Initial visit to Uncle's Chicken in the Kapalama Shopping Plaza across from Upscale Hawaii, the old Diner's The eatery is nestled in between Viet Chubby Boy and Sakana Grill. I am not the biggest fan of chicken...give me duck, anyday. But a good chicken sandwich is a meal that I can appreciate. Looking at the menu on the picture window...I had to wonder is Uncle: Korean...African-American...Deep South gentleman? Well, I think he's Taiwanese. Menu revolves around chicken. They have plates, sandwiches, and slushies. I got the Taro Hokkaido Slushie for takeout. It was okay...I can't tell you what it tastes like...other than that it was sweet. The Grilled Chicken Sandwich was unassuming. It was slightly spiced...a bit different than I am used to and it had a bit of a kick. I would not order anything spicy from their menu. Located in Kalihi along with a bunch of other great places is this hole in the wall. Every other place here is pretty good so had to give them a try. Nice and clean. You know it's a Asian family run place when their kids are sitting at one of the tables doing some homework (at least I hope it was) The guy ordering was super friendly and patiently explained some stuff to me Ordered the original spicy chicken plate and went to make it fresh. Was craving fried chicken... they delivered!! The spicy wings were tasty and crispy. (Just wasn't spicy) we also go the creole wings... flavorful but not as tasty as the crispy ones. It being off my beaten path, I wasn't aware of Uncle's Chicken until someone posted a photo of their fried whole chicken in a Facebook group. This was something different. Today I had something to take care of in the Kalihi area, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to stop by Uncle's Chicken. It was easy to find, among the array of small eating and other establishments all sharing the same parking lot, next to the Post Office. I had the place all to myself when I entered. The gentleman behind the counter helped me to place my order for the Crispy Fried Whole Chicken. He said it would take 15 minutes, then went into the kitchen. A short while later, a lady came out and stood at the counter. She helped a customer who came in after me. There were children at one of the tables, quietly entertaining themselves. I assumed they belonged to the couple. Before I knew it, the woman said something and brought a tall bag containing the chicken over to where I was sitting. I made my way home with the bag of hot food. My wife had prepared something else for lunch by then (another new recipe), so we had that first. Later we finally got around to tasting the chicken. I'm surprised this place hasn't gone viral. This is one of those businesses that I wouldn't be surprised to see on a food influencer's TikTok page. The chicken was filling, crispy and delicious and didn't give us that heavy greasy -ick feeling that a lot of fried food can give you. Uncle's Chicken can be missed because it's along side a row of restaurants next to Diners on North King Street in Kalihi. After returning from Korea (which is not on yelp, so I couldn't post or check-in to yelp while I was there), I am hunting to find chicken like how restaurants in korea make it. They say Korea has better chicken than the fried chicken than here, and I now know why. The closest that I can compare to is Uncle's Chicken. Although it is about $1.60 for one wing, you will not disappoint. The chicken is so juicy inside and crispy outside with their own seasoning that it makes it so delicious! It came with their own special dipping sauce, but their original chicken alone suffices. Although a bit expensive, would I get chicken here again? Yes, definitely, and will try their other types of chicken. They also sell milk teas and boba drinks, which is a plus. I ordered the jasmine green milk tea, and the boba to my surprise are lighter, so since I couldn't drink it all, I left it in the fridge until the next day, and it did not turn hard, so I got to enjoy it a day after as well. Cashier was very nice, but did not understand me when I asked about the different types of boba drinks. Too bad i missed any any coupons or specials other yelpers mentioned previously. After doing our shopping today my husband said we go try this chicken place next to the kapalama post office. It's uncle chicken. Came home with the box of 10 wings. We ordered the original wings came in the box sauce to dip the chicken wings. I said it's good but I could taste the sweetness and it was a little spicy. But I could handle the heat. There's a handful of 4-top tables within the restaurant, the place is relatively clean and well-kept. Many different drink offers and simple to choose from options for the food portion. The cashier was patient in telling us what some of the popular food items and drink items were. She didn't push too hard as to hurrying us along in the ordering process. Is this the start of the CFC (Chinese Fried Chicken) craze? Perhaps! Another CFC place (not the same here) just opened in Kapahulu. This CFC place is called Uncle's Chicken. Located in Kalihi in the Kapalama Shopping Plaza along with Guieb Cafe, Han Yang, Sakana Grill, the newly opened Viet Chubby Boy, and etc. There's a decent amount of parking, which probably gets full at certain times, but there's more further in. Uncle's Chicken is a small place with only a few tables. It's very simple and low key there. Hopefully, there'll be some artwork, plants, or a TV playing Sisters Who Make Waves videos around to liven up the place. A majority of the food is deep fried (of course!) with a grilled chicken option. Actually, scratch that, a majority of the menu is tea and fruity drinks! I'll just stick with the chicken. Everything is made to order, so be prepared to wait, or better yet, call in to order beforehand. My first visit I ordered the Popcorn Chicken and New Orleans Chicken Wings. The popcorn chicken was surprisingly delicious! The chicken was tender and tasty with a nice hint of sweetness that goes well with the saltiness. The batter was crispy and crunchy. The accompanying sweet sriracha sauce was very good. It has a thousand island dressing feel with a nice sriracha kick. The buttermilk ranch sauce was just that. The New Orleans Party Wings didn't really have anything that resembled New Orleans. Maybe there was some Cajun seasoning, but I couldn't really taste it. The taste I could clearly tell was the Chinese spices of star anise, cumin, and cloves, which is no problem at all because the wings were flavorful and tender. The wings were fried without an abundance of batter, so don't expect something super crispy and crunchy. Just a light crisp of the skin. My second visit I had the Onion Rings and Avocado Wrap. I felt cheated with the Onion Rings. $4.95 + tax for five rings. A dollar a ring? I know things are more expensive, but onions weren't that much affected. The onions were too thin and cooked too long that resulted in a shriveled, tough to bite through onion. You're basically eating a lot of crispy batter. You receive a small container of ketchup, but there was barely any there. It was only enough for half. I'm usually a sucker for onion rings, but I won't be a sucker next time here. The Avocado Wrap had grilled chicken, avocado, and lettuce. This was delicious!! The grilled chicken was tender, tasty, juicy, and flavorful. Avocado added a nice creaminess and the lettuce a nice crunch. The only issue I had was the wrap, or the wrapping of the wrap. It was open on both sides... Obviously, after the first bite, something will fall out from the other side, and a lot of the tasty juice will spill out as well! That's okay though. I can close it up myself. I wouldn't want to lose a piece of chicken and avocado in order to enclose it on one side. Overall, a solid Chinese style fried chicken restaurant. The chickens are prepared well. Service can be slow, which is all right. Seems like just one uncle in the back doing the cooking. I'll come back again to try the rest of the menu, and the grilled chicken! read more

We were looking for some fried chicken and came across Uncles Chicken. This little hole in the wall produces some of the BEST fried chicken we have ever had!!! Kind of reminded us of the old Pioneer chicken, but better. I'm not sure where they're getting these giant chickens from, but they are delicious. The skin is super crispy and the meat is moist, but the most surprising part was that it did not feel greasy. I got the spaghetti and my girl got the rice and corn. If you're into the black pepper flavor, go with the spaghetti, but I was not a huge fan. The rice and corn were better accompaniments in my opinion. But who cares?!? That chicken was ridiculous!!!! Uncle's Chicken is a small chicken shop located near Sakana in Kalihi. I placed a 5 chicken sandwich order around 11:20 and was quoted 15 minutes. I left downtown to grab the food right after and my food was ready by the time I got there. Very impressive chicken sandwich. I got the spicy one and it was only spicy in certain parts of my sandwich, which is why I gave minus one star. It seems like I was eating the original sandwich and put hot sauce in one spot of my sandwich. Other than that, the chicken was moist and crispy. The bread was so good. Seemed like a sweet bread bun. The restaurant itself looked pretty clean. There's disinfecting wipes on the tables and the girls would wipe in between guests. I was serviced by maybe a teenager? Maybe the owners older kids? There was also very young kids outside too hanging out next to the hamburger buns. At the moment - with any $25 purchase you can get either a free lilikoi drink or popcorn chicken. Im not sure how long this promotion will last, but you should definitely take advantage of it. I ordered the Waffle fries, 1 regular chicken sandwich, 1 spicy chicken sandwich, and one Taro Hokkaido smoothie. For the free item i opted for the popcorn chicken. I originally was going to order a wrap, but they didn't have any wraps on hand so i got the spicy chicken sandwich instead. I honestly could not tell between the regular or spicy because it looked the same inside and outside. There was a side of extra sriracha mayo sauce but i wasn't sure if that was supposed to be for the spicy chicken sandwich or the waffle fries. I went to Uncle's Chicken and saw on the window that there was a special on the Chicken Leg Quarters which comes with two leg quarters for about a $1 off so I thought why not? When I got my order it was steaming hot I went back home to eat my chicken an was quite happy as it had a nice spice to the chicken and the flavor was really good. The interior of the shop was pretty nice and the person behind the counter was reasonably nice also parking outside can get a bit crowded so peak times may be hard finding a spot.
