California Roll and Crunch Much Special Roll

Nice place for Bardstown to have. Love the sushi and fast service. Can't wait to try more of the menu.

I love having sushi here! The spicy california roll is my favorite. Great atmosphere, clean restaurant, what more could you ask for?

Some of the worst sushi I have had an a restaurant in awhile.

Our plan was to get pizza, but the place across the street RAN OUT OF DOUGH hours before closing. Kind of cluster f*** move, but what the hell. Sushi sounded like a good second choice. I was wrong. BTW, unless this was a really off night, I imagine those rating this 4 and 5 star sushi will also say "but the {supermarket name here} actually does some really good sushi" - For the record: NO SUPERMARKET DOES GOOD SUSHI. Period!!! The atmosphere is fine. It feels a bit small town for a standard teppan style Japanese joint. There are two hibachi grill tops, each with about 10 seats around 3 sides. The chef seemed fine, but not as much interaction as a Benihana's. The sushi? I am not sure if you can tell from my picture, but the sushi was a bit dry. The tuna was starting to fall apart. These are signs of sushi not handled correctly or old fish. Neither is particularly attractive. The rice had also been made hours prior and was already starting to pick up the flavors of the restaurant. This is a common problem with sushi rice (and one reason why SUPERMARKET SUSHI SUCKS). The honey in the rice helps the rice pick up everything. On top of that, the rice was cold, meaning someone had put it in a cooler. Bad juju. The taste? Pretty much a cut above supermarket sushi. I would have only done marginally worse on the sushi from the Kroger down the street. My friend, who is less of a sushi snob ranked it meh. And she had a fried roll, which covers up a lot of sushi flaws. To be fair, I would guess the grill would have been better. Prices are certainly better than some big city teppan places, so perhaps a night out with a chef cooking in front of you would be a good thing to do in Bardstown.

Quick , solid service with tasty food that is made consistent . For two days in a row I've had food here - one dine in and one take out . I had the crunch much and spicy crab rolls for dinner and they were delicious . Highly recommend them . The only con I can think of ? Pricing can be seen a bit pricy but it's good food so I don't mind paying it . I did notice the signage isn't the best so without my referral from a associate I worked with that day I wouldn't have saw it or knew about it . I suggest they fix that issue if they can .

Oyster Chase (menu stated served in shot glass)

This is a 3 1/2 star sushi place, but since I can't give that rating, they do deserve better than 3. The staff is courteous and attentive as is the Sushi Chef. The decor is as expected in a sushi/hibachi restaurant and looks clean. For starters, we ordered green tea, though I think it was Oolong (my husband thinks it was old green tea). Our waitress could have misunderstood as I said hot tea... hot green tea. I think it was Oolong which I do like, so no problem there. We started our order with miso soup and salad. The soup is the best I've ever had! My husband ordered an Oyster Chase appetizer which is described in the menu as Oyster, quail egg, massago, pinch of scallion, fish flake, and sauce in a shot glass. It arrived in a martini glass which made the presentation seem a bit off. He said it tasted okay, though heavy on the ponzu sauce. His main was Chirashi which was rice topped with chef's choice of fish - disappointed it was only the standard sashimi appetizer selection. The rice however, he said was some of the best he's had. Fish, though cut in an untraditional way, was fresh. I ordered the Hiya Yako (chilled tofu with grated ginger, green onion, and bonito flake). Interestingly the toppings were served on the side, so I had to assemble which was no big deal. Topped it with soy sauce. It was absolutely delicious - refreshing and my favorite of everything (though the soup was top notch). Next was the Shrimp Shumai that I admit was a bit rubbery and though edible, wasn't very palatable. Finally, the Sashimi De Margarita which was pretty good. The fish was fresh (as was hubby's Chirashi), though the cuts were a bit unusual for sashimi. All in all, it was a good meal. Some hits and some misses. If I lived in the area, I'd visit again.

So ... it's been too long since I reviewed anything. Being five months a transplant from SoCal to Kentucky, we've been homesteading & acclimating & home cooking (mostly) Anyway... Umami is a decent place. Now, that said, wife and I have eaten the Left Coast's premier sushi, so this ain't no five star. And that's no sin. It's just impossible to beat that level in the Ohio River Valley. But here in Bardstown, they did well enough. The teppan chef Martin did well, and the servers were swift and spot-on. Now, as much as the miso was tasty and the rice fried well, and the red snapper was fresh and the teriyaki prepared with zest, it was also fairly vanilla as sushi and hot table Asian can be. The service was fine but if I wasn't fluent in Spanish, we wouldn't have gotten handled as well. The three severs speak almost zero English, and the Asian owners speak only slightly more. There are issues here with speed and comprehension and in my experience, Spanish speakers in the west meet you halfway. The fact is that here, tough titty if your don't speak it to their standard. So ... I loaded up on my Español and landed the plane myself. I caught two errors before they became a problem so no harm done, but like I said ... the diner shouldn't have to shoulder that burden. That should rest on the staff. So, viva la multi cultural and all that, but here in Bluegrass country, y'all better bring your English if you want lots of love. Also, even without that barrier, if the sauces & staples of Asian fusion compare to the Kroger aisle in taste, three stars is a kind rating. I hope things get better. We'd like to come back soon.

Food was good, service was fast. I figured I'd update the menu on this review for everyone!

Do not go here if you want good service. I was very disappointed with the customer service but the food was mediocre.

It was so dang delicious that I can't wait for the next tournament to go back!! We had the crawfish dip, crab leg boil and shrimp boil. It was all so good but lemme tell you about these crab legs!!!! Insanely good! Better than the ones we get in Florida!! They were so well seasoned. The Royal Reds & fried shrimp were delicious. The sausage was perfectly cooked!! Those potatoes cut like butter. The crawfish dip was plentiful with crawfish tails!! Not a single complaint!! Prices are good. Bathrooms clean. Friendly staff. Highly recommend!!

A little "hole in the wall" seafood joint. The food is good and the service was polite, and prices…read morewere reasonable given that it's seafood (which isn't cheap to get fresh in Kentucky). I had the fried shrimp, and they clearly were NOT just frozen shrimp they'd bought somewhere and fried, these seemed homemade. . .definitely NOT typical mass-production shrimp. The food was pretty good. There's two things I would list as downsides, however. The first is that the wait for service was pretty long. It was quite a long wait from when I ordered until I got my food. That's a minor downside, given the quality. I got the picture they might not have a robust back-of-house staff. The second, and bigger downside is. . .I didn't go there expecting a seafood place! The well-worn sign out front still says "Deez Butts" BBQ, and I'd followed signs from the freeway exit thinking I was going to a barbecue joint. When I stepped inside, I pieced together as I was standing in line that the BBQ had closed and this was now a seafood place. It was good food, but I was expecting barbecue and was too hungry to bother hunting for another place to eat. I was left wondering if they couldn't afford to change the (well worn) sign out front. It just seemed a little odd that the sign out front is for a barbecue joint, but it's a seafood place inside.
