My husband always loves to surprise me with Uncle Sam's chocolates. The past few times, I was very disappointed in the quality of what he purchased. The chocolate covered nuts were not the same dark chocolate they previously used. The next time he purchased candy for me on Mother's Day he chose licorice. It came in 4 individual packages. Always stop in here at Easter and purchase a special chocolate candy. If it's unavailable I usually special order it and pick it up. Stopped in there today and store was very crowded. Couldn't find the candy and there were 3 employees there and I asked them if they had any. They looked at each other and the one said " the kewpie doll chocolate is the one with the strange face ". I have ordered candy for Christmas, Easter and sometimes other times for over 40 years. When we moved away from the area, I would plan a visit when visiting and when we moved farther away, would order a shipment. I ordered for home, for relatives fir birthdays, holidays, times of sadness, etc. it became a family tradition. In 2022 I learned there was a change in owners, manager and staff. When we were in town and I stopped at the Schenectady store , the staff member was overwhelmed by my order. Yes it was over $100 but she was quick to tell me this order was nothing since some man comes in every week or every other week and orders $400. The staff person was rude. Part of my in person order was missed so we went to the Latham store and the staff person was wonderful. She understood the importance of how to pack the candy so creams were not smashed. I ordered for Christmas. Little surprised my large order did not have free shipping (change in how it was), but ok. Part of the order were creams and when you ship out of state, the old staff knew you needed to put the candy in the other type of container with a divider and not stack cream atop of cream. The candy arrived and some of the creams were smashed open. Ok, I was in touch with the manager and she was very nice, apologized and was going to send a replacement box. It would be a little bit of time because they have so many orders. Ok, that is understandable. I even contacted them after a few weeks and nothing. It has been over three months. That candy is not coming. Easter is a few weeks away and for the first time in decades, there will not be any Uncle Sam's candy sent to Ohio, Colorado, Arizona nor Florida. I am sad a family tradition has ended. It is sad that a small local company is no longer the place it was. The candy is not cheap but it was very good. Going in person may result in a better experience, depending on what staff is working. I hope others have a better experience because I believe in supporting small, non chain businesses. read more

I am disappointed. I am the son of a candy maker in Louisville, KY. As a young boy at Christmas every year, I, along with the rest of my family made 1500+ lbs of peanut brittle which dad sold to finance summer vacations. Dad also made, caramels,fudge, nougat for mom to dip in chocolates and much more. Early in his life he was a professional candy maker at Buseth's in downtown Louisville. I was his helper every Christmas and learned the art. I still know Dad's recipes, especially peanut brittle. For a long while I bought dark chocolate covered nuts at Uncle Sam's for my wife Ellie. They were top shelf and the Newton Plaza store always carried them in the case. Not long ago they stopped carrying them and one had to special order them. But they were still the same excellent nuts I always enjoyed. Then two weeks ago I asked if they had dark chocolate cashews. Answer was yes. Got a pound. Ellie open the box to find dark shinny balls. Not what We expected. I also got a bag of their peanut brittle too and was sorely disappointed with the quality and taste aside from the bag was full of crumbs and small bits I don't know where Uncle Sam's gets their stock now. Quaint candy store chock full of goodies of all kinds. My mission was to get Easter chocolate treats and I was not disappointed by the selection. Milk, dark, white, they have it all. I was also directed by another shopper to chocolate covered Oreos! Oh my! In the bag they went. The best find for me was real pectin jellybeans! They are hard to find so I was glad to pick up two bags. Everyone looks forward to the selections I bring to the holiday get together. Yes, I paid more for these treats but each is worth the price. They are open 7 days a week, have been in business 80 years, and make 95% of the chocolate there. Their selections are spectacular too. Almond butter crunch. That's all you need to say. I don't know how they make it. I don't want to know. I don't know exactly what's in it. Chocolate, crushed almonds, toffee... I suspect crack as well. It doesn't matter. You must go there... buy some... and eat it. Pretend it's good for you... could be; it's possible... right? Anyway, they make a full range of high-end chocolate confections. And I've had quite a few of them. The chocolate here is great, but the customer service has gone downhill. Makes me sad, as this seemed like such a wonderfully run business. They did favors for my son's birthday and they came out wonderful. They were so attentive and my boys were even given complimentary chocolate upon visiting. Then last time we went in, there were 2 women working there. One was on the phone and when we walked in she just glared at us. There was another woman working in the back. We browsed around but knew what we wanted. After 20 minutes no one was coming out to help. We finally peeked back, looked at this woman and asked her if she could help us and she rolled her eyes! When she finally came out, she was so irritated every time we continued to ask her for something behind the counter. When she rang us up, she didn't know the prices on anything and asked us to go check. Why even hire someone to work here? She certainly isn't earning her paycheck... I love this candy store!! It really is a gem in Schenectady! I heard the advertisements for them on the radio around Easter time and I'm glad I decided to stop in after work. Your purchases here will certainly add up, but sometimes you need to pay for high quality. I definitely think it is worth it. Around Easter time, they had TONS of chocolate bunnies and other creations, basically anything you could think of they had! They also had regular candies that you can buy by the pound... really anything you are looking for. Their dark chocolate is absolutely amazing. I was also able to get Easter candy that was sugar free for my diabetic mother. It was nice to be able to give her a bunny along with the rest of the family that she was able to enjoy. She said that it tasted awesome. Be sure to check out this place the next time your sweet tooth is craving something... they have plenty of parking in a private lot for your convenience (which, for someone like me who detests parallel parking, is greatly appreciated). read more

Picked up some mint meltaways and pecan chocolate patties, a.k.a Urkles! They had a bacon caramel which made me chuckle. I tried the chai sea salt caramel and it was delicious. Glad to have found this candy shop nearby. They have a lot of molded chocolate and a few truffles, as well as, a display case of sugar-free truffles. I hoped this place would be like See's or Godiva that sells fancy chocolates and truffles with unusual flavor profiles (hence my chai caramel). They are a candy maker (not a chocolate maker) - with lots of boxed chocolates. Absolutely the best butter crunch, and the dark / milk chocolate mix is a terrific Christmas gift. I started giving the 1lb box as a gift to three friends, and one year later, the list if up to 10. Word got out and everyone wants some. Also, last year, squirrels got into UPS pacakge before I got home and Uncle Sam's sent replacement box at no cost to me. It's awesome, I just can't give it 5 stars because it didn't have the carmel bark that I wanted in all the flavors. It does appear that they have a delicious almost butter crunch but that isn't what I needed. They have a MASSIVE Selection of shaped chocolate, if you want something cute and creative to give as a gift this place is it. It's all completely reasonably priced. It doesn't really look like it has as big of a candy counter selection as some of the other candy stores but I didn't really look. The bulk of the store is made up of shaped chocolate so if you are looking for mass variety this place can't really give it to you. It's great non the less. read more
