For me, it was kind of hard to decipher the menu, but I'm old and not with the end crowd so who knows that could be just me. It was easy to order with the help of the cashier who is nice and patient. Just like Hawaii super fluffy and soft shaved ice that came with the flavors that were a variety of tropical and sweet. Overall, it is a 4.5 and I would say worth the trip if you were craving shaved ice or shaved snow this is really a spot to go to in San Diego. They only have about four locations on the West Coast and I would say the price is fair. Again the texture is the reason to go and I would say the store is clean and nicely decorated, but the floor is very sticky. Really yummy shave ice from Hawaii to make your day a lot cooler! We indulged in the blue Hawaii and lemon syrup and the matcha flavor. The only ehh thing that I have about this place is that the portions are very small and the syrup sometimes doesn't reach the other ice meaning that you're eating just ice. I visited Ululani's at noon on a Thursday and there was no line.  Helpful owner told me about the options. I ordered a large Sunset Beach shave ice.  Ice was incredibly fluffy and soaked up the syrup so it didn't drain to the bottom.  Flavors were passion orange, mango, and guava.  It was fruity and delicious.  My favorite shave ice in town. 2nd visit I tried the Citrus Squeeze which consisted of lime, pink lemonade, and lemon.  Once again I was impressed by how fine and fluffy the ice was.  Lime was a blast of sour lime flavor.  Pink lemonade tasted just like a pink lemonade, and lemon was a mix of sweetness with lots of sour lemon flavor.  Great flavor combination. I discovered you can buy pints of Lappert's Hawaiian ice cream.  I bought 2 pints for $11 each. Kauai Pie consisted of rich creamy kona coffee ice cream with Hawaiian macadamia nuts, shredded and toasted coconut and dark chocolate fudge.  This ice cream was thick, rich and decadent. Vanilla bean was rich and creamy with a bold vanilla bean flavor.  One of my favorite vanilla ice creams. Yeeessss. Absolutely. And honestly? I did the same thing several more times. I'm born and raised in Hawaiʻi. This is what shave ice is suppose to be. The ice is soft and fluffy, the flavors are spot-on (made in house, purified water, natural fruit puree/juice) and it truly tastes like home. This location offers all the classic Hawaiʻi favorite flavors and, on a recent visit, they've added some mainland flavors as well. My favorite topping is the dry mochi--this is the only shave ice place in San Diego that I've been to that offers mochi like this, and it makes all the difference for me. Super soft and fluffy Hawaiian shaved ice!! I ordered the sunset beach flavor (passion orange, mango, and guava) with macadamia nut ice cream and house made mochi. This place is so special to me, I always go to the Ululani's locations when I visit Maui and it was so exciting for me to come in Chula Vista!! It felt like I was transported right back to the Hawaiian Islands. The shave ice flavors are SO good, especially the passion fruit, this was the winning flavor for me. The actual texture of the ice is so fine, it felt like a soft cloud. The macadamia ice cream is so good, it has real chunks of Mac nuts in it. It's definitely a must-add to your shave ice. Ululani's Shave Ice has their original locations in Maui and their shave ice is known as some of the best of the islands. I'm so happy that we can have it here. There is one location closer to me in Hollywood; however, this location in Chula Vista, San Diego is more accessible to me when I visit family in the area. I got their "Sunset Beach", which features their shave ice with Passion fruit, Mango, and Guava syrups, which are house made with real fruit and cane sugars. You absolutely need to get one of their shave ice with their "snow cap" of condensed milk. If you want to splurge, you could add ice cream. They use ice cream from Lappert's in Honolulu. I got their Mac Nut ice cream; however, they also have Vanilla and Coconut. The shave ice is smooth, the condensed milk makes the dessert creamy, and the syrups have concentrated flavors that don't feel artificial. It's why this is a top choice in the Hawaiian Islands. Overall, I'm glad that we can have it here in Southern California. The only con is that this spot can get quite busy and there is limited seating inside; however, there's nothing better on a hot day. read more

Also, these are hand made treats so be patient with the employees, they're all working hard for ya! There are several seats in there and the place is brightly lit & clean. We went for the "keiki" size which is kids [$7.25] but it was almost as big as the adults- definitely shareable. That's the first step, then you pick ice cream or azuki beans, your flavors and finally toppings (optional). Our total came out to be around $10-12 with everything we got which is not bad at all. Finally got to try Ululani's and timed it perfectly. We've attempted to go a couple of times but the line is so far back that it would've taken 1.5-2 hours. I ordered the small Haleakala which had lychee syrup, coconut syrup, and condensed milk drizzled on top. I then added ube syrup to really make the coconut syrup pop. My husband ordered the small root beer float shave ice which had root beer and vanilla syrups, condensed milk, AND he added a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The shave ice was good, cost $19 for two smalls after adding condensed milk and ice cream. Rather steep but the attention, time, and care they take into molding each bowl shows how much they value their product. The service was sub, not the friendliest, but not outright rude either. There was a long line when we got there, and we ended up waiting about an hour. While waiting, I watched the workers, and honestly, they were moving so slow, especially with such a long line. Two of the guys pouring syrup didn't seem like they could multitask.. every time they stopped to chat with each other, the work completely stopped, too. You'd think with that many people waiting, they would move faster. Another thing that bothered me was the glove use. The girl packing the shaved ice should've changed gloves after coming back from pouring syrup, especially since the syrup guys weren't wearing gloves at all. It just didn't feel very sanitary but she was the only one who was actually moving pretty quickly to get orders out. After all that waiting, we finally got our shaved ice. The texture of the ice was soft and nice, but the flavors were just okay. Maybe other flavors is better? I ordered the Sunset (orange mango, guava, and another flavor I can't remember), and it wasn't really worth the hour wait. I expected it to be creamier and more flavorful. Give me a CHEE HOO! Ululani's has hit my city! The family absolutely love the Ululani's franchise first discovering it in Maui. We'd go every day while on vacation there sometimes twice a day (don't judge, it was hot those days). When one opened on Hollywood Blvd we literally drove to LA just for that. So worth the traffic. But no more!!!! To us it's the best shave ice hands down (and yes we've been to Matsumoto). Lots of places you know it's ice because you end up crunching your way through the bowl. Not at Ululani's. "Feathery" texture would work...but let's just call it LOVE. Syrups...I'd be like an deliriously sun stroked tourist if I tried to list them all. A benefit of a long line (be warned) is you get time to look at the menu and try to concoct something (up to 3 for a BYO). Or just trust Ululani's and get one of their creations. I'm lazy so I do that. My favorite to date is Coconut Lover's. The syrups are coconut, pina colada (mix of coconut and pineapple), and tiger's blood (mix of coconut, strawberry, watermelon). Get the name now? They have a secret menu and recently premiered some "local" themed creations The Friar, The Bonita, and The Chula Vista Chill. WHATEVER YOU ORDER DO THE FOLLOWING: ADD a "snow cap" which is condensed milk ADD the mochi bites! Home made daily! I'd pay for a bowl of these just to snack on! They complete your shave ice experience like no other. Sheer bliss! Ice cream: You can have a scoop of Lappert's ice cream on the bottom of the bowl. I ALWAYS get the Mac Nut ice cream. Came here after dinner about an hour before closing. There was a line out the door which took over an hour to get to the counter. While we were waiting outside, the owner came around and let us sample the blueberry cheese cake shave ice flavor which is not on the menu. When we finally got to the front there was a sign informing us that only the keiki (child) size was being served. I guess it would take them even longer to make the regular size. I chose the ube ice cream on the bottom with mango, coconut and calamansi flavors and mochi on top. The ice was shaved very fine, finer that most places but because it's so fine they have to pack it to hold its shape. They poke holes in the shave ice so that the syrup can penetrate to the center. The flavors had a very natural taste to them. My favorite was the mango. The ube ice cream on the bottom was nice and creamy. They serve Lapperts which is from Kauai. The original location serves Roselani ice cream from Maui. Small difference but Lapperts is still very good ice cream. The mochi on top was made in house and very soft. My friend liked it very much but I thought there was too much powdery starch on the outside. The shave ice has a nice natural flavor, the ice is shaved very fine. Service was very friendly but it takes awhile to make so you gotta be patient. They have a lot of different flavors to choose from, you can choose to have ice cream on the bottom. You can also choose it to be topped with a snow cap (condensed milk), cheese cake topping, li hing mui (preserved plum) sauce and mochi for an up charge or li hing mui powder for free, it goes really well with fruit flavors. I love the shave ice I got on the North Shore practically every day of my trip, so I was excited for this place. It was $10 for a small cup with two flavors. The first thing I noticed was the outstanding decor of this place. They did an amazing job mixing Hawaiian vibes with San Diego beachy vibes and it was very tastefully decorated. The line was LONG! When we got there it was to the door but before leaving the line was past 2 stores to the right. Super super busy - great for business. They had a HUGE selection of flavors and ice creams as a base. There was literally almost every flavor you could think of and you can chose up to 3. What I also liked is that there's pre-made options with customer favorites, so if you're indecisive like me this is perfect. I ended up getting Raspberry, Passion Fruit, and Guava with a vanilla ice cream base, their homemade mochi, and condensed cream . The portions are gigantic too, definitely enough for sharing. In addition to the great experience, the manager of the store greated us upon arrival and gave us samples while we waited in line. She was so kind and friendly which was an added touch. She also seemed to know a lot of the customers and made small talk which made it give off a community vibe. Honestly, I am super disappointed in my most recent visit. It wasn't super busy, they had people waiting for their order but there was no line. I was able to order as soon as I walked in. Despite this, it took 30 mins to receive my order. Nothing special, just 3 flavors and li hing mui powder on top. While waiting I noticed numerous people go up to check on their order because it was just taking that long. There just didn't seem to be much urgency from the staff. It's a big contrast from my first visit right after they opened. Even though there was a long line, we got our order much faster. I took my shaved ice to go. I've heard about this place before and had to stop by to try, the manager MJ was so SWEET. She came by multiple times with different samples of their popular flavors. I really loved how the staff was kind and friendly. The place itself was pretty spacious, many seatings except it was packed so it was hard to find a spot. We ended up getting a regular size which was about $10, you can choose ice cream or azuki beans as your base, and then your shaved ice goes on top with up to three syrups. One of my favorite Hawaiian spots made it locally and I was excited to try! I came 15 minutes before it opened on a Saturday afternoon and I was able to leave in an hour - which is faster than some other people. I tried the Rising Sun which had lychee, green tea and almond. I also added condensed milk and mochi. The mochi was to die for soft! My dessert was flavorful and light and I regretted not having some ice cream with it! I was able to taste a few of their flavors from the owner, who was the sweetest person. She did apologize for the extended wait since they were still in training, with the Maui team helping them for a few days. Cafe is clean and had some cute merch. Seating is limited and some ppl sit down first with their party standing in line, which limits the seating options even further. Let's start with the good.... The ice is great. Soft and smooth. Just like getting a shaved ice in Hawaii. The bad.... It was incredibly busy and crowded. The tables and floors were sticky and dirty. There were so many teens talking behind the counter instead of working. This would be fine teens being teens, but not while a whole crowd is crammed in a tiny space waiting to be served. There was so much frustration and tension, that it's hard to enjoy a nice treat with kids screaming inside a tiny space. I think what really caused a one star loss was that when we got to the counter so many flavors were out of stock. Mango, cotton candy, and guava which are the flavors of their "favorite" recipes. Yikes. maybe a little warning before we wait in line for 30 minutes and wait another 30 minutes for our snow cones. Perfect place for a sweet treat on a hot day! Be prepared to wait an hour in line though. Just the price you have to pay for a popular spot. I've never worked in food service before but I wonder if they can prep a bunch of shaved ices beforehand so that they don't have to spend as much time shaping them during rush hour. The staff is so so friendly! I'm always a sucker for tiger's blood. I'll definitely be back again! read more

I decided to try this place out after opening months ago. Partly, because the lines were so ridiculously long. And if I'm being honest, I still prefer the Ululanis's in Hawaii... service was okay. They had two people working and it took what seemed like forever to take our order. We got a couple of sunset beach and the no ka oi - the best (with snow caps of course). I think they could've been a little more generous with the syrups! Ambiance was nice! Love the back drops and pictures on the wall, very aesthetically appealing! Overall, not bad! Still prefer the OG spots in Hawaii. read more
