This place is basically a Turkish restaurant and not necessarily Mediterranean at all. If a geographical region needs to be associated with it then it should be a called mix of Aegean / Anatolian, as I am originally from that part of the World. Unfortunately, there is something very common in these type of Turkish restaurants and I am surprised not many people mention this. Most of the time the dishes, particularly the mezes are way too salty. The amount of salt they use is too much that it overwhelms the expected flavor of the dish and personally makes my tongue feel swollen. I am not sure if they do this partially on purpose to extend the shelf time as almost all cold mezes are prepared beforehand and not to order. They might be trying to keep the dishes from spoiling for 3 days or so. In any case and whatever the reason is it ruins the flavors for me. I'll try this place one more time then re-review with an update in the coming weeks. read more

Went here on a Monday afternoon with my boyfriend and we were absolutely delighted by the service and cuisine. They welcomed us with a basket of pita and bread with two dipping sauces. We got the cheese rolls to split which were amazing. "Better than mozzarella sticks" - my boyfriend. They were delicious so I highly recommend. I got the falafel and hummus as my meal and he got the falafel wrap. The waiter offered additional pitas for the hummus. I also got Turkish coffee which was delightful. It was strong and flavorful and came with a Turkish delight which was a nice touch. It was served on a beautiful plate. At the end of our meal, the waiter offered complimentary Turkish tea, which I had and really enjoyed. I just wish that they had cubed sugar for the tea instead of packets. We visited for a weekend lunch in the summer, and while the food took quite a while to arrive after ordering, the overall experience was enjoyable. I've been coming to Efes a couple times now and it's always consistent! I love the open space and homey decor. The service is always quick, nice, and attentive. We're always seated immediately but maybe because I go on random week days. I love their chicken adana and my gf likes their lamb. The waiter was nice enough to tell us they have a platter with both! I will say their entrees are a good portion and we don't finish it all so sharing was perfect. It has lots of flavor! I'm picky with onion but I like theirs. We also tried their combination platter where you can choose 4 dips. We chose Hummus, Babaganush, Cacik, and Ezme. We both agreed the cacik was great and I always love babaganush. The ezme was spicy to me! I have a nut allergy and oddly they told me there's no nuts but online it says walnuts are in it so def ask if you have an allergy and want to try. The vibe is casual date night, and it's perfect local neighborhood spot to support. For starters, we got the hummus. You could tell this was home made and so fresh. It came with warm, fresh bread, but we got a side of pita too. I recommend doing the same as the hummus serving was plentiful! For the main dish, we got the half chicken and half lamb. I think this is a wonderful dish if you want to sample both kinds of meat. However, my fiance did the adana lamb kebob and trying a piece, I will say I prefered the spices on that a lot more! For desert, I got the baklava. This baklava is hands down one of the BEST ones I've ever had. If you come here, do not skip on this desert. Throughout the night, the servers were attentive and kind. While we were waiting for food, they brought generous portions of Turkish bread and pita with two dips- all very fresh. I've been ordering in from Efe's more recently and one time when I went to order take out from the Downtown Jersey City location, Mecca was so nice and friendly and offered me Turkish tea while I waited for my food and invited me back to come and enjoy to dine in and they are also BYOB. So tonight after my workout I decided I wanted a little wine and a healthy meal. Armelindo was the best waiter and sweetest! He was friendly and attentive and we had a great conversation! We always get the lamb kebab with rice and some salad garnishing. The lamb is tender and cooked well. We are able to warm it up and it will remain tender. The lamb could use more taste especially since the rice is bland also for people who do not like to pour that cucumber sauce all over. The baba ganoush is tasty and fresh. The hummus is pretty basic and could use some more flavoring. The few times I ordered the falafel it was fine just dry at times. Nothing compares to a New York east village falafel. By far my favorite place to get take out from. The food travels well, and is consistent. I've ordered through grub hub, they deliver their own food and has always gotten to me faster than the estimated time on the app. My go to is the chicken kebab with rice and the little salad is always flavorful. I have ordered from Efes a lot and in general, the desserts are great and the entrees are just ok and desperately need salt. They charge too much for the food to be just ok at best. Today I ordered the Pan Seared Tilapia, hummus, Turkish tea and Kunefe. My tea arrived less than half full. The tilapia is absolutely disgusting and is swimming in at least a half cup of oil. I tried some and it tasted terrible - no flavor at all except oil. I threw it away and it was $21. Kunefe was burnt and inedible. It smelled but didn't look that bad - but once I tasted it I actually had to spit it out because of the burnt taste. Hummus is ok. Overall, this was bad. Really bad. read more

Just a short walk from the Grove Street PATH station, it offers an understated, homey atmosphere for diners of all backgrounds. Service may be slow at times due to low staffing, but everyone is very warm and friendly. My group ordered variations of chicken and lamb kebabs and Adana, which is a ground meat variation. Everything is very tasty and filling, and many come with sides such as rice or fries. The lentil soup was a heartier tomato soup with extra fiber and protein. Would recommend for so many reasons! Plus, extra sides of pita are only 50 cents! Great flavors all around, and lots of options we will need to try on our next visit.
