Small portions.handrolls had very little in them. The service was not great. As far as all you can eat sushi restaurants go to Kira in Ronkonkoma is much better: bigger portions, better service. The ginger and wasa had to be ordered as other sushi places bring them to the table along with tea the ginger was cut in little bits. You end up ordering more because of the portions. Went there with a friend this week. The food was good. We actually really enjoyed it. However, we were both shocked at the lack of interaction. The servers gave not even a smile or hello, but not even eye contact. I'm so not rude to servers because I used to work in the industry, but I literally told a man 'eye contact please'. You get the idea until you want stop or if someone orders dessert then you get a check too. Food: The items were either a hit or miss for me. Ordering is all done via iPad. I'm glad there are some sashimi options even for lunch, especially for low-carbers. I believe lunch lasts until 3:30pm on weekdays ($19.99/pp as of the last time I went, which was a few weeks ago). Limited service, since they mostly just bring the items to the table, all interaction is done through iPad, including requesting the first glasses of water for the table. However, the food was good for the most part. I've been here a few times, and only 1 time the salmon sashimi seemed a little off. All other times, things seemed good and fresh. Some of the best things is their fried items. Very nicely crisped and hot when you get it. One of the best items that I know is a filler and usually a buffet 'no-no' -- French fries. But they are the delicious coated fries. If you know, you know. We also get a bunch of tempura veggies and shrimp. The udon dishes (stir fry or soup) come with way too much vegetables lol. I left pictures of all the available items on the lunch menu, I do think $19.99 is a decent price as long as you can eat decent amounts. We can tell from the frosted appearance of the cups and the ice cream residue at the bottom of some of the cups that are usually sticky. When we were done, we decided that the service wasn't warranted of a tip. A tip should be given only when service goes above and beyond. As I paid for our bill (my friends venmoed their share to me) and as we walked out, one of the servers rushed to me rudely demanding a tip of MINIMUM 50%!!!! FIFTY PERCENT TIP!! I was shocked on how rude that server was in demanding a tip for service that was subpar. I felt ambushed and I told him, what I wrote above, and that they did not deserve any tip. You can't do the bare minimum, be rude, food and drinks come out late and expect us to not only tip but OVERTIP you. Will NEVER return here, Umami you messed up, that was inexcusable and I hope more people stop coming to you. You lost a long time customer and shame on you for that. An awesome spot for AYCE. So great in fact, that it has woken me out of my COVID Yelp slumber. I love their iPad ordering system. It really limits the contact between servers and patrons, which protects servers. Protection of staff and patrons is something that is of highest priority to me as a foodie who wants to continue supporting restaurants while keeping essential workers safe. The sushi will surprise you, pleasantly! Typically with all you can eat, the quality suffers a bit because of the sheer volume these sorts of places are pumping out, but not Umami!! Everything tastes fresh and delicious. The salmon sashimi is great, and I'm obsessed with the cozy comfort provided by the delicious hot sake. Another one of my favorite aspects is that you can order tiny affordable 2-3$ single serving portions of lots of different menu items, from pumpkin tempura, to little chicken wings, tuna pizza, and even shrimp on a stick. All of the workers are so pleasant and very conscious about spacing customers out in order to keep patrons safe and 6 ft apart. Service is pleasant and extremely fast. One of the BEST AYCE sushi in Long Island area! For the price, I believe $20 lunch and $30 dinner, you get a decent amount per serving and it's delicious! When you first sit down, you are approached by a waiter/waitress with an iPad. Everything that you would want is on there, from sushi to dessert and even drinks! This system was already here pre-COVID but with the pandemic it has really made me feel comfortable to eat here due to the contactless ordering. The staff are also wearing gloves and masks! Everytime I come, I usually order the specialty roles since they taste the best in my opinion! I also love their appetizers, especially their edamame and fried sweet potato! Not sure if the good reviews were before something changed or if people just have no expectations of quality. Portions at lunch AYCE are pretty tiny. Almost every kind of sashimi was sliced like 1/3 size of any normal sashimi. Most of the sushi rolls with avocado are mostly avocado and the fish on top was like 2mm thick on the rainbow roll. They didn't even offer tuna sashimi at all in the sashimi section of the menu... which is like IHOP missing pancakes. You can really tell they try to cut costs as much as possible to the point it makes it almost pointless to eat here if you actually like good sushi and sashimi because the experience feels lacking. Katsu tasted like it was old, reheated, and stale. At one point I gave up on sushi and we tried the General Tsos chicken which was super salty, even Trader Joe's frozen General Tsos is better. I can at least say that the hot and sour soup was pretty solid though (except that's not why I came here). Toilet paper in the bathroom is higher quality than the food lol Would not recommend this place unless they get their act together or you have zero standards. Driving by and noticed the Grand Opening sign so Hubbie and I went in to give it a try. Warmly greeted by staff. Restaurant was decorated nicely and is immaculate. We were handed an electronic menu which a am not a fan of. Also thought it was to dark for lunch time and the music was a tad to loud. I know this wouldn't bother a lot of people but it's how I feel. Stumbled upon Umami Sushi & Bar after shopping at Smith Haven Mall and realizing our favorite AYCE sushi spot was closed on Tuesdays. My husband and I are sushi fanatics and embraced the opportunity to try a new spot. Definitely a decent option in the area, but didn't give us the 'wow' factor. Located in a small shopping center, Umami Sushi & Bar occupies a large space with plenty of free parking in a lot right outside the front door. The inside is clean and modern looking. Their menu and ordering system is done through iPads/tablets that are given to each table upon being seated. You can scroll through various sections of the menu, add them to your order (similar to an online shopping experience on a website), and send your order directly from the tablet to the kitchen. Although the ordering process eliminates an aspect of the service experience, staff were constantly circulating around to drop off orders, bus tables, refill drinks, and attend to diners. They handled things efficiently and worked as a team to take care of all of the tables. I wouldn't exactly say the service was friendly, but they were attentive. Food was prepared and delivered to our table in a reasonable amount of time per order. We were a little disappointed with the limited selection they offered on their AYCE menu and hoped that maybe with a limited menu, the food would be phenomenal. The food was good and satisfied our sushi cravings for lunch, but nothing was too memorable. The only show stealer for us was the Umami Roll. The integration of the mango brought a nice sweetness to the roll that complemented the rest of the components. We must have housed three of them! Fantastic and I highly recommend. Rolls were a good size and weren't overly stuffed with rice, so we were able to try a few things and felt we got a good deal for some solid sushi. Umami Sushi & Bar would not necessarily be a sushi destination my husband and I would make a special trip to visit while on the island, but we probably would return if we were in the area and didn't want to make the trek somewhere else for some sushi. I thought I would try this place for the first time since my local favorite was closed today and other local sushi places didn't seem as affordable. Their miso soup and shumai were good, but their sushi was not great. even the avocado roll wasn't very good... the seaweed used to wrap it reminded me of those seaweed snacks you can buy at the supermarket. The yellowtail and salmon rolls I got did not seem to have the freshest fish in them. The fish was a little fishy and a little chewy.
