Really, the food was good. My sausage was good. Some of the steam table vegetables looked iffy, but what I personally got was good. Each person on the staff was a young Anglo man in his teens or early twenties. One of them was brand new. The prices were high, and if you wanted a refill on your drink you had to contribute to the staff's scholarship fund. The place was a drag. Fox News on the TV. Easily one of my favorite BBQ spots in my new hometown.My aunt and I crashed the drive thru on our way home from Walmart last Friday. We ordered two rib combos and a couple of sides. I ordered the rib/sausage combo with green beans and black eyed peas. Lita ordered a pound of ribs with a pint of grilled potatoes. The style,texture,and taste of this establishment's ribs should be celebrated on an international level.They were cooked and seasoned to perfection - perhaps some of the best commercial ribs I have ever and will ever have.The sausage was juicy and flavorful, without a single hint of greasiness.The green beans were delicious and the black eye peas absolutely perfect. Potato salad was decent, it tasted like food service potato salad, the cabbage was boiled and just ok. The sandwich had brisket and a small amount of sliced sausage. I don't know how a December 6, 2021 review can be so gushing about what great "Texas BBQ" this place has when yesterday, December 7, 20021, I got the most foul, nastiest crap I've ever overpaid for! Not food poisoning bad, just gosh awful nasty! Some kind of weird taste and smell like they had started and repeatedly doused their BBQ wood with diesel! I later passed wood piles burning out in the country that smelled exactly like what this mess smelled/tasted like! Needless to say, one greasy bite of black, instead of remotely red, chopped beef was subsequently spit out and 2 overpriced sandwiches were literally thrown out on the side of the road for the animals to eat! With a name like uncle mutts I had to assume it stayed in business this long because the food was just that good, and that may have been true at one time. But it looks like a place that had good food but fell apart from bad management. Too bad, it has great potential. The quality of the meat was good, like other reviewers said its either burnt or undercooked, mine was stone cold and undercooked. The fried sweet corn was very good 3 teen boys working the place, they were nice but, they were teen boys... The place was very dirty and wow outdated. Mold on the ceiling, table dirty dead bugs on the windowsill.... My advice to the owner, gut the place, doesn't have to be fancy just clean and from this decade, get a professional manager, preferably a woman, with OCD. Wish you luck. read more

Went to Uncle Mutts today as part of our Great Coastal Texas Barbecue Trail adventure, and with two receipts you get a T-Shirt. I ordered a two meat platter, Babyback Ribs & sausauge with coal slaw and beans. My Wife had a two meat platter Brisket & Sausauge with cole slaw and beans. The Sausauge and Brisket were very good as well as the cole slaw. Beans were a little light on the flavor and the Ribs, while tender were very fatty and did not have a good taste. While I sometimes like a T,V. on when I am eating please keep it to sports or shows. The newscast that was playing was annoying. With plenty of Barbecue options in the Crossroads I will probably not go back. read more

I personally don't like it. The brisket is too smoky. And a bit dry. The ribs were as well. I just really didn't like the flavor at all. And it was kind of pricey. Not our first choice after reading reviews but glad we found it. The Limon's Corral place was it but they were out of ribs of a Friday evening. We got the Uncle Mutt's 3 meat and a half rack of ribs. Green beans and the potatoes were the sides of choice. We always feel when in Texas, BBQ "WILL" be on the dining playlist. I mean really, it's Texas ! So we ordered the ribs, sausage, and chopped beef. Ribs are always our go to meat and the standard. The ribs surpassed the standard. The sausage was also excellent. Sometimes the sausage at BBQ restaurants is just blah. We wanted some pulled pork but are starting to feel pork butt just isn't on the menu down here. For our third meat we got chopped beef. It was mixed with some kind of sauce. This was the only thing that disappointed us. Just had that funny taste as described in previous post. I even slopped some on a slice of bread with lots of sauce and that didn't help. So wrapping the meats up, ribs two thumbs up. Sausage two thumbs up. Chopped beef two thumbs down. But hey, you might love it. Forgot about the sliced brisket. Yum. Tender and juicy and able to be cut with my plastic spoon. Nice flavor and a pretty smoke ring. Sauce and sides; potatoes were good according to my wife and she likes here taters. She also had green beans which she said were great. But hey, they had bacon in them! How can you go wrong? The staff was very nice and helpful and the place appeared clean. We did our normal "para llevar" back to our hotel room. Good stuff. So I am not sure if it is because I have been out of state for a while or not. I did go to Jr. High and High School in Victoria, many years ago. At the time, it was not really a BBQ kind of town. When I traveled back to visit family, I just remembered Uncle Mutt's as being boring and dry. On this last trip however, I was very pleased with what we were served. The Brisket was just off the smoker, hot, juicy great ring and bark. It was great. The sausage, which we had to wait a few minutes for, was also great. Nice and peppery. Seemed either hime made or of the 'hill country' varity. it was not a 'hillshire farms' link. This was much better. So I am not sure if, as is with BBQ in general, the other folks came at the wrong time or not and just got a bad slice. Or maybe they are inclined to compare Uncle Mutt's to the Salt Lick, Snows or the City Market. It is none of these above. But, UM is in Victoria and it is solid Q. I'm not a local. I don't know where the spots are. All I knew was that I wanted to grab some food from a non-chain BBQ spot. I just happened to have found one a few blocks away from the Hampton Inn, where I was staying. I found Uncle Mutt's. This is definitely a fast food joint. The food had definitely been sitting (I came in around store closing time) for hours, if not longer, but I didn't care. If you're looking for fresh food, don't come here. I warned you. But then again, for me personally, I don't expect anything gourmet with a spot named "Uncle Mutt's-anything". I knew what I was getting myself into and I wanted cheap BBQ and this place had done so. I got the Uncle Mutt's special that came with 3 choice of meat and two sides for ~$11-12 after tax -- which I think is a good deal, given the observable quality of the food. I got rice, coleslaw, brisket, pork ribs, and ham. The food was rather delicious. The BBQ sauce mixed with the Montreal Steak seasoning (yes, that's how it tastes like) on the ribs satisfied my taste buds. The meat was tender and fell off the bone. From the outside, this place looks legit. Got some age to it, you can smell the smoke out in the parking lot and has a great name for a BBQ joint. It's got a great location on the busiest street in Victoria. Walking in, the smokiness is a bit overwhelming. Very strong. Lack of ventilation? The size of the place might be part of the reason for the overwhelming smoke. It's not a large building overall. The decorations are very Texan/rustic and lend to an air of authenticity. All good there. We both ordered the pork ribs. We get to see them getting cut and the sizes are generous. Good amount of meat on the bones. The sides look good and the prices are pretty consistent with what most places charge nowadays. (BBQ is too expensive anymore...why they've gotten so proud is a mystery.) Wife orders potato salad and mac salad as her sides and I get green beans and potato salad. I bite into my ribs and they're tender, pull off the bone, but not fall off the bone. VERY smokey in flavor. I.mean.VERY.smokey. As we get into the second rib (each) we both start noticing an off flavor that wasn't smoke. Wife asks me if I thought they were cooked all the way through. With ribs, it's kind of hard to tell sometimes. There smoke ring was there on the meat under a decent crust...but there was a flavor for both of us that made our salivary glands go crazy...like "get that out of here!" and left a strange aftertaste in our mouths. We both ended up spitting the meat out into paper towels. Not all the pieces had this odd taste...but she left one un-eaten and I wasn't about to offer to finish it for her. I liked the potato salad enough...wife didn't. She thought the mac salad was way too vinegary and my green beans were damned salty. The tea was decent...I'll say that much. I had gotten into the habit of checking Yelp before trying a new place out of town. I wish I had this time. I didn't and missed out on some reviews I would have agreed with. Sorry, Uncle Mutt. Imagine this, you work12hrs, and coming to a bbq restaurant with the thoughts of getting your food to go. You place an order, with a broken speaker, which should of been a sign from the start. The man comes on screaming at you. You continue placing order, and drive around. You wait, 3 or 4 min just so they can swipe your card and as you wait, the guy mumbles from what I can hear, is they are trying to make sure the chopped bbq is still good. Another 5 min goes by and then I notice, the 2 people working are now just staring and laughing. So I stare back and it seems as they are not going to give me my order. So finally i gave up and just drove away. I have no clue to what kind of clowns this place hires but all i know, is that this place made me feel uncomfortable with the individuals preparing my food. In mine & my family's opinion. Uncle Mutts should have a lot better BBQ. We have been eating from there off & on for over 20 yrs. You would think by now their BBQ WOULD BE MOUTH WATERING. Nope it is not..... most times the sliced beef is dry, has to much hard black crust on it. When you buy by the pound. You would think w/ half you meat being fat. That it would be juicy tinder meat. Nope it's not..... then every once in a while we will buy one of their chicken halves or more. When you can dry out the dark meat. That is someone who doesn't know how to BBQ . Or just doesn't care!! We hadn't been to Uncle Mutts in years but decided to try it the other night. OMG! It was so good. They had a 2/$25 plate deal on a Friday night. My husband had brisket and it was so tender and flavorful. He went nuts over the spicy black eyed peas and pea salad. I had the bbq chicken which was ok.
