I went to ulta beauty today and while the store was well stocked I couldn't find anyone to help me. I was not approached by one store employee as I walked up and down the aisles obviously in need of help. I went to the register area and no one was there either! There is only one station on the non-prestige side where you can find tissues for wiping your hands after testing the makeup and it was empty and no hand sanitizer to be found. After checking out and returning home, I was on the ulta beauty app and I saw that there was a coupon that would've saved me $20 on my purchases. I tried calling to ask about it or if I can get an adjustment. I called a few times and finally reached someone who told me that it's not the cashiers responsibility to tell the customers about coupons. When I asked her, 'Even if it's going to save the customer money?' She put me on hold for 8 minutes then told me that if I came back the next day they'd honor the coupon. Why didn't the employee tell me about this while I was at the store? Because they don't care about their customers, in my opinion, if you're not Gen Z. read more

First let me tell you that this was a surprising salon experience. I got a last minute appointment with a hairdresser named Veronica. All I needed was a wash and blow-dry. I was so pleased they could squeeze me in due to it being prom week end. Veronica washed my hair well with the appropriate products. My hair is a mix of 4b and 4c with sparse density on top. Veronica was so gentle, no tugging, ripping out, or snagging occurred. She brush blow dried it which gave my hair some volume. The service quick and pain free. The end results were just as I desired. I had the stylist Nikki, she was so cool and sweet. I honestly felt so guilty since I had booked my appointment wrong. I asked for an emerald green shag and she still worked with me and we were both excited even nearly 6 hours in. I was nervous in the end because my hair didn't take to the color, I loved the color it did end up as but I wanted to ease into the lighter green so I redid it after a couple days of enjoying it. Not to say I didn't like the outcome we did have, but also we had to custom mix the color since they didn't have the emerald green in the salon for my hair just to not take it! I pretend this was the color we ended with when everyone at a wedding complimented my hair because she really does deserve all the credit, we were there past closing! We forgot to take before and after pictures but she was also able to even out and nearly remove a peekaboo dye I came in with. I am definitely going back to her and I absolutely recommend her just on personality alone but also I've never felt so confident in hair color and cut before my appointment with her read more

If you want to be completely ignored while you shop, this is the location for you!! Most retail workers would catch on that you have a confused look on your face and have visited the same area 5 times while your hands are still empty, and ask you if you need help. But nope, not these ladies. These ladies have a rare and special skill of being able to 100% tune out any customer traffic throughout the store. They even take it as far as to avoid all eye contact. As if bad customer service wasn't bad enough, almost every time I have visited this location, half of the products I needed were out of stock. Awesome. During my last visit, the ladies decided to not open the store until 10:30 due to "inventory", but failed to even post a sign stating the issue. I'm sorry, but that is completely unprofessional, and true management would have started the inventory at an earlier time. Annoyed, and with a baby, I decided to run a few other errands and returned 30 mins after the posted open time, only to walk into a store where I was completely ignored. Again. Like every other time. And the store smelled like a port-a-potty. If it weren't for my wonderful experiences shopping online and at other locations, I probably would have just stopped shopping at Ulta altogether, thanks to this location. I have religiously shopped at Ulta since before it was even known as just "Ulta". This location is only minutes from my home, but the customer service is so horrible, I go out of my way to visit other locations, or I order online and wait the three days to receive my items. Everything at this Ulta location takes FOREVER! I got my eyebrows done at the brow bar and it took nearly an hour. The lady took a long time setting up and really liked to talk. Apparently, she could not talk and do my brows at the same time. When she finally finished, I did take notice in the fantastic job she did. It also takes forever to check out here. I have never seen more than one cashier working at the front and there is always a line. The girls here also take a really long time to check each person out. Please note that the Vernon Hills location HAS MOVED ACROSS THE STREET - and is now located next to Dick's sporting goods! For some reason this location just urks me a bit. I'd have to say I prefer the Deer Park location (which always just seems brighter, cleaner and friendlier). The new store doesn't seem too much different than the old one. Maybe they just moved due to the parking debacle. There's much better parking at the new location. I was in here over Christmas and it was a disaster. There was crap all over the place, the line was all over the store, and the employees were maxed, and pretty much all checking out (seems nobody was around to help the shoppers). I don't come here all that often, as Sephora is my main "go-to" store - but I do come in here very now and then. I went to the salon to see Nicole and she was awesome. The first thing she did was sit down with me and talk about what I wanted and the issues I had then we did the haircut while she taught me hair care stuff. Unlike most other places she didn't recommend me any products but rather just told me how to use the ones I have different to get better results. Overall the best experience I have ever had at a salon. I would definitely recommend. And I have been to the store several time, it's not the most high end place but it's an ulta that gets the job done. The checkout line could be better become only one person was manning it and the store was filled with several employees. Excerpt from my other review: So I love the Gurnee store as I recently discovered it. It was absolute night and day to the Vernon Hills store I am used to. I will be shopping at Gurnee from now on. Gurnee was wonderfully organized, extremely clean and stocked with product and helpful staff! I have to say this store truly improved my opinions of ulta beauty. Vernon Hills is out of my fav products on a regular basis, and sadly I leave empty handed sometimes. Vernon Hills also doesn't create the warm enthusiastic environment that Gurnee did. Purchasing cruelty free is something extremely important to me, and when I vocalized this to an employee at Vernon Hills - she seemed to lose interest in helping me and walked away back to her Clinique counter. I feel like this location tries to constantly sell products to me that I'm not interested. If I mention that I want cruelty free- please don't walk me to the Lancôme or Benefit counters and try to sell me on their products. This locations testers are always way messy and not well kept. Not sanitary and prefer to not swatch things when they look so untidy. I think other people feel the same and unfortunately that means people test the actual products. This has happened a few times now where I've bought a product and when I get it home and open it - it's used. It happened with a troublemaker mascara I bought a few months ago. So I've been meaning to write a review of this place for some time now, so here it goes... I was there over a month ago and I will not be returning. I had been there before many times for a simple trim/undercut at the salon and mostly had good experiences- (sidebar: It should have been a red flag that the first time I was in there for a haircut, they messed up my hair and I thought, "It's not THAT bad, I can give them another chance" to which I later found out that the manager of the salon was the one who cut my hair all messed up. I definitely should have run out in the opposite direction, but you live and you learn, I guess.) A couple of awesome people there that kept me going back despite my apprehension was Randy and Arica. Once Randy changed his hours and Arica left, I should have parted ways, but instead, I chose to find another diamond in the rough. And I thought I did! I'm not going to name her name because she is very sweet and I do like her as a person- I just HATE how she did my hair. She did my undercut a few times and I felt like we were on the same page about a lot of things- hair/makeup/tattoos/etc- so I decided to do all-over color with her. THAT'S WHERE I WENT WRONG. I had told her I would eventually jump on board with the mermaid hair/pastel color trend that was going on and maybe do a lilac/lavender color. I also emphasized that I am really NOT into the whole grandma-chic thing that seems to be on trend for some ungodly reason. She told me whenever I was willing and able, she would do it for cheap- about $60 and up to start. So I finally came in one day to do it. 3 1/2 hours later I ended up with gray/blue/quasi lavender hair. IT WAS UGLY AF! She even talked to me about doing graphics in my hair and must have later abandoned the idea when she saw how fucked up it came out. She, of course, tried to down play it by saying "Oh, it's so cool! It's like a STEEL GRAY, WITH HINTS OF LAVENDER AND BLUE!" ........................ yeah, that's NOT what I asked for. She said what do you think?! Do you like the color and the cut? And I said, "yeahhhhh the CUT is nice...." IT WASN'T. To add insult to injury, on my way out, she handed me the paper to bring up to the register and they told me it was $120 for the color/cut. $120?!?!?! ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME?!?! I couldn't bare to start any shit over it so I paid for the service and even gave her a $15 tip- because I like her and I knew she spent a long time working on my hair. But the next day, I couldn't stand to look at myself in the mirror so I called Ulta and told them I felt I had been charged too much. I explained the story and they said the most they could do was to charge me $75 and have the manager fix my hair- recalling my previous experience- I decided to take a hard pass on that one- and I let the chick keep the tip because I felt bad for complaining. So I went in, got the refund and showed them my hair- stunned silence- they didn't even try to pretend it looked good. I was so embarrassed. So I went to Twisted Scissors in Chicago and they gave me the hair I was ORIGINALLY looking for! I highly recommend them! Monica is a saint- who put me through pain with more bleaching of my already bleached and tender head thanks to - she who will not be named- but ultimately gave me what I always wanted. Beauty is pain I guess! So almost $350 later, I finally got what I was looking for. HEED MY WARNING- DO NOT GO HERE. THAT IS ALL! read more

I try to avoid this location and go only when desperate. That was today. Crazy snowy day in April and they did not shovel or salt. Walkway was dangerous. Workers standing around avoiding customers. Last time I was there they were out of stock of 3 of 4 items I wanted. Went to Sephora across the street for a wonderful experience. Today I needed one item I was amazed they had it. There were 7 people waiting to check out. One cashier. Another finally showed up. Its always like that . If you have asthma or allergies beware. Walking in the store is overwhelming. Perfume scent is so strong. Another reason I try to avoid this store. I always get a headache and feel sick. This store needs new management and staff. I really struggle with Ulta and being a regular customer. Now, don't get me wrong, I love beauty products, I am a VIB Rogue at Sephora (meaning I spend entirely way too much money on beauty products), however Sephora does not carry everything I use. Hence I still find myself shopping Ulta from time to time. At this location I rarely find items I want in stock. I don't have time or patience to keep returning or checking other locations, so I find it frustrating that products are constantly out of stock. Routinely I only find about half of what I am looking for. This holiday I went while shopping for some gifts. The store was in complete disorganization. Example: items for nails were in no less than 4 completely different sections. I get cross shopping concepts and so forth, I worked in retail for years, however this clearly is just poor organization and presentation. I asked for help numerous times and each time my questions were met with clueless stares and having to ask someone else and still not getting an answer. The only person who was helpful and knowledgeable was a sweet girl in fragrance who could have been Elle Woods cousin from Legally Blonde, she knew her product and was very friendly. Overall, I find it harder and harder to return to their stores. Maybe I should switch to online exclusively but with beauty products that nearly defeats the purpose. Hopefully they can make some changes to their inventory and stock practices. Based on what I have read about their company's expansion plans I sure hope so, because with these practices and expansion on top of that it will likely just get worse. We shall see. read more

Pretty disappointed. I've been going to Ulta stores when they used to be called Ulta 3. Lately, I either shop at the Kildeer/Deer Park or this Vernon Hills store. Good Points : -It's a one stop shop for make up, toiletries, shampoo, hair accessories, perfume/cologne, etc. -Most of their staff are knowledgeable -They offer a reward program. So based on the money you've spent every quarter, you receive points which will allow you to purchase basic items. I usually get the Cotton Squares (which saves me about $4). Negative Points: -As a Rewards card member, you get coupons. The 20% Off ENTIRE coupon is what anyone would like to get ... BUT ... It does not include the major Make up companies. "Are you K-I-D-D-I-N-G me???!???!???! So this past week, I got 2 make up items ($25 each) & a cheap Ulta item for about $4. I go up to the cashier with my 20% Off ENTIRE coupon -- hoping to get about $11 off. But the cashier warns me that the 20% Off ENTIRE coupon does not include the two major named make up products. So I only saved under $1 with a $60 purchase. I did not want to vent at the cashier because she does not make the rules. But I want to say to the top executives of ULTA to change your coupon -- stop lying & insulting your customers. Because of this FALSE advertising scheme by ULTA, I will have to start shopping at SEPHORA. read more

My interaction with my cashier today was completely disappointing. She did not provide me with good customer service at all. First, I think she got into a bad transaction with another customer who was complaining about the advertised price of an item she bought. The sign was apparently for another item. The women felt duped. Anyway, I think the cashier I had dealt with this customer and perhaps that is why she treated me the way she did. I found my items fine and had a 20% coupon that I presented to her at checkout. I accidentally ripped my coupon, but did my best to tape it together. It was not scanning and she couldn't read the code so she had to use one that they had. She seemed rather annoyed to have to waste her time to do this. Then, on the screen, $1.50 was taken off and it seemed like it was taken off of the least expensive item out of my two. I asked her if it was off the more expensive item and she gave me attitude and told me, "No, it took it off the higher priced one. Would you like me to take it off the other?" And I go, "No." Sheseh. I just wanted clarification that it was taken off on the higher priced one since your screen did not show it that way. I felt super uncomfortable and just wanted to get out of there. Needless to say, I really doubt how much I will be coming back here after this incident. I can find better body butter elsewhere and buy my makeup brushes online. read more

An overview of Ulta: - They carry some high-end cosmetic, skin care, and hair care brands/appliances as well as basic drug store brands. - It has a rewards program, which is pretty good. - They have coupons and a lot of gifts/promotions. - They have a salon (which I have never used). I love the concept of Ulta. I am a Sephora girl because I can get almost every brand I love there, where at Ulta it's just a few of my faves. The great thing about Ulta though, is that with their rewards program you get actual free stuff. If you spend $300 per quarter, you get a certificate that will get you, among other things, a free bottle of perfume up to $45, or $45 toward what ever fragrance you may want. There are usually coupons or promotions posted on the website, and they have great sales on liter sized bottles of hair care quite frequently. Now here is the catch. Their customer service is beyond disgraceful. I shop at a few separate locations, with the VH and Kildeer locations being the ones I most frequent. I am very rarely greeted or spoken to pleasantly by store associates here whether the store is busy or whether it is completely empty. I manage a high-end retail store and not talking to my customers would not get me any sales, and would also cost me my job specifically for not talking to them. I have been asked if I need help hurriedly, followed around as if I were suspected of stealing, and ignored completely. Just in the last two weeks I have been looked at like I'm nuts for asking why there is no tester of a very popular Dior fragrance, denied a buy 1/get 1 50% off promotion when the store failed to take down the signs all over the store *four days* after said promotion ended, and discovered a one cent charge on my receipt for what I presume was a sample that was not included with my purchase. Oh, and ignored every time I've shopped. Before anyone says anything - yes, I do realize that they don't have to honor a promotion because they left a bunch of signs up. I don't like it when people ask me to honor something that is expired. If my store is at fault, I will. Staring blankly at customers would cost most people their jobs. At Ulta, it is a pre-requisite for employment. My best advice is to read reviews on any product you are thinking of buying on sites like makeupalley.com or Temptalia, because no one here can help you at all, nor do they care to. I called up and made an appointment with the benefit brow bar because I have used this service at a different Ulta and had a great experience. Well, long story short, it was one of the most unprofessional moments I have ever had as a customer. One of the employees was arguing with the woman who was working in me, while applying hot wax to my skin. "Were is that lipstick? Did you put it back somewhere different? Your really really need to keep this place clean. It's a mess. Now I have to look through eeeeeeverything..." It was very uncomfortable. She was distracted the whole time and no one was embarrassed or trying to keep things quiet in front of the customer at all. I believe the person who helped me was named Lauren, but she took the time to help me pick out the best products that were safe for me to use off of the list my dermatologist gave me. She was actually more helpful than my dermatologist because she recommended products on the list that best fit my skin type. But to my surprise there wasn't any improvement or softness to hair. In fact my hair became lot more frizzy. When I went to store to consult, their behavior was very rude and unreasonable. I love Ulta, but I avoid this particular location if at all possible. I feel like I NEVER get assistance at this location, for one. I think it's a general rule of thumb at a lot of Ultas that you probably won't get assistance unless you're browsing the pricier areas, but I don't even get assistance in that case at this store. I also agree with all the reviews that say it takes forever at this store. Checking out always takes forever, and the counter is set up in an odd spot so sometimes people aren't great at forming an orderly line, and hence, it's possible for people to cut from time to time. And I agree with the quality of some of the workers. The parking for this location is also awful. Don't even try going on the weekend. I've definitely been before where I've had to either park at Gordman's or way over by Best Buy. Lastly, I do see that another review mentions this, but there is one woman there with blonde hair, older than most of the rest of the staff who is probably the manager, but she is fabulous. I have visited many locations of Ulta in the Chicagoland area and the VH location always has a tendency to be out of stock on the very thing that is being shopped for...each and every time. That aside, the floor remodel that was done earlier in the year, has severely cramped the entire shopping experience. This coupled with all the end caps overflowing with products and the product staging in the very center of the aisles, is quite frustrating when attempting to move around the store, especially amongst other customers. Unlike other reviewers, I have not had any issues with customer service or associates not being attentive. Most often, the associates are available to assist with questions or to further confirm that they are out of stock of a particular item. Ulta has a lot of stock contained in their floor plan, which is great, however perhaps Corporate should really rethink the layout. Similar to dining, how attractive the layout/presentation, serves as an enticement to meander and perhaps purchase. Cosmetic stores must have a well thought out floorplan and proper product placement to allow the customer to have a comfortable, enjoyable and above all, "repeat" shopping experience. Update 10/25/17: Customer service has been on a steady decline and is now non-existent. Associates are mainly focused on standing around socializing with one another, rather than assisting customers. Nevertheless, when they do interact, there is zero value-add. I will stick to Sephora or simply order online. Visiting Ulta or any other brick and mortar beauty & cosmetics store is supposed to be a pleasurable, fun & relaxing experience, not angering or frustrating. read more

When I approached someone who happened to be in the same aisle/section as me to ask for help, I got such attitude back..how dare I ask for help right? Found an eyeshadow that did not have a tester out in the open and asked Alyshia if there was one available elsewhere. She very rudely replied, without making any eye contact, "all the testers are right there..". I proceeded to tell her that I had already checked that area and she finally walked over (after letting out a heavy sigh) and checked underneath each tester pot as if I had not already done that moments before. Needless to say, there was no tester and no apology or solution to the issue either. I felt brushed off..and that I was doing such a disservice to her. My jaw dropped..Such a frustrating experience! Unbelievable! Shopping for a gift for a wish child. Presented the Make a Wish tax exempt letter and was told, "We don't do that." by the manager on duty that the cashier called over to assist. I tried to explain to her that as a charitable organization, purchases made were not supposed to be charged tax. She spoke to me in a very condescending manner, mentioned something about her niece being with Make a Wish and said she could give me the number to customer service so they could tell me what to do. (I'd have to call the next day though as the store was closing soon) Again, there wasn't anything else for me to do besides present the tax letter and possibly my volunteer ID but she was clueless. The line was backing up and I could sense the other patrons patience running thin, as was mine, so I told her to just ring it up. As I was paying she mumbled, "I don't think you can do it anyways unless you are the company." I respectfully said, "I am purchasing on behalf of Make a Wish." It was very difficult to maintain my composure but I would never want to act poorly while representing MAW. Looks like ULTA needs to let their employees know what tax exempt means. I CANNOT go anywhere but Ulta in Vernon Hills. Randy is my stylist and BEYOND. Not only does he provide exceptional service, he gives me the best advice for haircare. It is always a pleasure to get my hair cut, colored/highlighted and receive care that is above and beyond! Randy is a hidden gem! I have tried many of the other salons out there, and REFUSE to go back. I am hooked on Randy's know-how and expertise, and I appreciate the value that Ulta offers!
