Update: It's been almost 5 years since I've written my last review. Ulta has upped its game with better customer service and better products. Happy, I can purchase "The Ordinary" line here. Most of the time, I purchase products online. However, in a clinch, I like to go right to the Ulta store. The sales associates will go out of their way to look for a product if not in sight. She helped me pick a brand with the coverage I was looking for and what worked well with my skin. She shade matched me and gave me some tips regarding moisturizing and priming. My parents and I walked across the parking lot to return my items. I thought to myself wow this place is really nice. I love the spaciousness and the lighting. The store itself is very inviting. We perused the store and walked by several employees who never greeted us nor glanced or way. I thought to myself even if I wanted to exchange my items for something else I wouldn't. I need to scream it so everyone can hear!!! The makeup artist MARIA completely saved the day the morning of my bridal shower!!! Literal angel sent from above. Not only was she so pleasant and eager to help me from the start over the phone while making my appointment but the morning of my shower was a TOTAL NIGHTMARE and she came to the rescue! Long story short I got my hair done before arriving for my makeup appointment, I left the hair place in tears because of how bad this person did my hair. I drove hysterical over to Ulta where I would be getting my makeup done. I had arrived a few minutes before they were open, when I called I explained I had a makeup appointment and I was just a few minutes early. I was let inside and AMANDA asked me what was wrong and did everything she could to make me feel better! During my time there getting my makeup and hair redone she must have came over three or four times to make sure I was happy, she really was so sweet! MARIA ended up taking out my hair so I didn't have to look at it anymore and proceeded with my makeup to which she did an absolutely BEAUTIFUL job! Today, my daughter, who has thick curly 3c hair, had an appt for a blowout. When she arrived at the salon, the person who was supposed to do her hair looked at it and disappeared in the back. Next thing you know a manager was called, and then a lot of screaming and yelling ensued which my daughter could heat quite easily. Then they said she was "supposed" to book a silk press. Um, excuse me?!?! Not every Black person wants to get a silk press and she should not HAVE to book that. I am so sick of salons and supposed stylists whose default is thin straight hair. A salon that serves a wide variety of clientele, should be experienced in different hair types. Silk presses cost more and frankly, telling someone they HAVE to book one is discriminatory. For my daughter to stand there at a salon counter while people yell and scream in the back is both unprofessional and uncomfortable for the client. Now my daughter is back home because these supposed stylists could not get their shit together and came with every excuse in the book from shoulder surgery to just being back from God knows what. I called while my daughter was there and spoke to Jocelyn who kept insisting she had "handled it." Um, no Jocelyn, it wasn't HANDLED at all because her hair isn't done and she feels awful. Nothing was done to make her feel better or to accommodate her hair. So how is that handled???? How about on the crappy booking site you make it clear who can handle multicultural hair? I was on the fence about getting my hair curled for my cousin's wedding, but at the last minute, decided to leave it to the professionals. Hunaida did a beautiful job with my hair, and gave me the exact look I was going for. I have a lot of hair, so when I saw that the expected amount of time for the appt was 30 minutes, I budgeted more - expecting a longer time on my hair and more of a wait. I asked for a trim and she cut it straight across, crooked with my hair looking so uneven and she tried to play it off like " Oh you got a great cut for a new start the hair was dead" Uh no my hair was not dead and her eyes aren't apparently straight since my hair can't even be straightened to cover up the crookedness.. The younger sibiling to Sephora is much more spacious with friendly, helpful staff and plenty of products to get lost in! The higher end collections carried include a number Sephora carries, carried, or more extensive offerings of those at the competitor. These include Smashbox, Tarte, Stila, Urban Decay, Too Faced, Bare Escentuals, Laura Geller (used to be at Sephora), Cargo, Benefit and Lorac. They also carry CK One--yep, Calvin Klein's CK One which I never knew about, nor heard of, let alone seen. Mid range lines include Napoleon Perdis from Australia and carried in US Targets is also here as well as Pop Beauty, also in US Targets. They also carry beauty lines you'll find in your drugstore like Maybelline, Loreal, and Rimmel, but also find some harder to find lines of this price point such as NYX and Palladio. The one drawback to Ulta is it lacks the tissues, makeup remover, alcohol and cotton wipes to use when testing products. Ulta also has its own brand. They have extensive selections of hair product, nail polish and fragrance. I liked that they created a section just for men, positioned in the middle of the store (for easy access, no doubt!). This review is only for the Benefit Brow Bar. I really liked coming here to get my brows done but I recently have stopped scheduling appointments for that service at this location. I was able to schedule an appointment online, had it confirmed, etc. but when I arrived at the location, the tech wasn't there and I was told she was not working that day. This happened twice and after the second time, I decided it wasn't worth the hassle. Unless they fix their scheduling system, coming here for the brow bar is not worth the frustration. read more

On the other hand the voicemail system is too long winded. you should have a prompt to just book an appointment. I visited this Ulta because they are one of the few in the area that carry Colourpop cosmetics. I must say the comments about people getting ignored, I had the opposite experience. The staff could not be friendlier and helpful, genuine smiles and kindness...greatly appreciated. Not only was I able to walk away with a ton of colourpop, they had some really nice sale items that I bought on impulse. Clifton will tag their sale items, I don't see this in other Ulta stores and who doesn't like a good bargain. This ulta is pretty comparable to the Edgewater and Maywood stores as far as selection, cleanliness, size and inventory. The location is weird but I am not used to the overwhelming Rte. 3 miles of strip malls. Parking was fine for me and it was a bonus that a Trader Joe's and Pet Valu were next door. I had a hair appointment here a few weeks ago and while I was on the way, the store called me 15-20 minutes before my appointment. I was actually glad they called because I needed to reschedule it, I was having car trouble. Then the girl asked me where I was- as if I was supposed to be there already. Before I even had the chance to say anything, the sales associate started scolding me saying if I knew I couldn't make it, I should have called earlier etc... I apologized and explained that my car actually started overheating MINUTES earlier and the first thing I do when my car OVERHEATS is definitely NOT try to dial the phone number of freaking Ulta clifton while I'm on the highway, hoping my car doesn't explode. The prices are decent, the selection of products is ehh, but the number of employees there is limited. I was at the store at 8pm (yesterday) 23rd of February 2017. I could not find one single employee to help me. First, I needed help in matching a foundation... asked the cashier it apparently that wasn't their department. This person did not offer to call someone over as they are "closing the store now" (820pm). Next, I was looking for someone to assist me in finding a product, or at least pointing me in the right direction... but no one was around either. After wondering the store for the next 25 minutes an announcement was made that the store was closing and to head to the cash register. I was about 4th in line out of 5 people. At this point I was getting frustrated... there was only one register open, the other person was pretending to do something in order to not check people out. She was shuffling through bags going to and from the door. She was unlocking and locking it but not at corresponding times (as she was locking the door walking back to the cash register, a client would walk past her to the door and had to wait to be let out). The person that was in fact checking people out, seemed new. They kept looking at this other person for help but she wasn't catching the hint. As it came to my turn to be checked out (finally... as it is already past 9pm) the 2 workers switched and I was being checked out by this lazy worker. I took this opportunity to ask the questions I was looking to the answers for earlier but to no surprise she gave me "I don't know" "maybe" "I guess" answers. Honestly... I like Ulta, I do. It's nice to go somewhere that has a nice mix of high end and drug-store products and that has an extensive line of hair styling tools at a variety of price points. However.... this location sucks. It's dirty, samples are all over the place, the selection is picked over. I went there at 11am on a Sunday, so it's not like the store had been open for hours. And there are people who work there just wandering around and talking. Organize some stuff! Did the people who closed the night before really leave it like that? Also, their clearance section is composed of just stuff that should be thrown out. It's nice that you're now selling hair pomade for 1.79 when it used to be 7.00, but if it looks like someone's fingers have been digging in it, I'm thinking it's just trash. The whole place needs an overhaul and/or employees who care a bit more about presentation. I realize that inventory is something they don't have any control of, but someone above their heads should be taking a look at it. It's not like just one color was gone, I'm talking about entire sections of eye shadows, all gone and in every shade. I'm sorry, but I can't be bothered to drive down Route 3, u-turn and manipulate that horror show parking lot if I'm never going to find anything. I'm a low maintenance kind of girl. I own 1 piece of makeup: mascara I own 2 pieces of facial products: cleanser, moisturizer I own 3 pieces of hair products: shampoo, conditioner, frizz control somethingorother But all that is changing after I visited ULTA. Went in for mascara and walked out with 6 items. Suddenly a microdermabrasion cream seemed like something I really needed. Hyaluronic acid? Sure, I need that too. Eye cream? I'm not getting any younger. I walked out with items that I should probably have bought a long time ago. I also walked out with things I probably didn't need (calming sleep pillow spray? yeah, well it turns out I really did need that too!). Sephora always scared me. I didn't like the salespeople constantly on top of me. I didn't like the strong smell of perfume and fragrance in such a small space. I only went in there infrequently to buy mascara and leave as fast as possible. ULTA is different. For one, it is WAY bigger inside. No one bothered me. I browsed forever. I read labels. I tried samples of products and it seems that just about every item has a "tester" to try. The little stations on the end of aisles contain everything you need to test, apply and clean off the products you try. I didn't want to leave but they were getting ready to close. ULTA is like a chain drugstore, Sephora, and high end salon/beauty product place all rolled into one comfortable experience. I'll definitely be back (for more than just mascara!) soon. read more

Warning for Ulta hair salon customers--- found out it is Ulta company policy that they will NEVER under any circumstance give you the formula for your own hair coloring (for upkeep.) So if you move or travel and need to know your hair coloring for the new salon-- the stylist will refuse to give it to you. Ulta is basically trapping the customer. After speaking with Ulta corporate, I was told that my $300 color, cut, & style does NOT include the formula knowledge of my own hair coloring. Dishonest of Ulta considering this "policy" is nowhere to be found. Not even found on receipts. Glad I will be going elsewhere. Ulta has little confidence in their stylists/hairdressers. read more

This location is the closest to me and to be honest, I have yet to step foot into another Ulta. Although I haven't really purchased much make-up out of Ulta (I'm a Sephora type of girl), they have an enough of a selection for emergencies. I love their selection of hair products and it is mostly the products that I purchase at this store. There hasn't been a time I've gone in and came out empty handed. I mostly shop at Sephora but I believe Ulta has a better rewards program. I have been able to utilize points and apply discounts towards purchases. They are great with giving away samples (you've got to ask for them at the register!) I have used the salon once before. I got a cut and a blow dry. It was definitely better than what I expected. My cut came out great and I left with a shiny head of hair. Overall, the staff is nice but not outwardly helpful. The only positive aspect of my experience at ULTA was the price, although I found out halfway through that there was a deal for new customers... but apparently I didn't qualify because I had a "master stylist." (she was the salon manager) I did not get to choose my stylist so if I knew the deal was an option I would have been sure to request a newer stylist... but ANYWAY... 20 minutes before my appointment, my stylist called and asked if I could come an hour later... I said I couldn't because I was coming with a friend and that would inconvenience both of us. My stylist seemed to understand. When I arrived the receptionist told my friend and I that we were "too early" and to come back in 15 mins. We were right on time, but we said okay and left to grab something to eat. We came back about 20 min later and my stylist had me sit in a chair in the cape... and then left me there FOR OVER AN HOUR. She did not even TOUCH my hair until an hour and a half after my scheduled appointment! I feel like she was just trying to cover up the fact that she double booked. I thought it was incredibly rude and inconsiderate and a huge waste of an hour and a half of my life. The color came out okay, I wish it was lighter- my stylist dumped toner on my head and then left me alone in the back room with my head in the sink for about 15 minutes with no explanation... I almost considered getting up, but at this point my experience was too far gone. I will not be back to this specific location.... and would definitely not recommend unless you have nothing better to do with your time. read more

Desperately needed a cut so I decided to try the Beaty salon and honestly I'm glad I did! My stylist Yngrid who was very nice and helpful gave my hair life again. Not only did she fix my bangs that I PERSONALLY MESSED UP BY CUTTING THEM MYSELF, but she also gave my hair so much volume. My cut was $45 and honestly so worth it.
