When first walking into the establishment, I was extremely confused as to whether or not there was table service. I soon realized that did not exist, so onward to the bar! (Mind you, this was about 11 at night, I'm unsure if this is an all day thing). The bartender was decent I suppose, she acknowledged I was there and then forgot about me soon after. But that was okay, when she came back around I asked for her most popular cocktail . She started to make me a mojito, not a huge fan but you get what you ask for! Watching her make the drink I saw alotttttttttttttttttttt of liquor being poured in there . Right up my alley! Served right up! I'm thankful for the amount of liquor but for some reason it was watered down? Maybe the Sprite was out, or maybe that's their version... she walked away soon after I asked if I could still order food... but I waited until she came back and asked again. Lucky me! Fooodddddd So I ordered two chicken tinga tacos . They were fairly inexpensive . Came out in about 15 minutes and looked delicious! They were incredibly spicy and well , let's just say the food is what will bring me back. I'd like to try a different cocktail though, and a more personable bartender . Monday's steak night is a good excuse to visit this location. You get a choice of a 16 oz rib eye or strip steak with mashed potatoes. There were quite a few patrons there but fortunately there is plenty of seating inside and outside on a patio. Under the Volcano is well known for their frozen screwdriver and frozen rum and coke, both very good and pretty strong, so beware. The steaks came out quickly and were tasty. This was my second visit to this location and I really like the laid-back atmosphere here. A great place to sit, enjoy good music and catch up with friends. I will definitely be back. read more

This is less divey than expected, but I was pleasantly surprised. They have plenty of outdoor seating as well as tables inside. I came for the steak night though and waited under the comfort of air con. It was early so they didn't have table service until about 6, but we got drinks fairly quickly. They put a lot of effort into their cocktails, and they were strong to boot. Prices are ok. happy hour knocks a buck off a drink, which brings them to slightly more normal prices. I had an old fashioned and also tried the strawberry margarita, which was like a dessert. The steak came out just right and was very tasty. The salad that came beforehand had a good dressing as well. I've been back many many times since my original review and I must finally upgrade this place to 5 stars! I just love it so much. Going over half a year now without a sip of beer I have learned to drink more cocktails. This is and anvil are the specialists when it comes to cocktails. What makes this place a standout 5 are the frozen drinks! The frozen screwdrivers are sweet but still pack a powerful punch. The rum and cokes are also the same way. Who doesn't love a slushee? Who doesn't just melt over a slushee with alcohal?!?! But my newest discovery is this place serves food! On my recent outing for Heidi's birthday I had came straight from work and was in dire need for food. They offer sandwiches. I had the ham and cheese, with pesto mayo!!! Some of the best tasting mayo's around. I destroyed the sandwich and the side of potato salad. I can't spend all night here but it's a great pre drink place. read more

No matter how good your drink taste or how well your steak smells, if your service isn't there, then what's the point of being in the service industry? The last time I was there, it took them almost half a hour to get one drink out and the server told me that somehow someone else took my drink and they never made another one until I remind him that I never got my mixed drink. Luckily, after that incident, things were a bit better but this service (or the lack of) has always been at this location. To have the best service, simply just order at the bar because server staff definitely needs improvement on checking on his or her customer. Although the decor and the atmosphere for the bar is unique and dimly lit for a more moody feel, but all of these can not make up for the shortage of good service. I am hoping that the management will finally do something about this before I will ever come back here. read more

It is usually crowded enough you feel like the big guy (4u) bartender isn't known around town as a notorious habitual spitter and poisoner of drinks; but it is not uncomfortably packed to the brim. Expect to wait in a line for a drink. Expect drunk college kids too - probably their first time drinking, so they need to tell everyone in earshot WOOOOOOOOOOOO HOW DRUNK THEY ARE. Came here to celebrate my girlfriend's bday for happy hour this past monday and of course we had steak. I was fortunate that I was able to have her salad. Hehe... But it was okay. I don't know if they recently changed cooks or not because when we asked for Medium Rare, we got super rare, then they gave us another piece which was a nice gesture but it was cooked all the way. Not a bad dive bar! The drinks are handmade with fresh ingredients and on the strong side (yes please!). The prices are reasonable. It's dark inside, with eclectic decor and the music selection was cool. They have a "smoking allowed" patio out front and a non-smoking patio out back. Parking is a b!t*h though! There are not enough spots, so be prepared to park down the street and walk. The food was ok. I ordered the crab and shrimp ceviche type appetizer and it was really good. It came with a lot of ceviche and chips. A friend ordered the ltalian queso and it was just so-so. Another friend ordered the cheese and meat plate. The brie was good but some of the prosciutto was impossible to naw through. We had pretty good service, our waiter was nice and patient and even offered up recomendations on drinks. This was a great place very cool vibe! I went for steak night and I had the rib eye. It was cooked perfectly and was delicious. The steak came with mashed potatoes and a chimichuri sauces that I couldn't stop putting on my steak! We ordered the corn dip appetizer and my husband devoured it. It was very chunky and not my style. We also got the trio and each sauce was really good especially the queso. I got the brie cheese plate and I loved it. The brie came with crackers caramelized pecans and a chipotle jam that paired really good. I also had a watermelon margarita which had a slush taste to it. I enjoyed my drink. A fun, kitschy little Rice Village bar on Bissonnet. Fun decor, fun drinks, great sounding bar snacks (although I've never tried any)! I've been a couple of times now, and most of the times I've gone (on the weekends) it's really busy. But it's definitely a fun place to day drink on a Sunday afternoon. Under the Volcano is a bit of a conundrum. The small menu is a bit all over the place - not in any way that makes sense. I had a margarita that was......sour. It was all sour mix. Not a fan AT ALL. So, I decided to go with something more simple for my next drink: vodka and soda with lime. Nope. All soda. I ordered El Trio (Salsa roja, salsa verde and white queso served w/ tortilla chips) to start. The chips were obviously pre-packaged chips. Fine, except that they tasted like cardboard. Seriously. The dips were nothing to write home about. I tried the pork tamales. Meh - also okay. I also had the beef empanada. Once again, very bland. The staff was very nice. There is way too much hype on the frozen screwdrivers. I tried that and it was very good, but not the I-don't-mind-standing-six-deep-and waiting-20-plus-minutes-for-one-drink-good. Even at the patio out back with a waitress it still took about that long to get a drink. Or even longer, considering you had to wait about 10-15 minutes to place the order, and then another 10-15 minutes for her to come back with it. As crowded and pricey some of the drinks were ($9.75 for the frozen screwdriver) why doesn't this place hire more staff??? If I could get the drinks quicker I may have downed more than just one and possibly be a much more relaxed (therefor happy) customer. However after the run around to find a parking spot, then the wait for my drink, then the wait to place a food order, then the wait to pay...I was just plain disgruntled. To top that off when I paid for my order the waitress never gave me my change back. I had to chase her down and remind her before I could leave. I ordered a sandwich and only finished half. There just didn't seem to be any taste in it...until I got to the last corner and then was hit with a massive amount of...vinegar? Eeeck. The potato salad was good though. The only other thing I really liked about this bar were the lights/lanterns hanging up and down the bar. They were beautiful, and each one unique. So that pitches good potato salad, nice lights, and okay frozen screwdriver versus bad parking, super slow service, and an unbalanced sandwich...the final verdict? I would like this place so much better if it wasn't annoyingly crowed and super duper slow! Maybe I should try coming back on off peak hours, or in hotter weather. I really loved Under the Volcano (hoping to come back soon to get even more great pics of their food). I came in for brunch with some friends and was no let down. I wasn't sure what to expect, so when I walked in and saw all of the sugar skulls and masks, it was a pleasant surprise. I always enjoy a restaurant that goes all out in creating the perfect vibe. The restaurant is very spacious so there is more than enough room for big parties. I got a basic brunch plate and it was out of this world. I'll just start with saying that the portion was large and the cost was not (always a plus). I don't usually eat bacon, but their jalapeno bacon is probably the best bacon I have ever had. Getting eggs over-hard can be a hit or miss, but they got it right on the mark! This was also my first time eating grits that weren't made by me or a member of my immediate family.....so glad I took the chance. All and all, Under the Volcano is amazing and I can not wait to come back in for lunch. The only reason I didn't give five stars is because there was a bit of confusion when ordering, but nothing that would keep me from coming back (obviously). read more

We come here often enough, nice neighborhood bar, nothing fancy. Very chill, dark inside. I like to get one the their cocktails-always tasty with the ceviche. The ceviche is decent size, easy to share as a midday snack. We hang out in Rice most the time so we'll stop in often enough. Parking lot is small and can fill up quickly on the weekends so just make sure you park in a spot you won't get towed. read more

Came here on a whim my last night in Houston. Lots of outdoor seating (front and back patio) and space to move around inside. The decor is mellow, low lighting inside and on the front patio set a relaxing mood. I did try the strawberry basil margarita and it really is great. The flavors are subtle, though I wouldn't drink 10 of them in one sitting. The bloody marys were something of interest, I didn't get a chance to try them though.. If you are a smoker, there is plenty of space for you to do so. Also, if the front bar is crowded try the one on the back patio, it was alway empty! An unfortunate ending to our night. We visited Under the Volcano for my friend's bachelorette party. The bartender ID'd us every time we went to the bar for drinks despite having tabs open already. She had a very disrespectful attitude and was incredibly condescending in a "my bar my rules" kind of way. We were trying to close our tabs towards the end of the night. Before I could even put cash down to pay, she said "thanks for not tipping" with an attitude. I commented that her customer service was less than ideal and she proceeded to tell us to "get the fuck out" and screamed at us to leave. I revisited this spot after 6 or more years. The best drink I've had here is and was the Pisca Sour, not too sweet, not too sour, just the perfect balance! But, it's a relatively small drink. I've tried their strawberry basil margarita but it's too sweet for my taste. Last time, I had Mojito, it was strong but too minty. GET THE BUENOS AIRES TACO. You're welcome, it's amazing. The homemade guac was also incredibly good, very flavorful and full of fresh ingredients. With a "tiki-ish" feel Volcano's has a great atmosphere, vibe, feel or whatever you want to call it. The place is always busy to some degree. The bartenders are not only really cool (and in most cases really attractive) but also know their beers and liquors quite well. The decor is the most overlooked detail about Under the Volcano. At the bar in the corner there is a really cool carved post and the wall to the left of the main bar area has some really awesome masks. The jukebox is in the opposite corner and has some very interesting and eclectic music selections. I see ads and posters for the live music they have going on during the week. Live music seems to fit this place well and I will surely try and make it out to a show. I am a beer kind of guy so I usually hit the stuff on tap and in most cases a bottle of Chimay Red. When it was suggested by one of the bartenders to try the frozen screwdriver I did and it was awesome! I will stick to my beer though. Last night we stumbled into a Rice Alumni party. It is interesting how much a 22oz beer glass, referencing Valhalla and speaking with better syntax gets people to believe you went to Rice. I pretended to be pretentious and there was moderate success. But, I cant act act like a total jerk for too long. It was generally a good time messing around. Dropped in for Sunday brunch on a whim. You must figure out on your own that there is no table service. After approaching the bar I was told to order and pay there. I had the Rib tips brunch plate which came with poblano cheese grits, scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, Brioche toast and blackberry preserves. The grits has good enough flavor but the were dry and stiff. The rib tips were seasoned nicely but were also very dry and the scrambled eggs were over cooked for my personal liking. The fresh fruit was nonexistent. I enjoyed my coffee and my $3 Mimosa. Stopped by with a few friends for a bachelorette party the night of March 11th. There were two bartenders, a curly haired woman and one with mid length brown hair. I ordered a round of shots and gave my ID to he curly haired woman. The shots got poured and the woman with straight hair stormed over and asked for all of our IDs with a debit card with the same names. We understood that it was standard procedure and didn't think anything of it. My fiancé insisted on buying us the round so I gave her his card, which she took and kept to keep the tab open. I placed a $20 on the bar as a tip and grabbed the shots while the rest of the gang ordered their drinks. We sat in the corner on the patio and there was one other table of people out there who finished their drinks and left within 30 minutes of us being there. At this point it was just the six of us in the corner on the patio, we were having a really good time celebrating our bachelorette. Every single time one of us went to order another drink or a round of shots (we only ordered 2 rounds of shots the entire night and each of us maybe had 2 drinks otherwise. We were not trying to be rowdy or incapacitate ourselves; we were there from 10:43 pm to 1:07 am as confirmed by the tracking system on my phone, so that averages out to two drinks a person/hr) the straight haired bar tender who originally took our IDs asked to see the ID again. She had been very rude at every interaction and treated us with a demeaning manner - even if we had ordered through the curly haired bar tender. Around 1am we walked into the main bar area to close our tabs and the moment the straight haired bartender saw us she kind of hollered at us "we're closed ladies" which is fine, but the bar hours stayed the place was open until 2am and we didnt receive the courtesy of a last call before she made this statement. It wasn't a point of contention as we had walked in to pay up and leave. Before I closed out I went and gave another $20 to the curly haired bar tender for the exceptional service she provided. It was my understanding that they all share tips. I approached the straight hair bartender to close my tab, which was around $65, she grabbed the card that she initially took and said she needed a card that matched the name on my ID because people "often call back the next day and refute charges which come out of [her] paycheck" which is the first time I had encountered such a demand, even being a bartender myself for a number of years. I stated that my fiancé wanted to buy us drinks and that his card was my form of payment. I asked her to run it as I knew it would go through and even offered to give him a call or FaceTime him to verify his identity. She refused and berated me. I ended up paying the tab in cash and before I could pick my change up off the counter and open my wallet to get the proper bills for a tip she said "and thanks for not tipping." At this point I had already tipped $40 on a tab that ended up being $65. This was the point in which I had had enough of being treated poorly by her and did not place an additional tip on the counter. I replied to her tipping comment with "not for you" at which point a friend said that she had provided us with fantastic customer service (obvious sarcasm). To this she responded with "you all can go fuck yourselves" as we left. Outside of the treatment we received from the straight haired bartender for the entirety of our visit we really enjoyed our time there and the drinks were all very good. The curly haired bar tender was extremely kind and was obviously treated poorly by the straight hair bartender as well. We'd love to visit again but without the abuse of the straighter haired woman. read more
