Umpleby's is a great place to have a casual meeting with a friend or just relax with a book. It's a relatively small space that still feels airy, so it has a tendency to get noisy when the room is more than 50% full. Most of the clientele are Dartmouth students and Hanover locals. They have a wide range of offerings--desserts, sandwiches and soups, pies, bread, and beverages like coffee and tea. The meat pies (especially the curry chicken one) are excellent, but make to get them heated up before you chow down. I also enjoy the soups they make everyday and the serving sizes are decent. Service can be a bit slow since they recently made a lot of staffing changes, but they are usually always courteous. It might take a bit to get your food and get an answer to a quick question, but the food and the space are quaint and solid. read more

Umpleby´s is a staple for those needing a quick bite and coffee in Hanover. Forever flooded with students and staff from DC, it´s always an interesting atmosphere and makes for great people watching with a coffee and yummy bite to eat. They also have outdoor seating for those sunnier days. Coffee wise, they have a good range. I wouldn´t call it great coffee, more comfort coffee, not terrible - good to keep you going until you get home and can pull a nice shot of espresso from the home machine. The food is nice, not cheap for what you get but definitely delicious, with excellent vegetarian options. The hummus and avocado (domnique franco?? sp) was very delicious and paired with a hot coffee makes for a great light lunch. I would recommend getting in early for lunch or going afterwards in the afternoon as it packs out quickly. You´ll also find that the service is extremely friendly if a little slow at times, with the odd moment of finding yourself standing at the counter for 5-10 minutes whilst other things are going on to get your order taken, but it has never been an issue as the service again is very friendly and it is a chilled out atmosphere. I usually spend a few hours at a time working on my laptop here and word to wise here, make sure your work does not rely on the internet because it sometimes feels like its on a 28k dial up, so take that in mind if you need access to drive or files etc. Otherwise, a cool spot to chill. read more

We had a family party catered by umplebys and the food blew us away! The sandwiches were fantastic, everyone loved the desserts (especially the chocolate caramel tarts and mini fruit tarts). What a charming cafe. I wasn't going to have lunch here but after walking in for a 'look-see' I decided to stay; I'm glad I did. Though a bit busy and under-staffed, this off-campus bakery/cafe has a terrific selection of baked goods, pastries and sandwiches. I'm always anxious about getting something like a reuben in such a white-bread locale; but it was terrific, perfectly assembled and filling. If I lived in Hanover, this would be my new de facto cafe and lunch spot. I'll be back. Promise. read more

I don't know what other people are complaining about.... I went here for the first time today (originally put off by bad reviews) and really enjoyed my latte and Bertie Wooster sandwich. Based purely on their menu, I don't think they have as much depth in their drink menu as Dirt Cowboy does. But that said, this place isn't try to be a coffee house. Bitter burnt coffee espresso and heaviest non flaky croissant ever....not impressed at all with the quality of products. The place is however spacious and may be ideal for studying ... perhaps get a tea that is harder to mess up... and also what's up with kids these days this college blonde had the biggest defensive attitude ever for a pseudo barista wannabe. I ordered a cortado and if you don't know what it is is simply ask and perhaps learn something new... and use your brain, if a customer orders a cortado would he be likely in need of a drink composition lesson on lattes cappuccinos and macchiattos? By the way in many coffee shops macchiatos are not made with simply foam there is usually enough room to pour a heart art design. While the ambience is better than Starbucks or Dirt Cowboy, Umplebys lags the other two in most ways. Umplebys has a period in the morning where no breakfast or lunch sandwiches are served. The service there is slower and less courteous than its competitors, in my experience. read more

Walked in and tried to order a non-breakfast sandwich at 10:30 and they flat out refused "because they're making breakfast sandwiches right now" and don't serve normal ones til 11. That's the type of bs I'd expect from McDonalds maybe, but for a local place it's ridiculous to turn down business because you can't put turkey and cheese b/t two slices of the same bread you're using for breakfast sandwiches anyway. The lady didn't even check to see if they'd make an exception. I hope they go out of business. Super disappointing, The chicken salad is made up almost entirely of BIG chunks of RAW ONION and raw red pepper- that sandwich alone cost $8.75 w/o tip- way overpriced, even for Hanover. The atmosphere is pretty nice, but very few outlets and the staff is... less than professional. It's too bad because it's a great location with lots of potential. They just don't have much competition (unless you count Starbucks, but this is a town that loves to buy local) and it seems perhaps this has kept their standards pretty low. read more

I had the best cappuccino in my life here. It was strong, rich flavor, foamy, and presented well. The next 3 cappuccinos I ordered disappointed as they resembled burnt lattes. Umpleby's is my favorite café/bakery in Hanover. The space is large enough that I can sit down with a few friends and have a conversation comfortably, I don't have to wait through a line of undergrads to get a table on Saturday morning, and I can always find something tasty (and vegetarian) to eat when I'm hungry. I find their vegetarian sandwiches kind of pricy for what they are, but highly recommend the savory pies, granola with yogurt in the morning, and every pastry I've ever tried. I don't drink coffee, but I do like mild teas, and frequently get the Chaucer's Cup. Finally, they're located across the street from the Hanover town garage, so parking is possible even on the busiest of days. read more

The sandwiches are pretty good here. They're made generously, and the ingredients are fresh and somewhat unusual. Prices are typical. Good selection of old-timey sodas, etc. Avoid their pastries and baked goods, tho. Decor is sort of self-conscious rustic rural New England-y. Maybe a bit precious, but pleasant and comfortable, much better than the typical Upper Valley chain-restaurant style decor. It's a nice place to hang out for lunch. I judge a Bakery by the quality of its croissant and this bakery's croissant tastes like unccoked heavy dough. A few years ago a pleasant little bakery in Norwich made a decent croissant but, unfortunately, they stopped making them. For those of us who've had a good croissant, there is an upper valley demand and we'd be willing to pay a premium. read more

This is one of my favourite places in Hanover but I think that that says more about Hanover than Umpleby's. I think that this place has great potential but isn't quite there yet. The staff always seems kind of angry or at the very least, a bit antisocial. I understand that you have a captive market in Hanover but can you smile please? I waited for two years to eat again at this cafe (because the previous time was very bad) but decided to give it a second chance. I was wrong. The place has become much worse! It took them almost 30 minutes to make a sandwich! They were serving other customers and I was just sitting and waiting. After 20 minutes I asked a young girl if my sandwich was ready? She smiled and said - no! Finally I asked the guy who took my order - where is my sandwich? He went to their kitchen and brought me - not a sandwich but two pieces of toasted bread from which all the vegetables were just falling off onto my plate. The cost for that was almost $8! The guy who brought me the so-called sandwich apologized and even offered me a muffin (why would I want a muffin?) but I didn't get any explanation of why their service is so bad. And it is really bad. I would not recommend this cafe to anyone, ever! read more

Great little cafe with delicious sandwiches. They could really use an overhaul on their order-taking system because it's super slow and inefficient. Sometimes the line goes out the door and it doesn't move quickly. But if I'm not in a rush, this is one of my favorite places to setup shop and work for an afternoon.
