from our rolls. I was underwhelmed with my experience here unfortunately. I was on the lookout for some good sushi. Specifically sushi rolls. It was a little pricier than I expected, but more than that. The quality did not meet the bar of the price. I had ordered a spicy tuna roll and the Red Dragon roll. The spicy tuna was simply tuna with a small dot of siracha on each. The tuna was not great quality and the lack of care to actually make spicy tuna was a bummer. Similarly w the Red Dragon (basically a California roll w spicy tuna on top).... But with the Red Dragon, the "crab center" tasted tired and seemed to be pushing its freshness limit at best. The ambience was OK. The inside was simple and almost café like. I sat outdoors because it was a beautiful day. The outdoor seating was fine - and clean, which I deeply appreciated. The service itself was fine. Decided to go to dinner with my husband and teenage son at 6:00 on Friday. The restaurant is very small so I was worried about a wait but we got seated immediately. The waitress was very friendly and went out of her way to help clarify the different Ramen styles for me. We ordered the Sunshine Sushi to share as an appetizer which was so amazing! Probably the best sushi I've ever had. My husband had the Fish and chips which he described as a little too much breading but very good. My son ordered the Crab Cakes which he loved. This place is a hidden gem! I crave the shrimp sandwhich on a weekly basis. I just wish I could Get it all the time! The place is small, but what they lack in size they make up with taste! When I was on maternity leave I was here for lunch daily. I would suggest doing a pick up order for dinner in the winter so that you don't have to wait outside for a table and you can enjoy the delicious food. I'm typically quick to recommend "hole in the wall" family owned type places, but this was a bad experience all around. Waitress was rude and food took forever (an hour) despite only a few tables being occupied. Sushi came out on shared plates, which is awkward when two people are sharing that aren't sitting near each other. When asked where the rest of one of our orders was, waitress responded "chef only has 2 hands". It was as if they were annoyed we wanted to give them our business. Hard pass on ever returning, there are too many other good food spots in the area and throughout Richmond. It's worth noting that after I posted this review, an angry person reached out that was very upset about the things I said. This person only has 1 review on their profile (for Bluefish) so I can assume they are affiliated with this restaurant. This gives me further motivation to never eat here again. After doing a Sushi search in this area I found this placed. Based on Yelp reviews and Yelp images I decided to give it a try.... I'm glad I did. I was very happy with the results. We tried and shared several dishes ranging from 4 different Ramens, Nigiri pieces, Sake, and Beers. 1) Their Ramen, all the types we ordered, were all good. 2) The Nigiri pieces we tried were overall good. They were good size and fresh. One non positive thing: one of my Salmon Nigiri pieces had a bid of tendon or skin on it. Chef probably did not noticed it... my mouth did. At first it felt like a bone but turned out to just skin or tendon. I say tendon because of lack of a better word for it. In any case, it was not welcome; however, that minor incident did not damage our experiences that day. The Nigiri pieces were good and presented well. I even like the bit of wasabi under the fish they added to each piece. 3) The Sake was good. Tasted a bit like peaches. The beers were bottled or canned (Sapporo). Priced okay. 4) The waiter was friendly and attentive. 5) Some of our Nigiri pieces came out after we were eating our main course. That's was not good. We prefer our appetizers to arrive before our main course meal. 6) Some of the spoons we got were dirty or had visual food particles on them where they were not inspected after they were cleaned. They should do a better job at that. Overall, it was great and we recommend you try it. We will be returning soon. UPDATE ON REVIEW ABOVE: Have keep in coming here over the past year or more. This place is still great and food is delicious. After having here so many times my only update to the above has to do with the following... Place is small and has a very wide variety of choices on the menu (This is why we keep coming here whenever we can); however, this makes service slow if you have a large party (at least 5 or more) and all in your party order different types of foods. Have patience, the food is delicious. If you don't like waiting very long and have a large party I recommend you all order similar dishes so that they come out together. Overall I would come back to this place in the future again and again; however, I would try to avoid coming with a big party because it takes forever for everyone to get their food. Most time each person will get their food before the others at your party and at times you may not get your food until most of the people at the table are done eating. Again, this will not stop me from returning to this awesome place it is just something I wanted to note to all so that you are aware. If coming with a big party be prepare to wait a while for your food specially if the place is already full of people. In any case, please come and try them out for yourself. read more

I am from the PNW so I have high expectations for Fish & Chips. I finally tried it here & LOVED IT! It was different but in an awesome way. I'm sorry to say that my husband and I were extremely disappointed with our experience here. Based on the many positive reviews, I had high expectations, but now that I'm looking back on previous reviews after having dined here, I can see many other people have had less than standard experiences here as well. Firstly - I want to mention this has nothing to do with the service or how the place looks. Our server was friendly and kind and we didn't mind the kind of tight and casual interior. The issue lies entirely in the food itself and how long it takes to prepare. As previous reviewers have mentioned, it's not uncommon for them to take 40+min to prepare sushi. Note that when my husband and I visited, it was a Saturday night around 7pm. Despite the time, there weren't that many other people there (maybe a third full) - so I'm not quite understanding why it takes them 40+ min to make sushi even with one sushi chef. The waitress did warn us in advance that sushi would take 40+min, but at that point we had just gone biking and were hungry, having driven 30min out of our way to come here (I'd had my eye on this place for a while before our visit), we decided to start by ordering ramen which the waitress assured us would not take long to come out. The wait for the ramen ended up being about 30 min with the sushi coming in at 40+min so in the end it wasn't even much faster. Their kitchen seems so understaffed for a Saturday night. The kimchi ramen was ok - nice and spicy kimchi flavor. The katsu that came with the curry was yummy and crispy, and the curry broth had a relatively light and pleasant curry flavor. However, the noodles were nothing special and the presentation could use improvement. The ramen bowls are an abnormally small size which causes the noodles to be extra clumped together. The flavors of the broth, however, were pretty good. Overall the ramen was pretty average - 3.5/5. It's not bad but I've had so many better bowls. The real issue is with the sushi. On 7pm on a Saturday night, they were out of their most popular dishes, like the poke bowls and the potato shrimp appetizer. We decided to order some rolls to eat after the ramen. After the long wait, our dth roll and shrimp nips arrived. We didn't finish either of them - not for lack of stomach space but because they were just that bad. The tuna on top of the shrimp nips roll was actually decent, but the roll itself tasted the way house paint smells. No idea what was wrong with it but we ended up only eating the tuna on top. In general, the sushi rice was goopy and bland, so we ended up picking out all the fish inside instead of eating the whole roll (which is something we literally never do normally). My husband and I are pretty picky about rice, and my husband especially is sensitive to textures. Overall this is the most overhyped sushi restaurant with good reviews I've ever been to (and if you look at my profile you'll know sushi is kinda my jam). Highly disappointed but am hoping these guys can work out the kinks in their restaurant and do better in the future. read more
