My wife and I eat at Uncle Dan's whenever we are in Waco. The brisket is excellent: very moist and cooked to perfection. Their sauce is great, and their sides are good and fit the menu. We typically get the colesaw and potato salad as sides. The restaurant itself is humble and filled with a lot of memorabilia. Yummmmm!!! I love a laid back bbq place and this one was great. In Waco for the weekend and decided to try Uncle Dan's. The menu is on the wall and you get yourself a cafeteria style tray and slide down to order. I had the pulled pork combo with two sides. They've got plenty of sides to choose from! The pork was delicious and their house sauce is awesome! My husband had brisket and ribs and had no problems cleaning his plate. Used Uncle Dan's for a rehearsal dinner in Waco, what a great job. We met with Gregg first and he help plan the food and let us taste what we where interested in. Then got a call from Dan the day before to make sure we were all good to go. Night of the event they showed up on time, great interaction with the guests, Food was presented fabulously, served us then quickly cleaned up so we could continue the party. Kinda disappointed. Saw the five star rating and thought we would give it a shot. Not so good. Had the sampler plate to get a true feel of what Uncle Dan's was all about. Moist cut brisket was tender but lacked the smoky flavor. Same was true for the pork rib. Jalapeno sausage was eh. Turkey had good flavor and smokiness but was dry. Saving grace for Uncle Dan's was the mac and cheese and the service. Fast service and courteous staff. Can't recommend it but if you really need bbq its ok. And if you don't like eggs in your tuna fish salad, you wont like their's. read more

Having not been inside of Uncle Dan's since before Covid, I was excited to come back. I ordered the Tour of Texas and even though the price went up since last, I expected it and was happy to pay for some good local BBQ. But... I was let down. The person cutting my meat was not in a happy mood (putting it nicely) and the portions were very VERY small. I know I'm a fat man, but these were very small portions. I got 2 very thin ribs, 4 slices of sausage, and 2 slices of brisket. the Mac n cheese wasn't bad but it was cold and the beans I swear used to be home made. These... We're canned. I want to say that this was a fluke, but from what I am hearing, this is how it has been lately. Sad because people told me to stay away from Uncle Dan's and that the BBQ was terrible... I defended this place and was always telling friends how much bang for the buck this place was. Both with taste and price. I hope I can say this again soon. read more

First time customers trying to find good BBQ in Waco Texas! When we first walked in we were greeted by two different individuals giving us menu pointers. We were excited thinking this place was going to be amazing. Well let's just say we will keep looking, because this is definitely not the spot!!!! Food was JUST OKAY! BBQ sauce was horrible and overbearing! We got the Uncle Dan's TX Tater and it was so drenched in BBQ we could barely taste anything else. We also ordered the Texas tour. Very small portions for the price. Looked like meat scraps were just thrown in the Togo box. Sliced brisket looked shredded as If it was ripped off the main brisket slab. The employees behind the counter ruined our first experience. Very rude and unwelcoming definitely not your typical Texas greeting. I do not recommend this place to anybody nor will I ever return in the near future. read more

Very disappointed in the food and service. The brisket was cold and sauce was terrible. The bread was wonder bread from the grocery store and the beans tasted like pork n beans out of a can. Was not impressed by any means. Ordered the sliced brisket plate ( which tasted very greasy and no flavor) and was very disappointing. The meat was probably 4 oz. The fries had no seasoning and the mac n cheese was very bland. After reading several positive reviews I decided to stop and try this place on the way home instead of my wife's suggestion of Rudy's. Summary of review: shoulda listened to her. I'm not a huge fan of cafeteria style restaurants. The plates are small and shallow and the portions matched the dinky plates. Besides a BBQ joint that doesn't have a pot of beans for you to help yourself isn't worthy to be a BBQ joint in Texas. My wife and son tried the chicken and brisket, while I tried the smoke ribs, brisket and sausage. Sides were mustard potato salad & beans. (don't get me started again.) the wife's brisket was dried and flavorless. My brisket was a little better but lacked a true smoke flavor in spite of a decent smoke ring in the meat. The ribs didn't have much meat in them and flavor-wise, nothing to get excited about. My son didn't even finish the chicken. (enough said.. he loves "barkyque".) Also at just over $30 bucks for 2 adults and one 5 yr old is very high considering the quality and that is with no dessert. I wonder how this place for so many good reviews? Maybe we just got them in a bad day or folks expectations are different than mine. For brisket I compare it to Louie Mueller's or Big Jakes. (In Texarkana) both are phenomenal...Either way, we will not be back and spend another 30 dollars at Uncle Dans. The sauce here is pretty good and they have good peppers, however I need more than that to rate this place more than 3 stars. Average tasting expensive food. read more

Like all good barbecue joints, Uncle Dan's is firmly rooted in decades past: the flat roof, the tiled ceiling, the cafeteria line, the wood paneling, and last but not least, the autographed photographs. And all this despite having relocated and remodeled in the 1990s. Oh wait, that was almost two decades ago. On the front door, they advertise a concealed handgun class that meets there on Saturdays, and I'm sure it's not just for effect, though I certainly enjoyed it. We went at an off hour and had to order from the takeout line, so my sliced brisket wasn't piping hot. However, it's the best I've had in Waco, and the coleslaw and potato salad were fine complements. I was hoping the hot barbecue sauce would be hotter, but it good nonetheless and on the side, just as I like it. read more

I grew up in Waco, and whenever I come to visit, there are three places I must eat: Uncle Dan's, Schmaltz's, and Ninfa's. Uncle Dan's is awesome, the staff is friendly, and the sauce is amazing. My personal favorite is the turkey sandwich with a side of chili beans. The Texas Tater is also incredible. For anyone considering going to Rudy's, go to Uncle Dan's instead and support one of Waco's greatest local businesses. read more

As soon as my son and I walked in ( after a hot morning at the zoo) we were greeted my a really nice man. He asked where we were from, how we liked the zoo, if it was our first time here ( yes) then introduced himself as Uncle Dan! :) He was so nice, like a family member and made us feel really welcome. He piled the meat on our plates. The brisket was really, really good and the sausage, according to my son, was the best he'd ever had. On a road trip from Dallas to San Antonio, we found ourselves hungry around Waco. We yelped to find some vittles, and found Uncle Dan's reviews. We stopped, ate, enjoyed, and we'll be back next time we're making this trip. Service was wonderful, and the food was even better. The jalepeno sausage was awesome, neither too spicy nor too greasy. The chili beans were a big hit, better than the green beans. The chopped brisket with fresh dinner rolls was excellent as well. We opted for the spicy BBQ sauce, and we'd do so again..great sauce! the yellow potato salad was perfect, with the right amount of mustard and pickles to give it a zingy flavor. Perhaps Uncle Dan would consider moving to San Antonio? We can dream, I guess. read more

We came as a result of yelp reviews. We were not disappointed . The food tasted great. Negatives: they ran out of ribs; but obviously they must be delicious since there were none left by 7 pm on a Wednesday night. Napkin holder is in the shape of a small smoker grill; complete with an interior grate. Overall the ambiance is a bit tired and dated, but for $ the value and the food is wonderful. I've been going to Uncle Dan's since the 1970's and it's just as good today as it was then! Their chopped BBQ stuffed potato is really good when I'm eating there, but my favorite thing to do is get a pound of sliced 'to-go' with mustard potato salad and pea salad. You can get really good BBQ all across Texas, but most places are getting their sides out of huge buckets from Sysco these days... not Uncle Dan''s ... it's the real deal! read more
