I went here yesterday after hiking Mission peak. This restaurant is located across from Ohlone college. I had the Black Garlic Oil Miso ramen. It hit the spot and I enjoyed it very much. I went with the medium spice level which was perfect for me. The presentation was on point like my food. The teas looked delicious and refreshing. I'll try one on my next visit. Umi Tea & Ramen is located in a small plaza on a fairly busy street that may be easily missed, but they are right in front of Ohlone College - their Fremont campus. There is plenty of parking in the back behind the building. It seems like a very quiet plaza, as it is always empty here every time I stop by, but the drink still takes awhile despite being the only customer here. I ordered their Jasmine Green Milk Tea with boba. The milk tea is good for a restaurant - it has a good ratio for cream / milk to tea, so it is not too creamy and the tea is not too strong either. The 4 stars overall is for the boba - I never tried their ramen / food, so this review is solely based on my experience with their milk tea. read more

Short review since I specifically came here for ramen We usually go to the same ramen place, but I looked up ramen on Yelp and noticed UMI! At first we were confusing it with Ume Tea but realized this place was completely different. So far, I've been here twice and both times were great in terms of service and food quality. The workers are very nice and will help answer questions. The only thing I noticed was that they have a pretty small parking lot. The first time we were here, I ordered the black garlic oil miso ramen which also had Chashu pork. My brother ordered the Gyu Beef Miso Ramen and my mom ordered the classic ramen. The garlic oil ramen was really good, but the noodles were all stuck together and the Chashu was hard. The flavor of the broth was super rich and garlicky! The guy need ramen was really good as well and the gyu beef was actually way better than the Chashu. The classic ramen was okay. My mom didn't realize it was a vegetarian broth, so there wasn't much flavor. The 2nd time I can here, I actually got the garlic oil ramen and ask to get the gyu beef instead of the Chashu. It was way more enjoyable but they did charge an extra $2 to sub the meat. Each time I came here, it wasn't very busy but it's rainy season so I'm guessing people just didn't wanna be out. It's actually down the street from Ohlone College so I'm guessing it gets more busy when there's classes. Overall, I really like the garlic oil ramen and specifically with the gyu beef! I thought it was a bit pricey (16.99+tax), considering there was no service at all and you pay beforehand. The ramen was decent and I think it would be a good spot if you want a quick lunch. Review just for the tea. We typically don't go to Umi for food and have been going here primarily for the milk tea. I was needing a little pick me up after work and wanting something a little more standard (green milk tea), and being thwarted by a long line at a different spot, I decided I'd come back to Umi. In short, boba is still great and the milk tea quite tasty and well made. L O C A T I O N There used to be a window on the alleyway where we'd usually order the tea, but now they've boarded that up and just have folks come in through the restaurant. I N S I D E It's not a huge place but sizeable with multiple tables. M E N U They have a variety of drinks, entrees, and snacks. I specifically got the Jasmine Milk Tea which already comes with boba. The prices are pretty on the same level as other places. Sugar level is defaulted at 25% and you can change the level of ice. I typically get no ice. The Jasmine green tea flavor is present and not bitter. The milkiness is lovely. The boba still a good chew. S E R V I C E Easily ordered at the desk and paid with touchless payment. Drinks came out quite quickly. I don't know if they still do a frequent buyer card as I wasn't offered a card and I believe the last time I went I asked and the person who helped me had no clue. They have slightly different ramen really just based on the protein the ramen is topped with. Most ramen places just do the chashu but over here they have a beef, fried chicken, or scallop ramen. I think only the scallop ramen would have a significant flavor change in terms of broth. The gyu ramen is described as a black pepper onion beef but you barely taste the black pepper... It's more like the beef you get in a gyu don or beef rice bowl. The noodles were solid and the broth was tasty. Overall, solid ramen spot. It's a bit pricey for what the is... About $18.5 which is on the higher end. I think the portion could be a lil better for the price. Between you and me, Umi Tea and Ramen feels like it's just you and me at the restaurant - there is little to no service and what little there is seems like it requires a bit of proactiveness from the customer. It was not a great first impression. When you first arrive, hope that there are parking spots available for your car to fit in. This lot is notorious for cars taking up just a tad more than their share rendering the spot next to them unusable. There is also street parking but it's a bit of a walk. The shop is accessed through the small alley and around the corner near the main road, Mission Boulevard. Once you enter, don't expect anyone to greet you or introduce you to their ordering process. You may find a seat/table for you and your party. There are mainly tables for max 4 guests so if you have bigger parties, personally, I'd recommend going elsewhere or just getting drinks and leave. After getting situated, take a picture of the menu or refer to one online via Yelp to figure out what to order. There is surprisingly no menu for a dine in restaurant. Then walk your way up to the register, ring the bell, and wait for the staff member to come and take your order. As for the items on the menu, there's a good spread ranging from appetizers to desserts, ramen, udon, and rice bowls, and milk tea and fruit tea drinks. The food and drinks are decent but rather pricey for the portion and quality. Brown sugar milk tea - looks beautiful and tasted great. The boba had a decent chew and sweetness level was perfect. They default to 25% sweetness and it works for this drink given the brown sugar syrup on the side. I requested no ice but unfortunately they still served my drink with ice. Chicken karaage - fresh and hot, crispy exterior and juicy interior pieces of chicken thigh paired with a sweet and spicy sauce. Delicious! Black garlic ramen - decent black garlic oil flavor, not the strongest but decent. Flavorful soup that's not too salty or rich. Two slices of pork, one half egg, some bamboo shoots, sliced wood ear mushrooms, a small sheet of seaweed, and an abundance of noodles. It's good, but not worth the price point. Shoyu ramen - pretty light broth compared to the pork broth and decent mix of toppings. Pretty much the same ingredients except for the addition of corn. Again, it's good but expensive for what you're getting. Chashu don - small bowl of rice with a good portion of pork. The pork was a bit on the drier side and there wasn't a whole lot of sauce to go with it. A lot of rice makes it good for sharing or a stand-alone meal for one not so hungry person. It's pricey for the portion size and lack of variety in ingredients. After dining, there wasn't much of an interaction with staff. We assumed they would bus the table and left. The atmosphere is quiet and the shop is relatively clean. A few folks seem to be from the nearby college simply sipping their drinks and studying. There is no wifi access here unfortunately. Bathroom wasn't stocked with toilet seat liners and the toilet paper dispenser is very restrictive (I would assume a poor fit for the roll or a method to limit use). However, the single stall bathroom was clean for the most part. Overall, the drinks are average in price (about 6-7 bucks a drink) and the food is astronomically priced for the portion and quality you get. I would skip the food and only get drinks here. Furthermore, given the lack of service, I would also refrain from dining in and simply take your drinks to go. Even then, there are many more competent places here in Fremont that serve great drinks, phenomenal food, exceptional service and all that with fair prices. You won't be missing much if you simply just drove past here. read more

I had planned on visiting this place sooner, but the Pandemic threw a wrench at my plans. I finally had the chance to try it out. You place your order before taking a seat. I selected the Black Garlic Oil Miso Ramen, Crispy Gyoza, and Rose Oolong Tea. The place was near capacity, but I found a table. The Rose Oolong Tea came out first. I've had their Teas before, and their Oolong Teas were their specialty. The Rose flavor was unique. Next came the Gyoza. They were indeed crispy and yummy. Finally came the Ramen. We came here for a big birthday dinner for our friend and his wife reserved the restaurant for 2 hours so we basically had the whole place to ourselves during that time. We had about 20 or so in our group and the restaurant is small yet intimate. We were lucky and got to sit at the table with the birthday boy as all the other seats were taken! We started with 3 appetizers, takoyaki (which is octopus), chicken karaage, and gyoza! All were delish and then we had our main entree, hubby and birthday boy ordered the shoyu ramen, his wife had the black garlic oil miso ramen and I had the Shumi ramen! I got to taste the broth of the black garlic oil miso ramen and it had a good yet unique flavor and I loved my delicious broth! The lady at the kiosk was rude and inconsiderate. I cant rate the food, since i left but she was a horrible person. I went to get some boba and ramen with my family, i have 2 children ages 3 and 5 so i sat them down and went to order. As i got the the lady, she said "can you please order first before you sit down" AS I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF ORDERING!!! Maybe she would have preferred 2 small kids running around annoying the customers, (in hindsight i should have let it happen) i was so insulted i just left. I HAVE NO PLANS OF RETURNING. Overall, the place isn't even that clean its white so you can see all the dirt from lack of wiping or a quick wipe without any effort to actually clean. Was pleased to find out that another ramen place opened in Fremont. This ramen place replaced another ramen place that was initially there, so I was excited to try it out. Parking was easy as there is a parking lot in the back. Wait time was minimal. Service was good -- no complaints. I got the spicy shumi ramen with extra spice and my boyfriend got the black garlic oil miso ramen. I was pleasantly surprised! The broth was very rich and spicy -- just how I like it. Broth wasn't too fatty or heavy, which was nice. I enjoyed the meat too. Was nicely marinated and not too fatty. Egg was salted and soft boiled. Not oozy though. The noodles were average -- nothing too special. I personally liked the spicy shumi ramen way more than the black garlic miso ramen. I felt it had more flavor/ distinct taste and a better kick. The regular spicy shumi is not that spicy (I LOVE spice), so if you truly want spicy, add more spice! Would go here again! I've been dying to try this place for quite some time since it's so close to home. I'm sorry to report this is likely the only time I'll eat here. I totally understand that I shouldn't necessarily base my review off of my vegan ramen since it's not exactly a good indicator of the rest of the restaurant's offerings, so I won't. The brother ordered Spicy Shumi, dad ordered Shumi, Black Garlic, and I had the Kale Shumi. There's a general consensus among the meat eaters that the chashu was bland and was cardboard-y. The broth, not much mouth feel or complex flavor compared to what they've had at other ramen shops. As for myself, I feel like I just ate the obligatory iceberg salad a restaurant throws on the menu just to have greens. The kale noodles (which I'm guessing is vegan because it lacks egg?) was either overcooked or just mushy. The soup was just plain and salty, not much flavor there at all. There were hardly any fixings- 2 little baby carrots that looked like something from the 50 calorie snack pack, some sprinkling of green onions, lots of canned corn, and one sheet of Nori. This came with tomatoes which I omitted. This was hands down the most bland ramen I've ever had. My family agrees we won't be coming back. The ambience was nice and the service was friendly. This replaced Dohatsuten which I used to love. Only a few minutes from my house, I was glad to hear that a new ramen shop opened close by. Unfortunately I had the worst experience...maybe it's because it's the soft opening so they're still getting the recipes right? I had the biggest problem with the broths. We got the shumi ramen (tonkatsu), spicy shumi ramen (spicy tonkatsu), and black garlic oil miso. The tonkatsu broth was so watered down. Bland, watery, and so unsatisfying. (I posted a video as reference). The spicy tonkatsu broth was basically the watery one + what tasted like sriracha. The black garlic oil miso was the most savory...but all three was easily the worst ramen I've had in a very long time. The toppings were standard with thin, mediocre slices of chasu and noodles were nice and chewy. All I can commend this place for is their croquettes and fried chicken appetizers. Pass on the rest (or until management fixes their recipe). read more

Heyyy a new ramen place to replace the old ramen place! Since this is a 5 minute walk from my place, I really hope they do well! Tried this yesterday and can honestly say it's good. Ordered the fried chicken Shumi ramen. The fried chicken on the side was crispy and juicy but it did lack a little bit of flavor. The ramen itself was good, not great as I felt it lacked something as well but I enjoyed it. The ingredients are a bit skimpy though. I think the prices are reasonably fair so we'll see if this place is here to stay! read more

Went with two friends and we ordered three different dishes during the soft opening about two weeks ago. Food: For the fried chicken, we didn't expect to have as much fried chicken as we did. It was well cooked: super crispy on the outside and tender inside. It was amazing when dipped into the soup. For the shumi ramen, it was also really good. The pork was really tasty. The broth used in both ramen dishes was really flavorful which we all enjoyed. For the curry with kale noodles, I wish I ordered rice instead but I was excited to try the kale noodles. The food was well cooked; I just didn't really feel like the noodles were well paired with the curry for my own personal preferences. The tofu was great though. My friend who doesn't really like tofu enjoyed this one a lot. Service: Super friendly and patient servers! Offered water and checked up on us pretty regularly -- granted there weren't many people inside but still it was appreciated. The cook also messed up getting the right noodles prepared so it took longer. But they also only charged $0.75 instead of $1.00 because of the mistake, which was nice. It was the best ramen we've had in a while and we'd definitely come back again. All of it was pretty mid. The service was good though I was the only customer on a weekday afternoon. The Gyu ramen is just okay, not especially good. It's a bit over spiced and overcooked. The broth isn't very flavorful and the meat doesn't have much flavor. Miso soup was another $4.50 on the side which didn't seem worth it. Altogether, an afternoon lunch meal was about $26 for subpar food. You're better off getting actual good ramen at Kitayama down the street or Obaitori in Milpitas. read more

The (taller) waitress did NOTHING and served them!! More then 12 people were standing and waiting, and you dare to seat two line-cutters?!?! We're talking to three other angry parties right now. WTF 2. Waitresses are way to inexperienced. Not knowing how to fully utilize the tables will disqualify any wait staff in the front of the house (e.g. learn to combine tables to accommodate people in line earlier). New ramen shop in the area. I came here with my coworkers last week only to be told that they were closed and only had limited hours during their soft opening. So fast forward and here I am. Just finished my bowl of fried chicken ramen. Their house special is a tonkatsu broth which I love and prefer. The chicken was cooked to perfection. The owner or chef came out with a sauce for me to dip my chicken in. He was telling me how he wanted to serve it as is without the sauce but so many people have been asking for sauce, so he created a light and creamy sauce that complimented the fried chickken quite well. My short interaction with him showed that he wanted to make things absolutely perfect from the food to listening to customer feedback. A regular bowl wasn't enlightened for me so I had to order extra noodles. Which filled me up to a solid full.
