Although we live in the Kaka'ako neighborhood and have frequently passed by the New Queen Barbeque, we've never wandered in to try it, even though there have been lines of hungry diners out the door. However, we have eaten at the other three restaurants (Yakiniku Sizzle, Niu Baguette BBQ & Noodle Soup, and Phuket Thai) within the same building complex. We've often seen lines of customers out the door and their crowded dine-in area during breakfast and lunch hours. Since I've been "holed up" this past month because I'm recovering from knee replacement surgery, I've been catching up on reading e-mails, magazine articles, and keeping up with local and international events. While reading a newsletter from Frolic Hawai'i and HONOLULU Magazine, my eyes were drawn to an article featuring their writers' favorite fried chicken finds. Of course, I quickly shared this article with my deep-fried food-loving husband, who picked New Queen Barbeque to try their Mochiko Chicken Plate. If you're lucky, you might score metered street parking along Cooke or Kawaiaha'o streets because this corner business caters to walk-in traffic or quick pre-order pick-up. Since this café is within our neighborhood, my husband and I chose to walk over. However, although I'm still within a month of TKA surgical recovery, my walking distance has been limited to 5-7 minutes every hour. I forged along with my husband, even though it took longer than 10 minutes one-way to cover the distance than usual. Once inside the café, I quickly scanned the menu and ordered the mini-garlic shrimp plate since my husband had his mind set on the mini Mochiko chicken plate. We waited a few minutes in the air-conditioned eating area while this business prepared our meals to order. We were surprised by the wrist-bending heft and regular-sized takeout packaging when we picked up our mini lunch plates. Each mini lunch plate ($11.45) had a scoop of steamed white rice, macaroni salad, and fresh shredded cabbage. The aromatic garlic shrimp plate with six perfectly cooked, lightly battered, shell-on shrimp topped with a butter sauce with copious amounts of lightly sautéed chopped garlic and scallions. My husband's crisp, fried yet moist and flavorful mochiko chicken plate was loaded as the takeout container cover seemed to pop open. Both of us were happy with the generous portions, flavors, well-executed preparations, and value of our lunch plates. I needed lunch before heading over the Pali. I had read about New Queen somewhere, but I couldn't remember where. Street parking with meters, but honestly, does anyone even check them? I put in a few quarters, just in case. Friendly hello when I walked in. It took me a while to look over the menu and people started coming in so I had to hurry. Went with the BBQ mixed plate...kalbi, teri beef, and teri chicken. Lots of people coming in and getting food to go. Must be good! And it was! The kalbi was a little fatty, but the meat was tender. The teri beef and chicken did not disappoint. Great mac salad! At one point, I think the workers were arguing, but it was funny. Great place to come to. Reasonably priced in these trouble times. Ended up with leftover Mac and just a lil garlic chicken. If I were you and you like 2 scoops of rice just order one mini all rice. I did not think that far ahead. Hamburger steak was delicious. It did not disappoint. I believe it was homemade patties and old school scratch gravy. Fried chicken was nice and crispy. It wasn't your regular home style fried chicken it had a slight Chinese seasoning but not overwhelming. Yummy Garlic chicken this was ok but if you like it on the sweeter side, this is not for you. Breakfast in Honolulu, Hawaii... My Aunty Nohea was wondering about the location of my niece's Graduation party. I told her that I could take her there and show her exactly where to park! Aunty Nohea knew exactly where it was because she used to work in the area! Yay! We found free street parking around the corner on Kawaiha'o Street and we walked down the block. New Queen Barbeque is located on the corner of Queen Street and Cooke Street. It was a clean, bright, straightforward, order, pay, and pick-up at the counter type of place. There are five tables for dining in, but most customers did takeout. The door was left open, so, the air conditioning is just average. I ordered the regular (not mini) Hamburger Steak. It came with a light brown gravy, potato salad, and two scoops of rice. The potato salad was not memorable and the Hamburger was just okay. The gravy helped me eat more rice. I was hungry and it filled me up. This was a thoughtful meal from my Aunty and I'm grateful for her kindness! I'd return if I could find free street parking again! read more

My wife saw a post from Nadine C. She had mentioned the hamburger steak. That's one of my wife's favorite dishes. Willing to try someplace new, we went there for lunch. I got lucky and got a parking space near the restaurant. It was busy with a lot of takeout orders. The service was fast and friendly. They have a few tables for dine in. The dine in area is spacious and clean. Debbie ordered the mini hamburger steak and a mini bbq short ribs for me. I got to try her hamburger steak. The hamburger was homemade, but a little dry. It was the gravy that made the dish. My short ribs had a good flavor, and the char was perfect. Of the two pieces of meat, one was tender and the other not so tender. Wow I drove past this place many times, shame on me for not stopping by for a bite. Today I was just looking for breakfast and maaaayyyynnnn the breakfast combo!!! $8 bucks in ward is awesome, which included 2 eggs, 1 spam, 2 pocho sausage, 2 links, and 4 bacon!!!! Most places would probably cost 15-20+ bucks for that. Not to mention, it was only after my order was almost done I see a sign for $1 adder for fried rice, shucks. We'll it seems to be standard as over easy it was, so if u want scramble be sure to ask. Prior to COVID, there used to be a selection of good breakfast places in Kakaako open quite early in the morning. I usually start work early and often pick up breakfast to take to the office. However, since the pandemic, the options have dwindled. Fortunately, New Queen's Barbeque in Kakaako still opens at 5 am on weekdays. As I approach it in the early morning darkness, it appears like an oasis in an otherwise gloomy neighborhood. They have a busy and clean kitchen, and the restaurant is brightly lit. I started coming here again to expand my breakfast options. In addition to the usual bacon & eggs and loco moco, I sometimes crave something more substantial. My favorites at New Queen's so far are their Breakfast Combo with fried rice, Loco Moco, Beef Curry and Beef Stew. Three and a half stars. I enjoy the food because it's plentiful and it's decent, even the next day. I got the healthy chicken plate with brown rice and a ton of salad which I enjoy. I wish they had something healthier than ranch because I feel that takes away from it being healthy. Other coworkers ate a double cheeseburger with crinkle fries, and hamburger meat with gravy. Everything was good and the price is good too. The lady helping us is friendly and there are tables where you can enjoy your meal. The tables are plentiful and it's clean. A lot of workers are there buying breakfast as well as lunches at different times. It's a great source of inexpensive food. Went with the go to "Breakfast Combo" $6.59 which comes with rice and spam and two of everything else...bacon, Portuguese sausage, link sausage and eggs. My one absolute sadness is they never asked how I wanted my eggs and didn't realize that until I got my order and it was sunny (I HATE RUNNY YOLKS!!!) absolutely totally despise it so I never ate it. Breakfast plate itself was yummy total meat fest and you can upgrade to fried rice for a dollar which is a great deal, the next time I just need to be sure my eggs could be done scrambled lol! So many businesses I frequent right in this district, yet where have I been? They're located on the corner of Queen & Cooke Streets. Across of the new Anytime Fitness Kakaako, or a block behind of Imperial Plaza. As a cheeseburger lover, I like to try out as many restaurants, even if they aren't known for their burgers. My husband had picked up dinner one night from here, and I was like WOW!! This is frickin good!! So after my day of R&R, I swing by this place and pick up late lunch. First of all, finding parking is challenging, I drove around a few times to get a stall in front without getting towed. From my car, I called in my order of double cheeseburger and double French fries, ran out took a few pics of the place, paid and picked up my order, thank God my car was still there lol!! It seemed kinda busy even though it was almost closing time. There was a man dining in, a lady who just ordered, and a guy waiting for his order. Judging by other Yelp reviews and the menu, they're popular for plate lunches. This is a hole in the wall place that you really can't miss as most times you will see people lining up to place, or pick up their order. They are located on the corner of Queen and Cooke St. The servings are very generous and might even last you two meals. For the price you really can't go wrong. For those who have been coming here for years like myself will have noticed due to the Covid-19, the prices have gone up just a little but not that much. With that said, most places still can't touch the price and portion size. Take for example of the breakfast plates. They come with tons of rice, two eggs and lots of meat. There must of been like 8 strips of bacon and it was only $5.39. The Portuguese sausage had 5 thick pieces for the same price. The one my dad likes is the combo which consists of two eggs, 1 spam, 2 bacon and 2 Portuguese sausage and 2 link sausage and rice which was around $6 I believe. If you like your bacon a little more done like my better half does, just ask for extra crispy. Due to the pandemic, there is no sit down tables at this time, only take out. You have to wear a mask or you will not get served. They are closed on Sundays too now. The downside to this place is the parking. There is only street parking. Pro Tip: call in your order and have someone drive you so you can jump out, pay, grab your food and leave. Saw my fellow yelper Aunty Nadine C. yelp about this place and saw her picture on the mini hamburger steak plate. So I told my husband let's go and try it. He said he wanted to try their bbq short ribs. This place crowded because they serve breakfast as well as lunch. Lots of construction workers pick up and go. Their are some tables to fine in nice air conditioning too. Well the hamburger steak was ok not as moist like I thought it would be and thr macaroni salad was ok. The gravy was good. The mini come with 2 patties Mac salad and gravy on the patties and I think it was 1 scoop rice but being the rice was smash it could be 2. Don't know. My husband bbqcshort ribs he said was good taste charred ok but not burnt which was good but the 1st piece was good but 2nd piece the rib was grissley like stringy the way they cut the ribs. Great food and portion for such an affordable price. A plate is easily 2 meals for me. I've only tried their Mochiko Chicken Plate and Loco Moco Plate ($12.95 for each regular size), and both were really good. The chicken was light and crispy (not oily) with a good sweet savory flavor. My over easy egg for the Loco Moco was cooked to perfection, the patties are well seasoned, and the gravy has the perfect consistency and adds that extra flavor and moisture.
