My wife has been a fan of Mitchell's Ice Cream for awhile. I've just recently discovered them. A small and popular ice cream shop. They do have a small parking lot with maybe 15 spaces? NOTE: Make sure to take a number, as that is how they serve their customers. The service is friendly and they do their best to serve everybody quickly and politely. They have seasonal flavors so make note of that. Otherwise their ice cream is creamy, flavorful, and decent scoop sizes. I got a scoop of the seasonal flavor Cantaloupe (Summer) and my wife got a scoop of the New York Cherry. Support your local business.
If you're an SF native like I am, there's a good chance you've been here plenty of times but also that your parents and their parents also came here at some point. Mitchell's has been around since the 50s and won't be leaving anytime soon (hopefully). My personal favorite is mango but runner up is either Oreo cookie or grasshopper pie. Be prepared to have trouble finding parking and waiting in line for a while, but well worth the wait for this creamy treat!
This was really some of the best ice cream I've ever had! Although you have to wait (be expected to wait and don't complain about it!) once you're in it goes really fast. It's always super packed ! It's worth the wait. The vibes and ambience inside are nice. You can get all different types of ice cream and snacks. We come here very frequently. My favorite is the almond ice cream.

The store is pretty small so can get quite cramped most of the time. They have an effective system in place though. Grab a number and wait for it to be called for your turn. We got the loudest, funniest server whose voice sounds more like it belongs on a radio station instead of cracking jokes at an ice-cream parlor. He was super-friendly and very generous with our scoops. I got the ube which is one of my faves. I asked to try the halo halo and it was surprisingly very similar to a halo halo dessert. I'll have to get this one next time. There are just so many flavors at Mitchell's. I always have a hard time deciding what to get.
Awesome, vibrant ice cream shop. Great service, staff are friendly and efficient even with the huge crowds.. Soooooooo many flavors. Pick your favorite or try something new. An SF Staple that never disappoints.

came here and got the caramel ice cream, and it was absolutely amazing! The sweetness was spot on and the waffle cone was so delicious. We also tried the coconut and pistachio. The coconut was great, but unfortunately, the pistachio had a weird flavor kind of like cough syrup (expectorant) so I wouldn't recommend that one. Other than that, everything was perfect, and the staff were super friendly!
If you're into frozen milk, this certainly is a place to enjoy it! The cornucopia of flavors is staggering. I believe they've been around since 1953. I myself have been going in there since 1984. I'm not really into much dairy, a little cheese from time to time and the occasional child's scoop. But as far as ice cream, you scream, there's no place better on the planet. I'm sure! I mean, avocado ice cream? Shut up, hand me a spoon! Take home a large handpacked portion and forgo a small order. You see, a child's cup of coconut is $5.50 but a 1/2 gallon is $15. You see my point? Simply ask for a sample taste of anything you want for free and then run home and share a tub with friends, and family. My wife sent me in there for the DURIAN which to me smells and tastes like gasoline but it's a slice of Nirvana to her! Two heaping bowls, and she's still raving about it! Fuel for her soul. Parking could be very frustrating and it's always busy. There's one of those pull a number things like at a deli to keep the crowd controlled. Make sure to grab one when you walk in the door or you may set yourself back a handful of customers. But if you're getting a tub to go, there's a special line for that, like a quick service register. Maybe grab a box of cones too to save on dirty dishes back at the crib!
A classic SF ice cream shop that families, dates, and friends would not hesitate to wait their turn for. At peak hours, there can be up to 25+ parties waiting, but their service is efficient, kind, and fast. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the SF area visiting or living and haven't tried! There are plenty of ice cream options, and there certainly will be one for you. 5/5 - Cookies and Cream/Macapuno - Not too sweet! Macapuno is a rare ice cream flavor in SF, and Mitchell's nails it! Oreo Cookie is the shop's rendition of cookies and cream, and it is one of my favorite places to get this flavor in SF. Both flavors were light and not too overpowering.
Sunny Sunday afternoon, waited 30 mins to order, there were 14 #s ahead of me. Could have ordered online for pickup but I thought grabbing a number would be faster - I was wrong. Staff are super friendly and helpful once your number is called though! Have always enjoyed their ice creams but had gelato yesterday so wanted something different. Tried the halo halo dessert cup this time and whew it was a treat. It's gotta be at least 20 oz. and topped with ube ice cream. Glad I tried it - I love Taiwanese shaved ice - but this was too sweet for me, especially the jellies. I'd try it again if I could customize the toppings. The ice is pretty chunky too. My husband liked it a lot more though and could finish the whole thing himself if allowed. My favorite ice creams flavors here are hojicha grasshopper pie, Thai tea. Their coconuts, durian and lychee are also very good and true to their name - lychee is pretty sweet though. Don't think you can go wrong, plus they let you sample. Next time I think I'll try a banana split - when's the last time you've had one of those?!
What's not to like about this ice cream place; a late dinner, a drive-by for an ice cream, pick up your ticket number, wait in line, you get called, you get the ice cream, you leave or sit or stand and enjoy the scoop!! Lots of flavors to choose from. A variety of cones to savor. Pints to buy! Basic ambiance. Order and be out. No chairs inside. Parking is a problem at the back, never enough spots. So have some who can go in to order while you watch the car!
This place is totally worth it. I'm not sure how long we waited but get yourself a ticket to the left right when you walk in. They will call your number then you'll be able to order. Parking is available in the back. I got Durian and NY cherry.. weird combo but those were the best I've had!! The durian had bits of durian and it was so so good. I wish I could buy 1/2 gallon or two if I lived here :)... macaopuno & sticky monkey was also pretty good. If you like coconut, macapuno is amazing. Halo halo is heavenly but less ice could be better next time !

Incredible ice cream place with tons of options. A little out of the way from where I live but worth it. They have lots of great Asian and Latin American flavors to choose from as well as classics. It can get busy though so expect a wait. You need to get a ticket and then they'll call out your number. Most people eat outside or in the vicinity, not as much space inside read more
Review #1,093 Posted on 7.23.26 I had read on here this spot had a rep for having Filipino inspired flavors and wanted to surprise my wife and daughter with a little treat after some local burritos before we went to see Ella Mai while in town in the City on Saturday the 18th. You walk in and grab a number right away to get in line for your order. They probably had 10 people working at the counter helping people get their orders fulfilled, it's that packed here. The ice cream was very good. We all 3 got double scoops, each of us getting the ube, and then 1 other flavor. The ube is a must, super awesome flavor of ice cream, I also tried the coffee toffee crunch, which was excellent. I'd for sure will return here for ice cream in the future, highly recommend. read more

A San Francisco staple for ice cream wooo! (Near as delicious as Marco Polo's Gelato hehe) Mitchell's has a notoriously long wait time with regulars exclaiming that wait times are nearly 30-1hr, so freezing outside is worth the wait (or... just wait in your cars, huddle up with your ice cream date, etc) I wasn't expecting a bunch of unique flavors and even HALO HALO?! (Filipino shaved ice) will have to come here again on a slower day.... My only qualm is that everyone WILL try all the flavors, you'll be served in bodega style fashion with numbers called out when you get a paper number, so please don't wait outside. There's no line!!! It'll go by relatively fast when people give up on the wait, so patience is key here :) This time around I got.... Thai tea milk shake I kid you not, bang for your buck for $9 you get nearly 4 scooops of ice cream packed into something that'll bring the boys to the yard (one scoop of ice cream here is $6) delicious creamy, tea based goodness that makes me want to come here again for this, did take a while to make though. Lots of hype, and worth the try. I appreciate the many different flavors that are available, including classics as well as more creative and unique options. It's good that they allow samples. I had the espresso toffee crunch and I like the strong coffee flavor and the crunch gives it a good contrast in texture. I do wish the scoop was a little bigger, but otherwise I wouldn't mind coming again in the future when I'm in the area. read more
Came on a Friday night and it was pretty crowded but it moved quickly. The ice cream is creamy and they have a lot of flavors. Ube - you know they don't use food coloring when the color is more subtle which I appreciated. Tropical4 - love the mix of fruit flavors and it balanced each other well. read more
On a Friday night, my ticket number was 35 and they had just called number 15. When they finally called my number the machine was at 58. This place has a constant traffic for a reason. I probably waited idk 40 minutes for my ice cream. I walked around and luckily came back on time because they are very quick with moving on to the next number if you aren't nearby! This place is nostalgic to me and I'm glad to see that nothings changed! I haven't had a single bad flavor here. My family loves the durian and macapuno! I always vouch for their classic flavors cookies and cream, rocky road, etc. they actually fill the whole cone with ice cream, it's not like baskin Robbins or other shops where u can't enjoy the cone cause u finish the ice cream by the time u get to it. I got strawberries n cream this time. Simple n classic. The texture is unmatched. read more
Excellent ice cream quality. Best to go on a weekday as there are otherwise always lines. Outstanding top quality workers there behind the counter too. Without question a perfect 5 star experience. The ice cream variety is so unique and if you are brave there is something for you too = good thing they are generous with tastings - find a flavor you love? take home 1/2 gallon for a great deal. I loved the Spumoni and the blueberry cheesecake. I will try mango next and perhaps get the mango ice cream cake for an upcoming birthday. People working there were exceptional. YOung, energetic, friendly, patient - I couldn't say enough good things about them. I love this part of San Francisco near The Mission. There are so many small points of interest that always draw me in. It feels like authentic San Francisco. read more
This place is pure nostalgia for me. We grew up near Valencia Street and our parents couldn't afford much luxuries when we were kids but this was a special treat for us. The ice cream here is pure bliss and takes me back to a simpler time. I remember when it wasn't as crowded; but what I would say to patrons now don't let that discourage you. The staff here are awesome, grab a number and hang out looking at the menu. You can't go wrong with anything here! All the flavors here are full of flavor and you can taste the quality of every bite and lick. Ben was awesome and was calling out Bay Area sports trivia as they called numbers. I was really looking forward to trying Mitchell's ice cream, since I heard it's one of the best in the bay. We arrived and it was packed. A good sign right? We grabbed a ticket and waited to be called. We were called and were able to sample a few ice creams before deciding on the young coconut and the Peruvian fruit flavor. Everything was fine until we kept eating the ice cream. Then I found a CURLY HAIR, where the two ice cream scoops met. Mind you my partner and I have long straight hair. I immediately felt disgusted and my stomach turned. I personally would not return. It was one of the worst experiences I've ever had at an ice cream shop. First time here. Delicious ice cream, many options to choose from. I chose from the vegan list and that coconut and coffee flavors served as a delicious pairing with the rootbeer to make my float. I picked up a bag of Italian hazelnut biscuits that were deliciously creamy and filled with hazelnut at every bite. Service was good based on the lines. Can't wait to visit again! read more

Best ice cream in the City. No matter the weather it's going to be a line. I've been coming here forever and now bring my daughters!! This time of year they have fresh EggNogg which is amazing Daughter #1 Loves the Grasshopper Pie. She comes in tried other flavors and still gets it.. Daughter #2 Loves the Kalua Mocha Cream. It's smooth a tasty. Her second option is Ube. Me, I love the Mango and will add chocolate to it. It creates the best flavor. The staff is always friendly and the place is true old school. They also have repacked gallons as well if you want to grab as go. It's always clean and fully stocked. No inside seating but do have a few benches. Wow, we love Mitchells! My local SF friends love this place and they came alot during the summer and talked a lot about how there was ticketing system but when you go get ice cream in November... no line!! I opted for the pumpkin flavor which was seasonal, and I am so glad I did! Their ice cream was just absolutely delicious! Super creamy, and even their smallest size was still a lot of ice cream! In this age of ice cream where we Salt and Straw and Jeni's, I love those place but appreciate places like Mitchell's even more with their simple and delicious flavors. read more
I stopped by on a Sunday evening. I had to pull the token and wait for 30 minutes to get to the counter. They had so many excellent flavors. I wanted to try all. I finally took 3 2 scoop ice creams and a cone. Ice cream was creamy and flavorful. Mango, ube and Thai tea were my favorite flavors. Coconut pineapple, Halo halo and spumoni were my other flavors. Chocolate dipped waffle cone with chocolate ice cream was excellent as well. read more
Curtis was wonderful! Very attentive, engaging, kind, above and beyond customer service! Sad to hear he only works part time. He really excels in providing amazing customer service. He is very polite. Uses terms like "Yes ma'am" etc... He gave 3 great suggestions on ice cream flavors from this location. Quickly got us awesome samples to try. Food: - Some of the ice cream flavors are seasonal, but they let us sample whatever we wanted and most of the samples were pretty good - Ended up going with Macapuno (sweet coconut) and Lychee - Great flavors, thoroughly enjoyed - You can buy different size tubs of certain ice creams if you would like to take some home - 9/10 Service: - Were able to try any flavors we asked for - Very friendly - 9/10 Ambiance: - Very busy and we went pretty late, maybe around 10 p.m. (on a weekday), and it was a bit of a squeeze to stand inside - Pretty small place but warm and well lit - Like most places in SF, hard to find parking lol better to walk/bike there - 9/10 Overall Rating: 9/10 read more

Mitchells is one of those places to visit when in the city because of how long it's been there and the variety of flavors. The line does get pretty long though, especially on a warm day. There is very limited parking and a ticket system to queue up. It does get quite loud inside due to many people trying samples and getting their orders. Their ice cream ranges from traditional to tropical, as well as sorbets. They can even turn their ice cream into milkshakes or sundaes. My favorite flavors are Banana and Horchata! read more
Classic old school ice cream shop with a variety of flavors for ice cream or sorbets! **GRAB A NUMBER INSIDE THE SHOP** There was a large crowd outside the parlor, but dont let that fool you cause thats not the line! The flow is that you grab a number and they call out numbers in order (like a fish/meat market). I was #39 and they were on #7 when I grabbed the ticket, but it moves fast so dont go toooo far. They also move on from the numbers fast, so make sure to be nearby! There were several numbers that were skipped since those people didnt show up til later, but the workers were still open to serving them. They let you sample multiple flavors, and the espresso toffee crunch was my favorite. I ended up taking a pint with me home! Great spot, amazing flavors and friendly service read more

$13.50. Two single scoop, sugar cones. One Caramel Praline and one Espresso Toffee Crunch. The Caramel Praline is a bourbon vanilla base with caramel swirls and pralines. It was the sweeter of the two flavors ordered. The Espresso Toffee Crunch, on the other hand, has a deeper, slightly bitter edge, balanced by bits of toffee candy and espresso chips. It's still rich, still creamy, but less sweet than the praline. Both flavors are firmly on the creamy side of the dairy spectrum. Portion wise, the scoops were equal and fair. Not generous, not skimpy. Would I have liked a bit more for the price? Sure. But I also walked away satisfied which counts for something. After trying each other's flavors, one thing became clear is that these do not play well together. Individually, these are D-licous. Combined, these clash. It is not the kind of pairing I'd like in a sundae. I wouldn't refuse it, but I just wouldn't order it. As the HOW TO, walk-in, take a number. We went off hours on a chilly day when the line wasn't too bad and people still try to game the system. For the folks that buy straight from the case, the shop calls those folks straight to the counter. Which is fine, until they're offered a free sample. That's where the customer gets a bit confused.... After sampling, some try to order a scoop (not one I saw tried to order the sample), and that's when they are told to go back and take a number. Doubt it's the first time these folks have tried this move. I mean they knew the shop sold ice cream out of the case ... r/AITAH. IDK. Hard to say. Good dairy. Great flavors. Mitchells is still my favorite ice cream shop in NorCal! It's a staple in the bay area community and beyond. I went to a wedding in San Diego where they had big tubes of Mitchell's ice cream in Ube and Macapuno, which are 2 of my favorite flavors. Four Seasons is also at the top of my list. My cousin really liked the Avocado, and my boyfriend loves the Coconut Matcha. Don't forget to grab your ticket! Lines can get pretty long, and wait time can be an hour sometimes. Parking is also limited, so you'll likely need to find street parking. No restrooms! If you're not sure of a flavor, ask for a sample :) Enjoy! read more

Mitchell's excels at fruit flavors, so I would stick with those. My favorites from my many visits are the lucuma and the sticky monkey! I've been here a couple times with friends and family when we're in the area and enjoy the varieties of ice cream flavors, especially from the Philippines. The first time I was there, I probably sampled eight to 10 flavors. They will let you sample all of them if you wanted, at least that's what the employee told me one customer did who came in from out out of state. They are very friendly, patient, and accommodating. The space is small. You take a ticket number and the line line moves fairly quickly since they have a number of employees serving the ice cream, making the shakes, and everything else. What are your most popular flavors?
Mango and ube. Mitchell's makes the most amazing ice cream out of tropical fruits, but they also have conventional choices. My favorites are mango, buko (coconut) and Mexican chocolate. Seasonally I like their pumpkin and peppermint stick.

Yes: We sell pints for $7.80 and quarts for $10.95. Our ready pack half gallons are $11.49 which is a good deal.

The only flavors with egg are French Custard Vanilla and Egg Nog. The rest are all egg free.
