OK this place got me, I had it book mark for couple month. I went on Monday night their steak night. Their parking lot is sort of small, but it had plenty of parking, as well as street parking. This place had plenty of outdoor seating, and the indoor settings is kind of limited to the bar area and couple tables. Their steak night carries great steak plate and very economical prices. The riblets appetizer is great for starter, and the dipping sauce was amazing. Of course the star of the meal was the rib eye steak. The portion was pretty generous, the marinating on the steak was point on. What a amazing experience, oh yeah the service was great and eveyrone was very friendly. definitely worth the try. read more

I recent stopped by here for an aft dinner drink. As always, service was less than good. I oped for a Manhattan. Drink was fine, but the glass came out half full. I know this was a less than standard drink, because I have had this drink here multiple times. This is not a bad place, just terribly inconsistent. A/C works really well. read more

Under the Volcano is a really fun bar and has a great Dia de los Muertos theme. They have a lot of different fresh cocktails they make and have a frozen screwdriver available every day. My favorite cocktail at Under the Volcano is definitely without a doubt their strawberry basil margarita. It has just enough sweetness from the strawberries and the basil gives it a nice refreshing quality, it is fantastic! The bar has a ton of indoor seating inside by the bar and in separate rooms. There is also outdoor seating if that is more your thing. The parking lot is not huge but you might get lucky finding a spot if you are there early. They do offer food but I have never had any food just drinks. read more

Under the Volcano is a bit of a conundrum. The small menu is a bit all over the place - not in any way that makes sense. I had a margarita that was......sour. It was all sour mix. Not a fan AT ALL. So, I decided to go with something more simple for my next drink: vodka and soda with lime. Nope. All soda. I ordered El Trio (Salsa roja, salsa verde and white queso served w/ tortilla chips) to start. The chips were obviously pre-packaged chips. Fine, except that they tasted like cardboard. Seriously. The dips were nothing to write home about. I tried the pork tamales. Meh - also okay. I also had the beef empanada. Once again, very bland. The staff was very nice. They came around and picked up empties and such. However, bad drinks and bad food....I won't be back. read more

I've been here many times but hadnt been in awhile and I went last night with a big group and the two women bartenders were awful. At one point I had to ask my friend if I was invisible. The two women bartenders were talking about one of their boyfriends, calling him a d***head and all other names while my friend and I stood there with our credit cards in hand. They saw us and continued to have their heated conversation. After about 2 minutes I said excuse me and they looked at me and kept talking. Then when they finished their flowery conversation they finally asked for my drink order. Then at the end of the night I asked a simple question about the number of tacos in an order and she acted like I asked her an impossible question. The atmosphere is great but the service was horrible. The food runners were helpful though. Guacamole was bland, really just smashed avocado, chips good, beef tacos decent. read more

This place is blazing hot! I lava Under the Volcano! Let's start at the beginning: On a Monday, it took some patience to get a parking spot in the little parking lot. You can park in the neighborhood but I was told by a local to be gone by 11 or else get towed. Originally the plan was to go for coffee but then drinks was suggested, so we decided to have both. You have 6 coffee choices all my favorite kind of coffee. Spiked. I am not really a coffee drinker unless there's alcohol in it. Call me an incipient alcoholic. I went with Mexican Coffee, because I only live "Juans"! As we ordered our first on tap beer, we were pleasantly surprised it was steak night. Explains why the parking lot is full on a Monday night. I'm that person that cheers when Ferdinand and his friends escape, cries when they went to the chopper, all while eating my medium rare stake thinking, Guapo is that you? The salad was small but fantastic, and I'm not a friend of salad. Steak was excellent, just how I like it. For dessert I went with the frozen screwdriver. This combination Mexcian Coffee, Beer, and Screwdriver was perfect for doing stupid things faster with more energy. I have no regrets! Very cool decorations! There are full face masks on the walls and they've cleverly added covid face coverings which are very appropriate for today. There is plenty of outdoor seating and drinks are ordered inside with socially distanced markings on the floor. The drinks are great and especially loved the lichee drink. I also had a taste of the pisco sour and the strawberry margarita which where both amazing! The staff even gave us a free vodka shot with paprika and was very tasty! I stopped by Under the Volcano on a Monday and this is my kind of bar. First off, pretty cool name. I didn't hear any eruptions while there or step on any lava but I was cautious. They have a decent-sized dirt parking lot but it was full so we found parking on a side street close by. As you walk in, they have several patio sections, a dining area, and a bar area. We sat in the dining area at a booth. Their steak night is what reeled us in. Every Monday, you can get a house salad and a sirloin or ribeye with mashed potatoes for $18. The catch? You have to order a drink to take part in the steak night special. A good amount of bars have steak nights but almost all of them offer ribeye. It was nice to find a spot that has something different. A solid steak and it was grilled just right. The mashed potatoes were good too. Outside of steak night, they have other food too. It's mostly Mexican i.e. tortas, tacos, chips and queso, etc. but they also have some other options on the menu like baked brie. The drinks are another reason to come. They have a bunch of craft cocktails, I went with a strawberry basil margarita which comes with slices of strawberry. They also have frozen drinks like frozen mojitos and frozen screwdrivers. The vibe is also pretty awesome. It's dimly lit inside and they have a lot of cool decorations including a bunch of masks in the bar area. Service was great all-around. I definitely need to come back and try some more of their craft cocktails! read more

I went on a Monday when they had their steak night special. It was my first time here and the ambiance was laid back and intimate. As for the food, I loved the mashed potatoes but I found that the steak had a lot of fat for my liking. Another thing to note is that if you would like to dine out on the patio know that they allow smoking. So if you're not a fan of the smell I suggest dining inside. read more

I've loved this place for years. It's a cozy place and the drinks are great. I'm partial to the frozen screwdriver. I haven't had it in awhile, but the strawberry basil mojito was great as well. I have never tried the food, but always appears to be great. My two complaints are that the parking can really suck and they sometimes are not good at bussing there tables. If you're looking for a unique, chill bar, this is your place. Is dedicated to the Dia de Los Muertes and the classic novel: Under the Volcano. Food: 4/5 it was a good meal, but my steak contained a lot of fats around it. so i had to cut around it. I also paired it with frozen screwdriver, and let me tell you, I LOVED IT. i will definitely stopped by during their HH to get it. if you want something girly and sweet, try the strawberry basil margarita. Service: 5/5 Our server was really nice, i was scared at first because their system was a bit different, "sit wherever you like and the server will come". but surprisingly she was very attentive and took care of us. Everyone's talking about steak nights, so I want to talk about live music nights. That's on Wednesdays, when they set up a live band in the room across from the bar. There are a few bar tables and bench seats available, but everyone mostly stands around and watches the band or dances. Getting a drink is super convenient, because the bar is right there. Under the Volcano has an Old Mexico vibe to it, with the walls of funky protective masks and the glass cases with Dia de los Muertos shrines. It's dark and rustic, and has a variety of spaces available, should you want to eat and drink and chat (three indoors, and two outdoor covered patios). They have a number of beers on tap, including some outstanding St. Arnold's brewery offerings. They also have fancier theme drinks and can mix up whatever you desire from their full bar. Food is available in the form of appetizers, tacos, and sandwiches. There are some vegetarian dishes, and everything we ordered was fresh and well-prepared (smoked salmon tacos, Italian queso and chips, ham sandwich, pulled pork tacos). Bands come from Austin and other parts of TX to play here on Wednesdays, and you can call or check their website for a schedule. The cover is usually $10, which goes to the band. Live music can be loud, so bring some earplugs just in case. Parking is available in the small attached lot or along the nearby streets. There are signs warning not to leave valuables in your car, because it's Houston, even though it's a nice neighborhood. But hey, that's a good practice anywhere you park. read more

Been to the volcano four times now. Every time the place has been packed and my girlfriend complains that she can't find anywhere to sit. But the drinks are amazing which is why I keep coming back! Love sipping on a frozen rum and coke or their screwdrivers. Their ritas aren't bad either. The design is Aztec/Mexican?? Lots of tribal masks on the wall and other interesting pieces of art. Considering that Ive got so many friends that love this place and the fact that they make a heck of a drink, chances are I will be back! read more

I don't hang around in the Village that much these days so I hardly ever come here. Dropped in during the weekend for some afternoon drinks and snacks. They always have a good selection of beers, along with some wines and cocktails. The space is kind of a hodge podge; inside, outside, rooms, benches... The patio spaces are slightly enclosed, so if there are a lot of smokers the smoke doesn't always dissipate fast enough. To eat, we got an antipasto plate, which turned out to be better than expected. It came with a nice selection of brie, ham, salami, proscuitto, smoked cheddar, marinated olives and mushrooms, pear, roasted red pepper hummus, and the real kicker, some awesome mustard. One of my favorite little-known spots. Went here for the first time since Covid and the vibe is still chill and decor funky! We got the strawberry basil margaritas which I remember being a little better balanced (these were a little too tart) but probably just because the strawberries are not as sweet in October. Slow braised beef tacos and Buenos Aires tacos were a hit. We also enjoyed the queso and chips. But the empanadas left a lot to be desired. I'm biased because I lived in Buenos Aires so I have a pretty high standard for great empanadas but my date wasn't into them either so, it wasn't just me. Let your pisco sour sit a bit, mixed it around your glass, and then drink. The second one was way better than the first once I figured that out. I've been coming here since 2012 and Steak Night Monday don't get any better than this place! And let me just say that you don't need the A1 sauce when you've got that amazing tangy chimichurri sauce. It's like a love match made in heaven! Under The Volcano is a unique bar, unlike most bars. The interior give me a "Día De Los Muertos" vibe, with all the candles, masks, etc. It's such a unique place! They are know for their screwdrivers and their frozen Cuba libres, which I love! Just be careful because they will creep up on you. Parking can be a bit difficult if you come late. But you can always park around the neighborhood. The staff is friendly, the service is good (not great), but the food makes up for it. I love this place so much that I come here on my own and sit at the bar to eat my steak. The bartenders are so welcoming that I don't feel like I'm eating alone. I totally recommend you try their steak night. You won't regret it. read more

I've been dying to come here for steak Night and I finally had the time to do so. Parking is a little tight but you can park across the street after 5 pm. We sat on the patio (first come first serve) and ordered out steaks. (Ribeye, Salad, Mashed Potatoes) Our order literally came out in 5 minutes. The ribeye was flavorful but over cooked. I ordered medium they gave me well done :( I didn't feel like dealing with the hassle of sending it back. I did however enjoy the mashed potatoes and $5 off a bottle of wine. I love that you're allowed to take your bottle home with you. Other than the steaks being cooked at the wrong temperature everything was great. Would definitely return for Steak night. read more

What a cool little spot in Houston. I'm not familiar with the Houston area, I've only been a couple of times for work. My co-workers decided to have a couple of drinks here before we headed out to dinner. It's got a cool, funky vibe. Kind of like a Mexican tiki bar. They have sugar skulls everywhere and it was around Christmas, so they all had little Santa hats on, it was super cool. They also had an enclosed alter dedicated to someone, which I thought was touching. The bartender was really sweet and made a very tasty mojito. I'm always in search of a steak night, and this might just be my favorite steak night after my 1st visit. Came for their steak night on Monday 6-10pm and was not disappointed! You seat yourself and a waiter will be right with you. The service can be kinda slow, but given it was steak night and my water was always filled... I had no problem. The only catch to their $18 steak night is that you have to order a drink with it (and it doesn't have to be alcoholic). For $18, you get a salad, mash potatoes, and your choice of a 16 oz angus ribeye (this is what I got) or strip steak. I loved their house sesame raspberry vinaigrette for their salad and the chimichurri sauce for their steak! They got it right with the sauces. Steak nights at other places can sometimes be dry or overlooked, so I was overjoyed by how juicy and cooked just as I asked-- medium. For my drink, i got a frozen screwdriver which isn't on the menu. Although I enjoyed it, I didn't think it was strong so if you enjoy a light drink, I would try this! Will definitely be back for steak night again! They also have happy hour 2pm-7pm Monday to Friday and brunch Sunday 10am-3pm that I might just check out sometime. read more

This place has an awesome Monday Steak Night! You choose between a ribeye or a strip steak. You get a 16oz cut for less than $20. It's paired with a pretty tasty salad and mashed potatoes. It also comes with a side of what I think was chimichuri sauce. Whatever it was, it was delish! My only gripe is they kept serving me flat drinks. Both my Brut champagne (don't judge me lol) and my raspberry cider were flat, like they had sat around open for awhile Anyhoo, I liked the eclectic music, weird decor and tasty steak. Went here with some friends after work. The decor of this place is a "Day of the dead" them and it's awesome. I love there specialty drinks so go if your wanting to switch things up a bit from your normal. The only realm giving a 3 stars is the food was awful and not fresh. We ordered the Ceviche and cocktail and honestly we sent it back. I was nervous to eat it I didn't want to get sick. The last two times it's been very tough and the temperature never comes out right. Last time I ordered medium and it came out well done, so I asked if they could fix it and it came out somehow even more well than the first steak. Monday's steak night is a good excuse to visit this location. You get a choice of a 16 oz rib eye or strip steak with mashed potatoes. There were quite a few patrons there but fortunately there is plenty of seating inside and outside on a patio. Under the Volcano is well known for their frozen screwdriver and frozen rum and coke, both very good and pretty strong, so beware. The steaks came out quickly and were tasty. This was my second visit to this location and I really like the laid-back atmosphere here. A great place to sit, enjoy good music and catch up with friends. I will definitely be back. read more
