I consider Uncle Momo, this wonderful cozy quaint French-Lebanese bistro located at 289 Grove Street in Jersey City, my go-to restaurant when my friends come to visit. Each time the experience gets better, if that's possible. My good friend Terry and I shared a lamb tajine dish (with apricots and prunes) and hummus and an arugula salad appetizers. DELISH! I can't believe I've lived in JC all my life and just now tried this spot. I've heard good things but I just finally decided to try it since it was convenient to get to and open later than other restaurants. The interior was nice and rustic. I like the little lights all over. It was very cozy. We only had to wait a few minutes. Surprisingly because it was busy and the tables are closely packed. The staff were very nice and tried their best to be on top of things. We tried the baba ghanoush served with pita and it was flavorful. I love the pita. It was very soft! I don't really like the ones with burnt spots. For our entrees we got the chicken shish kebab and lamb shish kebab. We also ordered a lentil soup. It was my first time trying lentil soup and I'm obsessed! It had a bit of a sweet taste that I liked. I also like that it was more pureed. We both enjoyed the shish kebabs but agreed the portions could be bigger. We've been to other spots that had way more bang for your buck with portion size. Overall I had a good experience! read more

A surprising (early) reunion with friend in high school, and also my first time eating Lebanese cuisine. It was such a wonderful coincidence that we were both traveling in New York City area, and both staying in Jersey City! LAMB TAJINE: To be honest, it's very similar to the lamb leg in Xinjiang-style pilaf. I'd only ever had Moroccan tagine before, and this one was comparingly less seasoned, with less emphasis on spices or sauces, highlighting the natural flavor of the lamb. The lamb leg was in quite a big portion, stewed until tender and easily falling off the bone. The dried apricots and dates provided a mellow and rich aroma, combining with the saltiness and lamb fat to create a subtle sweetness--just right. After two hours of standing in the wind by the Hudson River on a cold, rainy winter day, this dish was truly comfort food. GRILLED OCTOPUS: The octopus was fresh and firm in texture, grilled and then dipped into sour cream. The sourness was very pronounced, so it's best to use it sparingly, otherwise it might mask the octopus's natural sweetness. BABAGANOUSH: Reputedly a classic appetizer from the Levant. The roasted eggplant had a rich smoky flavor, and when mashed, it became even softer, smoother, and more delicate. Lemon juice added a bright, fruity acidity, while olive oil provides a subtle, refreshing base, creating a harmonious and layered flavor profile. Tearing apart a thin piece of freshly baked pita bread and dip it in the mixture, the aroma of roasted wheat complements the smoky flavor, and the chewy crust pairs perfectly with the smooth texture. It was a delicious and appetizing appetizer, but it should be eaten quickly, as the pita bread becomes dry and hard once it cools down. MOUSSAKA VEGGIE: I only realized I forgot to take a picture after I finished eating... This stew, made with eggplant, tomatoes, and chickpeas, was unimaginably served cold. The olive oil flavor was also strong, but it felt like the natural flavors of the three ingredients were overwhelmed by the oil. There's a Chinese saying, "One good heat beats three seasonings," which is especially true for stews; I'm not accustomed to this way of serving. VIRGIN MOJITO / STRAWBERRY: A very refreshing drink. Came here for an impromptu birthday brunch with my fianceé during a weekday afternoon. Was pretty quiet, so we got seated fast without any issue. Because it was around 12:15 or so, we opted for the brunch menu instead of the traditional lunch. Me personally, I got the Momo's Toast, which was their version of avocado toast. I got the eggs more well done instead of runny, which helped. Otherwise, the meal was good and it wasn't super heavy. The mixed greens complemented the potatoes that were provided. We got a little extra chili oil as a kick, which was perfect for us. We did try the Turkish coffee, though admittingly it was a bit too strong for me. Would have loved to give it a 5 star but service just killed it for me. The staff wasn't attentive, argued right next to us on who is the boss and then argued with us as a customer on an error on their menu pricing. Pretty bummed out to write this review because Uncle Momo used to be a go-to favorite in the seven years we've lived here. Tonight we had a terrible experience, not because mistakes were made, but because of the completely unapologetic manner in which those mistakes were handled. Things that happened in this dinner: -Sat a very, very long time without service -Scalding hot pizza handed to child without warning -Twice other people's food brought to the table incorrectly -Waited a very, very long time for food and had to inquire a couple of times, including asking about the pizza that had been ordered -Food arrives, pizza had been inexplicably forgotten -We ate our food while one party had to wait another 15 minutes for their pizza -Crepe burnt and unappetizing -Substitution of spinach for mixed grilled veg was just cut up carrots and cucumber like what would be in a child's lunchbox (we paid for the sub) After a complaint to one of the random people ineffectually servicing our table, free desserts were offered. Serious health constraints in the party, so we could not accept desserts. This person goes to talk to the manager. Someone identifying himself as the manager comes to the table with the full bill and no apologies for the truly lackluster service. He eventually says he removed the 20% gratuity that they usually automatically add for parties of five. He "removed"' something he thought we weren't going to leave anyways - feels like a cheap way out. We paid the bill in full. Left small tip for server who clearly hadn't been trained properly. Will not return as we're going more judicious stewards of where we spend our money moving forward. read more

I had been looking forward to coming here with my family for awhile. We finally dropped in for brunch. We were told we only had one hour before the next party, which was fine because we were with our toddler, so quicker the better. We proceeded to sit for 15 minutes with no one coming to our table, except to ask us to move our stroller. We commented to that waitress we were ready to order whenever someone could take it - the waiter came 5 minutes later, just to take the order of the table next to us instead, who sat after us. Eventually, with less than 30 minutes before we had to be out of our table, without even a hello from a waiter, we left. I get being busy, but rushing us to hurry to then just completely ignore us, without so much as a "sorry" after we opted to leave is just not an acceptable business practice. Everything from the mouthwatering menu to the cozy vibes to the kind staff made this a great visit. It's been years since my last visit to Uncle Momo's and I am so happy they are back on my radar. Fluffy pita, a plethora of delicious dips and several lamb options on the menu made this a very good stop for dinner. I really love the French bistro look and feel of the space. It was cozy and quaint but still casual. Looking around the space and even at the menu, I wasn't sure what kind of restaurant this was. The menu looked super Greek, Moroccan or Israeli to me, but after a quick peak around I found out it was French Lebanese. We started with the beet moutabel dip and the labne, both were really wonderful. The beet dip was sweet and was a perfect pairing with the tangy and creamy labne, which if you've never had is basically just a tangier Greek yogurt. For my entree I got the lamb tajine and am so happy I did. The meat was fall off the bone soft and the soft cooked dates and apricots were a really delicious added sweetness to the meal. I could barely make it through half of the meal before I needed to call it quits and get a box to take the rest home. I also tried a bit of the makanek which was so interesting! It was basically a plate of small cured sausages over a bed of hummus. The sausages were like little mini loukanikos for any of my Greek foodie friends. Very tasty, but I'd need a little more variety in my entree ideally. And lastly dessert! I got a mint tea and a creme brulee and both hit the spot. Even though I had a reservation for 6 and specified outside they didn't have a table ready. They put it together rather quickly though. Sitting outside was nice, quiet and there was a guitar player singing music on the Friday evening we came. It wasn't too loud, it was nice background music. I ordered the mix grill. It was just okay. The sausage was way too spicy, they should warn you on the menu. Also very small and skinny. The chicken kebab was juicy though the flavor was just okay. The lamb kebab was fine. The lamb chops were scrawny. One didn't even have the bone and was room temperature. It was all over jasmine rice with a tomato sauce that tasted like ketchup to me. I wouldn't order it again. My husband liked his veggie moussaka but it had way too many chickpeas in it. And also didn't really taste like a moussaka that I'm used to, the more Greek version. It's byob and the waitress was really nice opening the bottles and brining the glassware. The owner checked in on us too. Service and atmosphere were good but I wasn't crazy about the food so probably wouldn't return. read more

I've been to uncle momos a couple of times for dinner and enjoyed it. This was my first time there for brunch and it was so delicious. The baklava latte was a drinkable dessert. I also ordered the momos breakfast and I don't know what they put in the scrambled eggs but they were the best eggs I've ever had. The whole dish was amazing. My friends fell in love with the mango drink they serve. Looked like a mango smoothie, perfect for the summer heat. The service was also very good, and lots of outdoor seating. We stumbled across this place while walking around Jersey City. The smell stood out to us. I got: - baklava latte: I like lattes and baklava. This totally intrigued me and I'm glad I ordered it. It's a nice, slightly sweet latte with pistachio crumbs sprinkled on it. 5/5 - Momo breakfast: this is a nice variety of their apps served on a single plate. A good first dish to try at restaurant, so you figure out what you like. I loved the fried egg, hummus and the cream. 4/5 - lamb tajine: while the lamb was nice, I was expecting a bigger the portion size for the price ($30ish). Came in on a Sat afternoon, got seated pretty quickly. It did took them quite a while to prepare the dishes. Seeing us sitting idly for over half hour, they gave us 2 appetisers on the house, which is very nice of them. We are able to just chill and chatted for hours without the staff attempting to send us away (the restaurant is pretty empty after 3ish, I guess that's why). I had a really nice time! ~ French Toast (4.5/5) ~ Heard good things about the French toast, and they do not disappoint!! The 2 slices of toast are quite thick, with buttery crispy golden edges, soft and custardy inside. It also came with a generous amount of mixed fresh fruits (blueberries, banana, mango, strawberries). This is such a treat! ~ Makanek (4.5/5) ~ I really enjoyed this dish, such a wonderful palette of flavours and textures!! The Lebanese sausages are nicely spiced and juicy, the smooth, creamy, flavourful hummus tasted great with the crispy toasted pine nuts, and the sauce is fragrant with a citrusy undernote, doesn't taste greasy at all. Every elements of the dish complimented each other perfectly. The pita bread is served hot with a lovely soft and fluffy texture, and a nice floury taste. ~ Chicken Shiah Kabab Plate (3/5) ~ The grilled chicken breast is pretty average, it's not very flavourful and not well charred. The meat itself is alright though, not too tough or dry. I really enjoyed the basmati rice, very fragrant and well cooked! ~ Tunisian Eggs (3/5) ~ Slightly disappointed. Whilst the peppers and tomato are nice and fresh, there are not enough spices and not as fragrant as I hoped. Not the best shakshuka I have had, but it's okay. ~ Hummus (4/5) ~ We got this for free. The hummus is quite smooth and creamy, tasted very flavourful. Even with the olive oil, it didn't feel greasy. The lemon juice and radishes gave it a nice kick of refreshing flavours. ~ Babaganoush (3.5/5) ~ Also got this for free. Not as good as the hummus, but still pretty nice. The eggplant is not too mushy or fine, retaining a bit of a texture which is nice. It's slightly different from what I usually have, without the smokiness taste and much more refreshing with the added radishes, tomatoes and cucumbers, I quite this combination. Will I be back? Our running club came here for breakfast after running a 5K race in the area. All the other restaurants close by were packed for brunch and we lucked out at Uncle Momo. Staff was terrific and arranged tables to fit it in our large group. Thought we would have to wait but were all seated within a few minutes. Terrific menu choices for breakfast with a Lebanese touch.
