We live in town and I've had to visit multiple departments, including the ER for both myself and taking my parents. In the 10 years or so since I first left the review, I can honestly stay I stand by my original assessment. If you, literally, don't think you'll survive the drive to Lahey or Mass General then certainly go here. Otherwise, do whatever you can to get to a better hospital. Aside from my own 1-star experiences, I've heard multiple stories of similar experiences of close friends and immediate family getting grossly misdiagnosed by Emerson. Most recently they sent a friend home after a CAT scan with a "concussion" which, fortunately, the Lahey Clinic almost immediately discovered were severe brain lesions. My father was in a car accident where Emerson missed a broken back and concussion - again, fortunately, caught days later by another hospital. It's unfortunate as we live about 2.3 miles away but between our experiences and local paramedics recommending other hospitals, it's simply not worth stopping unless absolutely critical. (Side note: Yelp's, "Not Recommended" reviews for Emerson are worth a read.)

I was then seen by a nurse who took my vitals and asked questions about my back issue. This started at about 8:40am. After that was complete, I assumed the Doctor would come in a few minutes after since there was no wait and was the only person in the office area. After waiting for 43 minutes in the patient room, NO CONTACT WITH ANYONE ABOUT THE WAIT TIME. At 9:30am I had to open the door and ask the nurse at the front desk how much longer?? She said another 15 minutes because the Doctor was with a patient, mind you I had an appointment scheduled to avoid this type of wait time and the app said that nobody was ahead of me in the scheduling time slot. At 9:48am, the doctor strolls in. No introduction as to who she is and no apologies about the wait time. Then goes to tell me I just need to stretch due to my serve back pain and can barley bend over to attempt to touch my toes. No common curtesy of wasting my time when I had to be at work for 10am, WHICH WAS A 20 MINUTE DRIVE. This is why I even scheduled an 8:30am appointment to make it to work on time. After "diagnosing" after a 3 minute appointment, I walk out and one of the nurses is just taking a casual nap at the nurses station!! What joke this place is!! COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME AND SO UNPROFESSIONAL!! THIS LOCATION IS AWFUL. AVOID THIS PLACE IF POSSIBLE!! THIS IS BY FAR THE WORST EXPEIRENCE AT AN URGENT CARE I HAVE EVER HAD. ZERO STARS !!!!!!!!!

I was drawing in a public room with two staff in the room when they started talking about how they both knew this girl and one of the staff had sex with her, meanwhile im a victim of sexual assault , and a minor. care was horrible. I was left in my room crying/ having panic attacks often, with no one checking in on me. I was told by the social worker Alfonso he couldn't help me b/c he was off the clock, and he was frustrated. my sink didn't work, my room felt like it was a refrigerator, and there was constant screaming from other patients when I have PTSD with loud noises. staff hardly ever deescalated situations, making patients even more mad, and at only point I witnessed a fight between a patient and staff because a patient was mad and staff instigated it by being rude back. Rather than treating me for PTSD, this place made it so much worse. Anything that even remotely reminds me of here sends me into panic mode. I cannot stress this enough, do not go here. Just about any other option is better, and especially for minors, this place only leads to worse anxiety and depression. My treatment team didn't even know what there were treating half the time, confusing me with other people, and would skip days and use random dates for my birth control, a very simple med to take everyday in order. At one point during my stay another patient started asking me to marry them, and would touch me without my consent (again, I'm a victim of SA so touch is hard for me), and staff would often see this, and how uncomfortable I was, and not do anything. The only saving grace was the occupational therapist Caroline, she is amazing, super sweet, very attentive. Doctor Richard, the school teacher on the unit, was also great. I learned so much, he's a super sweet man, and he looked after my needs (like stress, hunger, and dehydration) more then the nurses and counselors did and that's not even his job. Sharon, one of the counselor, was pretty good though. She was someone I can say definitely helped. When it came time for discharge Alfonso sent my parents ANOTHER mental hospital I would have to stay at just like this one when I was recovering, fully functional, communicative, and ready to return to school after suffering trauma. He did this without me knowing, and told me that the plan was going to be outpatient afterschool hours with me back home while I finish long term healing. Luckily I have parents who respected my autonomy to decide to go home, otherwise I would be in a cycle of more and more hospitals, when I was NEVER a danger to myself or others, only traumatized and needing to heal. I cannot express this enough, Alfonso has ZERO care in the world about the kids he treats, and shouldn't be in this line of work. To be a social worker you need to care, Alfonso didnt even know what I was being treated for half the time, and was going to go against my wishes and what he told me to put me in a different hospital when I was already healing fast, and not a threat to anyone at all. Metrowest medical center- if you're reading this- genuinely fire Alfonso. This place didn't respect my rights as a patient, worsened my PTSD, and was just a horrible environment no one deserves to experience. dont come here. And Alfonso i really hope you can one day learn not to size up victims of assult as "crazy teens" who you exclude from communication about their own treatment.

I will say their food regiment is top notch, I gained 20lbs from being allowed to eat all sorts of good food. My only gripe is that these guys embody the phrase "land of the free, home of the brave". Your free to go here, but good luck not being milked into a prolonged stay. COVID restrictions make family rescuing you very difficult. The human rights officer thankfully was my only saving grace and ironically was the only legally obligatory role at a mental institution (their words, not mine). The whole experience felt like it was crafted to feed into psychosis, at one point 2 "employees" walked together and one came toward the patient area after mentioning a drug's name (basically curated to make patients think they were in a controlled setting) -- the admission for her being 99% not ordinary compared to other patients. The other patients there for adults seemed rather nice despite varying levels of social disorders/disconnect. During my stay I literally felt that I was growing as a person despite the mentally taxing circumstances. The oddest thing was my mental circumstances being such that I could do things that under normal circumstances I physically would never be able to do. If you go in with psychosis, you will definitely go to the extreme of thinking that you are special and then be brought back to earth to behave like a normal person solely to be discharged. If you go in thinking that paranormal activity is a hoax, you will definitely leave believing that paranormal things have happened to you. Overall I actually wish I could go back to confirm things. Their staff (mental health technicians) are all very good in different ways, thus the good rating. Their drawback is the questionable methods used to keep people there for prolonged times (I was literally coerced into taking a new drug as a condition of discharge --the drug proceeded to make me unable to function normally and I had to emotionally breakdown into tears to make myself able to sit down and fill out discharge paperwork, the drug then proceeded to give me blurred vision when I failed to remember to go to the Pharmacy to get meds that would have fought the side effects... I was subsequently brought to another mental health establishment because I was too restless to sleep).

I am writing this to warn other parents, particularly those with children on the Autism Spectrum or…read morewith complex medical needs. I read the reviews for Westborough Behavioral Healthcare (WBHH) before my 9-year-old son was admitted, but I made the mistake of taking them with a grain of salt. Please do not ignore the warnings. My son was admitted to the Special Needs Unit (SNU), a program that claims to be specialized for neurodevelopmental disorders. Our experience was a clinical nightmare: Clinical Dishonesty & Lying: The attending psychiatrist explicitly lied to me, claiming he had consulted with my son's outside prescriber and that she agreed with a high-risk medication change. When I contacted her myself, I discovered she had NEVER agreed and actually had major clinical objections. Furthermore, I was given conflicting information by nursing staff who initially denied meds were given, only for the doctor to later admit the error in writing. Illegal Medication Administration: After I explicitly withdrew consent for a high-risk psychotropic medication (Geodon) based on the outpatient provider's actual advice, the hospital administered it anyway. The attending physician confirmed this error in writing. My son subsequently developed slurred speech and neurological distress. Severed Communication & Denied Access: The facility consistently failed to facilitate contact with my son. I was repeatedly denied 'Goodnight calls' with my 9-year-old, which is a fundamental right. Furthermore, promised callbacks from the clinical team during crises never happened, and the unit phone lines were frequently diverted to full, non-functional voicemail boxes, leaving me with no way to check on my son's safety after a medical error. Medical Neglect: My son has a documented neurogenic bladder protocol from Boston Children's Hospital. Despite having the records, staff repeatedly failed to implement his toileting plan, citing 'communication breakdowns between shifts.' Lack of Services: While the facility's website advertises speech therapy, the unit staff admitted they do not actually have it. For a child with an IEP and communication struggles, this is a critical failure of care. Deprivation of Safety Tools: They withheld my son's prescribed sensory tools (weighted vest/chewy tools) as 'punishment' for behaviors, which is a violation of trauma-informed care and ASD clinical standards. Unsafe Discharge Tactics: When the facility reached its 'clinical ceiling' and admitted they could not maintain safety without a 1:1 sitter, they attempted to force a discharge home while he was still medically unstable rather than facilitating a lateral transfer to a higher level of care. If your child has ASD, PTSD, or any medical complexity, this is not a safe environment. I have filed formal complaints with the MA Department of Mental Health (DMH) and the Department of Public Health (DPH). Parents: Advocate for a transfer to a tertiary medical-psychiatric unit (like Boston Children's or Bradley/Hasbro) instead of accepting a placement here. Do not let them make your child's safety their liability experiment.
