I came with high expectations because of all the raving reviews. When I walked in, I had no idea how this restaurant worked. Walked in, stood there, looked around and wasn't sure if we take a seat, wait to be seated or order first. Turned out, it was the latter. Got the butter/corn miso ramen and the chicken karaage curry. They both came out looking amazing. The broth for the ramen was not boiling hot. In fact the pat of butter did not melt. It took a few minutes of me mixing it around to finally make it melt. The corn was not heated up either. It was room temperature. Overall, the corn and butter ramen taste wise was okay. The chashu needed to be marinated and cooked longer for it to be melt in your mouth. Mine was tough. The only thing that saved my dish was the noodles. They used the thicker wavy noodles, which I enjoyed. The chicken karaage curry came out steaming hot. Quite a contrast to the ramen temperature. The karaage was cooked crisp but needed a wee bit of seasoning. The curry itself had a good taste and it reminded us of a local mom and pop place in Kauai. read more

Ugh really wanted to like this place. Came here on a busy Saturday night and got seated promptly - service is efficient. Inside the restaurant is not huge, but the menu is. The giant pieces of fried meat on top of a bowl of noodles sounds good right? I ordered the King Ramen in this anticipation. Eugene 5 stars! Service is great and food is amazing! You order at the front counter and choose your own seat after. They bring the food out to you and utensils are already on the table. Easy set up and lots of options on the menu from ramen, rice plates, drinks, and appetizers. We got the jajameyoung (black bean noodles), spicy katsu ramen, chicken karaage appetizer, red bean smoothie, and Thai tea. Jajameyoung sauce was very comforting. Savory, umami, and had a good amount of pork. Ramen is also homemade which makes it all the better. The katsu was the star though! Crispy and juicy, 100% would recommend getting something katsu if you are here! The red bean smoothie tasted like a red bean milkshake, which I loved, but it was very icy. A decent place to get Korean and Japanese style food. It was a cold night and we stopped by to get some Japanese Ramen. There were a bunch of choices, but we ordered the kimchi Ramen and the King Ramen. All were pretty good, but I had better since I live in an area that has tons of Ramen places. Looks like a quaint family run ramen shop in downtown Eugene. Pretty large menu board with good variety of ramen choices (plus other Japanese items but no black garlic ramen). Tall ceilings, modern decor, sort of an open kitchen & friendly attentive service. Value-wise, a pretty good deal for ramen when compared to other noodle places. Ramen bowls ranged from $11 to $15 for a large amount of food. We ordered the King ramen (a bowl that included chicken karaage & cha shu pork) in a miso broth. Flavors were OK but the chicken & pork were meh and a bit too much bean sprouts. We also had the pork katsu ramen in shio broth. The pork cutlet was crispy and large, though again, a little too many bean sprouts. For the money, definitely worth a revisit when in downtown Eugene. read more

Looking for ramen in Eugene, OR? I'll shoyu the way... ...to Tokyo Tonkatsu! I was recommended this spot by a friend and finally checked it out last weekend. It's a small mom and pop ramen shop, and they had a handful of ramen and other dishes to choose from. I was pleasantly surprised to find a few Korean dishes on the menu -- tteokbokki, bulgogi, and jajangmeon. I tried their "King Ramen" with shoyu broth. I was impressed by the massive bowl of delicious broth, fresh noodles, and variety of toppings. I highly recommend if you want a little bit of everything because the King was just that! The prices were on par for a bowl of ramen ($14-16), and honestly you get your bang for your buck -- these bowls are loaded.The restaurant is relatively small in and of itself so keep that mind if you have a larger group. You order at the register first, then it's first-come first-serve seating. The service was attentive and kind, despite arriving sorta close to closing time. You get the option to choose your broth and spicy levels making the ramen pretty customizable. The parking is a royal pain, but the taro bubble tea is very good, and I loved the tonkotsu ramen - the mix of pork, ginger, bamboo shoots, egg, ramen noodles, and lemongrass makes for a good tasting ramen. Service is very good, but not a lot of ambiance, and it's a bit small, so it can get crowded quickly. I ordered the katsu-don (tonkatsu donburi)...I was really looking forward to a hot bowl of rice, breaded cutlet with scrambled eggs & onions cooked easy over the top, comfort food. My rice bowl was served quickly, but I was shocked to see how it was served---basically high and dry over 'slightly wet' rice, barely any egg and onion. Seems like some broth was a the bottom of the rice bowl. Usually the scrambled onions & eggs are served over the bowl of rice and then the cutlet placed on top. You should be able to taste the sweetness of the mirin & soy sauce, but not in this case. I guess it was my mistake to order a rice bowl, as most everyone is raving about their ramen on Yelp! and most of the patrons I saw, ordered ramen. So, prices are tempting here. But I'd stay away from their char siu pork, as it tasted more like deli meat, and you got one thin slice in the entire soup... HOWEVER, the pork katsu in the miso ramen broth was on point. The potstickers were okay, I wish it came with more than 4 in one order. It was a bit slow even though there were a lot of folks in the kitchen, but thankfully we weren't in a huge rush. Finally made it here with my mom and daughter. My daughter is a big ramen fan so she was thrilled. I got the Karaage Set to share with her. It included an Original Ramen, Karaage chicken, and rice for $13. We asked for an extra bowl and we easily shared it. My mom got the Tanmen Ramen which came with tofu, broccoli, bean sprouts, carrots, cabbage, and onion. We both opted for the shoyu broth, which was a bit heavy on the black pepper, otherwise, we really enjoyed our food. The Karaage chicken was really good and came with a dipping sauce that tasted sort of like a honey mustard. I also got a mango-green tea bubble tea. It oddly came out after our food came out and I was confused when it looked like a milk tea. The server said it had a non-dairy creamer in it, but I was expecting just a flavored green tea with boba. It was ok in the end, but just not what I thought I was ordering. This is an order-at-the counter place and they bring the food out and bus the tables. We got a nice spot by the window and they had silverware (chopsticks and forks) at the table, but I had to go up to the counter to find napkins. We had a nice experience here and are planning on coming back soon. Every so often I crave an egg in my ramen. I need a ramen with things in the broth that make me happy. Tokyo Tonkatsu fills this need. It isn't much to look at on the inside. It's better than a lunch counter, but just doesn't rock the needle for ambience. You walk in, order at the register from either the printed menu or the large picture menu on the wall. You pay and find a table. The wait isn't all that long. I have tried about 6 of the items. Everything is hot and wonderful when delivered to your table. My usual is the King Ramen, but it's difficult to hold a kitchen sink with chopsticks (kidding)! Metered street parking, reasonable prices. read more

This is by far the best ramen I have ever had. They can make so many things vegetarian which is perfect for me. My bf ordered the spicy shoyu with tofu and I can't even tell you how amazing the tofu was. It was breaded and the best tofu I have ever had. I've always been a huge fan of Tokyo Tonkatsu. Nice sized ramen bowls, excellent Japanese curry, pleasant ambiance. It's a simple shop conveniently located in downtown Eugene and I'm typically able to find street parking fairly easily. Sometimes front of house service is a hit or miss, but today the front of house service really stood out. Very pleasant person with glasses working the register and enjoyable and joyful banter that could be overheard from the back of the house. Always a good experience but this time felt especially warm and homey. I've had ramen all over the place, including multiple locations in Eugene and Tokyo Tonkatsu always knocks it out of the ball park. I recently tried this place for the first time with a friend. It's pretty decent sized, walk up to order. Good sized menu and had quite a few people there. I clearly didn't know anything about the type of food and they weren't helpful with assistance in that, but there's pictures of all the food items on the menu board so if you can pick based off knowledge or pictures, you'll be good.
