This place has super cool vibes and amazing decoration to set the ambience for this Hawaiian themed bar/ restaurant. We tried their white queso, chicken tinga taco, beef taco, salmon taco and their chicken curry empanada. Overall selection very interesting and not bad. Definitely an array of different cultures combined and was pleasantly surprised. I would suggest having an open mind and pallet to match when visiting. This isn't a place for the weak minded.. or weak stomachs. As I like to try odd/weird things from time to time.. I had no choice but to try the horseradish Margarita... not my favorite. It was our first time in and I really loved the eclectic decor of the restaurant, we had the guacamole and empanadas all of which were delicious. I think the watermelon margarita is one of the best in Houston. I'm giving this place 3 stars solely based on the service, there is no table service which is fine, you have to order at the bar. It took a really long time for anyone to acknowledge us despite multiple people walking by and making eye contact. We finally decided to try and get the attention of the girl behind the bar, she looked at us and walked the opposite way. It just wasn't a great first impression, we might go back and give it another try, hopefully we'll get friendlier and more attentive staff. read more

FOOD My friend's order was beef empanadas, tacos, and white queso. Mine was mojito, Mexican coffee, Brioche french toast with a side of scrambled eggs, and a beef empanada. The mojito was a bit more bitter than sweet. I'm used to sweeter mojitos. They have been voted as the #1 mojito. Not a fan. The french toast was not soggy so that's a plus. It comes with whipped cream on top, a side of agave nectar and chocolate sauce. Used only the chocolate sauce and it taste like its dark chocolate. The whipped cream was too much and had to remove most of it. The mexican coffee was ok. You can taste the liqueur used. Not too sweet. The Empanadas....they are made to order and have a flaky crust. October 31st. I'd been wanting to try a new steak night in Houston. Searched for Monday steak nights near me, Under the Volcano popped up. After checking out the pictures and making sure the steak nights were still on Monday's, I headed there. There was parking, though the lot is small. Not sure if I recall another lot behind the building and street parking. But the only thing on my mind was secured my parking spot (when I go back I will be sure to confirm lol). They have patio seating, which you can see as you approach the entrance. You can sit where ever you like but you have to oorder at the bar. The steaks aren't on the menu by the way. There are 2 choices, the Ribeye or the New York strip served with garlic mashed potatoes and a side salad. Me being the inquisitive person I am. I google the difference between both. The Ribeye has more fat, so I opted for the New York Strip. I'm not much of a drinker, so didn't really explore the drink menu much. I just order a glass of Rose to go with my meal. They serve your salad first unlike most steak nights at bars. Plating everything together at once. Now lets get into the best part..the reason your reading this. The reason I'm writing this. THE FOOD. The mashed potatoes! Flavor of garlic in every bite. They were a whipped fluffy consistency, evenly seasoned, topped with green onions. AND THE STEAK! I ordered mine medium rare. So flavorful, tender, I thought about this steak the next day. Like I wondered if they marinated it overnight to get the flavor in the meat like that or was it just for a few hours. Whatever they did, do continue! The wine, steak, potatoes and salad had me in a slumber half way through. So good but so full. I could not finish even if I wanted to. Boxed the rest to go. Came here for happy hour on Friday and was pleasantly surprised, good vibes all around. We have been driving past this place for 2 years and only recently noticed it and wanted to give it a try. You order at the bar and my husband and I started with a mojito and pisco sour and both were delish. Pisco sour was essentially a frothy margarita without ice and sugar rim. They have a large range of cocktails so in the spirit of trying new things I got a Pimm's cup next, which was also refreshing and easy to drink, however vastly different from a Pisco sour. Our friends tried the Lychee cocktail (go ahead and skip, tasted like straight rum and no lychee flavor even though you can see it floating around) and the Malta fizz and añejo old fashioned, which they enjoyed much more! As far as food goes, the tacos and empanadas were great, our favorites being the Buenos Aires tacos. The rib ends were just ok, a little dry in my opinion but that chimichurri sauce that came with it was absolute fire. Overall, would visit again! read more

After finding this spot on a whim late on a Thursday evening, I was so pleased by Under the Volcano's creative drink selections and laid-back vibes. Sort of a pub-meets-cantina, this place offers plenty of comfortable seating and dark, romantic lighting while serving up some really creative spins on classic and Mexican cocktails. We started with a couple of really excellent Mexican martinis, and followed that up with a refreshing strawberry basil margarita for her and a stunning horseradish pomegranate margarita for me. It was one of the tastiest and most unexpected drinks I have had this year. Not exactly sure why it's called under the volcano but I am a fan. The place is dimly lit with lots of wood and masks everywhere. The area we sat in was dimly lit like the rest of the place but it gave it a very secretive feeling. Almost like we were meeting there for a proletariat meeting to be part of the red army. But I guess that's just my mind playing tricks on me because I took a Soviet history class in undergrad and this is what I imagined it to be like except substitute a gulag for a patio. I came here for the steak night on Monday. You get a pretty darn amazing ribeye for $18 + beverage + gratuity + tax. My steak was cooked to a perfect medium well and I was very happy the way they had seasoned it. It comes with a side of garlicky mashed potatoes which are the creamiest. It also comes with a side salad prior to your steak is served which has an interesting flavor profile (think sesame oil meets balsamic) to the dressing. The steak, I'm pretty sure, is seasoned with your run of the mill steak sauces but it's so good! I cannot wait to return to try their regular menu. I've been coming to this bar for over 4 years and it is one of my favorite hidden gems. The drinks are a great price, perfectly poured. They have great daily drink and food specials and the bartenders are friendly. DO NOT GO TO UNDER THE VOLCANO: I'm not one to post negative reviews and love to support small businesses. However, the owner Peter Mitchell kicked out a service dog and it's handler. The handler provided all legally required information and stated that he was a disabled veteran. Peter would not allow the couple and service dog to sit and have a drink. He raised his voice and told them to leave. The dog was very well behaved and stood quietly by the owners side the entire time. A unique and cool place. We stopped here for a drink after Murder by the Book. The place has unique look and food, with such things as Italian queso. We only ordered some drinks and chips and salsa. We sat and looked at our books, Shana got a cocktail and I got a margarita and looked around. We were there on a Sunday during brunch, which is before 3 pm, you had to order at the bar then sit. They brought the food but all ordering was done by getting up and going to the bar. I assume at busier times that is not so but I don't know. They had masks on the wall, several rooms and an outside porch sitting area. Decent sized parking lot that is gravel or dirt. The chips were ok and the salsa was spicy. First time here! We came here for steak night! $18 for a 16oz ribeye (or strip), garlic mash potatoes, and a side salad! Let me first start out with the parking situation. We came around 9pm and were able to find a parking spot in the main parking lot. They have a nice size patio with plenty of tables and chairs. The server who took care of us was very friendly, very attentive, and did an amazing job helping us navigate through their menu of drinks and food items (I already knew I was getting the steak)!! We ordered a bottle of red wine (Zolo Malbec) they offer $5 off bottles of wine btw! My wife went with the salmon tacos, and a side of garlic mash potatoes. She loved the tacos!! The salmon was tasty, seemed fresh, and went really well with the cabbage and pico! My steak I ordered med rare, it came out exactly how I like it!! It was very tender, flavorful, and just the right amount of marbling that I love on a ribeye. The salad was great as well. Definitely love the in house dressing they use. The garlic mash potatoes were very good (filing), the chimichurri sauce was PERFECT! Loved it!! All in all I (we) give this place 5 stars! It was my first time at Under the Volcano and it did not disappoint. I looked at other reviews for information but a majority of them were older so I didn't know what to expect. This place caught my attention due to the Day of the Dead decor and Latin American inspired look. I noticed it serves a full menu but I specifically went there with friends for steak night. The ambiance was great with plenty of seating inside and out. The location has a small parking but is also equipped with street parking. It is also dog friendly in the patio area. Staff was great and the food came out fast. I opted for a strawberry lemonade which was made right before me! It was hand squeezed and very flavorful. Our steak order came with a salad and a side of mashed potatoes. I had the New York strip and it was delicious! The size, the taste, and the chimichurri sauce compliment each other nicely. As a fan of mashed potatoes I was not disappointed! All great portions for just 24 dollars! Definitely recommend and will be returning for drinks or another steak night. read more

I went to try the screwdriver drink and was highly disappointed. I wasnt feeling the old decor or the bar as a whole. The people that dropped by seemed to be regulars who frequent the place. My favorite steak night in Houston! Monday steak night for $18 includes a side salad (with the best dressing ever), 16oz ribeye, and mashed potatoes. Available from 6-10pm. Super cheap, but the catch is you have to order a drink with your meal. FYI, it does not have to be alcoholic. Food: Generous portion size. I share the 16oz steak with my boyfriend and get an extra salad. We are always stuffed by the end of our meal! Steak seasoning was spot on. Pairs perfectly with the fresh chimichurri sauce on the side. The salad dressing is so addicting here! And mashed potatoes are always whipped/creamy. Parking: I have never been able to park in the actual parking lot. It's pretty small. But there's ample amount of parking across the street. I've been here many times but hadnt been in awhile and I went last night with a big group and the two women bartenders were awful. At one point I had to ask my friend if I was invisible. The two women bartenders were talking about one of their boyfriends, calling him a d***head and all other names while my friend and I stood there with our credit cards in hand. They saw us and continued to have their heated conversation. After about 2 minutes I said excuse me and they looked at me and kept talking. Then when they finished their flowery conversation they finally asked for my drink order. Then at the end of the night I asked a simple question about the number of tacos in an order and she acted like I asked her an impossible question. So, I've been to the Volcano a few times, but never ordered up a drink! (Sometimes you gotta sober up.) The frozen screwdrivers and frozen rum 'n' Cokes were a hit with our table, but I wanted to try this strawberry basil margarita everyone yelps about ... aka the salad. Yup, this drink was half strawberry chunks and huge leaflets of basil and half room-temp margarita. Total disappointment. So second round, I went straight for the Saint Arnold Summer Pils, which they were out of, natch. So I ended up with Duvel, which pleased my palate considering, well, it's Duvel. The bartender that tended to my tab was friendly and worked as fast as she could go, pummeling cocktails and serving us a variety of bevs without giving the "why can't you peeps order the same drank!" face.
