I am leery of cliche coffee places wherever we travel. This is a breed apart. I am not a coffee specialist so I can't analyze their work but it's good dark black coffee. What I really liked were their blueberry muffins. So good. Brought my daughter who said their OJ was a nice balance of juice and pulp. Worth it. read more

Good to be back home! Literally. When I lived in Saugatuck I lived right above the coffee shop and I awoke to the aroma of roasting coffee every morning. Excellent coffee and a matching atmosphere. A nice little funky coffee shop. We first went here many years ago and try to go here whenever we're visiting southwest Michigan. The coffee, other drinks, and food have always great; and the customer service has always been excellent. My hubby and I drive 100 miles to get their coffee and it's worth every minute of the drive. The quality of the coffee at Uncommon Grounds rivals Starbucks, Intelligentsia, etc. It's much better than both of those companies in my opinion. Plus Uncommon Grounds offer delicious healthy options such as their fruit/veggie juices and smoothies. We don't leave without one of us getting the Funky Monkey. It's a chocolate, espresso and banana shake that is addictive. read more

This place is so cute. We were in Saugatuck for the weekend and it was raining all day long and cold. We stopped in for a cup of coffee and it was excellent.The staff was very friendly. My friend said hers was a little sweet, but I ordered a latte that had cayenne pepper in it and it was very good. Just what I needed on a cold and rainy day. read more

Love the place whenever we visit Saugatuck. We will be staying at Maplewood B&B in a little more than a week. Early risers, we like to walk over in the very early morning (footprints in the new snow) for coffee, pastry, and reading. Only complaint is that in the past both doors were unlocked, making for a very cold draft even in the room only containing chairs on the right hand side. We love this cafe and make it a point to go here every visit we make to Saugatuck. The staff is friendly but efficient and the drinks are delicious. They have a variety of espresso drinks and even a few nutritious smoothies. The Green Machine is especially good. The cafe is often crowded but the staff does it's best to fill the orders quickly. This is a place you where you must stop and enjoy some coffee/tea/smoothie when you visit Saugatuck. read more

Wonderful and fast service! I havent had a better cup of coffee! We were visiting from Wisconsin and enjoyed the beautiful view of downtown Saugatuck, Michigan in all it's glory! It puts you right in the heart of the hussle and bustle but the atmosphere there leaves you feeling rather peaceful. Will definitely be going back next time we are in the area! My husband & I have been coming here for years - this is a MUST every time we come up to Saugatuck from Kalamazoo. It's the perfect little coffee shop - there's garden seating out back & a small porch out front when the weather is pleasant, and air conditioned relief inside when it's hot. Their Iced Brew coffee is amazing in the summer (you can even get a growler of it to go!). I've never had an espresso drink I didn't love, and they have a wide variety of loose leaf tea to enjoy, as well. If you want to go green or fruity, try their smoothies - good stuff! And don't even get me started on the baked goods - mmmm! The BEST flourless chocolate cake I've ever had, hands down! If I thought Steve would give me the recipe, it would be a staple at our house. (It's a real treat for me when I can find something gluten free to enjoy with my coffee....) If this review seems over the top, I'm sorry. Like I said, we've been coming here for years, and I never want this place to disappear, LOL! Running a small business can be a thankless job sometimes - I know - my father ran a cafe for years. Being the coffee snob I am, I truly wanted to love this place. I found the espresso drinks and coffee to be quite bitter. I work downtown Saugatuck for the summer and loved the idea of in house roasting. That being said they may have a huge clientele, but they need to keep the quality higher. I worked in an amazing coffee shop, that trained the baristas amazingly well, even had their coffee roasters come train the employees. From my knowledge the grinders should be at least 3/4ths of the way full, but every time i have been in there its so low! For all of you who say why does that matter? it affects the poor of the espresso causing it to either poor slow or fast...aka Bitter or sour. I would also love it if they rinsed the steamers after each use.The staff is so so some are very nice, others seem over worked resulting in impatience. Had a few encounters with one of the owners and expected a local owner to be a bit kinder, to each his own.Their baked goods are AMAZING. Like I said I REALLY wanted to love this place, but i have a problem with paying 5$ for a drink that is bitter and unenjoyable. read more
