I was in the area with a group of friends and we all decided to stop by Uji Time to get a frozen treat since it was hot outside. The shop is small and they are located inside the Metreon on the ground level. You can enter from the doors on 4th Street or from Yerba Buena Gardens and walk to it. I went on a weekday and there was only 1 staff handling the register and making the desserts. The wait wasn't long since we were chatting as we waited for our items and most of us got soft serve. I will admit that I'm generally not the world's biggest Metreon fan -- it always feels barely half-open and slightly deserted, and it always carries a pretty strong scent of buttered popcorn from the AMC -- but Uji Time Dessert does make ducking inside worthwhile. They're most known for their soft serve with a taiyaki cone (which you can also get on top, with the ice cream in a cup, if you're more of a ice cream cup kinda person but still want the taiyaki). They always have their black sesame and/or matcha soft serve, but you can always switch it up with the ube and/or seasonal flavor. The classic black sesame and matcha is a great combination, with a lovely earthiness from the matcha and nuttiness from the black sesame. It does trend a little sweeter as far as matcha soft serve spots go, but it's still a delightful sweet treat. The seasonal flavor, of course, rotates, but I did love their Aug. 2025 flavor -- the honey osmanthus was super floral and a bit sweet, but not overly so. Checked this place out at 8:30 pm on a weeknight, when there are very few places to get after-dinner ice cream near downtown. They're open until 9 pm, and located inside the Metreon which stays half-open until late because of the AMC multi-plex upstairs. I say "half open" because by 8:30 pm all the seating in the food court had been closed off, and the only public place to sit we could find in the whole building were two small benches across from the AMC concessions stand. A nice view, though. So if you're looking for a spot where you can sit and gab with a group of friends, you'll need to go before the food court closes. My friend and I both had variants of the seasonal flavor, which was lychee. He had the lychee soft serve, which he said was excellent. He also had the matcha soft serve, which he said was acceptable but not worth commenting on. I had the lychee frozen mochi, which was sadly terrible. The mochi was either stale or ruined by having been thawed and re-frozen -- lots of ice crystals and a gritty texture to the mochi itself. And the lychee ice cream inside the mochi wrap was also stale or messed up by not being stored correctly. I was very sad, and had to toss most of it in the trash. The solo guy behind the counter seemed tired -- we could barely hear him talk, and he answered questions with monosyllables and twice didn't actually understand my friend's question. The flavor was as almost eating a slice of a cold white peach fruit with an ice cream kick to it. The watermelon ice cream was on a Taiyaki cone and it smooth and not so sweet. It's a more light watermelon taste (with a lite bubble gum taste). Uji Time is the first place in San Francisco and the Bay Area to offer the Taiyaki soft cream. There's usually two workers so if there are those moments where there's 3-6 groups waiting for an order, there can be an extra 10-15 minute wait depending on what was ordered.
