Japanese food is among my favorite types of cuisine in the Valley, but with how many ramen shops there are all over town, I don't usually spring for ramen unless it's truly exceptional -- and this place is exceptional. I think it might even be up there as one of my new favorite ramen spots in town, alongside Hashi in Chinatown and Kyuramen in Anthem! The best part is, with how close this restaurant is to my place, I don't have to make nearly as long of a drive if I want ramen. Umai Ramen is located in the Target shopping complex on Sunset and Stephanie, tucked away in the line of shops between Hobby Lobby and Ross. I first spotted this place when I went to the nearby H&R Block to get my taxes done earlier in the year, but I never really had an excuse to come out here until I had the ramen craving strike, and hard -- hence why I decided to bite the bullet and check the place out. One of the things that struck me immediately was their offerings -- of course, they have ramen of all types as you might guess from the name. But they also have different styles of ramen that you don't typically find anywhere, like the more elusive mazemen no-broth ramen, udon noodles, and even tsukemen-style ramen! To say nothing of some of the appetizers -- again, while they have the typical offerings of other noodle houses in town, they also have a selection of items that you really can't find anywhere else. They have multiple types of ramen with unusual toppings, such as their truffle ramen with mushrooms and steak (I need to try that next time I'm here), but I went pretty safe with their black garlic ramen, considered a signature item on their menu, and added an extra egg to it. If I were honest, I didn't need it because the ramen was so full of delicious toppings that I couldn't put my chopsticks or spoon down! Their appetizers are also a must -- I ordered their orange salmon and mango scallops, and I would highly recommend both of those as well. Between bites, the servers would check in on me, refill my water, and provide additional napkins as needed, as well. Needless to say, I'm hooked -- and already I'm thinking of the next time I go here! What will I try next? If you're in the area, give Umai Ramen a try. You just might come back for more. read more

Broth flavor 1.5/5 Umai means "good" in Japanese. What Umai was lacking in flavor was umami (savory taste). This leads me to believe the broth was made in minutes, not hours like the preparation of the best ramen broths are made in. Temperature 4/5 The temperature of the broth was almost perfect. Noodles 2/5 The noodles tasted like it was packaged or dried, similar to instant noodles. Presentation 2.5/5 Average Sliced Pork (chacshu) 4.5/5 Extremely tender and flavorful. It could have been a 5, if it weren't for the abnormally thinly sliced pork. Condiments lacking: 2/5 (no shoga-red ginger, seaweed, or shichimi togarashi) Service: Friendly and minimal 3/5 Overall: Are there better ramen restaurants to choose from? Most definitely! First time here and i was literally licking my plate the food was so good! We got the creamy tonkotsu ramen and the mazemen noodles I definitely have to come back for my own order of the mazemen. Love that we found a spot less than five minutes from our home. Now we don't have to drive all the way to spring mountain for some quality ramen. Great find!! read more

Got some ramen and other Japanese food in Henderson at this unassuming place that's got a lot to choose from. It makes a good meal on a rare cool day around here. Umai Ramen has a pretty authentic menu. Even though it may not be that authentic. There's a ton of options for any preferences. Best place to get ramen around here. It's not a hot weather food so it's often overlooked when it's hot out. This should be given a chance though. Has a lot more than just ramen on the menu. Lots of choices for vegans. It's about $12 for a bowl. The Veggie Black Garlic Ramen is the plant based option. Hot stuff and a lot of it. This is a bowl of veggie broth with veggie black garlic ramen. A lot of good stuff in it. There's bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, black garlic oil, fried garlic, green onions, and fried tofu. Had a hard time finishing it. This was just too hot for the weather. Better to get when it's cooler. Thankfully I was able to get it all finished. Have to say this has the best ramen around. It's a simple menu with a few choices. I've been to Umai Ramen several times -- even on back-to-back days -- and it's always a great experience. I usually get my orders to-go, and they're impressively fast with preparation, which is perfect when I'm short on time. I've tried all of their mazemen, and every one has been absolutely delicious. The flavors are rich, the ingredients fresh, and the portions satisfying. They also have a stamp card, which is a nice perk for regulars like me. A nice little place for a casual meal. It's in the Target shopping center, near Ross. I'm a Ramen fan so opted for the Spicy Mazemen without mushrooms. You can choose thick or thin noodles. I went for the default thick option. In addition to a wide variety of Ramen they also have an assortment of Sushi and appetizers ranging from Karaage (deep-fried chicken), Gyoza and Tempura. The chicken was crispy and delicious. The noodles had just the right amount of bite. Very enjoyableand the service was great There's one TV, playing soft-pop music. Food is good but the restaurant smells cigarette smoke, I'm not sure why. Most tables are good for a party of 2 only. They only have 1 table for 4 and even if there was only 1 customer when we arrived but they would not give us the bigger table for me and my husband. The chair does not accomodate a place to hung my purse so I ate wearing my purse or purse in my lap. Staff is also distant. No one came after us and the one customer they had has finished eating and left so it's not busy at all so they could have given us the bigger table. Other tables can easily rearrange. The customer service here was terrible. When we walked in, the lady told us to sit anywhere, so we did -- but no one brought menus. About 5 minutes later she came by asking if we were ready to order, even though we hadn't even seen the menu yet. When we finally got to order, she came back rushing us again. The food was honestly mediocre at best. We didn't even finish it -- we were just too hungry to leave it untouched. When I asked for salt and pepper, she rolled her eyes and then came back a few minutes later asking to take them back while we were still eating. Who does that? We saw this little ramen shop a while ago, but I never did try until tonight! We were always curious about this restaurant, so being that the weather has been pretty cold, we went in to try their ramen. Walking in, the restaurant is small, with about a half dozen tables. We were promptly greeted as we walked in and were immediately seated. Looking around, the place is very clean and the decor is very simple. The menu has a typical mix of ramen and fried rice, but they also have fresh sushi! Ordered tonkatsu ramen, cha shu fried rice, and a crunchy sushi roll. Our food arrived fairly quickly, and we dug in. First, the fried rice looked dark with soy sauce sauce, but it was very tasty, and I was pleasantly surprised. Next up, the sushi! It was very fresh, with perfectly cooked rice, and this too was very tasty! The tonkatsu ramen came piping hot, and the noodles were cooked al dente, which to me is how it should always be. The soup was a little weak, meaning it could be a little richer, but they also sell a richer version of tonkatsu ramen as well. Maybe I'll try that version next. Overall, the food was great! I've driven by this little ramen shop tucked in the corner several times and finally went in last night. This little ramen shop is so cute inside and the staff are so friendly. You can see the chefs cooking in the back so you know your food is fresh when coming out and it comes out so quickly!
