This is a hard review to make. I'd give it a 3 in terms of cost:outcome then a 5 for the cleanliness, aesthetic, & owners ability to put me first in an effective way. For starters I was in an emergency situation and thankfully they could squeeze me in as a first timer and make my emergency less of the nightmare I imagined. Felt like a real miracle moment and I thought the owner handled my call effectively. Her admin was not so knowledgeable to help tend to me over the phone but thankfully the owner felt the need to take over the call. She decided to FaceTime me to see my state of emergency and assess (smart & effective on her part) & determine viability. I was able to go in, and she relaxed me by assuring they could handle my seemingly worst hair emergency. Now, the bad news is I paid $125 for my braids to start unraveling day 4. As she was braiding I was wondering if her straight-back method was the right method for how she'd cut my hair. Yet her confidence claimed I'd need to keep the braids for 2-3weeks then return for a refresh. They didn't even make it 1 week! Then, I call to address it & an admin or stylist says they don't do what I'm asking and essentially that was the only way the stylist could do my hair. I so hated the lack of concern for my hair and money, along with the brevity. I thought I was leaving with a new salon home. It was so free of dust, clean, & pretty. Based on their business practices, I would not recommend this salon to anyone - at all. (They're also very much overpriced - then again, that's their right) I first went to this salon 1 year ago. At that time, I was quoted one price for service, and charged another. Nevertheless, I was happy with the style and stylist, I thought maybe *I* misunderstood what I was told regards cost - I paid (cash) and moved on. I recently returned for the same service. I arrived on time for my appointment - actually, that's not accurate - I arrived 10 minutes early. My stylist was late. Before we started, I asked her 2 clear and pointed questions: -what is the cost for the service -would I be done by 12:30pm I had to be at work at a certain time so schedule was critical for me. I was told we'd finish in time, and we did. Once done, I looked at my ticket of charges. The price was HIGHER THAN I WAS TOLD. When I asked why, I was told it was because she needed to use conditioner. Really? We're going to play THAT game?! I ASKED *BEFORE* we started what the price was going to be. On checking out, there was an additional charge because I paid with my credit card. I asked the lady at the front desk what's going on here - I didn't know there was additional for method of payment. She looked at me like I was crazy - as if I SHOULD have KNOWN and EXPECTED the extra charge. "How would I know that" I asked her. "There's no signage or notice stating so". She told me they've always charged extra for card payments. I just can't. I won't even go into the fact they're supposed to have notice posted to inform customers. read more

90s throwback asinine salon behavior! As a professional, who values efficiency and respects the time of fellow high-functioning individuals, my experience with Salon Femi has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Initially, when I embarked on my natural hair journey with Nia back in 2017, I was thrilled. She not only respected my time but also provided invaluable guidance and professionalism, particularly as I dealt with the challenge of thinning hair. However, the excitement took a nosedive in 2023 when I decided to go blonde and was informed that Kenya, the owner, would be handling my transformation due to her expertise in this area. What began as a promising partnership quickly turned into a series of disappointments and frustrations. Despite my specific instructions regarding my time constraints, appointments with Kenya routinely started late, causing disruptions to my schedule and forcing me to compromise on essential aspects of my salon experience. What's worse, the duration of these appointments skyrocketed, with each visit stretching to an average of 4 to 5 hours, a far cry from the efficient service I had come to expect. The final straw came during my last appointment when I was left waiting for over two hours (before getting into the chair), only to be met with unprofessional behavior and subpar service. When I made the appointment, I explicitly informed the reservationist that I do not require accommodation and do not want to be "fit in". I indicated that I would come in another day if necessary. I was CLEAR about my desire to have an actual appointment time! So, you can imagine, it was surprising to meet the owner's dismissive attitude towards my having waited hours prior to getting into the chair and her blatant indifference about the health of my hair during the bleaching process. Further, during my service, the owner had her own hair bleached. She then proceeded to flaunt that, "see, I washed my hair before bleaching... I am not afraid of bleach, cutting my hair, etc." She was now mocking me for asking about the health of my hair! This coupled with a blatant disregard for basic hygiene practices, when product dripped into my eye, left me feeling utterly disrespected and undervalued as a customer. To add insult to injury, the exorbitant charges on my bill, including a markup for services not rendered as promised, further underscored the lack of integrity within the establishment. When handed the red ticket (see attached) after (6 hours) it included: * $65 for "blow dry styling," but received a mold with about an inch of hair. * $125 for a "double process" bleach, which was literally just her adding a second coat of bleach to my one-inch hair and not actually taking the time to remove the bleach and reapply a "second process",. * AND FINALLY, the $65 "conditioner" is $55 more than the stated $10+ deep conditioner on the website. Again, my hair is 1 inch. HOW is this reasonable? In conclusion, while I had hoped to continue supporting Salon Femi, I can no longer in good conscience recommend it to fellow discerning individuals who prioritize quality and professionalism. It pains me to say this, but the owner's leadership sets a disappointing precedent that I cannot overlook. Don't waist your time or money! read more

I began going to this salon about 10 years ago, when I followed my stylist there. One of the very first things that I noticed, was that they used quality products, adhered to appointment times, and took the time to learn everyone's name who entered into the door. As a person with a decent amount of hair, who stays with a packed schedule, and who'd only had 2 stylists prior, the aforementioned qualities were extremely important to me. Since then, so much has changed in my life. I would not visit Salon Femi again. First, this salon is well overpriced. The prices I was quoted online weren't the same price that I received in the salon while I was at the wash bowl and half of the services were already completed. I couldn't believe it. I left paying well over $200 and I the quote I received was probably less than half that amount. I can't say anything was done that was spectacular and the amount of time it took was completely outrageous. It took about 4 hours and I have a pixie cut. She left me under the hair dryer for about an hour and it takes my hair less than 30 mins to dry. This was one of the worst experiences I've had in awhile and won't be returning. I went in yesterday for the first time and I couldn't have had a better experience! The owner Kenya took her time with me and gave me a consultation for my hair. She gave me tips, suggestions, recommendations and actually taught me a few things about hair care so I can maintain healthy locs going forward.. I was extremely pleased with her demeanor... she then introduced me to my stylist KIM! let me tell you .... Kim is amazing ! I've never had a stylist give me exactly what I wanted when I wasn't even sure what I wanted. She is a hair genius and was able to transform my dead and broken ends into a beautiful layered bob cut ! She explained everything throughout the whole process and was SO PATIENT with me. She was EXTREMELY PROFESSIONAL and never once seemed irritated about my anxiety ridden questions ( believe it or not MANY stylist can not so subtly give off an irritated vibe ). I was apprehensive about doing a shorter cut but she tailored it to my face and it's super cute. So, my story begins with me trying to locate a natural hair salon, and stumbling upon this business.. I was excited because of the images online, and the reviews. So i promptly called in to make my appointment. Some back story: I am trying to grow out my hair and transition from processing back to my natural texture. I wanted to remove my weave, do a lite partial relaxer (dubbbed a texlax) , do some cornrows, as I intend to use a u Part wig as a protective style. When I called, someone picked up presumably the receptionist. She asked what I wanted done? I explained. Her response, blew my mind and honestly ruined the rest of my day. She said "Oh, no! We can't do that, we don't do corn rows! We only do finished hair heah!" (Here is spelled incorrectly, because that is what she sounded like) I asked who are you to tell me what is finished TO ME! I was so angry, I did not get a chance to explain what was going on and that I wanted help with installing a U Part wig, and that I would pay well for my seemingly irregular request. I hung up, and immediately changed my mind. I called the manager and told her what happened I got an apology but no action as to rectify the unprofessionalism of her employee. The old adage comes to mind, it is not what you say. It is how you say it. In short, a beautifully designed salon does not trump good customer service on any day of the week. Unfortunately although this salon has a "polished" look", this is where the professionalism ends. When I moved to Bloomfield I was excited about finding a salon to get my relaxer touch ups at. I made an appt with Kenya, but when I arrived she handed me over to another stylist who didn't seem to be as experienced. Initially I was quoted 80 but was told a I had to pay 130 at the end even though I did not add on any additional services. I also got some awkward stares not a friendly vibe from the other salon employees.I think it was due to the fact I am of African descent with 4c hair. Finding a salon is very difficult but I think I have finally found my new salon. I really like this place. The owner Kenya is very professional, skilled, pleasant and cheerful. The salon is clean and has a nice ambiance and vibe. All of the stylist here are skilled and do hair well especially the stylist who are in the back row (I don't know their names but one is a Hispanic lady and the other is a gentleman). Everyone is kind and seems to have great energy. Kenya is very knowledgeable about hair. I have been looking for a stylist that I can build a trusting hair relationship with so that one day I can tell them to try something new or different and actually trust them to do something I will like. Kenya is that person and it seems as if everyone in this salon has that same skill. The products they use are good and my hair usually last for 2 weeks. So I came to this salon based on the reviews. I've lived in NJ for 3 years now and I have always had a hit and miss with the salons servicing natural hair. I needed a style so I can go to a meeting the following week. I had cut my hair in early January after a bad faux locks installation. So 4 months later I came to Salon Femi. My crown and glory has different textures every where so I know it can be a challenge. Please note this is my experience I cannot say for others. I called 1 week before the date I need and the receptionist was pleasant on the phone. I told her I wanted a blow out and trim. Unfortunately when she repeated it to me she add a press and curl.She hung up before I could correct her but that's okay I figured I could correct it when I got there. What was unexpected was the email reminder I received reconfirming my appointment two days before the appointment. I thought this was a great touch! This had me thinking I had made a great choice. I walked in the salon 5 minuets before my appointment. I checked with the receptionist and was introduced to my stylist Kim. Of course I googled her and found out she had worked at another natural salon staple in Jersey previously. I had made a mental note during my research to ask her since I wanted to try that salon out too. But unfortunately as I expound below I didn't get a chance to ask. Kim asked me what I wanted and I told her I was looking for perhaps a blow out, trim and cornrow my hair. I figured I would keep the braids in and rock a braid out for my meeting. Kim informed me that she does natural hair but doesn't do cornrows. In my head I had was like errrr? But whatever. She consulted with Kenya on what to do. Given I would be getting a trim she wasn't sure if I could get cornrows due to length and suggested coils instead. I agreed. So Kim washed and conditioned and cut my hair. Yes I did say cut because frankly I don't think she blew my hair out enough to TRIM it. But its whatever she gave me a shape which was fine. So by now your thinking why the 3 stars? In the 1hr that I was with Kim she didn't speak to me ONCE other than to ask what I wanted! That is first for me. She didn't try to learn about me and my hair to even give suggestions on what I could do with it in the future. She would call me over, but not by my name but rather by a hand gesture. Not Kosher. Granted I remembered her name and I introduced myself so I don't think she forgot my name. EVEN if she did forget she could have asked. When she was done with me she passed me over to another stylist for my coils. Again no one called me by name just a gesture to where they wanted me. No one spoke to me. It was as if I was a mannequin there for practice. What killed me was when the young lady doing my coils decided to yell across the salon for Kenya. Granted Kenya couldn't hear her but I could because she was yelling in my ear!!!!!!. Then she and another stylist proceed to talk about another client who happened to be in the salon, in front of me with profane language. Now the other stylist did reprimand her saying she shouldn't curse in front of a client but then proceeded to say that the other client was annoying him too! SMH. I couldn't. It left a bad taste in my mouth. I felt uncomfortable being in a place that should be a positive atmosphere. At that point I knew I would not be returning.. Styling hair to me is an intimate thing between a stylist and the client. There is a trust that is placed there which extends to the salon itself. You will not make money from me and then proceed to gossip about me. Although I will say Kenya has a great attitude! I enjoyed watching her interactions with her clients and staff. One word of advise I would give is be conscious of those around you and how you speak around new clients. Unfortunately Salon Femi has lost a potential client in me. Oh by the way I think I'm allergic to whatever they used in my hair because later that night my scalp began to itch. The itching continued until I washed my hair and scalp two days later. read more

My review begins and ends with Maira. My daughters and I have been Maira's clients for the past ten years. Her work is, quite simply, stellar! She is always professional, takes care to schedule clients in the best interest of their time, and is honest and direct about potential delays in advance of the client's arrival. Maira is quite friendly and personable but isn't the type of stylist who constantly talks to others in the salon while she is working. Maira works! My girls and I are natural with color and Maira smooths out our curls with a rapid ease. The finished result is always bouncy and beautiful locks. I'll post a photo of my daughters' hair. The top row is all one daughter and the bottom row is my other daughter. They have distinctly different curl patterns and Maira doesn't miss a beat. Salon Femi is not a "doobie spot." We don't do that and if that's your thing, you'll be shocked at the prices, the culture, the professionalism and pretty much your entire experience. If you're the type of client who needs a peaceful and professional upscale salon... go ahead and schedule. Enjoy! I've decided to add a word of caution about other reviews. I visited Salon Femi two weeks ago for a silk wrap with Nia because she was recommended by a friend. Nia did a wonderful job! The salon is nice and comfortable. They offered coffee and tea. I only gave fours stars because of the time it took to do a silk wrap. My appointment was at 1pm and I arrived on time. I waited for more than an hour to be seen, and did not leave until 5:35pm. I would love to come here, but for a simple service, I should have been done no later than 4pm with a consultation. Time is important to me as well as healthy hair. Nia did extremely well with the hair aspect. I recommend Nia and Salon Femi - Just be ready to spend the day there. read more

I have never had a salon experience like this one! The staff and service are absolutely amazing. The staff respect each other and value their customers. They respect my time and truly are consummate professionals. The ambiance in the salon is always relaxing and the conversations pleasant and meaningful. My hair stylist, Maira cares for my hair exceptionally well and makes taking care of my hair between salon visits so easy for me. I truly believe to have the expertise and service provided here starts with good leadership --the salon owner Kenya is phenomenal! Over the past few months, I observed her and noticed that she greets every single customer not just her own and I can see that her standard is excellence. If I could give a million stars... I would Just got my hair done today and I couldn't wait to write my review as well as sharing my experience. Soon as I walked in I was in love with how beautiful the salon looked. How the salon looks I feel reflects on the hairstylists. I was greeted by the receptionist who helped me schedule my appointment. I have to add that in because I made my first appointment and mixed up the dates so I missed it. The receptionist accommodated me with scheduling another appointment for a sooner date with no problem, with the talented Nia. I saw Nia's work on their Facebook and just loved it. I consulted with her explaining my story with my hair and why I've decided to cut it. She made sure throughout the process that I was sure of cutting my hair which showed me she cared about her clients' hair. I also engaged with the owner Kenya, who just boosted my confidence throughout my time there. She made me feel so comfortable. For Valentine's Day, they were doing something a little special for all clients, strawberries, a glass of wine and the best part that made me love them more, a rose that they gave to me and others when we were done. Overall, the staff, the vibe of the salon, and the salon itself is just so radiant. Ignore all bad reviews (if there is any). Nia took her time with cutting my hair, making sure that it was something that I wanted to do rather than just cutting all my hair off. The styling was just the icing on the cake as she recommended me to get the coils. Now I can't stop looking at myself in the mirror. Thank you Nia & Salonfemi Can't wait to return soon! After moving to NJ my first stop was the hair salon! Came here from a friends recommendation. On my first impression the salon was very clean, comfortable, and staff greeted me as I walked in for my appointment. I thought I was coming in for track removal, cut, and color. Turns out I had a major hair disaster to sit through. Kenya and her staff member Tiana were so patient & positive and carefully worked with my situation. After spending 7 hours in the salon I walked out with unrelaxed hair that looked super healthy, smooth and shiny. I have to give major credit to Kenya and Tiana for never giving up and helping me through such a horrible experience. I will definitely return! read more

I have been to Salon Femi two times and I plan on never going back. Here is why: The first time I went I was super excited because I was referred by a friend. I wanted to get my hair shaped and burgundy color on the ends. Before Nia (a stylist) touched my hair, the owner, Kenya, told me my hair was damaged and I wouldn't be able to get color this time and that is her "professional advice". I couldn't understand why she considered my hair damaged especially since I hadn't had a perm nor strengthened my hair in over five years and take very good care of my hair. After the stylist, Nia, washed my hair Kenya said, "oh your hair isn't damaged at all but you'll have to come back for color". I wondered why, before she even thoroughly assessed my hair, she decided it was damaged.  I decided to go back again, despite having a less than ideal experience the first time, because I received a great cut from Nia and wanted it again. I didn't even bother asking for color and asked for a stretched fro. So, I showed my stylist, Nia, and she said she COULD do it. She shaped it, twisted my hair and put me under the dryer. When she styled my hair, and told me she was done, I told her that this isn't what I wanted. She asked me to her show her the photo again and I did but this time she told me I could not achieve the look because of my hair texture. Why wasn't my texture an issue when I initially show her the photo? Instead of arguing I got up to go pay and I saw her whispering to the owner, clearly talking about me. So, I waited patiently to speak to the owner, Kenya, and I expressed that I wasn't happy with my hair.  Kenya asked me to show her the picture and these are the ridiculous things she proceeds to say to me:  1. The woman in the picture doesn't have the same texture as me so I couldn't achieve that look. She proceeds to say that I probably don't know my own texture and this is her "professional advice". I said everyone can achieve an afro regardless of their hair texture and that's what I wanted. 2.Then she told me that I didn't need to come to a hair salon for that, that I could have done it on my own. So basically, it is possible to achieve this look regardless of my texture and apparently, it's so easy I could have done it at home...interesting...I told her I could have also done a twist out on my hair at home too.  3.Then she said that Salon Femi does "polished looks", and this fro look isn't polished. So, a natural hair salon that serves "85%" natural haired woman is telling a black woman that a fro isn't polished look...interesting...sounds like anti-blackness to me or better yet texture discrimination.   4.Then she said certain ETHNICITIES can achieve this look. So, my "type "of black is too black for this look. Good to know. 5.To top it all off...after she talked herself in circles and as if she hadn't already made herself look crazy...she told me maybe I just didn't have good chemistry with my hair stylist.  Chemistry wasn't an issue until I expressed I didn't like the outcome of my hair.  Long story short this salon has very specific ideals on what is "polished" and what can be done to your hair based on your texture. All I wanted was a stretched fro and instead I got a multitude of excuses and disrespected. Take your money elsewhere. read more
