My wife and I attended an Indian wedding in May, and after toying with ordering something online, the father of the bride recommended Uma Sarees on Devon, so I figured I'd check it out. We entered the store at about 1 p.m. on a Saturday, and in less than an hour, I had completed one of the best shopping experiences of my life--granted, most of my shopping experiences are centered on the clearance rack at stores or the "50 percent off!" page on websites but still. Uma was incredibly helpful. I told her I was looking for something for a Sangeet that didn't make me look like I was nine months pregnant. She sized me up--and there's a lot to size up--and pulled four Kurtas from the shelf behind her. While I tried them on, I overheard Uma and her husband joking around with my wife--I'm assuming about me--which made me feel even more at home. I ended up selecting a set based on Uma's recommendation. We looked around the store for a while, chatting with Uma about their business--the first Indian apparel shop on Devon Avenue--and what to expect at the Sangeet. Thanks to the great service and casual approach, my wife and I exited the store with some super cool clothes and in a better mood than when we entered. I had a wedding to attend in Mumbai. The bride told me just to get everything in India, but I was worried there wouldn't be enough time beforehand. You will just love Uma! I am an older, short, plus-size woman. My original plan in making the trip to Devon Avenue was to go to Uma's Sarees but we arrived before her opening so we began to walk. Stopped in a few stores and either couldn't find the right size or felt pressured to purchase. Got back to Uma's and was so happy. I immediately liked this woman! She was so helpful and informative. I wanted to be sure, that as a non-Indian, I would not offend anyone at the wedding party. She assured me I would be fine. My saree had to be altered and it was done quickly. Uma showed me how to wear it and gave me hints (make sure you tuck it in tight), underpin here, etc. We found earrings that were perfect. All in all, the experience was great.
