Nestled in between Italian eateries, this Japanese restaurant seems out of place at first but it's in such a prime location for a reason. I was taken to this lovely establishment by my partner for a valentines day date. We love trying different restaurants, especially those in the North End! Umami Crudo was a wonderful and intimate restaurant that we would love to return to for any occasion. Drinks/apps: our helpful waiter recommended a bottle of sake to us that matched what we liked - sweet, fruity and paired really well with our meal! We each tried the umami spoon, which had all kinds of goodies on it; a bit of caviar, roe, an egg yolk that burst in my mouth, some uni which was creamy and sweet. It all comes together in a glorious explosion of salty and savory flavors. We also went for the oyster sashimi with grapefruit granita. They were good but I honestly don't remember the grapefruit sticking out to me at all. Presentation was pleasant. We ordered uni separately because we wanted to try it. Super creamy and sweet. The flavor is so light that it almost gets overpowered by the rice somehow. Entrees: we decided to get one omakase board to share. I would honestly recommend getting one for each person, since the sushi themselves are quite small and you wont get full. But this was such a great way to experience a bunch of different flavors if you have no idea where to start! Each piece was so creative and tasty. Dessert: I got some sort of cheese cake which was unremarkable. I wouldn't waste stomach space on desserts here. Focus on the seafood!! TL;DR- umami spoon was a flavor bomb, so good! Such a gem in the North End! Chef Gary Lei knows how to put his own unique spin on pan-Asian food and make it even more delicious. The lunch special (6pc omakase with a maki roll) is such a good deal and tastes wonderful, with fresh and multifaceted toppings on each nigiri. The corn tapa and chicken noodles are perfectly seasoned and aren't greasy, which is so hard to find! The hamachi crudo tastes so fresh and tropical, and of COURSE the umami spoon is rich and delicious as always. I love that Chef Gary kept some elements from Umami in Cambridge but is venturing into a whole different vibe and concept here. This is the same team as Umami Omakase in Cambridge led by Chef Gary Lei, and it shows where it counts. The quality is the same as Umami Omakase, so one gets to enjoy excellent sushi in a table dine-in setting with friends rather than a traditional omakase experience at the sushi bar. 4.5 stars I only recently saw this spot pop up and knew I had to try it. The (so far, small number of) reviews gave excellent ratings, so I was excited to try sushi in the North End for the first time. The restaurant is quite small, but I came during a weekday lunch so it was pretty empty, with only one other party seated when I arrived. I will admit to sticker shock when I first got the menu, as the website doesn't have a working menu link and there haven't been enough reviews posted with photos of the menu. It's extremely expensive, with even your "basic" spicy salmon or spicy tuna rolls going for $19. The menu also isn't extensive, with many of the dishes/rolls featuring shellfish, which I can't have. I was curious about the $35 lunch omakase special I had seen advertised on social media, but I wasn't offered that when I went in. I ended up "splurging" on a $26 seared salmon roll. To put it succinctly, the quality of the sushi was excellent. The seared salmon was certainly well-made and hefty enough that I wasn't starving when I left (though certainly not stuffed, either). My only wishes would be for a bit more customizability (for instance, the server poured soy sauce for me, and there was no accompanying wasabi for me to add if I so desired) and larger quantity for such high prices. I found the staff to be quite earnest, returning to check on me frequently and asking if the food was okay. I also paid with a digital wallet, which they were kind enough to allow despite not appearing quite set up for it yet, as they didn't have a handheld device I could tap with but had to go to the register. My first impression is that its a cozy and comfortable room where you can enjoy conversation because the music, which is pleasant, isn't too loud. The service is very friendly and our server gave us some excellent recommendations. We had the sea urchin which was amazing because it reminded me of my trip to Maui in 2018! I can tell you right now, I don't remember any of their names, but they were all quite different from each other, and they wanted to make sure I was comprehending and enjoying what I was eating. I told the waiter I was in town to see Patriots in the playoffs. He advised me the best way to get to the stadium from my hotel in Boston. Place was clean. One downside is that it is so close to Faneuil Hall Marketplace, so it is competing with a lot of good restaurants. Was in town for 4.5 days and would have gone here a second time otherwise.
