Base my reviews off what you pay: *This place does not take reservations. We did not have to wait at 8PM on a Friday. Price - $60-$100 per person (2 apps, bottle of Sake, sushi platter, 2 rolls) Food - 4/5 - great sushi, killer apps. Service - 2/5 - slight mix up on order. Ambiance - 3/5 - no complaints, nothing fancy. Overall - 3/5 - sushi here is great, really good quality and rolls all together. Their appetizers are phenomenal though, easily the best things we ate (more below). Good selection of everything for someone. Service was fine but they did mix our order up and brought the wrong thing out and time. Also rushed us a bit to get out of there even with empty tables. Ambiance is fine, nothing special but clean and gives a good vibe. You go here the food but good luck anytime between 5-7PM on a weekend night. Definitely worth a stop. Place is small but has excellent service. We were seated quickly, water refilled without having to ask and didn't need to wait too long for our food. Shared the beef negimaki and I had a shrimp roll and the luxe Unami. My husband had the Hole-in-one and California eel. Very yummy and filling dinner. Great place to go. The best sushi on Long Island. All of their restaurants are consistently excellent. For dinner seating it is best to be there before the opening time as it usually fills up quickly. Service is good and the ambiance is pleasant. Tables are close together, but that allows one to see how other options look. There are lots of regulars and some as far away as Queens, NY at the Hauppauge venue. I have never had a problem and they will make adjustments due to allergies. read more

You can definitely tell the difference between Hauppauge sand babylon locations simply by the look and taste of the food. It's slight differences but differences none-the-less. The Chilean sea bass app is my go to favorite thing, and Hauppauge's almost doesn't even seem like Chilean sea bass... I'm sure it is, I know it is, but, like, typically if sea bass is as thin as they serve, it's not Chilean. I dnno, it tastes great, really, but I prefer the smaller/fatter peice I get from Babylon. Came in for a weekend dinner. There was a 30 min wait for two. It was packed out! They give you a warm towel to clean your hands which was a pleasant surprise. I was very hungry and got the sushi and sashimi combo for myself...Tasted so fresh and they were not small pieces. They are a bit more expensive for regular rolls compared to other locations but did appear to be higher quality. Service was great and fast. read more

As a sushi lover, haven't been here in a long time, being the area stopped and had an amazing dinner. Sushi was great, fresh and portion sizes on the sashimi were very good. Apps included Wagu skewers which unfortunately were chewy & sent back without a problem. Otherwise everything else was fantastic. Even the salad with an amazing house made ginger dressing was so distinct versus the typical dressing you get in most restaurants. The Chilean Seabass appetizer was phenomenal, cooked perfectly. The Omakase appetizer was excellent that we also got another one to go. Sashimi deluxe with the UFO roll was perfect, fresh & filling. Marra our server was spot on, polite and very attentive. The Sushi were all FRESH , some if them still warm. I asked the Long Island Foodie FB group and this place was the MOST VOTED in over 200 comments so my husband and I did not wait too long, the comments weren't wrong. We tried sushi, the fried rice, goyza and miso soup, all 10/10! The environment is laud back and relaxed, very nice! Because of so many positive feedback on this restaurant I had to try it. The first time was fine. However, on the second visit, I was turned off. We were seated in the back for a table of two with a shared banquette against the wall. There was just ample space in between tables for one to pass to get to the banquette seating. In the middle of our meal, without asking for our permission, a party of four were seated with the staff joining their table to ours. There was hardly any room separating our table before but now we basically were part of their table. It was absurd. I then asked the staff why they just assumed that was OK for them to do that. We totally had no privacy and my husband and I couldn't speak at all. The staff apologized but given that it's not exactly cheap to eat here, I would've expected at least for them to ask us if it's OK to join this party in our table. Totally unreal! As someone who moved across the country - kotobuki is what i miss when i come back to Long Island. Their Fried Oysters and Spicy Tuna Pizza is to die for. This will always be hands down the best sushi place on long island for me personally. The staff are always kind despite it always being so hectic and busy and some have been there for YEARS! Deserves four stars for being one of the better local sushi spots on the island. I give it three stars because it is always too hectic and chaotic inside as we dine in. Take out is a whole another story. They are always slow and the lady who takes the orders and packs the orders and never seems to get it right when we order takeout. The food is genuinely pretty reliable and good from here. We use to frequent this place pretty regularly but haven't been back and will probably not go back since I bit into a piece of nigiri with a sharp fish bone in it. We just went to Kotobuki with a group and were happily surprised. The food was so much better than some other Japanese restaurants we've been to. We had the grilled squid and gyoza appetizers. Everyone loved both but especially the squid. I had the Gold Coast roll, it was delicious! My husband had the spider roll which he liked very much but preferred my roll. Other couples had the sushi or sashimi platters which were beautiful and huge. Our server was very nice and accommodating. Look forward to our next visit. read more

This restaurant lives up to its name with congratulations and longevity. The fish is so fresh that it melts in your mouth. Every dish is cooked just right without anything to complain about. Try the bento box, sashimi or omakase, and unadorned at lunch. Their prices are reasonable for the quality of the ingredients and well they cook everything. To top it off, service is helpful, friendly, and fast. Parking is ample in the lot and there are stores in the strip mall to hang around if there is a line. Absolutely loved this spot. Called about 20 mins before arrival to ask if we needed reservations and they said no there's lots of tables. By the time we arrived there around 6:30, we got the last table available. So just a warning, it fills up quick! The restaurant is cute and very well decorated. We were on a time constraint so we got right to business. I had the spicy tuna over crispy rice- amazing, the Gold Coast roll and the holy tuna roll. Everything was absolutely fantastic. To be quite honest I don't remember the two rolls my hubby got, but he really enjoyed them as well. Can't wait to come back and try other rolls! read more

Kotobuki is a reasonable destination if you enjoy Japanese food and don't get bothered by shoddy, rude and disorganized management. If you go at a busy time be sure to know that you will not get a table unless you seek out someone to give your phone number to. There is no sign about this or place to wait. They do not take reservations. The person who is supposedly seating people - an elderly woman who has very limited language skills - is also cleaning tables, organizing takeout orders and handling tabs. Catch her if you can! While we waited we were able to observe the chaos of empty tables not being cleared and turned over in a timely manner. No wonder people were standing around for almost an hour. We had driven a distance and met friends and therefore felt compelled to endure this zoo of an operation for almost an hour. It will not happen again. Although the food is good, and let me just say it's not inexpensive, how you treat your patrons matters and this restaurant seems a little too full of itself at this point. While we live in a bottom line world, there are still people who maintain high standards and take pride in running a first rate restaurant. I guess this isn't one of them. read more

I consider myself a long time loyalist to the Kotobuki game. I frequent the one in Babylon a ton, love the one in Roslyn, and now most recently this location. I do love love love the sushi and sashimi for one but since coming to this location... I have a meeting found love for beef and chicken negimaki and the carnival roll.. ordered the chicken negimaki for the first time the other night and I was actually surprised how good it was.. chicken was perfect not dry or overdone .. great splitting app I feel since it comes individually rolled up; really a nice bite.. The carnival roll was so good also tuna interior with salmon and pickled onions on top.. I forget what else is in it; def can see this being one of my new faves. More of Laura's top picks include their salmon or tuna crudo (in oil with lemon and onions, salt, amazing), Chilean sea bass, and of course, the carpaccio. I'm for sure a die hard salmon lover, so that is always my first choice but the tuna is just as amazing. For sure get their bonsai ! It's plum wine mixed with sake mmmm! They continue on just like the others with their no reservations policy... first come, first served basis, you can call ahead to gauge time but make moves after your call bc they def can get a lengthy wait list. read more

My friend and I visited Kotobuki Friday afternoon for dinner. We were worried because we know Kotobuki generally has a long wait. We joined the waitlist through Yelp and was able to get seated about 15 min after arrival. I have previously ordered takeout from Kotobuki but it was my first time dining in and it was overall a good experience. The food came out very promptly and before our main meal, we were provided with miso soup and salad. Our waiter was very attentive and kind. I actually ordered Sushi Deluxe but ended up receiving Sashimi Deluxe instead. I didn't bother to let the server know of the mistake because we were in a bit of a rush to head somewhere else after dinner and I am also a fan of sashimi so it didn't really matter too much. I think it goes back to the fact that the restaurant gets really busy and loud - which probably made the server hard to hear my order. Each slice of sashimi was fresh and really thick and a good size piece. I loved the variety of fish and I appreciated the UFO roll and the salmon carpaccio on the side. I was really full from just having fish, no carbs. I had bad experience with not so fresh raw tuna in the past (in other sushi restaurants) so I am always a little hesitant when eating raw tuna but the tuna from Kotobuki was fresh and delicious. The price is definitely pricey but I don't think it's that bad considering the quality of the food. I would say its definitely the best sushi place out in the area. read more

I am not happy with their take out. Since I was a little girl I would always order beef sukiyaki with my family. We would each get a cast iron pot filled with meat, veggies, and noodles. One of my favorite meals there and of course all the sushi. But tonight I ordered sukiyaki to go. I knew what I was getting when I ordered it to go in the pasted. But when I got to the counter she was only going to hand me a qt of soup for $30.00. Now when you sit down you get miso, salad, white rice and a big pot. One of my favorite restaurants when visiting long Island but today was a fail. I ordered three lunch specials. 2 sashimi lunch and one Tendon. Came home, unwrapped to find there's no rice for Tendon. The whole point of ordering Donburi (rice bowl) is the RICE which was missing. I called. Took three people to tell me that I was wrong that there IS rice on the bottom. They would not hear/ or admit that they made a mistake. I've been going to Kotobuki for last 30 plus years and it's a place I love to make an excuse to go to when visiting my parents. Definitely feels like the most popular sushi spot in the general area. Packed with people. Even the tiny hallway for take out orders was jammed. The nigiri and hand rolls were really good. The chefs are visible behind the counter, slicing and dicing as the orders rolled in. Waitress was super nice. Everything was pretty good and I'm glad I did some research. They were completely out of Otoro and the prices were a bit on the higher side. I've definitely had better quality with lower prices. But it was still worth it. OVERALL: Absolutely worth the trip.
