We arrived to a pretty long line, which just goes to show how popular this place is, and for good reason. From the moment we got to the front, the owners were incredibly kind and sweet, making the wait completely worth it. You have the option to choose one of their delicious combinations or create your own with three flavors. I went with lychee, passion fruit, and mango, and it was absolutely divine and so refreshing. Ululani's holds a special place in my heart because my first experience with their shave ice was at their Maui location. I used to live in Hawai'i and would go to the North Shore to Matsumoto's, so right when they first opened I read up about them. I have to say if using ultra purified water and state of the art machines is their secret, it works! I've never had shave ice so soft and fluffy. They offer a good selection of flavors and they are great and you're able to add azuki beans and or Lappert's ice cream (from Hawai'i) to the bottom! And yes they offer Li Hing Mui powder! I will say the only drawback is once you get all the bells and whistles it does get a bit pricey! read more

Heard a lot about Ululani's so was really excited when I heard they were coming to San Diego. Went on a weekday around 1 PM and there was a line out the door. Line moved slow but it was understandable since they haven't been open very long. The staff made sure there were plenty of small menus so you could figure out what you wanted while you waited in line. One of the staff was also nice enough to go through the line with samples of some of their flavors! Even though the line moved slow it was well worth the wait! The menu was very informative and walked you through step by step on how to order. I ordered one of their more popular flavor combos called the No Ka Oi (Mango, Coconut and Passionfruit). I topped mine with the snow cap (condensed milk mixture) and mochi. The snow texture was light and held onto the syrup perfectly. The syrup was full of flavor and not too sweet! I had a scoop of the coconut ice cream at the bottom which was a nice reward once working my way down. One of my favorite parts was the fresh mochi! The texture was soft and chewy. We wish we had a whole bowl to snack on! The location had plenty of seating and was clean. We visited an hour after opening and there was a decent line (@ ~12:15PM). We liked how the owners/managers came out and handed us small menus so we can decide what to try as well as offered us water bottles! We got in after an hour wait. We also got word from a friend who works here that the blades on the ice machine were dull so the wait was longer than anticipated! This place just opened and the employees are still training so we understood and empathized with this situation. When it was our turn to order, our cashier was very attentive and understood the Tagalog my grandma was speaking when she was ordering. We ordered 1 regular size, 1 kids size, and 2 ice creams by itself with two flavors. ** for the two flavors of ice cream we expected it to come in the same cup, however they served each flavor in individual cups and charged us for each cup (we paid for 4 cups of ice cream when we only wanted 2 but with 2 flavors each). I think it was just miscommunication, however I would like to see an option where we can pick two flavors without having to pay for the individual cups. We waited for our shaved ice to be made. It took around 15 mins after ordering however again these employees are training and perfecting the standards the business wants them to have! So totally understandable! Customer service was definitely a highlight! The shaved ice we received looked absolutely amazing! I got a pineapple, lychee, and tigers blood with snow cap and vanilla ice cream. Ululani's just opened in San Diego and you can tell everyone is excited! We so desperately need a place like this in SD.. I just wish they were closer to the beach/Point Loma. They would KILL it here! Obviously, the lines were long because they just opened. They had a ton of team members staffed, it really felt like all hands on deck. That being said, we waited about an hour to order and then another 10(ish) minutes to get out order - we were with a ton of friends and EVERYONE ordered something different and LOVED it. It would've been even better with some Hawaiian-style music to match the atmosphere. The shaved ice was excellent -- soft, finely shaved ice with flavorful syrup that didn't melt too quickly, unlike some other places. The only downside was the slow process from ordering to receiving our shave ice. A bit more efficiency would really enhance the overall experience. The concept should be that when you go from left to right to order , by the time you reach the end of the counter on the right side your order should be ready. It took a while to get our order. I've had Ululani's in Hawaii before and my experience here was really off. We waited 1.5 hours on a Saturday evening with lines out the door. By the time we made it into the store, we saw that their machine broke. They eventually fixed one of their machines phewww. We repeated our order 4 times before the staff finally got it right on the ordering system. When my boyfriend's order came, we told them that one of the syrups was wrong and they insisted that it was right. He got all 3 sugar free flavors: coconut, leche, and tigers blood. His order had blue in it and we were pretty sure that they messed up on the leche flavor. We've had those flavors in Hawaii before and there was never any blue color to it. We also noticed that his order barely had any syrup, it was colorless 1/3 through. We threw out the remaining half of it since it was like eating plain ice without the syrup. It was a disappointing experience, especially when we told them that one of the syrups was wrong.. instead of fixing it, the staff insisted that it was right. A little birdie told me Ululani's was finally open! I made it down here as soon as I could to try out my favorite Hawaiian shaved ice spot! I'm not lying, you know how death row inmates get to choose their last meal? No steak dinner for me... All I want is my Ululani's Hawaiian shaved ice!!! There's no other place who comes close! I ordered my favorite combination called the "Haleakala" which is lychee & coconut with a snow cap (a sweetened condensed milk mixture) on top. I added their Bourbon flavored vanilla bean ice cream to it as well. I'm not a fan of getting my lips and tongue stained with the colored flavoring afterwards. I met some of the owners, Vince & his wife MJ. The location has a few Ululani's staff here visiting from Hawaii to help prepare their new location for their Grand Opening, Saturday 5/31. They're already up and running making their delicious cold creations! Mine tasted just like I remembered during my last visit to Maui. The seating area was clean, comfortable, and inviting. First of all if your going to try out the shaved ice be prepared to wait for 2.5 hrs as the line is always out the door. We spoke to the owner and she is super friendly and handing out umbrellas to shade the customers as the city did not permit any canopies. The service and people are super friendly and there is some great merchandise I recommend looking at before you finish getting out of line. The ambiance looks very similar to the one in Hawaii down to the colors. After the long awaited time received our order and it is very similar to the Hawaiian style. Looks great, but the wait is way too long. We got here at 2:45, they opened at 3 and we were in line right outside of little Cesar's. We waited until 4:15- an hour and fifteen minutes and we haven't even ordered. We got into the front door around 3:45 and watched customers ordering and then it's another 10-15 minutes until they call your name that your order is ready. They had five employees working who were pleasant and kind but the line just barely moved. I started timing customers as they went up to order ... it was about 5-6 minutes for a customer to order before the next customer goes up to order. At 4:15 we left and decided to go somewhere else. The shaved ice was unbelievably fluffy, and the flavors--passion orange, mango, and guava--were delicious and super refreshing. We added ube ice cream, which they layer at the bottom (genius!), then pile on the fluffy shaved ice, top it with syrup, and finish it off with house-made mochi. Came in on a Sunday night 15 minutes before close. Ordered "the best" which was quite good but, it was not flavored all the way through. There were about 3 bites of flavor then the rest was all shaved ice. I tried to go back in and see if I could get it remade but the worker locked the door on me and wouldn't talk to me.
