It's been a long time since I've been to one of the iconic local plate lunch diners. They even have a drive-thru. I drove to Kalihi - usually their hours are from 600a till 900p everyday except Sunday when they close at 300p. Small parking lot in the back with a couple of stalls adjacent to their side entrance. Prices are excellent...two choice mixed plates are $13. I got their regular ( they have a mini ) Loco Moco Plate. It was nostalgic: from the hamburger patties to the brown gravy with mushrooms. I had eggs over easy. Melona slushie was fantastic as well. Service was good and the wait time was a bit over ten minutes but they were busy - I went just after 600a - and had a huge call-in order. read more

One of my co-workers offered to pick up lunch and we placed our orders at Richie's, in Kalihi. They offer a 2-choice combo plate ... I usually pick BBQ chicken and chili but the chili has been very salty as of late so we all opted for something else. I chose the Pork Guisantes and Pork Adobo ... two pork dishes, you ask? Well, most of the staff there are Filipino so I figured I couldn't go wrong choosing these. And, I was right ... both were delicious, though I would have liked more peas and peppers in the guisantes. Here we go. Richie's is back for me and I'm so glad. The test was the boneless chicken plate, no gravy but Teri sauce all over. 4 humongous chicken with awesome breading. The flavor has a little more pepper flavor now but nothing wrong with that. Mac salad is back the way I remember it. Overall very satisfied with this plate as it is 100% better than the last one I had. The employees awesome as usual, the take out microphone still scratchy but it's part of the experience. I remember during my dating days the other half talks about the saba plate, when we would drive pass Richie's, he grew up Kalihi side and would always get this plae. His childhood memories of Richie's. I didn't get to try the Saba plate that he loves so dearly. I believe they have new owners, when we visited recently to try the special combo plate he asked about the saba plate, told him sorry, no Saba plate, I don't see it on the menu. During the Summer, when I saw an Instagram reel from (@Tommy Eats) on their meat jun plate, had to give it a try, we went actually two days in a row. My hubby the meat jun snob approves! $12., can't go wrong in this economy for $12. meat jun plate. The portions are a great size. Comes with rice, mac salad. The only thing missing is the kim chee which we I had some in the fridge. This is winners! We wanted to try the mixed plate 2 choice @12.99 next time, I picked one item and the hubby picked one. My choice was the pork adobo and other half got the pork chop loco moco. The verdict: the flavor was there for the adobo but the meat isn't as tender. The other half did not like the pork chop or the mushroom gravy ( good thing I asked for gravy on the side which is an extra charge for the container) I requested for brown gravy, maybe should get the lighter one. hehe. Richie's is sorta nostalgic so don't judge a place by the look of it. They also have drive thru, pretty cool for this take out place to have a drive thru. I used the driver thru when I came back the next day for meat jun plate. Service was great, staff/owner are friendly! All in all, overall rating 3.5 stars, I would come back for the meat jun plate for the hubby, maybe try the other selections for the mixed plate combo. I heard good things about Richie's Drive Inn so today while in Kalihi I decided to stop by. Lots of parking but I chose to use the drive thru. They have this makeshift intercom positioned outside that I could barely understand what the nice lady was saying. I ordered the boneless chicken that came with rice and Mac salad covered with brown gravy. I couldn't wait to get home and try it. It was a full plate that could crave even a big guy's appetite. The chicken was good, I wish had potato salad but all in all I enjoyed my lunch. Local drive inns are getting scarce so support local. read more

This place is ok and I will continue to eat here because of their cheap menu and drive thru service. Their food is not fresh, it's still good but not made to order. Kinda like Panda Express where the food is already cooked and on a warmer. I was a little upset at my recent order. I got a 2 choice with the kalua pig & cabbage and the smoke meat. My son got a combo as well with kalua pig and something else. Anyways, when we got home I had to cut the bag since they tied a knot. When I opened my plate the 1st thing I noticed was that there was barely any kalua pig but a whole lot of cabbage hahaha. I figured they probably only had enough for one plate but since there were 2 orders they had to split that and added more cabbage. Their Mac salad tho........ fire!! But as long as I say my order, ive always gotten my correct food. So why just 3 stars? This is a picky reason, but when I ask for extra gravy, it means I like gravy. So when there's only gravy on top, it's not enough. But I understand that there may not be enough room to put gravy on each layer of meat. But it sure would be tastier. I remember enjoying the lunches from "Richie's Drive Inn" when I used to work in Kakaako many years ago. I believe the owners were Korean then. The name has remained the same, but the owners and location are much different now -- I mention the above for context, but it wouldn't be fair to compare the original business with the current one. Today, I went to Kalihi by bus just to try their plate lunch. (Traffic was heavy near the State Capitol due to the "No Kings" protest.) One of the items I remembered from the original Richie's was their Boneless Chicken, so I ordered a mixed plate of that and Beef Stew. When I walked in, I was impressed with how clean the place looked. There were two or three gentlemen behind the counter -- one took my order and another passed it to the kitchen. There was also activity at the drive-up window to the left. The staff were kept busy, but things seemed under control and organized. My order was called and I sat at one of the tables to eat. The beef stew was a bit heavier than I'm used to, but it was still enjoyable. The boneless chicken with gravy was good. Portions were generous. I'm particular about beef stew, as I grew up eating the best (Mom's). I'd rate their beef stew as fair -- but I liked the overall style and feel of the business. read more

Walked in with my husband and immediately was greeted by the two workers behind the counter - that does not happen often these days!! We took a while trying to decide what to eat and they were helpful in offering a 2 choice option if we couldn't decide - awesome customer service! I ordered Loco Moco and my husband ordered a mixed plate - little of everything. We sat down and before we could even start a game on our phone the food was ready! I was a little concerned about my Loco Moco because the gravy was so dark but it was delicious! I did not think I would finish 2 patties and 2 eggs but beat my husband. I did not try any of my husband's but throughly enjoyed it because it was gone! The only reason I gave it a 4 star and not a 5 was because there were boxes of supplies stacked all over and it made the place feel dirty. But if you're looking for good food, friendly service and reasonable prices, check them out! Would definitely go again to try more items. Next time I want to make it in time for breakfast.... Unfortunately, they were super busy and really short handed so I won't base my full judgment on this experience. We initially came here because of the awesome things we heard about the food; mainly the smoked meat. The drive through was backed up so we decided to go into the restaurant to place our order, and although there was only one person in front of me I stood there waiting for a while before anyone acknowledged me. When someone finally greeted me and took my order, I was told that they didn't have smoked meat because the person that makes it wasn't in today. I ended up ordering a mushroom chicken plate and a beef stew plate. Interestingly enough, I waited longer to order my food than I did waiting for it to be cooked. The mushroom chicken was a little tough and didn't have much flavor; the gravy was also a little bland. The French fries were good- perfectly crispy and thick cut. The macaroni salad was okay, but needed some salt. The beef stew had huge chunks of beef and carrots which were really tender, and the stew sauce itself was on the sweeter side. Although this was not the experience I expected, I understand they were short handed and definitely take that into consideration. I'll definitely be back to try other menu items, and hopefully increase my rating and review. read more

I wouldn't say it's the best food but for the price it really hits and you have a lot of choices. Today we tried mix plates. Salisbury meatballs and pork guisantes. Fish and hamburger curry. Hamburger. I'm not sure I would order the meatballs again. It's not bad but I like the serving size of the items that were more home style cooking. The gravy was good and had a lot of mushrooms! Pork and peas was very meaty and satisfying. Fish is good, just like the original fish. Hamburger curry was a heaping serving filled mixed veggies. Japanese style curry flavor. This is the second time we've been there this week. We had to try the meat Jun and that was totally worth it! Very tender and the red dipping sauce was my fave . We also got a BBQ burger and fries. The burgers are good here. Old fashioned drive inn style and it comes with lettuce. French fries are better than the old ones. Straight cut with a seasoning on them! The workers are really friendly. Someone recommended we try Richie's Drive Inn because they claimed it was better than Rainbows. We finally made our way to Richie's and it wasn't what we expected. First, it was very stuffy in the restaurant and there were flies! They make each plate fresh, and we finally got our plates. We got the mushroom chicken and BBQ beef. They were just okay. No wow factors. Thee nail that sealed the review was finding a curly hair in my mac salad. When I say "curly" I'm talking either underarm or pubic hair. I returned my plate and they gladly replaced it with another. Unfortunately I refused to eat the mac salad since it was probably from the same container my other mac salad.
