Had a group event for my daughter's 18th birthday party yesterday. The bad: Was told when I arrived to restaurant, the event didn't start until 6:30pm. The event time was from 6-8pm. No dedicated server/host for our event- restaurant understaffed. Tables were not ready (no place setting, not enough chairs) Fajitas were supposed to be served family style but came out as individual plates instead Fajitas did not come out sizzling, appeared to have been sitting around; temperature lukewarm Chicken was very bland and tasteless; no flavor Tortillas didn't come out with fajitas at the same time; it took at 10 minutes and guests waited for tortillas so food was getting colder by the minute Churros arrived very, very late over 30 minutes after event ended. I had to remind the manager and the server to bring it out. When it was being expedited it went to another table instead of ours. The ratio of churros to the group was inadequate. Manager was very nice but overwhelmed with lack of staffing, inexperienced servers, takeout orders, high volume of dining Didn't sing happy birthday The good: Accommodated the request for guac (no tomatoes) and vegetarian fajitas Manager and server were professional and personable Chips, guac, queso, beef tasted very good Bottom line: Poorly executed No dedicated servers to our event Overwhelmed and confused staff If a business is unable to accommodate events, it's best to not make it available. Consistently the worst restaurant in Montgomery County. A once great restaurant has fallen completely down the drain. Uncle Julio's has really gone down hill. We used to love coming here as a family, but slowly they have changed things for the worse. You now pay an extra $10 for your rice and beans and the rice has been totally changed and not in a good way the taste is really lacking. The tortillas have now changed also and taste like store bought ones. I came into the restaurant and waited for the host/hostess and no one came, eventually someone came over to the host station and said "hello" but was muffled at the time due to his mask so i said "pardon?" and then he proceeded to say "ni hao" AND "Kon'nichiwa" in an Asian accent and I didn't realize what he said until I sat down at the booth. Im filipino and was not wearing anything indicating im Chinese OR Japanese so what this man said is beyond me.. please don't come here and give these racists your money. Never coming back AGAIN ! Ordered the family taco meal for 4 online. Wish the $5 off coupon has been applied automatically rather than only being mentioned if you call to get it. Also did not see a place to leave tip at checkout and payment. Would have liked to have tipped. I don't carry cash. It was unclear that there was a separate phone number for curbside delivery. There is a sign out front that you'd have to be looking for to know this. No one answered the main number. I got out of one of the pick up spots designated out front and went to the door. The wait staff went and got my order immediately. Pleasant guy. A text confirmed order was ready. Lots of food. Much more economical than individual orders. Tasted average. I've always had issues picking up orders to-go here so I decided to phone my order ahead rather than use the Uber Eats/Grubhub/Doordash pick up option. I ordered the Family Enchilada dinner which is $40 for 8 enchiladas, beans, rice, chips, and salsa. On Uncle Julio's website you can mix and match the 8 enchiladas so I told the person on the phone I wanted 3 chicken, 3 beef, and 2 cheese. I let her know we have someone in the family who doesn't eat meat so please separate the cheese enchiladas. Once I arrived, I waited 5-7 minutes for the food to be brought out which was actually remarkable compared to the previous attempts I've made. I grabbed the bag of food and made my way back home. Once home I opened the aluminum tray to discover they had prepared all the enchiladas together. Of course they were not labeled so I had to cut into each of them with a knife to determine what's what. I noticed they put the two cheese ones on the end so that was kind of nice of them...well...until we cut into them and realized it was just a FROZEN block of cheese inside the enchiladas. Now, I don't know what happened but I assume they cut out a hunk of cheese, wrapped it in tortilla, and threw it in the oven. Because they were cooking the meat ones at the same time they must have pulled it out of the oven too early. This resulted in an unmelted cheese string-like substance. We were literally able to pull the cheese block out as one piece. Rather than go back and wait another 30+ minutes for the issue to be corrected we just microwaved the cheese and rigged it back into the tortilla. Everything was room temperature at best after getting home, keeping in mind I live under 2 miles from the Bethesda Row location. read more

The food is pretty good but it is overpriced. The quality is good and the service professional but it's a chain and it feels like one. So many options nearby that are more affordable with imaginative chefs with staff that is less robotic and more focused on pleasing me. Bethesda has options now and no offense to those that enjoy it and it's a good family meeting place that's an easy pick . I just prefer other options. read more

Came here to celebrate my daughter's graduation. I really could have taken her to a local Baltimore area Mexican restaurant and enjoyed the same or better meal AND not driven out of my way to Bethesda on a rainy day for this okay meal. Parking is tight in this area, but there are parking garages in the area that are reasonably priced and a short walk to the restaurant. As we entered, the place was somewhat dark and not as festive as I thought a Mexican restaurant would be. Maybe it was the rainy afternoon sky.....We were greeted by a pleasant host and seated immediately. We were given on the house tortilla chips and salsa, which were okay. We ordered the nacho cheese dip, which was tasty also. For our entrees, we ordered the chicken quesadillas, fish tacos, shrimp tacos, and a chicken dish which I have forgotten the name of and a kid's taco entree. We also ordered a strawberry daiquiri and a spirited beverage that was made with orange juice. The meals were just okay for us. Typical of Mexican meals you can get at any decent Mexican restaurant. The drinks were tasty and enjoyable. The only thing that saved our visit was the dessert pinata. It arrived on a large wooden serving dish with dollops of whipped cream, raspberry sauce and chocolate drizzle as garnishes to the hanging domed chocolate shell that once cracked open, spilled its contents of fresh fruit and mini churros onto the wooden serving dish. Stopped by Bethesda location, because husband felt like having a Mexican meal. Sorry to say, but it was mediocre at best. I asked for a slice of lemon for my water - never got it. I ordered grilled vegetables fajitas. I was given taco size tortillas, when I pointed out to the server that fajitas usually are best served with 6 inch ones, she insisted that's how they do it here. As to the grilled "vegetables" - 80% were just onions. Literally 4 strips of pepper, 3 pieces of mushrooms, and maybe 5 strips of zucchini for $20.00 Very disappointed. I would like to preface this review by saying I give immense credit and respect to those that can cook authentic Hispanic food. Over time, it has become my favorite type of food. I was really excited to try this restaurant, especially because of the 4 star review on Google. With that being said, why does it have that many stars?? I paid $50 for the two blandest quesadillas I've ever had. I've traveled across the U.S and always try a Mexican restaurant, and it's unfortunate a restaurant in my home disappointed so drastically. After we sent back the third one, the manager came over and explained that they add simple sugar to their lime juice. I would do 3,5 stars. Uncle Julio's is usually in a prime location, like this branch in downtown Bethesda. It is the kind of place that would hustle and bustle during the holidays or the weekend, where you would go in with a large group to have comfort food. Who doesn't love Tex-Mex, munching on some chips and restaurant style salsa over a few house margaritas before getting a few of the classics? In that UJ would not disappoint. I would actually argue that this is at least a consistent, distant cousin of the lower price point chains like On the Border, Chevy's, and may be Chili's to a lesser degree. Last time we were there I noticed some upgrades to their inside decor, which is tasteful. Service is usually reasonably fast and attentive, too. It is just the price point vs. food that you get that keeps me from a higher score. You are essentially paying for comfort food in a good location. read more

This place used to be my go-to Fajita place for last 15 years (even before it moved from another street). Not anymore. The fajita beef was so gummy that I cannot chew and swallow. I felt like chewing rubber bands. Do I need to order sirloin beef (yes, they offer that option) to get the same quality beef that they used to serve? I typically skip rice so I can eat the other carbs - glad I didn't here. No mushy tasteless beans, no mushy flavorless rice here! The entree--again, I was expecting typical fajitas flavor and medium shrimp skimpily wrapped in bacon seasoned with Adobo with bits of jalapeños stuffed in...NOPE! OH MY GREATNESS!!! The shrimp were huge and cooked to perfection and the bacon wrapped around was equally perfect (how they do that?¿? typically bacon wrapped seafood isn't executed well - they did it)! AND the jalapeño in the middle...MOUTH MELT SO GOOD!!! I couldn't finish everything so I packed it all up and home it came! Including the butter and salsa !!! I NEVER take home condiments - but never say never! I was still so excited when I got home, I made my son & his fiancé try the salsa & yup the butter (lol although no longer warm & frothy) and they were impressed too. At first - um Mom it's just Mexican---then came the WOW, where's this place, what's the name again. My soon to be daughter in law, is an island girl and she was the one that did the most inquiring on. I'm so coming back, Israel (I believe that's the name of the manager I met) - I'm eyeing the chocolate piñata. Yum! The food and ambiance at Uncle Julio's is always great! This Uncle Julio's restaurant, which is located in downtown Bethesda, MD (Bethesda Row) is the third I've been to - I've also been to the Reston, VA and Gaithersburg, MD locations. I really loved the decor at this location and the service was excellent. The food was mostly good as well, but the guacamole was brown!! Very disappointing :'( other than that, the rest of the food was pretty decent. Even the tortilla chips and salsa were excellent, as always. We each ordered the Fajitas (I got steak), which came with rice, beans, guacamole, cheese, sour cream, pico de gallo, and tortillas. Pretty delicious meal, but again, that guacamole was brownish and disappointing. I've only been to this location once so I'll definitely have to visit again and hopefully have a better experience next time! read more

I had this fantasy that due to COVID restaurants and businesses would up their customer service and appreciate us while we were done. Boy was I wrong. We ordered about $300+ in take out directly from uncle Julio's and left a $40 tip. After a 30 min roundtrip I got home and unboxed everything to find the margarita mix/kit for 10 was missing. I called to get a refund but couldn't get anyone on the phone. So I leave and head out on another roundtrip. Tell them they missed part of my order. Not a sorry, a oops we messed up, a here are some free chips or even better this missed piece is on us. Even the manager who carried my first order saw me there and didn't say a word. The tables indoors were spread out far enough to feel safe and the wait staff were incredible. Come for the food, not the drinks. Went to Uncle Julio's last night to celebrate a friend's birthday. We made reservations before hand for 5 but the restaurant wasn't too busy on a Tuesday night at 6:30pm, so reservations weren't necessary. The tortilla chips and salsa that was brought out to the table as something to munch on was addicting! The chips were super thin and lightly salted...just how I like them. The salsa wasn't too spicy, but did have that kick to it. Watch out when you eat these or else you'll end up having no room for dinner! We got seated at 6:25pm, just in time to order a drink off their happy hour menu. On the recommendation of the server, I had the Swirl, their signature drink. I believe it was 2 parts frozen margarita to 1 part frozen sangria. The drink was okay, didn't blow me away. Was too sweet for me and didn't have much alcohol in it (I know, I know...why didn't I order a margarita on the rocks then?!). I'm glad I paid the $6 happy hour price instead of the regular $8.25. For dinner I ordered Guadalajara. For a little over $20 I got 3 grilled jumbo shrimp brochette wrapped with bacon, a jalapeno, beef fajitas, rice, beans, pico de gallo, guacamole, and flour tortillas. Delicious! Although the menu stated that the shrimp was stuffed with Monterey Jack cheese, I didn't taste it. Regardless of that, the shrimp was soooooooooooo tasty! Dip it in the butter and lemon that was on the side and it melted in your mouth. The steak was very tender and had great flavor to eat. The flour tortillas were yum yum yum...I love homemade tortillas! This meal was definitely large enough to share with someone, especially if you eat a good amount of chips/salsa or have an appetizer to share. I definitely recommend this dish! I would have gave Uncle Julio's 3 stars because their drinks were not too great, but they earned an additional star for letting us bring our own birthday cake in. Although the hostess almost screwed up our surprise by asking us loudly if this was a birthday cake (hello, is this not what we just whispered to you?!) and if it needed to be refrigerated, our server brought out the cake with the candles lit after our dinner. Rio Grande is my favorite restaurant in the US. It is incredible. I recommend the steak soft taco dinner which comes with two delicious tacos filled with steak that has been seasoned and cooked not too much and just perfectly, a combination of cheddar and American cheese, tomatoes, and lettuce with rice and beans soup on the side. Make sure to also get the guacamole and pico de gallo to go inside the tacos to really make them burst with flavor! A few Swirl drinks (frozen margarita and sangria swirled together) brings everything together amazingly! The restaurant itself is really noisy since there isn't any carpeting. I like sitting outside or to the right when you first walk into the restaurant. I have had several wrong orders as they keep bringing me ground beef instead of steak but I keep going back since it is THAT good! read more

It looks very much like a Mexican restaurant from the outside so you can't miss it. The inside is HUGE and great for groups and they have a great happy hour. My colleagues all rated this place 4 stars, but I am going to give it a three star rating only because it tastes like your average Mexican restaurant. Nothing amazing, but definitely not bad. I ordered the shrimp tacos and the server was more than willing to sub out the corn tortillas for flour ones (Winning!). It was good, but nothing to write home about. Normally, this is a wonderful location, but not sure what happened today. The service left much to be desired, as my wife and I were referred to "guys" every single sentence the young man used. Even when it was definitely inappropriate to use it. There was a 10 minute wait for the tableside guacamole, and the waiter tried to discourage us from getting it. On receiving the food, we were horrified to see the amount of grease dripping from the tacos, and the fish tacos which had burned fish on the outside and soft mushy fish on the inside.... Just moved to the DMV last summer from the Midwest. There is a definite dearth of good Tex Mex in this area. Until we found Uncle Julio's. Remembered it from Chicago and decided to try it out. We were not disappointed. And new we picked a winner when we saw how many Latinos were there. Few weeks ago we decided to order our due to the pandemic. We scheduled the pickup for about 90 minutes from when we ordered. When we got there it was chaos. People were waiting as long as 90 minutes to get the food they ordered. There appeared to be one guy trying to fulfill all of the requests from people as well as delivery services (In hindsight I think they were either grossly understaffed or completely underestimated demand). We waited about 45 minutes to get ours. But it was worth the wait. Great enchilada's and fantastic queso Just what the doctor ordered. Just last night, we tried it again. Ordered ahead by 2-3 hours. When we got there it was significantly better organized. Didn't wait AT ALL to get our food. And just like last time, it was killer. It has quickly become our favorite Mexican restaurant. I love Uncle Julio's but THIS particular location has weak drinks (even the Jefe - their strongest drinks limited to 2 per customer). Ordered a Watermelon Margarita too and it didn't even look like the photo. Good service. I've never had a jalapeño that wasn't spicy raw...until I came here. What a bummer. It tasted like a bell pepper. Won't be coming here again. It's a shame because there are two near where I live that are absolutely amazing. Too bad. This location is too nice to be sub par to their location again. After ordering the food, I would say it was on par with other Uncle Julio's locations, which is real good. After complaining about the Jefe the other Jefe was more on par with what I expected. The Jefe is supposed to be a real strong drink. It's limit is 2 because if you had two Jefes done right, you would be ultra buzzed, a third one would ruin your day. Lol. So overall this location is alright, but does not stand up to the other locations. Others I would give 4 stars to, maybe 5. Hope this helps. read more

I cam for my friends birthday and ordered chicken tacos, they came with rice and beans, the beans contain pork which I can not eat luckily I asked the waiter before consuming and they quickly replaced my beans and pork with regular black bean. The tacos were quite good though it didn't come with any sauce unless you paid extra. I enjoyed the complimentary chips and salsa. Our waitress failed to tell my friends that the sauces costed extra and they didn't figure out until the bill had come unfortunately. My friend and I decided to make reservations for us at Uncle Julio's (she said that she was doing for me because I like Mexican food--like she doesn't :/). We had two servers (not sure why because it was just the two of us at our table) and the service wasn't fast. My friend wanted to try that drink with the nitrogen but we wanted to see it made first so we told one of our servers that we'll think about once we see it made. In the meanwhile, we got chips and salsa--we had to ask for another batch of chips because the first batch was super greasy (like you could see the greasy glistening and I could feel my arteries clogging). For our entrees, my friend ordered the chicken and steak fajitas and I ordered the Juarez (pork ribs with chicken and steak). We didn't care for the steak but we both loved the pork ribs. Also, we both were expecting the fajitas to come out sizzling but they didn't. I will say that the metal plate was hot but wished it came out sizzling. For dessert, my friend heard about their chocolate piñata and wanted to give it a try. We asked about the piñata and was told that they make the molds the night before but the churros and fruit are prepared when the order is placed. Well, we had waited for 1/2 hour wondering why it was taking so long (we were yawning and almost fell asleep on the table. Our servers came out and told us that our piñata orders were being taken by other servers so they comped us (normally, it costs $25 for the piñata). The service wasn't the greatest and was slow. By the time we were able to see the see the drink with the nitrogen being made for another table, we were almost done with our meal and didn't want a drink. One of ours servers seemed annoyed that we no longer wanted the drink--oh well. Overall, I didn't think the food was anything to write home about. I think this place is probably good for happy hour and that's about it. P.S. The chocolate piñata was cool--the caramel sauce was delicious and so was the fruit and churros. Terrible customer service. I've eaten here several times trying to help the local business, but they make it difficult. Yesterday I tried to order take out from the bar. I waited for about 10 minutes before I finally walked away. The bartender never came out and the host said they could not order for me. Today, my wife tried to call in an order. She could not get the restaurant to answer the phone despite waiting more than five minutes on two separate attempts. We just ordered a takeout steak fajita platter for the family and it was delicious. I was impressed with how organized the pickup routine was for curbside, and I like how attentive the staff are. They saw our request for extra tortillas and they made sure our order was fulfilled properly. My only suggestion is that the meat could have been cooked at little bit more, since it appeared more rare than what we usually receive at the restaurant, but it did not take away from our delightful meal. We had plenty of chips and salsa to share, and the portions as always were very generous. When I got at the front door, was not a good welcoming. To started, my silverware was dirty, as well as the napkin Then I order a order of wrapped shrimps with bacon, not good, microwaved. Just warm, not crispy. Erick did a good service Beef fajitas were just ok. I have a girl bartender, Erick left for a break, I'm not been offered anything, not refill, nor another drink, Not even a dessert. Not sure if I will comeback, btw Happy hour sucks, not food.
