selection is great. Prices are normal and what I always like about Ulta is it is a good place to roam and try things ...and plenty of "space" to find your color. Until most recently. I was recently there on Aug 15 early evening looking for a Tarte product. The display was two rows, and I didn't know where to begin. Three employees of Ulta (2 men and a woman) were standing about 2-3 rows away and after watching me circle the Tarte area twice I found myself asking a fellow shopper for help. When she wasn't sure I sought the help of the 3 staffers still talking to each other (but looking at me). The young man who helped me told me "I don't really know which is your color" and that was basically all he said. I told him I wanted to try this item- and it was a $20+ item and he just showed no interest in helping me. He literally didn't ask what I normally use in terms of coverage, was this for work or evening, how I heard about the product. Nothing. He did check his own visage though twice in the under a minute he was working with me. Two mirror checks for his look- no questions for me. With more than 12 colors at least to choose from I just needed suggestions. I got none of that. I found him to be disinterested, someone who cared more about how he looked than how my customer experience was going, and overall not welcoming. Local Ulta needs to hire and train people to be service oriented- and that means helping customers who are over the age of 30. I suspect he wasn't helpful because he didn't know how to relate to a 45+ shopper. Also known as the ones with disposable income who take amazing care of our skin. read more

I literally just left the store and walked around looking for a specific product. Employees standing about at least three walked by me without as much as a hello. I love Ulta for their wide selection of products and their coupons (though I can hardly even use them) but it seems as if their staff, at least in the cosmetics area, is not very educated. I always end up at Sephora when looking for suggestions as their staff seem to know their products far better. I went in looking for a nude lip product and asked one of the girls what she could recommend. She informed me that she specialized in Bare Minerals so she'd recommend their products. When I informed her that I was allergic and therefor couldn't use BM, she was out of ideas. I ended up at Sephora and found the perfect product. During my most recent visit, the cashier couldn't find my rewards account then told me she did and attached it to my receipt when she hadn't. My mom and I went back inside and spent nearly half an hour before two of them managed to get it worked out. When I got home, we realized they had charged us twice for one product and we hadn't gotten the triple points we were supposed to get. Instead of going back to deal with them again, I just called the customer service hotline. Overall, the store is clean and has a ton of products. The coupons don't hurt, but the staff needs some SERIOUS education/training. read more

This review is for the store itself, not the salon. I've always had an easy time shopping here. They are never out of what I need! Their selection is growing too! This location now carries Clinique and some higher end mascaras like Lancôme and Dior. I try to stock up on Redken and Purology products where there's a buy two get one free special. Never had an issue with a return or exchange. Employees are always pleasant! Side note - ULTA now offers a store credit card and a MasterCard that you can use everywhere can get ULTA points for purchases! I will totally end up with that card. Plus 20% off anything a day of your choosing when you're approved, sweet!! I'll try to stack that with the BOGO deals. read more

I went to have my hair cut and colored by Toby. He ruined the cut and color. I walked out with orange hair, the cut was uneven. I texted him about how unhappy I was. He had been my regular stylist for almost 2 years. It took him over 24 hours to respond. Never gave me an apology and for that matter, said he knew he didn't get the lift he had wanted. I was beyond mad, that he knew that he had messed my hair up and let me leave without saying a word to me. I called Ulta and spoke with the manager, who's name was Emily. She made an appointment for me the next Tuesday with another stylist to fix it, because I didn't want Toby to do it after being so rude to me. After my talk with Emily, Toby messages me to tell me he was pulled aside, because I had called and complained. He said he couldn't believe I called and didn't realize I was so upset. How could you not realize I was upset? When the first sentence was, I'm so upset about my hair? Anyway I walk in yesterday for my appointment to fix my hair, only to find out the stylist wasn't there and they didn't know when she would be back. My only alternative would be to have Toby fix it. I said absolutely not and got my refund. I even asked for the tip refunded back, which they replied no. Don't ever go to this place. They have horrible customer service and will screw your hair up and then make you feel as if you're done something wrong. This place sucks!!! read more

This used to be my favorite place to shop for fragrances, face lotions, and other beauty supplies until I found out some of their face lotions were filled up with cocoa butter. It's realistic to say that they were not aware of the situation, however this the second time I have bought this firming eye cream that this has happened. Taking a look at returned items would put a stop to this as I've told them both times I went in there. Management seems a little overwhelmed as well as just tired every time I go in there. It might be time to cut some people out and spruce up that team. Staff is pretty friendly, but I feel like there is a boy that stands wig a couple or girls while you shop that just glare at you. I usually have no problems with this store however, today was the worst experience I have had. I walked in the store and was not even acknowledged although, I noticed that when another girl walked in after me, hair done make up done, she was greeted very enthusiastically (I was in gym clothes). Then, I'm just walking through the aisles, not really looking for anything specific, and one of the girls working there continues to circle me and treat me as though she thinks I'm trying to steal products. Went there last weekend to get my haircut and wound up very unsatisfied. But I'm not the type of person to complain and she did spend a good amount of time on my hair so I just paid and left. This is my second bad experience at ulta so I will not be returning. I'd much rather pay a little bit more and go to a real salon. First of all, my hair did not turn out at all like I wanted, and I was very specific. I told her long layers and tapering to a v shape in the back. You have to look very hard to see the layers in my hair and it's pretty much straight. Then, she decided to charge me for styling even though I never asked for styling and all she did was run a flat iron through my hair a few times. She never once asked whether I even wanted styling and my friend, who was also getting her hair cut, was only charged for the shampoo and haircut ($35) and her stylist actually spend time blowdrying her hair whereas I paid $45 + tip. So overall, I paid over $50 for a haircut I don't like at. So be careful and be very specific about whether you want styling because given the opportunity, they will charge you. read more

I received perfume that was bought here as a gift and it was clearly used and put back in the package and resold. Had dirty fingerprints on the spray nozzle. Also showed up 5 mins late for a haircut and was turned away because they were too busy. Mind you, there was literally no one in the salon at all, and I needed a trim that usually takes no more than 20 mins with the blow-dry and wash. I'll just get my Ulta fix when I go back up to Chicago to visit family once a month. read more

I have been shopping in Ulta several times. Most of the time it is under staffed. I've only ran into one rude employee who was actually a manager. Other than that bad experience, it is a great store. The gentleman showed me where to find my product and then helped me find other items that I was wondering if they had. I'm actually signing up with Yelp JUST so I can write a review for the Salon because I'm so pissed about my awful haircut. I can't say anything about the other hairdressers, but Kayla did an absolutely terrible job, and to top it off, since I was getting my hair trimmed back in to a pixie, it can't be fixed until it grows out more because she cut it WAY too short in all the wrong places and not short enough everywhere else. I brought a picture in that showed exactly what I wanted and while she was cutting I kept telling her what cut I wanted but she just didn't listen. Even if she would have given me the cut I asked for, or gave me any cut for that matter that was in the least bit flattering, she still cut it totally uneven. This review is about the Salon at Ulta. I wish someone had written more reviews about this place which I could've read and avoided this place all together. I went there after booking my appointment online with 'Abbie'. As soon as I entered the place I was greeted very nicely by a man whom I told I had an appt and he directed me to the back of the store to the Salon. I went upto the Salon counter said that I had an appointment with Abbie. Without any form of acknowledgement (not even a hello) let alone introduction, she told me 'go to my station' Umm do I know you personally? What do I know your station is? I gave her a blank look and had to ask her is she's Abbie since there had been no introduction, she said yes. The look on her face showed that she either hated her job or hated me. I guess she was just having a bad day since she continued to complain during my haircut to another employee, Shanniqa, about how she 'just feels under appreciated'. She asked me the sort of haircut I wanted and barely paid attn to what I said. During the hairwash she almost scolded me when I tilted my head. Came back to the station, when I was seated she turned my face away from the mirror. I don't know how hair dressers work but that has never happened to me before. While I was still thinking about if she was doing this to adjust the seat... *SNIPP* SHE MADE THE FIRST CUT WITHOUT EVEN BOTHERING TO ASK IF THE LENGTH WAS OKAYY!!! As a result I've ended up with the shortest hair since I was 5. During the middle of the cut and her complaining to Shanniqa about her life... I looked up to find that Miss. Abbie had walked over to the counter to help another customer select a hair color. Not even an 'excuse me' to me. This happened two more times. After my first wash at home I realized that my hair wasn't even cut evenly. THERE WERE TWO STRANDS ON BOTH SIDES which were the same length as before. She didn't even bother checking that she was cutting all the hair and because she styled them to hide it I realized it later. If she had done a good job with the hair, her rude personality could still have been excused. I wish I could give zero stars since even one star is like being generous. Please avoid this place and if you absolutely have to go to ulta, pick anyone apart from Abbie cause god forbid if she's having a bad day, you'll end up having bad months thanks to the horrible haircut you'll be stuck with. read more

This is more a review of service, not on the store itself. I like Ulta, as a company, however on the day I visited this location I practically had to beg someone to help me. If someone is willing to pay $40 for foundation, I don't think you should have to find someone to help you. The male associate who helped me never looked me in the eye, as he was color matching me he was surveying the store and talking with other associates, he didn't listen to what I was looking for, and in the end suggested a purchase that did not match what I needed. He came across as arrogant and made me feel like I was wasting his time. When I asked about less expensive options he said I could, "look on that side of the store," but that he only knew about the "premium lines." This a review for the facial. I had my facial done with Maddy. I recommend going elsewhere for facials. First, the chair is uncomfortable--it doesn't exactly feel like a proper spa experience. I am not from the area; I have an Esthetician I go to regularly in New York, but having been home for the holidays, my mom recommended Ulta after a great facial with a lady named Cathy a year ago. She is no longer there, however. My facial felt very rushed and was supposed to include extraction. Maddy spent probably about 2 mins tops on my extractions--not thorough at all. My esthetician back home usually spends around 20-30 minutes on average for extractions. Maddy also didn't try to make any conversation, didn't ask me any questions about my current skincare routine, didn't explain what she was doing as she did it, didn't talk to me about the brand she was using on my face, didn't have me fill out a profile before starting the facial...it wasn't thorough at all. Granted there is quite a difference in price between what I pay at home for a facial ($250) versus here ($50) but if they advertise facials as including extractions, it should be done thoroughly. In addition, every other place I have been to for a facial for the first time has always had me fill out a profile beforehand. I was disappointed in the experience and will not return for a facial at Ulta. read more

This review is based on my experience at the salon, although I enjoy the store as well. I was at Ulta purchasing travel-sized stuff for an upcoming trip and received a 20% off coupon for a salon service. Being in desperate need for a haircut and conditioning treatment, I tried them out. First of all, everyone there is very friendly and helpful and it's never crowded there. Austin cut my hair and she did an AMAZING job! I have really thick hair, it's naturally wavy and therefore naturally frizzy. She gave me really intricate and face-framing layers to help give texture and movement to my hair; it's also much more comfortable! I also had a conditioning treatment done for frizz; I probably could have done without that, but the haircut was phenomenal. They also have a huge selection of hair care items and Austin suggested some great products for taming my mane. Not only do you get a great haircut when you go there, but you get to use your salon treatments toward earning rewards points if you're a member. It's a win-win and I highly recommend going there. read more

I got my hair cut at the in-store Salon and I'll admit I was a little apprehensive; I've only let people I know cut my hair before and the thought of trusting someone I've never met with it was a little daunting. I went in with an open mind and was really happy with the end result. I got my cut from Karen the salon manager and she was fantastic. She gave me exactly what I wanted- which was just a trim since I have an event in two weeks and needed to keep as much length as possible- and it looks so much better than when I first came in. I definitely plan on returning soon and working with Karen again. She was very sweet and personable and I enjoyed the appointment. read more

Just before my graduation day I went to Ulta Salon at Normal, IL, to get a haircut for the special day. The guy who was responsible for my haircut was 'Keleb'. I had long and beautifully wavy hair previously with good bangs in the front. But this guy ruined everything. My hair was crooked behind and it was such a simple haircut! Even the bangs in front was not good at all. I couldn't notice the crooked haircut until I was home when my roommate told this. So I called Ulta immediately to fix it on that day since I had my graduation the next day. But they gave me an appointment two days after my graduation. So I had to go to 'Colorifics' to fix my hair. I am not at all happy with Ulta's customer care and specially with their hairdressers. Ulta is expensive but didn't get the value for money service. read more

I went there with my husband for a hair clip, because it located near the restaurant where we had dinner, then came my worst shopping experience in champaign. 10 mins after we walked in no one showed up, yet luckily a helpful woman( not sales) came up and led me to the hair dressing rack. When we came to the cashier, the cashier seemed so disappointed at my $6 clip that she exhaled when repeating the price with tax. Then she asked if I need a plastic bag, when I said no she suddenly whispered to the microphone with words like 'shoplift' and when we walked out( approaching the door) she slanted head and said 'now they are leaving' towards microphone, it sounded so enunciative that I felt soooooo humiliated!
