Wow, creative drink and food menu. Hubs loved his Chicken Tinga Happy Hour Tostadas, and I devoured my Beet Tosadas. Draft beer and a special cocktail rounded out our first Happy Hour here. They were busy just after 4pm on Friday. Jonathan was fabulous as our server, and we found out this is a sister restaurant to Sonrisa Grill in Lake Las Vegas. Visited Chinitas on 2/14 for a quick brunch. Ordered the carnitas fries, birria egg rolls, and salmon and lemon sushi roll (forgot the specific name). The food tasted delicious and paired well with the drink I got. Since it was Valentine's Day, the venue was hosting a Galentine's event in the patio and also had a DJ. Everything was nicely decorated, and I even heard the DJ state song requests were free, a nice touch. Service was quick, and everything tasted delicious. We ordered a couple rolls spicy garlic edamame and the Elote corn ribs and everything was amazing. Here at Chinitas on Water Street, you will find a mixed fusion of Japanese and Mexican food. We walked in and we were seated right away, where a live DJ was present on the outdoor patio. Reservations are recommended during peak hours, but that didn't matter to us since we got here later in the night. Kyle and I have had sushi on our minds for a while now and we immediately looked at the sushi menu. But first, we decided to share an appetizer of birria eggrolls, which were topped with cilantro and pickled onions. These were really good! Whenever we go to a Japanese restaurant, Kyle always orders a thing of nigiri on the side along with his sushi. Nigiri is a sometimes kind of dish for me because I'll never know how many sushi rolls I'll get, and I'm that someone who gets full easily. I ordered the Hawaiian Roll and Kyle ordered the Baka Roll, along with the salmon nigiri. The first and last Hawaiian Roll on my plate had a crunchy shrimp tail attached on one side, which ended up adding more of that fishy flavor to it. The Baka Roll came with a thing of noodles and was topped with I believe were crunchy onions, drizzled with numerous sauces. Before we left, I went to go use the restroom and they were very clean, although I did have some trouble locking the stall door at first. A clean restroom is something that I always expect when I visit a restaurant. If you're a happy hour fan, Monday is definitely the best day to be here, as they have this all day on Monday's. We ordered both sushi and kitchen items. First the sushi roll came, a few minutes later the kitchen items arrived, the nigiri items were missing. However, the service was not good today. No silverware, no one came to the table to check on us so I had to get our own silverware from the service station. I had to ask the server to bring the nigiri, it was sitting up on the service counter for pickup, after we had eaten the sushi roll and the kitchen items. He then stopped at four more tables before bringing the nigiri. And that's only happened after he caught glimpse of our table having completed our meal and waiting for the nigiri. Was the food good? And my only critique is that the chicken salad was served on four pieces of lettuce versus just two. The fillings were spilling over as I was trying to bring it to my mouth and take a bite. Fusion? More like con-fusion. Chinitas is a restaurant on Water Street in Henderson that has "combined the savory flavors of Mexican and Asian cuisine" per their website. It looks like they've also incorporated a sports bar vibe as well as a country night. The parking lot in the back had ample space when I showed up during Friday happy hour. Although I didn't get any entrees or tacos, I did try quite a variety of items. Unfortunately, most of them just weren't that satisfying. Chicken Tinga Tostadas ($5.00 HH): actually one of the better dishes overall, with toppings that all make sense in my mouth. What didn't quite work was how the chicken was not shredded very finely, so it ended up being a chore to finish the process of biting. Crispy Pork Wontons ($6.00 HH): I didn't get it. The wontons were crispy, but the pork was barely noticeable. The sweet and sour sauce leaned heavily toward sweet, and the overall flavor profile just didn't taste like anything I've had in Mexican or any Asian cuisine. Chicken Lettuce Cups ($5.00 HH): another unexpected surprise, in a negative way. I'm not sure what to expect from bang bang sauce, but I didn't want a sauce reminiscent of peanut butter in an overly sweet way. With the fresh toppings and ingredients, it would have been a home run with a better sauce. Elote Ribs ($5.00 HH): another miss. The underlying corn was a little too mushy and wasn't salted at all. For the "ribs" on the bottom layer, the mayo and cotija didn't cover all of the corn up as you would expect in elote, which exposed the underlying issues. The gimmick would have worked with better execution. House Special Cauliflower ($10.00): our lone pick that wasn't on the happy hour menu. Our server recommended this over brussels sprouts, and I can say now that I regret allowing that question. The cauliflower was just too soft and grainy, not a good meat replacement. The sweet and spicy sauce was actually pretty enjoyable, but the dish was already lost by that point. The Sashimi ($8.00 HH) dishes were a mixed bag. They all come with ponzu sauce, a bit of serrano pepper, and some shredded daikon. The yellowtail wasn't bad, but the bluefin was among the more boring and bland bites of raw tuna which I've had. The California ($6.00 HH) and Rainbow Roll ($13.00 HH) were just fine, nothing exceptional. They felt a bit overly wet thanks to however they prepared the rice. You can get comparable if not better quality rolls from most if not all local all-you-can-eat sushi restaurants. I thought I was getting really full by the end, but it was just a reaction to subpar food. Chinitas might be the kind of place where having alcohol is mandatory to distract you from the preparation of the food. Based on the hype, I expected something on par with the halcyon days of Soho Japanese Restaurant, but instead I got what's most likely going to be a first and final visit. read more

I even asked him about a confirmation over the phone or thru text and he said no need. Well....luckily we were still able to get seated right away on a Saturday afternoon.
