On the scale of cosmetic stores, Ulta is above your average drugstore, yet nowhere near Sephora. It's a good place to get Essie nailpolish and a variety of "only sold in salons" hair products, but shopping here is not a palatial experience. The employees often strike me as being immature and not really interested in helping customers. While we're on the subject, hey Ulta employees? Asking me multiple times if I want to sign up for your store card is NOT the way to rope me in. If the promotion was like Sephora's, maybe I'd do it, but it's not, so I won't. So there. read more

Once I walk in I can't seem to walk out. I always find all my cosmetic needs. I walk in for 1 item and walk out with 10. They have everything you can think of and their club card is great. You receive special offers and coupons for Ulta just by having their club card. They also have a vast selection of perfumes and colognes. They have a great variety of hair care products all the way from your regular drug store products to your fancy pants products. They also have a hair salon there which I have not tried but curious to try. read more

While I have no problems with Ulta, I absolutely cannot stand coming into this location. I used to go here because it was convenient (I worked next door), but I don't think I was ever once greeted and when someone would ask me if I needed help it was more like them walking past asking because it's their job. Now, only in the past year have I REALLY gotten in touch with my girly side, and with that being said, I had no clue where to start. I don't want to be sold the expensive product because it's expensive....I want it because it's WORTH it. I've asked myself if I should go somewhere like MAC or Sephora and ask for help explaining different types of products/what brush does what/how to pick out concealer.......but then I thought, Ulta is still a beauty store and even the girls at any Sally Beauty have been a lot more attentive and thorough and honest than anyone I came across at THIS particular Ulta. Now I only shop at the one on Clybourn because while some of the employees have a "I don't want to talk to you unless I have to" attitude, there's a handful that will go on and on about what products they recommend (expensive and cheap!) and they're honest about what colors will work and what won't. That's right, this Ulta gets 1 star! Let's work on customer service people. read more

I come here to get my fix of new nail polish. I do my own nails aside from the occasional pedicure, so I like to splurge and buy the good stuff... strictly OPI. I think they have every OPI color ever made plus top coat, quick dry, and everything else to meet your grooming needs. I have also found good deals on shampoo, body wash and moisturizer. Some of the brands I use can be bought at walgreens, cvs, etc., but I'm an avid price checker and ULTA usually has a better deal. Oh, and the location is right next to best buy, whole foods, peets coffee and american eagle if you feel like multi-tasking. read more

Robby gives great hair! I just got my hair cut by Robby, the store manager. I actually followed him from his former Ulta Salon, because he is simply amazing. He has brought my hair from long and mousy at the ends to long and think from root to tip. As a natural dishwater blonde, who loves masquerading as a brunette, my hair tends to turn reddish as it fades- to the point where I thought I was actually a natural redhead. Robby found a way to keep me a lush brown without the icky reddish after tone (Nothing against redheads, I just don't like the look on me). His prices are extremely reasonable and the salon frequently offers sales. Please go see Robby- your hair will thank you! read more

ASK FOR LILI!! I needed a new makeup routine for an upcoming black tie wedding. I wanted a look that would last all night, look professional (and natural!) and show up in flash pictures. Because the wedding is out of the country, I needed to be comfortable applying myself. I called ahead to see if i needed an appointment, was told to just walk in, and went up to a group of employees and asked for help. The woman who volunteered didn't seem interested in helping me at all. She was very curt and showed little interest in my concerns or looking at the pictures of dresses I brought in. She told me she had an appointment coming in and passed me off to another consultant. Thank goodness, because the girl who ended up helping me was AWESOME! Her name is Lili and she is an absolute doll. She spent as much time with me as I needed, running around and trying different products until I found ones I truly loved, and listened to exactly what I was looking for. She also understood that I didn't have $200 to spend on all new products, so took extra time to show me lower-cost alternatives to brushes, setting powders, eyeliners and shadows. She acted like she truly enjoyed putting makeup on me which made the experience fun, rather than making me feel like I was wasting her time, as other consultants have done. She also gave me about 5 free samples of really nice primers, lipsticks and makeup removers. If you go to this Ulta and need help I would highly suggest requesting Lili. She's a sweetheart and is knowledgeable. My skin color was lighter than hers but she matched me perfectly :) I left feeling beautiful and confident read more

I love Ulta's retail offerings. But this review is strictly regarding the Salon services I had here. I popped in to get an OPI Gel Color manicure which they had on special for $25 versus the regular $35. I'm a regular Gel Color manicure fan - I've been getting them non-stop since OPI came out with the product a year ago, so I know my stuff. I saw KB for my service. She is new to Chicago but not Ulta, but admittedly is normally a hair technician. She was extremely nice and very careful with my mani. However, her lack of nail training was evident. She was very uncomfortable just cutting my nails - she told me she was afraid of cutting me. Oh no. She also put the layers of my gel polish on far too thick, so three of the nails on my left hand have not set properly. I didn't notice until I got home that evening, and haven't had a chance to go back to have them put back under the LED light. My biggest concern about the nail services at Ulta is cleanliness. I realized after KB had cut my nails that she hadn't taken the tools out of a sealed clean package - ew! It was obvious to me that the tools are not being sanitized between clients, yuuuuuuck. Thankfully none of them touched my skin! The mani itself was kind of half-assed. It was more of a polish change - I had to ask for my nails to be clipped and filed, and there was no cuticle treatment whatsoever. Which, normally, would have made me kind of upset, but considering the lack of cleanliness at Ulta, I wouldn't have wanted a cuticle trimmer of theirs anywhere near my nails! YIKES! So, if you hadn't guessed by now, I won't be getting my nails done here again. It's too bad, because KB was a really nice girl, and I'm sure she's a good hairstylist, but Utla needs to clean up their nail act and hire a professional. read more

Had a cut & colour here to take advantage of their 25% off for first time customers & the fact you can get points on your Ulta card. The good: - it's cheaper than most salons The bad: - I was there 2.5 hours & wasn't even offered a glass of water. Parched!!! - go in knowing what you want, I was up for some discussion with a trained proffessional but my stylist just did everything exactly like I said. - the salon is a bit grubby. Towels smell bad. - the 25% off is for one service. On my receipt the colour was split across 3 lines, but I only got 25% off one line. So it's not really 25% off any one service, more like half a service. - despite wearing a gown & towel my stylist managed to get DYE ON MY TOP!! I didn't notice until my husband pointed it out, a huge dollop on my shoulder. Completely ruined a really nice top. I wear my scruffy old t-shirts to dye my own hair at home, never have I had to wear them to a hair salon!!!! Avoid. read more

I'm really torn about this place because I freaking love Ulta and have worn out my club card many a time taking advantage of all of the great products and sales. However, this location annoys me since they remodeled. Yes, it's nicer but all the aisles are so close together I feel a little claustrophobic while I'm shopping. The people who work here generally suck. Last night was the first time I had a cashier who actually smiled and was friendly. I was a little taken aback because I'm just not used to it. Well, let's see...it's hard to not give 1 star to this location...but, all in all, there was at least ONE girl that works here that was polite enough to NOT walk away from me as I asked my questions. So, I mean, at least there's that. I've been in this particular location three times over the course of the year. I kick myself for going in the last two times. Apparently, I must really like it when people are rude to me? Huh, learn something new about yourself all the time I guess. Won't bore you with deets of my first two visits, just that apparently trying to find a ceramic hair straightener AND a good hair dyer with a diffuser makes me some kind of weird curly haired bipolar monster. Who knew? Went in looking for mascara tester brushes. Only went in after being on forget twice. Wandered around aimlessly, looking but not seeing. Thought I should at least ask, maybe I wasn't seeing them. Or looking in the wrong spot. Approached a sales girl, said, "excuse me..I was wonder-" that's where she literally looked at me and said "hold on" and walked away, never to return again. FINALLY, someone answered my bob-in-weave-in-front-of-you-so-you-answer-my-question approach and was, honestly, quite helpful; even calling a competitor to find out if they had what I needed. Not sure I'll be visiting this store any time soon, but not really ready to give up on Ulta quite yet. The moral of this story: are you so sure that Target doesn't have what you're looking for? Spare yourself the hurt feelings and look anywhere else first. Use this store as a last resort. read more

My SO picked out some Nexxus hair products that she said were cheaper here than at the local Walgreen's and other stores. They also did not have any Mac products. UPDATE--- The district manager was suppose to reach out to me within 48 hrs. Never heard back from them. Ladies stay away from this store. People deserve to be treated with dignity and respect especially when spending their hard-earned money. Oh my ladies of color...Don't go to this store. The staff here is the worse and very selective as to whom they want to greet and help. My first and last visit to this store was 7/29. I was not the only person of color in this store but I noticed that staff ignored every WOC (there was at least five during my visit) while giving generous assistance to other women During check-out, was the worse. i was not greeted but rather asked curtly "did you get what you needed?" When I brought to attention the attitude, the cashier could care less. The GM said the company line and a gift card. I choose not to take the gift card because I felt this would keep the poor service going. I've never had this sort of service at the downtown or Hyde Park locations. In fact they are EXCELLENT with customer service!!! I was so turned off I considered returning my purchase. read more

I wrote a review a few years ago about the Lakeview Ulta, and it was also 5 stars. This one is about the Ulta on North Avenue next to Pottery Barn. I was desperate one day and could not get into see my usual stylist in Lakeview at ULTA so I was a walkin and got lucky with Amy. My hair never ever looked that good.!!!! She toned it and trimmed it so perfectly...I just called and she is no,longer there...darn it! But I will give you an update. Most of the stylists are amaze-ing!!! They are so educated and informed...not all but most. Just be sure to check and see how long they have been there and been doing hair, I have had stellar results!! read more

I have been going to Ulta for my hair for 4 years.... it has been life changing!! The professionalism of the stylists is consistent from location to location.... because of children in different cities I have been in 4 cities and feel so confident going to Ulta to get my hair done..... I love the store in Near North and my stylist, Eddie. He "gets" my hair and all it's persnickety imperfections and I am confident that every time I walk out I will be so happy with my hair!! Eddie keeps every detail of what he does on the computer so it is always consistent! And it's like spending time with a friend!! A great plus is how the scheduling works.... I NEVER have to wait.....Ulta takes care of their customers.... I also really appreciate the point system and the "deals" in store!! GO SEE EDDIE!! read more

Go see Cindy at the benefit brow bar I love her after having bad experiences of others making my brows too thin ( I have naturally thick brows ) from nail shop waxing to threading they all made my bros thin over time. I had to let them grow out 4 long months but they are amazing now. brow wax is 20.00 but worth it and she has the lightest touch ...i get them tinted too .... she does lip waxes as well . read more

Ulta is the only convenient place that sells Essie nailpolish and Seche super fast drying top coat. This location is close to the office, so I made an emergency trip. The store is well organized for the most part, but the Essie section is sooo small!! They didn't have my colors, so I bought my backup. Yes, there IS a difference between all those shades of light pink!! I get to the register, and the woman is taking FOREVER to ring my items up. She's having a conversation with the dude that works there, talking smack about someone else. Hand gestures and all!!! Her: I can't stand that girl. She's such a b*tch. Guy: Look of shock. Nodding head at me, meaning to apologize. Me: Annoyed, but smiling so I can get my things and go. Her: I'm sorry for my language. But she really is a bad person. Just awful. Me: No worries. That's fine. Her: You have no idea what kind of terrible person she is (she's about half way done ringing up five items and is starting to get aggressive). Me: It's ok. I understand. I'm a proud beauty product whore. Yes, I'll gladly shell out $8.50 for a bottle of Essie nail polish, $20 a bottle for designer shampoo and $18.50 on a Stila lip gloss. Shameful, I know. But it's my thing. I like this outpost of Ulta the best for a multitude of reasons, but primarily it would be because I don't get accosted by sales people at every turn here. Generally speaking I like to peruse on my own and will only seek out the help of a sales person if I can't find something, so I like that I'm left to my own devices at this Ulta. Also - They've expanded their nail polish selection for both Essie and OPI over the past year or so, which is nice for this Essie devotee. I scored a pretty solid disco-fabulous gold shade last night along with a very coveted bottle of the OPI Cracked polish in black. Boo-yah! This is the spot to pick up your upscale beauty and hair care products. CVS and Walgreens sell a small selection of salon hair care products, but honestly, they just don't have the inventory or selection most gals need. Ulta is where it's at. Same with makeup. I love that they sell Benefit and Stila. It makes my life easier when I can grab everything I need in one stop. Don't like spending your dough on fancy stuff? Fear not because Ulta also has a HUGE variety of your lower end products like Maybelline, Sally Hansen and Cover Girl. Dig it. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with the degree of knowledge and service when I stopped in Ulta to pick up a lip gloss last week. I was approached (but not accosted) by a service member (Katelyn, I think) while standing, a bit lost, in a frenzy of colors in front of the Stila section. She happily let me try on the shades that I had picked out and then nicely suggested ones that would look better when my choices did not fare well. The first gloss that she suggested for me was absolutely perfect and exactly what I was looking for. I left a very happy, shiny lipped, camper! read more

I love this place, I find lots of stocking stuffers (yes I'm already Christmas shopping because I try to avoid the crowds!) for my female friends and relatives. They have a great selection of bath products and I spent about an hour yesterday smelling most of them; brands range from their own label to brands like H20+; they also seem to carry almost every brand of hair products you could want (not everything though, I still have to count on my salon for some things) They also carry a lot of nice brands of cosmetics, in addition to the drug store varieties, and probably most of the same brands of perfumes and colognes you'd find in nice department stores, without the annoying sales girls in your face the whole time The layout of the store is pretty open which makes shopping more enjoyable. I'm a product junkie, especially when it comes to bath and shower stuff like scrubs and lotions, which is why I love places like Ulta and Sephora so much- and thiis place is just as much fun as Sephora in my opinion. I have been going to this Ulta for years. Usually I just by some makeup or whatever. Prices are pretty good. Thought I'd check out the salon and let me tell you Amy is the best!! She did my hair for my wedding (a super cute and sexy 40's hair do) and I couldn't have looked better. My hair is horrible to work with (limp, crazy fine, can't hold a curl to save its soul) and yet she put these waves and curls in my hair that stayed the whole day. I heart her a lot! Stopped into an ulta just to pick up a few things I don't usually buy anywhere eelse. While there I was approached by an employee who inferred she smelled "something funny, like weed". I say inferred because she made the comment while staring dead at me and sniffing simultaneously. From then on she followed me through the store watching every move I made. I felt uncomfortable shopping and decided not to purchase anything. I Later found out her name was Laura. Here's the catch. I had money to buy things. Lots of things I wanted; but instead of spending a penny there, I chose to save it. I don't want to think it's because I'm a dark skinned girl but I didn't see anyone else being followed around. Now its gone; the shopping fun is gone. Maybe I did smell ssuspiciouly but I enjoy time to myself and time where I can spend money & enjoy myself without criticism and judgment. . It's over ulta. I'll save my business for Sephora, where I have always gotten very involved and attentive sales reps. So, I get bored with my hair. When I get bored with it, I do stupid things like cut it short. REALLY short. Wow. Not a good look on me. To cover it up, I tried box haircolor. Twice. The salon stylists there helped me to find decent shades both times, but the color wouldn't stick. My hair kept turning orange. Finally, in desperation, I went back. The same stylist remembered me and my hair (how could you not?) and fixed me up with the perfect shade. She colored it for me and three weeks later it's still fabulous. No washing out, no orange, just a beautiful shade of golden brown. Exactly what I wanted. Thanks Ulta gals! read more

I love this place. And I love the girls who work there. They will spend as much time as you need to help you in your makeup techniques. The Benefit Brow Bar is a lifesaver! I had uneven eyebrows my whole life and Cindy at the Brow Bar fixed them right up despite my skepticism. They have everything you need: from high end cosmetics to cheap bubble bath (who needs expensive bubble bath?) Now Sephora is opening down the street. Last time I was in Sephora they left me with a brow pencil that didn't even match my eyebrows. Not even close. read more
