My boss and I were a little hesitant about eating sushi in Bardstown, but we took a risk and were so glad we did! This is an understated little place in a somewhat older shopping center, very unassuming on the outside. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, although there was a slight language barrier that led to some confusion when ordering, but nothing was omitted or brought out incorrectly. The sushi menu is many pages long and the rolls themselves are quite creative! We thoroughly enjoyed the Bardstown Roll, which contained cream cheese, fried chicken, spicy crab, and was topped with fried snapper. Coincidentally we both ordered the shrimp fried rice, which was more fine dining style than what typically comes in a Chinese to-go box. These shrimp (~5 medium size) were marinated and grilled up teriyaki style, then laid atop the bed of fried rice - not all mixed together. It was absolutely delicious and a huge portion. There was some confusion about whether the lunch specials come with a soup AND/OR a salad (menu says OR), but I say opt for the soup. I got the salad and I think it had about 4 pieces of chopped lettuce in it; pretty measly. read more

Updated review: now that this place has reopened since COVID closure, I can review the full restaurant. I would still give the food a 5 rating, but the restaurant itself barely earns a 3 star rating. I'm giving that because my husband interacted with the owner once and said he is super friendly. His staff is not. We've dined in multiple times now and the staff is never friendly and usually blatantly rude. One time (midday) we were told hibachi wasn't an option and would be an hour wait (no one was at any hibachi tables). Another night we came in with an hour still left for them to be open and the guy who greeted us abruptly repeated "2 to go right?" trying to bully us into getting carryout instead. One waitress is nicer than the other but that isn't saying much. I asked for non-soft drink drink options and the waitress literally sighed in irritation and said "I mean water or beer?" Oooooohhhk, thanks. We almost exclusively get food to go here now. The food is great, but the service is absolutely terrible. The sushi chef is talented and quick, so that's nice. read more

Came here on a date and as I've never been before, my date says this is the best place in town for sushi. I ordered the seafood pancake as I had one recently in NYC and that's the food I've been craving ever since. My date had ordered a spicy sushi, I can't remember the name. Umami Sushi is not authentic at all. It's a combination of Japanese and Korean food. I ordered the seafood bi bim bab and there were two tablespoons of chopped up seafood served with a big pot of rice. The service is also bad. If the waitress hears the wrong order, she will blame you for it and reprimand you for not making it clear. Tonkatsu might be the only safe dish. Good luck! read more

The sushi is great but the prices are not. There needs to be a better lunch deal. Why pay one price for one roll when you can get three for the same price else where. This is the main reason I haven't been back. I completely understand dinner pricing but lunch needs a get up badly. read more

This was our first visit to Umami Sushi, but it won't be our last! We weren't the only people who thought of beating the Valentine Day rush by eating out the night before, but tables were still available at 7. We were greeted at the door by a very nice man who informed us that it would be approximately 45 minutes before a seat at one of the two hibachi grills would be available but that we could sit at a table & order the same food off the menu. Hubby chose the Sukiyaki beef & I had steak & scallops. Both meals came with soup & salad; the soup was tasty & the salad was made with lettuce that was actually not wilted, a problem I have often found in some other Asian kitchens. Our meals were positively delightful!! My steak was cooked exactly as I asked, fork tender; the scallops were so sweet & tender that I could swear they were caught a couple of hours before we arrived. The fried rice & grilled vegetables that accompanied our dinners were so tasty ! Rice wasn't at all greasy & veggies were just right. Hubby cleaned his platter but I had to bring part of my dinner home, thinking that I would eat it for lunch today... but my son got a whiff of that delicious aroma & that was the end of my leftovers! Service was terrific without hovering, atmosphere was jovial, & the place seemed very clean. Positives: Everything tasted good. In particular I liked the oyster chaser, which had big flavors but didn't mask the nice oyster flavor. The location is nice. It is right across the street from the Hampton Inn, so if you are staying there it is very convenient. The Saba wasn't as good as some I've had, but it was a nice cut of fish and again I enjoyed it. Negatives: The rice that came with the bulgogi was a bit chewier than I'm used to, but not to the point that it bothered me. The bulgogi tasted pretty good, but wasn't spicy at all and seemed more like a bulgogi stir fry. Service was a little spotty as far as timing, but everyone was friendly and welcoming. Conclusion: With these Japanese fusion places I usually find it safer to go with a Korean dish and a couple of items from the sushi bar. Interestingly enough after tonight I wish I had tried a larger sampling from the sushi bar. Will update my review after I've had a couple of more chances to explore the menu. I'm new to the sushi scene, but I went with two experienced tasters, and we all three agreed that it was very good. They provide a sushi bar, hibachi grill (with trained chefs), and a full alcohol bar. The outside was a tad sketchy, but the inside was very comfortable. The service was very quick and helpful. Love this fast and family friendly hibachi and sushi local spot! The food is nothing short of amazing! Very fast and efficient employees, always willing to go the extra mile during every visit even with a grouchy toddler from time to time! The owners always come around to help when needed to make every trip a great outing. My 3 year old who is very picky by the way always refers to Umami as "the fire place" and requests this establishment more then any other dinner restaurant! The food is perfected no matter which talented cook you receive and always cooked to perfection! I love the hibachi New York steak with shrimp; definitely recommend it! Very tender steak cooked how you prefer. As a sushi choice, I love the crunch munch roll! Try it with the ginger dressing as a dipping sauce; won't disappoint! Service was has half decent. The place is a little run down and when you first walk in you are a little let down considering this place averages 4 stars. Ordered the Derby Roll and the Unami roll. The Derby had shrimp and scallops on the top. This shrimp and scallop smelled horrible I pulled mine off and the chef used a blow torch to blacken them? Made the place smell like the gas he was using. At the time of writing this I am not sure how my stomach will fare. The Unami was so-so was not sure where the eel was on it. The gyoza and edamame were good enough. Finished with tempura ice cream. First few bites were amazing but after awhile the baseball sized frozen ball of ice cream gets a little boring. Bathrooms were kind of gross, door would not lock or close and there was barely any soap in the dispenser. Wonder what the folks who work there are using? I went here after traveling for seven hours to go on the bourbon trail. It was around 9:15 when we arrived. The restaurant says they close at 10. They rushed us the entire time. Our food took only about seven minutes, and it tasted like it was microwaved. Turns out, they were rushing us out to have a family meal themselves, which looked way more appetizing than any of the food we received. I've learned, just because something is close, don't always trust it. The toilet paper in the bathroom was superb though-definitely deserves one star. plain and simple....it's kentucky sushi. nothing authentic about this place. for the first time in my ife, I didn't eat all of my California rolls. the meat in my bourbon steak was so chewy, I had to spit it out in a napkin. however, my husband said his was very tender. I had him try mine and he was shocked at the difference. they do have a fully stocked bar, but their ability to make a drink is limited. We found this place by accident. We were staying in the nearby Comfort Inn (which is a nice place to stay) and it was late (9:00) and it happened to be open. Very pleasantly surprised. While the exterior doesn't evoke great sushi, this is a fantastic sushi place. We never expected to find decent sushi, much less great sushi, in a strip mall in Bardstown.
