While not precisely what I was expecting, I enjoyed eating here. I had been craving umeboshi and by extension onigiri, and was happily surprised when I searched for and found an onigiri cart nearby with ume right in its name. I arrived just after 2PM on a Tuesday and was able to walk up and order with no wait. The menu featured "bento" and "plate" meals with a few protein choices along with individual onigiri. I was somewhat dismayed to find few traditional onigiri fillings listed (including ume which I was hoping for). However the fillings available seemed creative and tasty so I ordered a few for now and a few for later: roasted garlic, onion and sweet potato, tuna furikake and spicy pork. I was expecting a smallish, cold rice ball wrapped in nori with a little nibble of filling. What was served was a large rice ball, grilled and warm, with a decent amount of filling. I can't say I was disappointed regardless of it not being quite what I had initially expected. They were tasty, filling, and had good structural integrity despite being large and warm. My review is 3 stars not for the quality or service, but rather because of my perceived mismatch between the name and what was served. If it weren't for that my review would be a 4, because I definitely intend on eating here again. read more

The employees were nice and cheery, which instantaneously lifted my spirits. However, the food....to be rather frank, not so much. I ordered a tuna furikake bento, and it was practically like some greens, canned tuna, half a boiled egg, and rice. Long story short, I just feel like I could have made it myself easily and for a lot cheaper too. . Also didn't help that I found a strand of hair on my food. But yeah, that's it. read more

I used to come here a few years back and the food is good basically and service amenable. However, today a young woman with a long pony tail was so rude and so inconsiderate, I can't even believe she is in the service industry (maybe she's someone's girlfriend??). I walk up and she turns to me and says just a minute while she cleans the window and the counter. Next, I give my order to a person there and said I will be back in a few minutes. I come back and am standing there in the cold and rain while the young woman has her back to me the entire time --not checking to see if if someone is out there in front of the window. Next, I ring the bell and she says, "I will call your name when it is ready." [only no one took my name down.] I do get my order and I told her that she should not keep her back to the front window so long without checking and speaking to customers to let them know she saw them. She said, "I don't need anyone to tell me how to do my job. I do it just fine," in the nastiest, meanest voice. NEVER GOING BACK THERE AGAIN. SHE HAS NO CLUE ABOUT BEING OF SERVICE. I'm giving credit for effort not food quality or portions. You are paying for the location not the food. No, I'm not a snob. I like good food and I have had lots of it here in Eugene. But not at this restaurant. I could take you to a Chinese restaurant within five miles of this place, where instead of finishing all the food tonight we would have eaten our fill and taken home at least one night's worth of leftovers for the same price. The difference in food quality was like the difference between stale bread and a prime rib roast right off the grill. If you're serious about what you eat, keep looking. I've driven past this cart hundreds of times, thinking I needed to try the second incarnation of a truck I really liked in the past. Last night was the night, and I'm wondering what went wrong. We ordered the tofu, tuna furikake and garlic pork bentos. Both the tofu and the pork were absolutely flavorless. The pork was just chewy and bland. The tuna was fine, nothing to write home about. I did really enjoy the nice salads on the side. They were a nice large portion and the pickled cucumber was a great touch. I also liked the sticky rice that came with all the boxes. But the proteins were such disappointments, especially when I read the other recent reviews. read more

Ume Grill Onigiri House sits right on the intersection of Hilyard and East 24th avenue next to Sundial Cafe, Sundance Market and Home on Hilyard. It's a small food cart with many different healthy bento box style options. I ordered the garlic pork bento and my boyfriend ordered the spicy pork bento. Both were cooked well and VERY filling. They give you a large amount of rice, veggies, lettuce and meat to mix all together into once delicious bowl. The spicy pork is definitely spicy to the point where you might be relieved that your food is almost gone but a little sad because it tasted delicious. My garlic pork came with literally 6 whole cloves of cooked garlic which I normally try not to eat but feasted on because I was trying to kick a cold. We both could barely finish our meals and felt satisfied without that heavy feeling you get when eating out. I do wish there was more sauce that came with the bento because the small container barely flavored the large portion of food. I think I might also try the chicken next time because the pork was a bit fatty and hard to eat. The guy working inside the food truck/cart was really helpful answering our questions and cooked our food within 5ish minutes so we were heading home to enjoy our meal in no time and for only 8$ each. I plan to go back and try more options on the menu when I want a filling and healthy lunch (bonus points that it's in my neighborhood). read more

Love this place and frequent it often. If you're looking for Japanese "konbini" style onigiri, you will be disappointed. BUT if you're looking for warm onigiri coated in miso (more izakaya style), then you'll be pleased. I particularly love the onion sweet potato and spicy pork. Would give five stars except they're never actually open at 11 (it's currently 11:45 and I'm still waiting for them to open). Just change the time on your sign to noon! read more

I absolutely love this place! The onion/sweet potato Onigiri is my favorite quick bite by far, although the Miso Butter Salmon plate with salad is amazing! There is a discrepancy, however. At the food cart Grill, the salmon is $12. The on line menu for the Skewer House says $16.95 for the exact same dish. And yesterday I paid $12.95 at the Skewer House...which is it? I'd been craving onigiri for a while, so when I happened upon this truck today I was thrilled! However, what I got was not quite what I'd expected. I ordered the spicy pork onigiri, and when I was handed a fork, I was a little confused (onigiri are usually eaten by hand). I tried to pick it up, and it instantly fell apart, so I resorted to using the fork. This thing had no structural integrity! Clearly, they aren't using the kind of rice traditionally used in onigiri. If you look at it, the grains are a bit longer than Japanese short-grain rice. Normally I try not to harp on things for not being authentic, since it feels disingenuous, but this is a huge issue for me! Further, the rice doesn't taste the same as Japanese rice. It almost tasted more like arancini than onigiri. Like, it tastes alright, but it really wasn't what I have in mind when I think of onigiri. Needless to say, I was a bit disappointed. Probably won't come back here unless they start using stickier rice. read more
