I saw that this salon had a lot of bad reviews years ago, but the more recent ones seem mixed. The old ones were correct. I go to the Ulta salon every few months for a trim. I hadn't been to this location before, but it was near where I work. I always ask for the same thing - cut an inch or two to take off the dead ends and trim up long layers that are already there. Instead. the stylist snipped maybe a quarter of an inch off the ends, so my hair still has that damaged, frizzy look at the end that asked to be cut. She also decided to cut the existing, minimal layering that I asked to be trimmed into one, very short layer for "volume". She cut a layer from the top of my head that hits my ears. The rest is mid-back. It will take months to grow out. I told her at the time that it was too short, but she insisted that it wasn't a cut, "only texture!" She was very nice, but seemed focused on keeping as much length at the end as possible, which was not a concern I had. I WAS concerned about too-short layers and explicitly stated that I did not want them because they thin out my already-thin, fine hair. I talked to customer service and they punted me back to the store manager. When I arrived, my appointment was delayed because one of the management team was holding an interview in front of the shampoo bowls. My stylist was the only one scheduled on her shift and was a transplant from another store. I don't know why they can't keep stylists here, but the general disorganization could be a factor. I don't trust this location to fix what should have been a very basic haircut. read more

Stopped in here on whim to grab some nail polish. The section is horribly anemic and unorganized. There are very few offerings - you'll see less selection, and even less stock overall. Very disappointing. Maybe for some skincare and make up, this location does well but if you're looking for nail care, I'd say go elsewhere. read more

I went into the Old Orchard location today on Skokie Blvd. I knew that I would need help because I was replacing all of my makeup from foundation to bronzer, concealer, eye shadow, liner, mascara and lipstick/liner. When I walked in, I spotted Teddie helping another customer. I decided to wait for her because her demeanor was incredibly kind. I'm so grateful I did. When I told her what I needed, she walked me through each item and color tested everything on me. I never know what shade to pick and she was so intuitive with what would match my skin tone and eye color perfectly. Her personality is so genuine and sweet. I felt like hugging her!! Do not and I mean Do not get your hair done here !!!! I'm warning you now I went in with highlights I left with dark brown ugly hair that turned orange. I literally cried and cried for 2 days because all my highlights were gone and Ulta stylist didn't care. I am emailing corporate to see if they can help me pay to get it fixed and am also working with the district manager of the salon department. Take your money and go to a colorist or a more reputable salon. I know it's more expensive but it's worth it. Had a really nice woman help me and my grandma with our hair and makeup selections. Even gave us a free sample.

This ulta location has very attentive staff. I was greeted as soon as i walked in the door even though the cashiers were keeping busy, they made sure to say hello. As i walked down the store Yazmin asked if there was anything i was looking for and she suggested a great product from Clinique. I'm very glad i visited this location. I like the products here but some of the staff members are a bit rude. I got a haircut once and the person cutting my hair was very nice but the cashier was very judgmental/rude for some reason. I don't know if this was just for me or if it was just the way I comprehended our conversation but it was just something I noticed. They are also very short-tempered when you ask them anything about their salon pricing. Customer service is incredible. Walked in just before close, and the staff were still the most friendly, helpful and enthusiastic people I have ever encountered at a beauty store. The manager took the time to check that I was doing ok even though she was trying to complete another task, and even gave me a kind of inside tip that the products I was looking at would go on sale soon. read more

Before I walked out I literally said "and this is exactly why I will always choose to go to Sephora." I placed a pickup order for an item with 2 gifts of purchase (in stock). I waited patiently in line and then asked for my pick up order. The first associate could not find it and requested assistance. I ordered this morning so was like oh maybe it hasn't been pulled. The new associate or manager then goes to get my order and comes back and says "actually we don't have nothing in stock from your order but you won't be charged." I went into the Skokie location this morning and was not even greeted. an employee with a disgusting attitude came up to me and said "what do you need help with." I hadn't even taken two steps through the door. I didn't need help as I went into the store knowing what i was going to buy. Skokie at Golf People are nice. Stylists are quality & listen to what you want. Downside, it's open to all people shopping around you nothing remotely private & freezing cold all year. Stylists must bring heaters. There is no one who can look up the days a stylist is in or know who is in that day. They can only transfer you "back there" but no one answers because they are busy with someone. If they would give minimum info you could decide best day & call back for a time. There are people walking back & forth who could answer the phone "back there." Same disregard when stylist won't be in. No one calls "We don't have someone to do that". Three times was there half hour before someone "Oh didn't someone call you, she won't be in"? Twice paid a Lyft. read more

Omg I can't stay away from Ulta! I have a problem... The employees are friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and know when to stay away. I come here often for my makeup goods, my nail polishes which include gel polish sets, hair products or simply to see what is new. I get a discount when I signed up for email which is good because I can also accumulate points to get free stuff. I especially love when they have their 21 days of Beauty. I can purchase items I've been wanting to try but don't want to spend much and get them half off. My recent purchases included Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes mascara, must try ladies; Mac Fix't spray, Anastasia Eyebrow Pencil and a Tarte blush set. I would've purchased more items but need storage space so I have to cut down. I will be back for more soon for more though. read more

Stopped in at the suggestion of a gal at the MAC counter at Nordstrom in Old Orchard. She said Ulta carried some MAC cosmetics. I was looking for my favorite eye shadow ("Blackberry") which none of the department stores seem to carry any longer. No MAC stand-alone store located near me. Karina Q was helping me - as was Sandy T. Early on a Friday morning and both young women were eager to help. They said my favorite color was discontinued. However, just as I was about to leave with nothing, Karina said she wanted to check the stock room just in case. Lo and behold she found one. I would have bought all she had if there were more. By the way - Nordstrom had TWO testers on the rack but claimed they were not getting any more in. I don't get it. Anyway, thank you Karina and Sandy - for helping me out. read more

I had the best experience yesterday evening at this location. I placed an online pickup order and accidentally thought it was ready for pickup when it wasn't. The gentleman that helped me (i forgot to grab his name but he is one of the managers i believe) still got the order ready for me right away. One of the products i bought was sold out in the size i ordered so he offered me the bigger size with a 20% off discount. I love this store. Good selection, helpful staff, a generous rewards program for their card holders, and they carry MAC! (Unlike the Village Crossing location!!) I love that the cashiers tell you at checkout when you have points to redeem. Very convenient, and I'm glad I don't have to keep track! I'm traveling soon and needed makeup as well as travel size toiletries. Today I came in and found not only a MAC promotion, but I redeemed a bunch of my points plus used a coupon I got in email, making my large purchase very inexpensive and me very happy!! read more

I've recently become obsessed with having my nails done. This is super odd to me since A) I'm not a girly girl whatsoever and B) I've never taken such an interest in nail care before. However, I discovered that having them done (despite the potentially high cost depending on how frequently I get them done) is a surefire way to prevent me from biting them. I decided to stop by Ulta to see if I could find some nail color to have my manicurist use on my nails the next time I visit her. Specifically, I was shopping for shades of green, blue and grey that would be appropriate for the warmer weather, but not too flashy since I work at a law firm & was going to be in Court for a big trial. Must look professional! First of, it took me FOREVER to find the professional nail polish section. It's located in the middle of the store. I didn't see any signs for it, which did not help matters. In terms of brands, they carry the usual suspects - OPI, Essie, China Glaze, Orly and Zoya. I ended up purchasing three bottles of Zoya, which was on sale - buy 2 bottles, get the third free. Each bottle cost $9, which was comparable to the other brands. I bought the polishes in Selene (true teal with a micronized metallic pearl finish), Zoya Bevin (dusty, medium sage green with teal tones and a creamy opaque finish) and Kelly (rich gray shade with soft purple and blue undertones). Credit to the website for the descriptions. Heaven's knows I can't describe color to save my life! I spent FOREVER browsing at all the brands and colors. It'd help if they had swatches with them like they do at the nail salon. But, eh. No big deal. Eventually an employee found me and I asked her for her recommendations based on what I had selected. She helped me narrow down my choices and I appreciated her feedback. Checkout was a breeze with a small wait due to people making more complicated transactions (returns, exchanges), but overall it went smoothly. The woman who rang me up was friendly and efficient. I highly doubt frequent returns to this area will happen though. First, I've got an Ulta at home, and I believe that Ulta is larger and has a bigger selection of everything. Second, I'm not in the Skokie area often. Though, I suppose I could see myself stopping by if I was at Old Orchard prior. And even then, I hardly shop at Old Orchard. Nevertheless, I was happy that I found nail polish for my manicurist to use. I got lots of compliments on the light green shade that I selected. Recently, I was clued into the knowledge that "beard care kits" were available. A Yelper suggested getting it at Ulta. Online I found a number of awesome beard kits but getting it local sounded the most convenient. (If beard kits sounds enticing, definitely Google it.) At this store, they didn't have much to offer. Simply one shampoo styled brand for some $18 dollars. (Many kits come with three bottles of conditioners and cleaner for about $20 - $25 dollars.) I was in the store for about twenty minutes. In that time, I walked to the back and slowly traveled from aisle to aisle trying to locate (herbal) bath products, beard kits and showering accessories. At no time in the first nineteen minutes did any employee stop to ask if I needed assistance or say hello. Many passed me heading in other directions and quickly. I picked up a couple items I wanted and began to grow weary looking for beard products. With arms full, moving towards the counter a lovely smile stopped and inquired as to whether they could assist me with anything. I asked about their beard products, which they hadn't had but one brand. For a cosmetics shop, it's adorned with that glowing white light that is reminiscent of a (fashion) runway and is completed with alluring fragrances drawing ones attention to other areas of the store. However, it's not terribly easy to find what's needed. Some areas are marked with aisle markers and one might assume that all "bath products" would be in the bath product aisles or shelves. This is wrong. There are then other areas which have similar products but from specific name brands. Which are showcased on the center aisles and setup in any order. read more

I seem to get good customer service when I come in. There are pleasant people that work here and there's a good selection of tools and makeup, hair care, etc. Just the other day, I came in looking for hot curlers that were on "sale" and couldn't find them on the shelf. I grabbed a different set and stood in line for check out. Once at the front of the line, I asked the cashier if it was it. He asked his manager who informed me that it wasn't and then she, the manager, proceeded to her stock room and searched for a few minutes until she found the item I came looking for. So, I got the sale item plus I got a discount for using my circular. They could of just told me that they're out of said hot rollers without ever looking (I wouldn't of thought to ask them to check) and I would have purchased the more expensive set. read more

When she moved to the Skokie location, I had to follow her, even though I now live in the western suburbs! She's always done an amazing job on my hair- people think my red hair is natural, and it lasts forever! However, after my shopping experience today and the utter lack of friendliness I received, I think it will be a very long time before I return. Had my hair cut by Heidi because the lady I was scheduled with called in sick. She was taking so long (1 hour for a trim) that I had to rush out to make a meeting. She told me that her usual rate was $55/cut but she would honor the other lady's rate. Not only that, but the entire time she was very rude about the fact that she had to come all the way in to work to do this cut; kind of rubbing it in my face. All I wanted was someone to trim my hair, and didn't really appreciate all of the attitude. Upon getting home and looking at my hair, the left side was truly half an inch longer than the left. Not only that, but there were about 3 tufts of hair that were about an inch longer than the rest. It looked like I'd let a 5 year old have at my hair. I went back to the salon and she cut and cut and tried to fix my hair. You could tell she was scoffing and ready to argue against about how bad my hair looked. She couldn't seem to get it right this time, either! She spent another 15 minutes working on it, and finally asked her coworker to come over and fix it for me. I will not be going back to this salon. On the other hand, everyone at the Clark & Wellington (downtown) location is outstanding! read more

This problem may be pervasive throughout the entire company. I tried for two hours to place an on line order curbside pickup without being able. The coupon code did not work and would not recognize my on line membership, even though the computers sent it to me. I called the customer service number, to comment on the poor website and they directed me to the store. I called the store, and the store in Skokie would not take curbside orders over the phone. It's COVID. I am a very senior citizen and don't want to go inside and shop and wait in a line. I would never shop there again. And certainly not recommend this place. I really love Ulta stores, but this one really doesn't excite me too much. Its a newly built store and the selection if probably one of the best I've seen. They have an amazing set-up and plenty of try-it-yourself make-up stations. BUT the customer service here sucks. Every single time I have been here, I have had a bad experience. I headed to this store to try and replace some much needed supplies. One stop shopping sounded good, I had too much to do to devote a great deal of time scurrying about for item replacements. I did, indeed, find some new products to try but was surprised that some favorite brands or products from those brands were not available. For example, I love Urban decay's skyscraper mascara. A different Urban decay mascara was offered, but not the one for which I was looking. I went to look for curling irons, the least expensive curling iron was $40.00. I do realize this is not the corner drug store, however, not everyone needs a salon grade iron. I initially purchased a higher priced item. Realizing that my cash was much better spent on other things, I returned it. The process was friendly, fast, and simple. I also tried a couple of new face products, a moisturizer and cleaner, Mario Badescu brand. These were at the recommendation of a gentleman working there, I never would have ventured to a new brand on my own. WOW! I LOVE them and will be back for more. They are better, for me, than my expensive trish products. The pricing is also fantastic! SCORE!! read more

They sold my daughter and I the wrong perfume size and quality.. the workers acted as I'd they didn't want to attend to us and even the manager didn't speak no one in the store spoke except Mrs Anna. And the older woman who rang us up. I really tried not to think it was because we were brown people unfortunately...iykyk..I believe Mrs Anna picked up on my body language because right then she came right over and assisted us as I was certainly ready to walk out. When we got to the perfume there was no assistance and you know all of the perfumes were locked away so we went to find Anna again.. the girls at the cash rep who ignored us the whole time acted as if they were angry that she'd come over to help and they even have her the wrong keys so that she couldn't help. The girl who did unlock it was rushing,and as we were checking out we saw her leaving out to lunch that explained the rush and why she didn't spend much time looking for the perfume that supposed to be in stock she didn't even come back over to us to tell u us she didn't find it Just rude! another associate checked a nearby store and we went there to get the other fragrance but they gave us toilet spray!!! We specifically stated we wanted parfume ! I will won't ever shop Ulta store 97 Again and I'm taking all my fragrance back ..terrible ass service! I signed up for a no chip manicure. I believe the woman who did my nails was Lori. The manicure was very sloppy and chipped the next day. Do not go to this location for nails. They have only one station for this and obviously no one qualified to perform the services. Update: The very next day after my manicure I got to Mexico for vacation. I spent a couple hours in the pool and all the polish just peeled off! I was so disappointed and left with bare nails for the rest of the trip! read more

I promised my mom I would write a review about the salon services here. The good: The ladies that work at the salon are very nice. The bad: Our appointment was at 10am and we didn't get started until around 10:15. We had arrived before the store opened so we were not the reason for the late start. The check in process took awhile as there was some confusion as to who was going to be taking care of us. In addition, my mom's hair stylist was more than 10 mins late. I opted for a blow dry and style. I think they call it the bombshell. Basically they give you nice waves with a curling iron. My mom also got a blow dry and style. Her hair is short while my hair is long. Right away you can tell the stylists we got were not that experienced in doing hair. They were rather slow and while my hair turned out fine, my mom's hair did not. I felt like my stylist could have done it a little faster considering she had a late start and I had informed her we had a makeup appointment at old orchard mall across the street. Instead of working faster she would stop every once and awhile and engage in conversation with the other stylist next to me. I would have been ok with it but we were really on a tight schedule and we already lost some time because it took so long for the lady to check us in combined with the fact my mom's stylist was late. I've had blowout and style before at other places and they generally take around 45 mins or less as opposed to the hour it took here. Now my mom's hair. I think the stylist could have admitted that she really does not know how to style short hair. By the time my mom was done her hair looked horrible. Really really bad. There wasn't anything redeeming about the style at all. It's something you just need to wash and redo. I couldn't stop laughing how bad it was. My mom said her stylist wouldn't let her see the progress of her work until the very end and by that time it was too late. Her hair was super high in the front and super poofy on all sides. I can't really describe it but it's like she gave my mom a big Afro. I would have taken a picture but I kept laughing so much. I know. I'm a bad daughter for laughing but it was just so hard to keep a straight face. Lol I felt bad for the stylist because my mom yelled at her and was causing a scene in the store. But I think the stylist could have also admitted the hair looked bad and not charge us for it because my mom really was unhappy. She was on edge because it was my brother's wedding and she wanted to look good. We also missed our 11:15 makeup appointment because our hair took so long. Overall, I think this salon is probably ok if you have long hair and want a simple blowout and style, but for short styles you might want to go to a salon with more experienced stylists. This is my local ulta, I'm also surprised it has little stars. I've never had a bad experience shopping here, the associates are very friendly and helpful. There's usually some really great sales and coupons as well. I went today to get my brows done at the benefit brow bar, there weren't any appointments available, but I was able to come back and do a walk in about 30 min later which was great. Homira was my 'beauty expert' and she did a great job. I hadn't had my brows done in a long while, they weren't awful but def needed some cleaning up. In addition to waxing, she also used tweezers and scissors to make the perfect shape-I asked to keep them full, she said "I know exactly what to do on you" and nailed it. Great arch, perfect lines, I've paid more then double at high end salons for brows that looked not even half as good. She then used a brow pencil- Benefit's Goof Proof Brow pencil and showed me how to fill in where needed and blend. At first I thought she was doing a thick Instagram beauty brow, and thought oh no, I'm going to look like a cheap Walmart version of Cara Delevingne but no! I was pleasantly surprised that a stronger defined brow-way softer then Cara, works perfectly for me. New brow look done! I also spoke with a beauty associate named Mandy, who was so sweet and helpful, we had a great conversation, the girl knows her stuff. I used to frequent Ulta a lot in the past but the past few visits have not been great. Every single time I go to buy something they ask for my number, I DO NOT give my number out, that's my preference, but they always insist that a number is needed to return an item, which I found is a lie. Today's visit I was told a phone number is required to return my item, even with a receipt, again, I said I don't have a beauty account and do not want to share my number, I had two associates behind the register basically tell me, no number no return, even with a receipt. So I gave them a fake number and told them it was fake just to get my return processed. Every single time I go in there they harass me for a phone number, they need to reevaluate their policy. read more

This review is for brow bar and the hair salon. I've gotten my eye brows done here for the first time a few months ago and I'm very happy. I tried one lady the first time and then the second time, I got Linda. I've been specifically coming for Linda now. She is super attentive and not at all rushed. I asked that she tweeze and not use any wax and she happily obliged. Thank you Linda! This week I got an itch to cut my hair. I've been cutting my hair with the same person for the last ten years but she was unavailable so I made an appointment at this location with the next available person. This happened to be Aviva. She did a great job. We took off four inches. I wasn't sure how much I wanted to cut exactly so she let me take off three and look it over and decide to do another inch. She was attentive, she listened to what I wanted even though I wasn't sure what I wanted. Overall I'm very happy with the experience and would do it all over again. Thank you Aviva! read more
