We were coming back from buying a dishwasher and pulled up to this tiny barbecue spot that used to be called Uncle Sonny's (?? still not 100% sure what it's called now, which honestly adds to the experience). No website. No branding. Just vibes, smoke, and cool accents. And some ads for discounted tickets to a community wrestling match taking place tonight. So naturally, we ordered: Brisket sandwich Pulled pork plate + 1/3 lb of sausage Fried pies (chocolate & lemon - because obviously) First impression: this is the kind of place where you trust the food immediately because the building looks like it could survive a tornado and a country album cover at the same time. Brisket sandwich -- super solid. Not trying too hard, just smoky, tender, and exactly what you want when you're in the middle of nowhere and questioning your life decisions (in a good way). Pulled pork plate -- this is where they flex a little. Juicy, good bark, and the kind of portion that makes you reconsider finishing it... and then you finish it anyway. Except my teenage daughter, who hadn't eaten anything all day except a Kodiak protein cup, didn't quite... 1/3 lb of sausage -- yeah, that was a solid addition. Smothered in a mix of mild, hot, and sweet bbq sauce, it was good without being too greasy. Fried pies -- listen. These are dangerous. Crispy, sweet, probably made by someone's grandma in the back. If you skip these, you've made a mistake. Overall: No frills. No nonsense. When I get a craving for barbeque in Shelbyville, this is where I end up. It is a small, humble business but I do believe I'll have more, thank you. I have tried and recommend the pulled pork, pulled chicken, chicken wings and beef brisket. The smoked sausage tastes generic. I have not tried their ribs. My friend prefers the Bar-B-Que Nachos. The sides are generous and the potato salad stands out ( I think they put a little bit of the pulled pork in there!). There are daily specials from Monday - Thursday: Monday - Meatloaf dinner Tuesday - Wings are 1/2 price! Wednesday - $1.00 off any sandwich Thursday - Chicken dinner They have a small plastic globe with peanuts flavored with their "famous" Butt Rub for you to munch on while you are waiting for your order. My husband and I are working here from out of State. We just discovered Sonnys. What a treat :) We are trying to sample their menu bit by bit. Rolled through town on my way to Nashville and figured I'd give this place a shot. I didn't necessarily have high hopes because I can be a little picky about BBQ. I've eaten at some of the highest rated BBQ restaurants in the country and what I had here was right up there with some of the best. The sides I had (creamed corn and sweet potatoes) were excellent. A lot of BBQ places have weak sides that are flavorless and/or an afterthought. This is where a lot of them really make their money and the sides at Uncle Sonny's were worth every penny. As far as the meats went, the pulled pork was perfectly cooked. Not mushy but not dried out. Got a little bark in the batch I had and that was tasty. Tennessee isn't really known for brisket and they did a great job of that as well. It was cooked perfectly. Maybe a little light on the bark but the flavor was still good. Then there was the sauce. I'm a big fan of red, vinegar based sauces on pork. They had two options which were both great. I preferred the hot but you can't go wrong with either one. The staff was really friendly and helpful. On my way to a TN State Park with great waterfalls (on 4th of July), I needed food in Shelbyville, TN. I passed the local chain fast food (which made my 7 year old real unhappy) and found Sonny's. The gals were so friendly and busy being the 4th and all. The locals said the slaw and beans were the best and they were right! The sweet potato casserole was bomb too! We had brisket and pulled pork. Both were great! This place is well worth a detour to feed you hungry family a great meal. read more

I went by there on 11/19/19 & ordered 2 pork sandwiches with slaw & asked for the slaw to be on the side since I really didn't know when I would be eating them. Best barbecue brisket my husband has eaten. They make a wonderful sweet potato casserole that is simply scrumptious. The baked beans are just as good too. Service was great. Portions are good sized.
