'Ulu is located inside the beautiful Four Seasons Resort. It is located right next to the beach with a gorgeous sunset view. During my last visit, we tried the Beach Tree Restaurant next door so we decided to try 'Ulu this time and boy am I glad we did. This is our last night on the Big Island and our favorite meal of our trip. The hostess led us to a large table right next to ocean. Our servers Doug and Braxton provided the best service ever. Doug is a sweet guy who grew in Southern Cal close to my residence, so we chatted for quite a while and had some good laughs. Braxton has the world's best smile and took the best group photos for us. They made our dining experience memorable. The food too were fantastic. I always try new restaurants hoping we'll get a surprise new experience and 'Ulu definitely delivered. 'Ulu has a pre-fixe menu and a few of us took advantage of the deal. The pre-fixe comes with a Kanpachi Crudo Salad, a Mango Curry Prawn Bowl, and finishes with a Mango Mille-Feuille. The Kanpanchi Crudo Salad was light and the fish was very fresh. My wife really enjoy this appetizer. I tried a little of her Mango Curry Prawn mean course and it was amazing. The Prawns are huge and perfectly cooked so it is not tough. The curry has a good balance so it is not too mild or strong. I never had this flavor before so I was delighted to try it. Doug informed me about a daily catch special with Red Snapper. I had a lot of fish in Hawaii and honestly I don't like most of them because they always comes out a bit dry. However, I know Red Snappers. That fish has the softest texture so I gave in. That dish did not disappoint. The pan fried side of the fish is crispy while the soft delicate inside just melts in your mouth. I like steam Red Snappers for its soft texture and I was very surprised that this pan fried version can offer the same softness inside. Our friend ordered the New York strip. The steak itself can benefit from more marbling but it was not bad. The Miso sauce adds a very rich salty flavor that you don't usually get from a steak dish. My daughter had a crab meat udon and she loved it. She is a fiend for anything noodle. There were crab flavors in every bite and the crab meat portions are generous. At the end, Doug hooked us up with a Vanilla Soufflé dessert to help celebrate our anniversary. The Soufflé was one of the best I ever had. Every item we tried was good and the view from our table was amazing. This was one of my top 5 best dining experience ever. I understand that most people want to book Beach Tree because of the view, but I am telling you don't sleep on 'Ulu. If I return to Big Island next time, I will book 'Ulu again in a heart beat. read more

The service here really made the overall experience disappointing. Once our food was brought to the table, not a single staff member checked on us to see how everything was or ask if we needed anything. Our drinks sat empty for quite a while, and getting a refill took much longer than it should have. The service issues actually started while we were placing our order. Our server repeatedly walked away in the middle of us speaking to attend to other tables, leaving us waiting several times before we could even finish ordering. It made us feel like we were an inconvenience rather than valued customers. As for the food, it was just mediocre and didn't come close to justifying the price. We've eaten at plenty of restaurants throughout Hawaii, and we've had far better meals for much less. For a restaurant charging premium prices, we expected attentive service and a dining experience that matched the cost. Unfortunately, neither the food nor the service lived up to our expectations. Based on this experience, we're not sure we'll be coming back. I was able to talk to the hosts and they ended up grabbing a manager who was very sweet and apologetic. read more

The ambiance is near perfection as it faces west for perfect sunsets. The service was exceptional and very helpful. We loved Angie our waitress, who took great care of us and our amazing experience. The fresh seafood and sushi here are the highest quality we ever tasted. The New York steak was cooked to perfection and it was a high quality prime cut. The ahi tuna steak was seared perfectly and seasoned very well. We loved their innovative and unique desserts. The lava crunch cake was mouthy watering and a dream for any chocolate lover. Ahi poke (6/10)-bland not a lot of flavor but good amount of fish Mahi mahi (7/10)-average fish like how it was light and good portion Cake (8/10)-light and not too rich the ice cream was a huge plus. The atmosphere at Ulu is incredible!!! I don't think it gets better than this location. Highly recommend reservations, especially if you want a table with clear view of the water or sunset. Service was amazing as well. We tried the crispy chicken, crab fried rice, crab noodles, and the chocolate soufflé. The chicken app wasn't anything spectacular, noodles were perfectly chewy and generous with the crab, and fried rice was great. The soufflé was the highlight! We went with chocolate but they have a seasonal rotating fruit flavor as well. This takes 25 minutes to make so recommend ordering it early if you know you want to try it. Having had some disappointing - and very expensive - meals at Big Island resorts where the view was better than the food, we had our expectations in check when deciding to celebrating a special occasion at the Four Seasons. What a surprise. From the moment we tasted the Hualalai oysters - our server, Doug, explained in detail the incredible two year process of raising them - we were stunned. These were the best oysters I have ever had: fresh, plump, full of briny seawater. We took a gamble on the tableside poke (opting for the Kona konpachi) which seemed crazy given the quality of poke available at supermarkets around the island, but were pleasantly surprised again. The crab noodles with ebi butter, king crab, and bok choi had a wonderful mochi texture, and the broiled 1/2 Kona lobster (with a sriracha hollandaise) and fries were perfect. The only miss for us was the grilled daily catch, which was a dry, severe tasting konpachi. The yuzu kosho butter sauce made up for it a bit but only masked how tough the fish was. Obviously the restaurant is beautiful. The location and views are sublime and service is as you would expect at the Four Seasons. If you've been burned before at fancy resort restaurants on the islands, I highly recommend trying 'Ulu. read more

Ulu is at the Four Seasons Resort. They have free self-parking and free valet parking. The restaurant is ocean-side and has both outdoor and indoor seating. It has amazing views. It wasn't very busy when we were there. The presentation was perfect. My wife had the Hudson Valley Foie Gras and wasn't impressed. She ordered the Kanpachi which came with a pineapple sambal, crispy garlic, and lemon-soy vinaigrette. It was the highlight of the evening's food for me. She had an amazing crab leg as well. I had Crab Noodles with King Crab, mochi noodles, sweet ebi butter and bok choi. It was solid, but not exceptional. For dessert, we had the chocolate souffle which was very good. They gave my wife a complimentary dessert for her birthday! Our main let-down was our server. She seemed to always be in a hurry, and impatient when we took too long to order. We had an amazing evening at Ulu at the Four Seasons Kona while celebrating my friend's birthday. The staff went above and beyond to make the surprise truly special. While my friend and I were walking on the beach, our wives checked in for our reservation and weren't sure how to call us over without giving it away. One of the team members actually offered to help and played along perfectly. She walked over and calmly told my friend that his wife had fallen but was okay and wanted him to come quickly. He rushed back, only to be met with laughter and the surprise reveal at the table. Her acting was so convincing, and I couldn't believe she went along with the plan. It really showed how thoughtful and fun the staff is here. On to the food and drinks. Everything was excellent. The cocktails were top quality, balanced, and smooth (no next-day headaches). We ordered the tableside poke, which was some of the best we had on the island. It was fun being able to choose how much of each ingredient we wanted. My wife and I also shared the Tuna Wellington special, which was great. the flaky crust, perfectly cooked tuna, and the foie gras all came together beautifully. For dessert, we were completely surprised. Instead of just a small birthday treat like ice cream, they surprised us with two big soufflés--one for my friend's birthday and another for me, since my birthday was coming up later in the month. Such a thoughtful and generous touch! Between the incredible food, attentive staff, and the beachfront sunset views, Ulu is a gem. Where are half stars when you need them? I had dinner here during my stay on the Big Island. I really want to give this place 4 stars but for the price I just couldn't. The food is good but nothing amazing. From memory I had the ahi roll. Wok fried beef steak (similar to Vietnamese style Bo luc lac but crispy beef), wife had the ny strip (pretty average and small) and the dessert was the highlight... the chocolate fondue. We also had crab fried rice and crab noodles. Not sure if it was the weather, seasoning or perhaps use of msg. About 1/2 way thru my meal I was guzzling water at an insane rate. Our server Michael not only replaced flatware between courses but he also wiped off the placemats and cleaned all the bread crumbs. When we ordered he discussed with us the timing we would like for the courses. (Did we want the salad and poke together, etc.). The drinks were perfect. The view as you can see is phenomenal. It is so comfortable sitting under the shelter and having the view. The setup keeps it from getting cold or windy and there were no insects to bother us. The table side poke was delicious. The beet salad was lovely and unique. We loved the ahi au poivre and the broiled lobster. If you have not had crab or lobster with Hollandaise, you have not lived. Also, the lobster had tiny pieces of onion and tomato and it was cut up and freed from the shell so it was easy for me to eat, The grilled lemon was only too happy to give its juices to my plate. This restaurant does have it all - delicious food, great service and then possibly the best ambiance of any restaurant I've been to yet. This restaurant sits right on the beach, and a few days prior we were able to grab reservations around sunset which was *chefs kiss*. This restaurant is at the Four Seasons, so parking isn't straight forward and you have to come through a gate to get onto property. We told the gate agent we had reservations and he let us in no worries, and then we just followed signs for some public parking. The restaurant was then about a 10 minute walk from the lot. If you can arrive early and walk along the beach path, I highly recommend as the views and beach are beautiful. This was our last meal of our vacation and on our anniversary so it was a wonderful way to end our trip. The servers were all so helpful and attentive and they gave us a lovely booth table where we were both faced outwards to see the ocean. We started the meal with the smoked pork belly bao and this may have been my favorite item of the evening. The pork belly was so flavorful and the bao was super fluffy. I had the grilled fish catch of the day and my husband had the puna chicken. Both were cooked deliciously. If I had to critique one thing about this restaurant, its that I felt the entrees weren't super unique, although they still were cooked perfectly. We also ordered one of their dessert specials of the night and it was divine. They also surprised us with a Happy Anniversary chocolate on top. This is a pricey spot, so the ambiance comes with a price tag but I do think it is worth it for the experience, especially for a special occasion meal. read more

Had a lovely, albeit pricy, dinner for my daughter's b-day. We shared a roll, my daughter had the crab legs, my wife the tuna and I had the catch of the day. The roll was excellent, I liked my entree, my daughter loved the crab legs, but the tuna wasn't really what my wife or I expected. It was seared raw, with almost no penetration beyond the crust. Usually that's not a problem, we eat tons of sushi and poke, but this tuna steak just didn't work with this prep. It wasn't bad, but I would have expected better. It was redeemed with the souffles, which were excellent, and the cocktails were good. The room itself is lovely, and it was nice that there is a self parking area by the front that is free, so I didn't have to pay an extra just to park. the best parts of this restaurant were the views of the ocean, waves, and sunset if you are here for dinner. we got the: 1. hokkaido scallops crudo ($25): very fresh and melt-in-your-mouth 2. ahi tuna wellington ($135): this came with a live carving and explanation of how the dish came about. it tasted amazing and the tuna was so tender. unfortunately, our lua leaf (taro leaf) was a tad undercooked, causing our throats to itch and hurt for the rest of the night. the staff were really nice about it though, sending an EMT to take a look at us, and also waiving the cost of this dish as we couldn't have any more. 3. grand garnier souffle ($24): beautiful fluffy texture, well balanced flavors with the orange liqueur! it was unfortunate we couldn't enjoy the ahi tuna wellington, but overall we were happy with the taste of all the food and service. read more

We had a great dinner Ulu. We had wonderful service throughout from Justine and team who made great recommendations. We ended up getting the following: California Crab Roll: better than most because they use real crab Cut greens salad: this was great, excellent ingredients, and the dressing was t overwhelming Grilled fresh catch: we got two versions and both the mahi mahi and kanpachi were great. The sides were also unique, I'm still not entirely sure what we had, but it was delicious and fun to have something different. Dessert was really the only miss: the soufflé wasn't super flavorful, and got pretty wet with the side sauce, and the roasted pineapple parfait just wasn't that good. The current offering is Sushi and Robata by 'Ulu, setup outside around the beautiful King's Pond. We loved 'Ulu when we dined there two years ago. We booked a reservation this year anyway, knowing about the setting change and modified menu of sushi and robata. Long story short: food was fresh and delicious, and service was great (servers must have been working extra hard to get food to/around this modified space so smoothly). We really enjoyed our dinner! For anyone who has been to 'Ulu just note: the experience is a little less elevated but still worth a visit. The setting is still very pretty but our table was tucked down a few steps, blocking a sunset/ocean view. And all drinks were served in plastic...pretty plastic stemmed wine 'glasses' but still plastic, to protect the fish of Kings Pond. I get it. I just recommend a cocktail over wine, now knowing that. What we ordered: MAKI SUSHI (rolls) -NEGIHAMA - Hamachi, Green Onion, Puffed Rice Furikake -LOCAL BIGEYE AHI TUNA TEKKA MAKI - Fresh Wasabi, House Made Soy Sauce, Chives -VEGETABLE ROLL - Baby Romaine, Shiso, Ume ROBATA (mini hibachi grill brought to your table - very cool presentation!) -HOKKAIDO SCALLOP - Miso Sauce Fresh fish. Our snapper was so wonderful I'm not even exaggerating when I say it brought a tear to my eye (that and the mist of ocean water in the air). This was among our favorite experiences on the island. The flavors are balanced, and the wine list pairs very well (and ad lib sommelier service if you're not sure what to get). In the mornings, 'Ulu serves as a bustling breakfast spot dedicated to guests at the Four Seasons Hualalai. By night, it transforms into a romantic dining destination that lives up to everything you've been dreaming about since you planned your trip to Hawaii. To ensure the kitchen can better prepare for dinner, lunch isn't offered from 11 AM - 5:30 PM. Breakfast: Breakfast is available a la carte or as an all you can eat buffet. During my six day stay at the Four Seasons, I tried the buffet ($55), the Hawaiian Breakfast ($58), and the American Breakfast. Out of the three, I suggest either the Hawaiian or American Breakfast, depending on what you're going for. The Hawaiian Breakfast comes with two Spam Musubis, a mini Açaí Bowl, Malasadas (think lightly sugared fluffy donut holes), a Loco Moco slider and local fruit. The Spam Musubis were so good, I couldn't resist ordering some to go! For those looking for something more traditional, the American Breakfast comes with the works: two eggs of your choice, toast, protein, and either pancakes or a waffle. I fell in love with all things "MacNut" in Hawaii and made a special request for MacNut pancakes and... wow. I was honestly speechless by their service to accommodate and deliver such an incredible meal. Dinner: Dinner is even more exceptional, but fair warning-- it'll cost you. I had dined at both Noio (upstairs) and 'Ulu (downstairs) in search of the freshest and most flavorful seafood that embodies Hawaii, and without a question, Ulu came out on top. The menu offers tableside Poke, an abundance of fresh fish and shellfish, including crudo and seafood towers, caviar, and more. Despite being a party of one, I couldn't help but be drawn to the Chilled Queens Platter... which is meant for 2-4 people. If you're wondering if I finished it... I was close! The only thing I couldn't quite manage was the poke, which was understandable given the party size. The service was Four Seasons level but the food was less than par - which makes a dinner for 4 at just over $500 disappointing. We ordered several dishes and are "family style" so we could all share and enjoy the different dishes. The polo made table side was good - but we could get similar quality at Umekes in town! The drag fish was fishy, the crab noodles also tasted fishy, the New York steak ordered medium rare was also disappointing. I guess the best was their pork in a bun (Chinese style) was our favorite. The chocolate soufflé dessert was also dry - probably needed vanilla ice cream to moisten it up! Overall, we don't think we'll be going back there. read more

Currently the restaurant is being remodeled. We sat alongside Kings Pond at the Four Seasons. Our table was in the sand. Cool concept. However, I do not recommend bringing younger kids. Mine just wanted to play with the sand. The food was fresh. I enjoyed my sashimi and maki roll. It was good but not my favorite dish. When we checked in, she said we didn't have reservations . There was a whole mix up with their system and concierge.... She gave the vibe that she wasn't going to seat us. I explained we made reservations way in advance and had 3 confirmations from hotel in our itinerary. I know it's not her fault but she wouldn't seat us until she figured out who messed up. Wow! I had read this place was spectacular but to experience the spectacular was just WOW! I made a reservation about a week prior. There was only an 8:30pm spot but I checked back a few days before and changed to 7:30 and then changed again to 6pm. 6pm was a perfect time to book as it allowed my kiddo and I time to watch the sun set which was just so spectacular! We arrived to the Four Seasons after a Dolphin experience up north. We valet the car and went into the lobby and a nice man greeted us. We asked for the bathroom and proceeded to change from our swim suits into nice clothes and then relaxed in the lobby for a bit before heading down to the beach. The hotel property is just amazingly beautiful! We took a ton of photos while waiting to check-in. A little before 6 we checked in with the hostess and were seated at a wonderful table. Our server was the absolute nicest lady who knew we were excited to eat there and she was just so accomodating. She took photos and took us through things people enjoyed. Helped us order drinks. She was the best! They bring out wonderful bread and butter. And then we ordered Japanese blue fin poke. A man came with the most beautiful bowls of mix ins and made our poke tableside. We ate that mouthwatering poke with taro chips and just gobbled it right up! It was so tasty. Then we had an amazing sushi roll!! For dinner we had the mahi mahi and omg the best Spicy Crab Noodles of my life!!! That dish like the poke and sushi roll was perfection! Sadly we were too full to get dessert. My wife and I have eaten here 5+ times for both breakfast and dinner during our current stay at Four Seasons Hualalai. It really is fantastic. The breakfast is a casual resort breakfast with a great breakfast buffet as well as a full menu to order off of if you aren't feeling like doing the buffet. The buffet rotates several items daily so it doesn't get boring if you are eating here multiple days in a row. The ambiance is about as nice as you could possible imagine. The restaurant is mostly outdoors and is about 20 feet from the ocean so you really can't beat that. The dinner was also fantastic. The menu is very seafood heavy so if you're not a fan of seafood, I would consider eating elsewhere but my wife and I love seafood so we really enjoyed it. We had a reservation for Ulu and were told that they were fully committed even though we had a reservation. We had cancelled another reservation for this restaurant. Also, we ate here two nights ago and were going mainly for sunset photos. Avoid their "special holiday" fried fish - it is $250 a serving and tastes VERY fishy. The piña colada was very good though. The manager was not helpful at all. No one contacted us to tell us they decided to only serve hotel guests. POOR, POOR customer service. So, this review is based on a single visit,tasting a single dish but I can say with confidence that it may well be the best Loco Moco in the world. It's a great restaurant, super friendly staff, tucked into the four seasons on the beach. Get up early, avoid the spoiled children and stuffy misplaced parents, skip the buffet and order loco moco .
