The food tasted fresher and overall higher quality, and the prices are quite reasonable for what you get. Service was friendly and quick, which made the whole experience even better. I love it when I pick a new restaurant to try and every single dish we pick comes out divine. We picked the Sashimi Sampler, Grilled Miso Salmon, the Geisha and Sexiest Woman Alive roll, and to finish it off--the Matcha Crepe Cake. My favorite was the Geisha roll. The lemon added such a fresh take and enhanced the flavors of the rest of ingredients. My husband's favorite was the Grilled Miso Salmon. Austin was our server and gave great recommendations. Friends, every so often you find yourself in a location where you're not sure what to expect, but you go in like a champ because that's what you do. This was the case with Umami Japanese Bistro. The better half and I were in the area for a ballgame and dropped by. Game was displayed on multiple TVs, so it's good for watching the game. The missus and I are old school sushi fans, so we've tried it all. We tried the appetizers, nigiri, sashimi, rolls, etc here and cane out with a single thought. This place was at or slightly above average on everything. The hostess, Maddy, and our server, Leyna were fan-fucking-tastic, but there's more. Friends, I gotta tell you that the Hamachi Kama (grilled yellowtail neck) is the shit. For real though, I'll put this dish up against anything I've had for flavor anywhere. Truly top notch. I had a great lunch at Umami while visiting Baton Rouge. The restaurant has a casual ambiance with flavorful sushi for everyone, whether you are beginner or a sushi connoisseur. There is ample parking right in front of the restaurant but I could see it filling up at peak times, there are a lot of businesses in the surrounding area. We ordered a sample of a few different items so I could try to capture the full experience at once. I had the Rock & Roll and the Sexiest Woman Alive, both were really good. I prefer traditional rolls as I am a beginner for sushi, so I really liked the Rock & Roll. Both rolls had stellar individual ingredients and the overall flavor profile was made up of a small part of each. The restaurant is fairly small so I would visit with small groups, maybe 4-6 people at max. They can probably move a couple of tables to accommodate but I wouldn't bring a group of 10 here. It's a good size for lunch or an early dinner. The employees are nice and attentive, and they even help you decide on an order based on your tastes. I will definitely be back to visit! read more

A little sad it took me so long to finally make the trek out to LSU to Umami Sushi on Burbank. There are plenty of very good sushi places in the area that have done a great job with the standard "creative" rolls, but Umami's specialty roll menu puts them all to shame. Don't get me wrong, we will still frequent geisha, uchi, etc., but when I want some more creativity and depth, we will bite the bullet and head over to campus. We started out with the Toro belly/truffle appetizer and I accidentally ordered hamachi kama thinking I was ordering the Hamachi Crudo. Boy I'm happy I made that mistake. The yellowtail collar was perfectly broiled and very flavorful. The Toro belly was outstanding as well. The richness of the truffle and the delicateness of the tuna paired wonderfully. For mains, we moved on to the Akami Rouge and Sexiest Woman Alive rolls, both of which were outstanding. The table next to us had Ramen that looked wonderful. We plan to make another trip for soup and yet another for some of the land based animal dishes. read more

I also ordered the Brussels sprouts, which had a good flavor but were a little oily. I went with the salad and the spicy salmon roll and the crab roll. Everything was so delicious! The sushi rolls always fill me up pretty good here. Because I got there right when they opened for lunch ,11:00, I didn't wait for a table and my food came out pretty fast. I enjoyed my experience here. I started with miso soup and it came out fast, perfectly hot, and tasty. I got the Maui roll and it was a fun sushi roll with mango, strawberry and kiwi included yet it still had the classic sushi taste that I love. It was filled with coconut shrimp tempura and snow crab. See picture of menu for full description. I also had their lychee martini and I would give that a 10/10. It tasted great and was made very well. They have an expansive menu with happy hour specials as well including cheaper priced food items and some drinks are 50% off. They also have a BOGO for beer. The inside of the restaurant is clean, neat, and a pleasant sight. They serve you a carafe of water for your table which adds a cute aesthetic and is also helpful to easily refill your cup since their glass cups are rather small. They have wifi as well so you could potentially do lunch and work if you want. Overall, I'd call this an above average sushi and Japanese cuisine spot. Prices are slightly elevated but not wildly so. Customer service was average. If the customer service had wow'd me I would probably give them 5 stars. Food and drinks were great. We tried this restaurant because our favorite Japanese restaurant JINYA Ramen Bar was full. Umami Bistro was very relaxing and inviting. Our waitress was friendly and efficient. We started off with charbroil oysters which was delicious. I ordered Chicken Katsu and my beautiful Husband ordered Yaki Soba with shrimp. Dish presentation was on point. Food was freshly prepared. My only complaint was the chicken was very thin and dry. I found myself drenching the meat in soy sauce to eat it. My husband enjoyed his dish but for the price believed more shrimp could have been added. There's no shortage on shrimp in Louisiana at least I haven't heard it was. We paid including two beers, 1/2 dozen oysters, entrees, plus tip $91.34! I will not discourage anyone from giving them a try. Personally, for me it was not worth the high price tag. read more

Food literally can take you places and Umami took me to Heaven last night. This is not an understatement. If you love raw sushi, this is the place to be. We don't have omakase in Baton Rouge, but Umami brings that with such fresh fish, beautiful presentation, and great service. There were a few big parties including ours of 9 girls and what looked like a bigger party than 9, so they can definitely accommodate a bigger party if you wanted to have a bday dinner or something here! Since my last review 3 years ago, Umami has turned it up 10 notches. Their omakase is sooo good. Cong makes magic happen here. And his wife makes the best green tea crepe cake. You cannot have a bad meal here! Their fish is so fresh. And their nigiri is so well done. The flavors. Cmon. Umami in your mouth. I recently tried their hangover ramen and it was so rich and flavorful. Would def come when I need some carbs and fat to soak up my alcohol from the night before. They have weekly specials that I highly recommend you look through before ordering. If you can't decide, I recommend their omakase aka chef's choice.
