We were starving and driving from St. Pete to Clearwater and ended up wandering into this joint. Parking was easy outside in the lot. It was lunch time and we were the only customers in the whole place, so we got very prompt service. It was very dark inside, but I don't mind that on a super hot day. They had a nice lunch special of 3 rolls for only $13 (from a limited selection of basic rolls) and I feel like that's a good deal. The rolls were nothing special, but good enough.

The restaurant is clean. Upon entering it has an over powering smell of cleaning products. The walls have cute paintings matching the Asian theme. Our server was cordial and quickly took our drink and food orders. Didn't take long to get our food, even though we had a party of seven. I ordered the lunch special - hibachi steak and chicken. The plate is a nice portion. The fried rice was mildly flavored, the noodles were a bit greasy. The shrimp was delicious and the steak was small in portion and slightly overcooked. For the price, though, it was okay.

5 stars for Umai Sushi. If you're dining in, you have 2 choices - 1.) Do all you can eat sushi for a fixed price lunch or dinner (this includes appetizers like soup, salad etc) 2.) order a La carte - you can order sushi or the Japanese food they have I opted for the all you can eat lunch special sushi - it was delicious. All of the sushi was very fresh and perfect temperature and presentation wise. They have patio garden seating and plenty of indoor seating - there are also some cool lights and decor inside (even in the bathroom!). The server I had was also very friendly. I'd definitely recommend a visit if you're in the area and want some great sushi.

Stopped here with my mom and it was really great! They were definitely short staffed and I felt bad for the one server that was running around like crazy, but she did a great job! My mom and I split 3 rolls and all of them were great and you could taste that the ingredients were definitely fresh. While I enjoyed all the rolls, I wouldn't say there was anything exceptional about them. All pretty standard, but still tasty. The spicy miso soup was delicious! Honestly, it's one of the best, simple soups I've ever had at a restaurant! It was light, but flavorful with the perfect amount of spice. I would come back here for sure if I'm in town again. It's a cute, small place with fresh, flavorful foods.

One of my favorites! The chicken with noodles. Add fresh mushrooms!! Crab Rangoon is delish! Chicken katsu is crispy & fresh. I'm not a fan of the beef since it's generally tough. Everything else is perfect. Yum!!

I had been meaning to try this place out but never got around to it. Went today & I won't be going back! The service was nice but I saw one of the staff members touching the food without gloves. Everyone had on gloves but him. With so much going around that was all I needed to see. Luckily what he was touching was not not what I ordered or I would have gotten up and left! That's not acceptable! I had the spicy tuna roll which was deep fried and the tuna was very warm and fully cooked. I didn't eat all of it. I'm all for trying new places especially when it's close to home. But nope... never going back.

My roommate and I just moved to the area from Ohio and love to try new foods. I previously worked at a fine dining sushi restaurant so I'd like to think I know what defines good sushi. This place definitely does. The presentation on a wooden boat was delightful. The rice was warm and fresh (which I love) and the sushi was rolled very tight. The prices were absolutely amazing for the amount of food we got. Our waiter was very pleasant and attentive. Definitely my new go to sushi and Asian cuisine in the area. Will not be going back. We ordered a sushi boat for 2 people. The only good part of the meal was the spicy miso soup. The sushi/sashimi itself was flavorless, looked old/colors were faded, fish obviously farm-raised, not to mention the escolar (white tuna) was frozen in the middle. The inside is old and run down, and the manager walks around in flip flops, leggings, and a tank top. And no one working there is Japanese. I am at a complete loss for all of the rave reviews. I managed to eat three pieces of sushi, and then had to stop. read more

I ordered a volcano sushi roll to go and it was full of unmixed mayonnaise and it was not good. The service was horrible as well - and like I said this was a to go order so I can't imagine what it would be like if I ate in the restaurant. Huge disappointment read more

But the sushi was bland, the sauces had no flavor, what was supposed to be "tuna" looked and tasted like it got ran over by a car. Our hot and cold rolls were luke warm, and for sushi that grosses me out. Don't think I'll be returning. read more

Best Crab Rangoons ever, freshest Sushi, beautiful presentation. We had the Diablo Roll, Pacific Fusion Roll (stellar absolutely delish), Spicy Tuna and Spicy Conch and Cucumber Rolls. The Yelp reviews didn't let us down. The food was fantastic. I was a little let down the hibachi wasn't cooked in front of you, but it was still beyond excellent. They even made custom sushi rolls for my wife. Highly recommended. Dawn was also an amazing server and fun to talk with. The beef tataki was phenomenal also. read more

If I could leave 6 stars I would! Our normal sushi spot is closed on sundays and we were craving sushi somethin fierce. We searched and found Umai. The outside isn't the best but cmon now...what is THAT beautiful off of Missouri?! The inside is big and very clean, the staff was prompt and extremely polite, and the food.. was amazing! I've been living in largo for 4 years and have visited many sushi restaurants and none have wowed me. This place is amazing every roll I ordered was very tasty. We ordered the lobster roll, monster roll, and the osaka roll all are very delicious. My kids ordered the hibachi steak and they loved. This place is fairly new, the waiter was nice and very informative with the menu he suggested the monster roll. And it was yummy. People already inside finish their meals. The staff then does closing work after the last customers leave. How did ordering food go from being able to make a phone call to involving two separate phone apps, and two other parties where each can just point fingers at each other when a mistake is made? In the time it's taken me to trouble shoot this I could have driven to the restaurant and back twice, but it's not about that. When one pays for a simple service, they should expect to receive that simple service. Don't eat at this place, they don't care about the customer.

We just wanted to post this review so that people know before they drive across town to eat there. So here it is, the answer to you question "doesn't he know all restaurants do that?" No, they don't. There's an important distinction between "closing time" and "last seating," and yes, different restaurants do it differently. IMHO, there's a right way and a wrong way. If a restaurant publishes 3:00 PM as its closing time, the ordinary customer interpretation is that you can walk in at 2:48 and be served. For many, quality restaurants, who care about their hangry customers, what they do is seat people up until the posted closing time, and the doors stop admitting new customers. People already inside finish their meals. The staff then does closing work after the last customers leave. So if the restaurant wants the dining room empty and employees effectively finished by 3:00, it really ought to advertise an earlier closing time.
