I like coming here for one of the girls who works at the Lancôme counter because she was so honest and not looking to upsell me things I just did not need. I'm not a makeup expert, in fact I stay far away from it because my skin does not love being covered and I'm allergic to a lot of things. Long story short, she made me feel very comfortable in a place where I felt out of my comfort zone, and I appreciate that. That's why I come back to this Ulta--I also love their return policy. I brought a picture of the cut and style I wanted. I also noted the changes in my hair, as it has turned gray and wavy, something I am not used to. She informed me that she had just graduated from beauty school and was not instructed on how to cut short hair. WHAT A JOKE! Why wasn't this posted on your "Meet the Stylist" page as an expert stylist? My appointment was completely deleted without a record of whether it was scheduled. Where do I start. I am getting married in one week and I had been saving learning about makeup and how to use it for months. I walked in very nervous and saw the large selection and well groomed employees and felt welcomed and comfortable enough to just be honest and vulnerable about my ignorance in the cosmetic field. And then like a knight in shining eyeshadow ... I saw Sean the gorgeous friendly face that I approached and basically opened up to about my fears and hesitation and was so relieved when he welcomed my visit with open arms. He explained the products thoroughly, he gave me the freedom to choose and helped me with professional advice on what he believed to look best when I truly didn't know. He never ONCE in our almost hour and a half long tutorial made me feel rushed or pushy for specific products, and even more .. for the first time in my whole life - made me feel beautiful with makeup on. He showed me how to repeat this process at my own pace and independently for when I would be at jimmy wedding. He watched me and guided me as I tried it myself. At the end, the result was so profound and naturally dramatic that I cried and later that night - brought my fiancé to tears also. Sean is hands down the BEST experience as a person I have ever experienced in a retail setting, beauty setting, - anywhere - that I have ever been fortunate enough to work with. I had an appointment to get my makeup done with Ashley Sue for my baby shower. I'll let the photo speak for itself. This was taken immediately after leaving the store. False lashes were already off since they were falling off before I even left the chair, but this was "finished", just needing lip applied. Absolutely horrible results and a waste of over an hour on what was already a hectic day for me. Ashley Sue should not be allowed to offer makeup services if this is her consistent performance. She and her 39 years of experience have enough attitude to bridge the gap between your desires and what she thinks you should have. BTW, my previous cut at another ULTA was perfect-- all I wanted was for her to copy that one--a simple bob. (They're still closed due to Covid-19) When I got home, I realized the back of my hair was cut 3" shorter than the front of my hair and as we we were discussing the cut I told her that I ABSOLUTELY DID NOT want that sort of a cut. But she made sure to tell me at least 5 times that she had 39 years of experience and knew what she was doing. Of course she answered the phone 6 or 7 times while she was cutting my hair so I guess she just forgot what I asked her to do or what I asked her specifically NOT to do. I'm not sure what hurts more: being completely disregarded or having a cut I absolutely HATE. Yes, I left her a 30% tip-- because I won't let her attitude change who I am. I will be going back on her day off to see if I can find someone able to correct what she has done and trim up all the chunks of hair that stick out below the line of my bob as well as somehow-- please Jesus-- even out my cut. ***** UPDATE: Went in to show the store manager and she completely understood. Went in to see Melanie at the salon to get some highlights for the first time and a trim. She was very nice and excited to do my hair because it was "unicorn hair" she called it. I had never gotten highlights before so I wasn't really sure what I wanted and she walked me through the options before she started. I ended up getting balayage highlights and I love them so much! read more

Overall it's like any ulta, it's okay. This store is like Sephora but carries over the counter makeup as well. The ranges is from nyx to cover girl, all the prices are reasonable. I don't shop here unless I really need to, if Sephora out of a certain product. read more

I've been to this store several times since I've moved here. The first two times, no one asked me if I needed help or anything. Granted, I knew what I wanted anyway, but I digress. I do think that some of the associates help you based on whether you look like you know about makeup or not. The last two times I've been to this store, I was lucky to have been helped. I came in looking for the James Charles X Morphe collab and the girl at the register told me when their trucks come in with products (although she didn't know what was going to be on the truck, which is understandable). When I came in looking for the palette the next time, I found it right away on a display and one of the associates helped me find some setting powder. My experience wasn't as bad as some of the other reviewers, but like I said before, I do think that some of them help you based on whether you have makeup already. I visited Ulta yesterday as a walk-in to have my hair wash, dried and styled . I have used this location in the past for myself and my daughter to have our hair done, and I was 100% satisfied with our stylists; however, this time I was not. This experience was AWFUL at best. Sadly, I don't know her name, as she never introduced herself and I never asked. Now, I wish I had. I do know though, that she's 60, (she did tell me that) has orange-ish hair, sits directly behind the register, and she's incredibly RUDE. After, AFTER she washed my hair and I was walking back to her station, she said "oh, I only wash and dry, I don't do any kind of styling, I forgot to tell you that. I hope that's okay." REALLY?? Perhaps she should have mentioned that when I said that I wanted my hair "washed, dried and flat ironed." No big deal. I let that slide. Now, she begins to comb through my hair and then proceeds to tell me that my hair is "so bad that it almost has dreads," and that I "should really do something about it." Funny, nobody else has every complained about my long, thick, straight-as-a-board hair, nor has any other stylist (my last two visits for hair services were in NOVEMBER) had any issues combing through my hair. This is when she gave herself an open opportunity to tell my that I "NEED to get a wet brush, otherwise my hair is going to stay tangly." As if that experience wasn't rude enough, eventually she took to MOCKING other customers!! Two young ladies came to the counter, she stopped working on my hair and asked them what they needed. One of the girls paused for a brief second and then asked "how much are cuts?" To which she responded "it depends on who does it. It can be forty, fifty or sixty." The two girls said "thank you," and walked away. The lady came back to finish the terrible job she did on my hair only to make fun of the girl for stuttering asking how much a hair cut was. WOW! I was STUNNED she had the nerve to make fun of potential clients!!! Fast forward to the end of my awful experience and she adds "you NEED four inches cut off," to which I replied "NOT going to happen." I type/write all of this NOT to discourage anyone from patronizing this particular Ulta as my experience here had always been wonderful, but rather to discourage anyone from using the 60 year old, orange-red haired, (not meant to be derogatory, but rather as a way to identify her without actually knowing her name) rude and unprofessional stylist, otherwise you'll pay a high price for TERRIBLE work! I will add, I DID tip her just over 10%, because while the "service" she provided SUCKED, she still did provide a service. Hopefully her next client has a better experience than I did. read more

This place has gone downhill. I used to be greeted immediately at the door with a bag and assistance with finding products. The women were always done up and looking fabulous with the use of their products. I could ask a question & they immediately had a knowledgeable answer. Now when I ask for help they have no idea what they're talking about or how to direct me. I went in yesterday and the employees looked like they rolled out of bed. None of them had any makeup on and the cashiers shirt was stained & wrinkled. I couldn't find one person to help me. Not to mention they were out of stock of many products. Had to move around a girl sitting in the aisle using multiple eyeliner pencils of various thickness to doodle on her hands and then watched her put the pencils back on the shelf. A minute later, the same girl got up to go work the cash register. Employees should absolutely know better. I made an appointment for my daughter (hair and makeup) for 3pm. we got there on time, nonetheless the hairdresser was busy with another person (she kept on saying she was almost done with that person). it was close to 4pm when the hairdresser began with my daughter. Not only didn't she have a clue on what to do with curly hair (soft curls / hispanic hair), but she didn't do what we asked. My daughter wanted defined curls, she ended up with straight hair! As for the makeup, I could have done a better job at my house! At 6pm, I told the lady to just stop and wrap it up, since we had to leave (had been giving hints since 5:30 that we had to leave at 6 sharp!). She then proceeded to charge more than what we were initially quoted, and charge extra because my daughter had "a lot of hair". I decided to just pay and get out of the place, as we were already late for an activity we had that day. One of the most depressing things about moving from DC to Fredericksburg was the loss of my beloved Sephora. My fiance keeps telling me that they may open one soon, but I doubt it. He suggested that ULTA might do as a fill-in for my beloved shop, so we checked it out last weekend. I have to say I'm impressed! No, they don't carry all the brands that Sephora does, but they DO carry a lot of brands that CVS does, so I really like the convenience of being able to buy my Sally Hansen nail polish and my Smashbox foundation in the same store. They also carry a variety of candles (I know where I'm picking up my bridal shower hostess gift!) and it's heaven if you love nail polish. There's also a small salon in the back of the store, which I wasn't expecting. Unlike Sephora, ULTA always has coupons, so you can save money and be gorgeous at the same time. read more

This store is just okay. It's like any regular old Ulta that you would go to. I usually shop at Sephora and occasionally shop here for anything that's not offered at Sephora. I feel as though there's way too much pressure for them to ask you to sign up for their Rewards Royalty Program. I always decline because I don't come to Ulta that often. If I say no the first time I feel as though that should be enough, end of story. I gave my email address yesterday and I was magically signed up despite me declining. I know it's probably required by the higher ups or management, but they need cut this down to a minimum. Like if a customer says no the first time...don't ask anymore. read more

I was looking into scheduling a hair appointment with Ulta. However, my friend had a horrible experience today so I am posting her story to warn others in advance. My friend scheduled her appointment week ahead and when she went in today she was told by Lisa, the stylist, that the appointment would not be fulfilled because she didn't believe that my friend's hair was actually blonde and it was "too much work and effort" to help her with her new dark blonde roots. All my friend wanted was her roots to match her blonder ends. It's not hard. She handed my friend her business card and told her to come back when she had researched about how hard being a hair stylist is and when my friend learned about hair coloring and proceeded to walk away and laugh. She also told my friend that she "didn't look like I could afford a 140 dollar service" because she was "like 16".. DON'T go to Ulta Beauty for any hair service. She also called Customer Service and got hung up on! PLEASE AVOID THIS ULTA AT ALL COSTS. read more

I went for a haircut with a person I had seen just once before. She did a wonderful job. Today, I arrived maybe 10 minutes before my appointment time. She said she was running late--which I understand. She offered to do a conditioning (or whatever) while I waited. It was 1.5 hours before she finished with her previous client. I am a full time working mother and wife with very limited time. Time for myself is especially rare or available and I wasted it on a hairstylist that didn't value it. Rather than cancelling or rescheduling me, she just had me wait on her for 1.5 hours. I did not get the haircut because I ran out of time. She said she would give me whatever treatment she did for free, when all I wanted was a haircut and the value of my time. So if you are patient and are okay with not having your time valued--then it's great. You'll probably be satisfied with the work. But if you are like me and have small windows where you can take care of yourself and don't have the space to have those windows disrespected--then this isn't for you. read more

My stylist melanie was very nice my entire appointment however she really did not meet my expectations. My goal for my hair was to be platinum and i knew it wouldnt be realistic to go that bright off the bat. Melanie agreed and said it would probably be two sessions which was fine by me. My appointment lasted three hours. I really liked my hair when she was finished but when i got home i had a chance to inspect it. She curled it which i personally dont really like on me. So I straightened it and really saw what was going on. She had missed several pieces when cutting. My roots were LIGHTER than my ends because she had put the bleach all over my head which i even know is a no no because they process faster. I EVEN asked for a shadow root. Several parts of my hair are way lighter than the rest. Im very upset. I feel ugly. I feel like my hair looked better before. Im just mainly upset because i was super happy when she was done. But now my hair looks like a mess and im embarrassed to even have it like this. I feel bad because i really did like Melanie i just wish my hair looked how i wanted it. I have mix feelings! When I first started coming to Ulta years ago the girls were always snobby and rude. Recently they hired some really great employees. I mean, of course you still have 1 or 2 girls who need a wake up call that there S*** stinks like the rest of us.. haha. But seriously it's gotten better and I love that they're open about hiring gay men to work because honestly they're the ones I look for because 1. There so nice but 2. They know more about makeup than the girls 99% of the time haha. I came in to get my hair done and they gave me apparently "the best" girl who everyone likes even all the stylist were raving about how she does hair.... 1.) she fried my hair 2. I wanted blonde hair and she randomly put a out of place brown patch under my head so "when I put my hair up it looks natural" but in reality i looked like I had a skunk tail...... I decided to go and give it another try and when I went to ask questions on advice on what I wanted and how to achieve it.... this older woman was rude as heck and acting like she knew all the answers and kept interrupting me without letting me finish my sentences...... she kept saying I had to bleach my head to achieve a light ash blonde look when in reality you don't you just have to do a color correction. I know I've gotten it before and when I asked to get a price check she kept saying you can't.... we'll guess what!!!!. I WENT SOMEWHERE ELSE AND NO BLEACH!. ULTA has been here in Fredericksburg for years and the most I've came in for is either some lipgloss or mascara. Back in April I came in on my prom day because ULTA was running a prom special for makeup, hair, and nails all for $90 which I thought was pretty decent. I will admit the first couple minutes I was there I wasn't too impressed. My hair stylist was behind on the appointment before me and if it was any other time I wouldn't have minded but just because I was on a tight schedule because I had dinner plans at 6 and my hair appointment was at 4 and my stylist didn't even get me back till 5 it threw me back a bit but in that time I went and got my makeup done and it came out great. I was so impressed I actually went back at a later time and bought the palatte my makeup artist used. My nail technician did a great job too she took her time and really did a great job making my french tip look nails with just the OPI gel polish. Although I experienced some trouble at the beginning and a time crunch everything came out great and I hope they run this special for homecoming! read more

Not sure what's up with this location. There were 15 customers in line and two people on register. There were many associates walking around asking people if they needed help. I've worked in retail so understand there are a lot of other tasks that they need to take care of but why couldn't they put at least one more associate on the register? Thank goodness I found Ella!!! I have been looking for a good hairdresser for YEARS! Ever since I moved to VA from Detroit. I had a hard time finding anyone to give me a good cut. All I wanted was a long bob with layers through the top and bangs. I went to Ulta for a quick bang trim out of desperation and really liked Ella, and my bangs were spectacular! I went back this past week to take a chance on ANOTHER stylist and get a full cut because I was AT LEAST six months overdue. Ella listened, asked questions, and then did exactly what I wanted. I've shopped at ulta before. Not the best customer service so I typically will go to Sephora just because I like there customer service better. There was ONE time a gentleman helped me and was so great and I loved my experience but recently I went to get foundation and this woman walked by me 5 times and didn't ask if I needed help than when I asked if I could have the help she didn't smile or talk to me just started walking to the area I had said I wanted to look at.... I said I'm Horrible at color matching and she didn't even try to help she picked up the sample foundation and handed it to me..... normally they have you sit down and put it on your face to see which color is best..... just wasn't interested in my asking of help at all..... The very last time I came to ulta really made me upset though!!!!!! My boyfriend decided to come and surprise me with a Naked Palette and a beauty blender..... came home and when I noticed it was $20 I said take it back that's insane for this small sponge when I can get a $3-$5 one from elf.... so he works a full time job and asked me to go take it back for him. I had my recite and everything. I go in and say "hi I'm here to return this and get my money back" she said "ok grabbed the recite and started doing stuff on her register not talking to me.... she finishes and hands me a gift card..... I said "oh, no I wanted to return this and get my cash back" she said well it was purchased on a debit card... I said Oh I wasn't aware, I can go grab the debit card from my boyfriend and bring it back or have him come do this. But I don't want a gift card I want the money back..... she said to me "well I already did it" I said I know but I didn't ask you to do that you could of asked me if I had to debit card to place the money back on or handed me cash... but you didn't you went along and just gave me a gift card that I didn't even ask for" So than she tries to fix it and says she can't.... she's goes to get her manager and she comes up and tells me she can't do anything about it because they already did the gift card... I said okay but I never asked for the gift card so I'm not accepting that, I had my recite and everything.... so she's rude and just ignores me completely... the other woman says I'll fix this.. and the manager goes "ya... if you even can this is ridiculous" I ignored her comment because I didn't come here to be insulted or difficult I literally had my recite and just needed something simple done but because they don't wanna loose money they just give you gift cards instead of YOUR cash back.... so after all this the girl fixes it in less than 2 minutes and gives me my cash back...... I said thank you so much I'm sorry about all this and I appreciate it. I went this past wknd and the other brands side had bare spots all over the place. Even a whole display part was missing for the brand name Essence. Someone is slacking on doing their job. They said her info had been put in the system but that no appointment had been made (even though I had called THREE times to make one).
