I've had Ramen at a number of different restaurants, in multiple different countries, and so far I think UNDERBELLY is gonna be my favorite. Just looking to try something new when we are visiting San Diego for Comic-Con, we found this awesome spot. First of all, the place looks amazing. From the neon lights to the incredibly unique liquor pods (I don't even know what else to call them), this place is just freaking cool to see with your eyes. And on this, our first visit, we had to wait in line for a little bit, but there's so much to look at, plus we were a group having great conversation, we didn't mind it. You're waiting in line outside, as this is a very small but place which very effectively takes advantage of every space inside for seating. There is upstairs dining, downstairs dining, bar seating, and even outdoor seating. On this visit, we sat upstairs, which involves climbing a very cool little spiral staircase to get up there. The bathroom is also very cool with what I can only guess is a Japanese bidet, which I did not even try to use the functions on it because it just looked too techy for me. But the bathroom was clean. Now let's get to the food. It was excellent. As I said before, I think this is my favorite Ramen, because it came with so much good stuff. I opted for the "Belly of the Beast", which came with oxtail dumplings, in addition to some short ribs and fungus. The flavor was outstanding. They take your order when you first arrive, and then they bring the food to you. The service was fast and friendly, there was just such a really cool vibe in there, our entire group loved it. Several of us got drinky drinks, which were all good, and we also shared an order of the bao buns, which were also very delicious. So if you're in the San Diego area, and you've got a hankering for some noodles (or excellent food in general), you absolutely gotta try out UNDERBELLY.

Always a good time here. I love the ramen but it is a shame they're giving less portions these days. They used to give you a whole egg and now only half an egg. Feels cheap on the owners end.

Came here for a late dinner to try some place new. You order and pay at the cashier then find a seat. We chose to sit upstairs. There's about 4 tables upstairs in a loft style seating. It did get a bit warm because there was no breeze despite the windows downstairs being open. It was a nice night and we should've chose to sit outside. It's very dark upstairs so made it difficult to see the food. We ordered a variety of foods and each had our own ramen. The ramen wasn't the best ramen. The noodles didn't taste like they were fully cooked. The sides were delicious. We got 2 types of bao buns which were delicious. The wings we ordered with sweet and spicy flavoring and that was also delicious. We tried it, don't know that I would return unless I was craving the wings or bao buns and I would definitely sit outside if I did.

Counter service and limited seating but worth the wait! The ramen was full of flavor, even the vegetarian ramen. My daughter loved the beef gyoza. The house made lemonade is delightful and not overly sweet. Definitely has a Tokyo/cyberpunk vibe.

Some restaurants become part of your travel memories & Underbelly is absolutely one of those places for us. When we visited San Diego back in 2016, we ate at Underbelly twice because it was just that good. Returning this trip felt a little like revisiting an old friend. And I'm happy to report... it was every bit as awesome as we remembered! The best part? The staff affectionately called us "O.G.'s" when they heard we had been longtime fans, which immediately made us feel welcome & set the tone for a fun dining experience. We started with the kimchi because some traditions simply should not be broken. Tangy, punchy, spicy & full of flavor, it was the perfect opening act before the ramen arrived. I opted for the Tonkotsu Ramen: rich tonkotsu broth, soft boiled egg & chashu pork. The broth was deeply savory & comforting, the pork tender & flavorful, that perfectly soft egg tied everything together beautifully. It was exactly what ramen dreams are made of. Hubby went with the Underbelly Ramen, extra spicy: tonkotsu broth, soft boiled egg, chashu belly & adobo pulled pork. The extra spice brought serious heat & he was thrilled with every fiery bite! There is something incredibly satisfying about returning to a restaurant years later & finding that the magic is still there. Underbelly delivered the same bold flavors, cozy ramen comfort & cool Little Italy energy that made us fall in love with it the first time around. Not every restaurant earns a repeat visit nearly a decade later & even fewer live up to the memory. Underbelly absolutely did. We will be O.G.'s forever! NOM NOM NOM #YUM

Me and my friend came here after skating for 7 hours and we were HUNGRY. We both got ramen and nothing else. My friend really enjoyed her ramen. We both devoured it. I literally ate my ramen in like 5 bites. Not a big fan of the Charsiu pork cus I really don't like the big chunk of fat but I just ate it for protein. I got the underbelly ramen with spicy miso which I think was recommended by our host. We just needed a quick bite but I'd come back to try something other than ramen. The vibes inside was giving Tokyo after dark. It's kinda small inside but they have outdoor seating and I thought it was hilarious that they exited out the window to serve the food LOL

Came here for a lunch date with my boyfriend. The restaurant is very cool, but also very small. We sat upstairs in the loft area and the seating is very snug. You order at a register and sit yourself, food comes out very quickly. We ordered the underbelly ramen, chicken confit ramen, and a side order of kimchi. The kimchi is standard, and the ramen itself was good. I wish the broth was a bit more flavorful, but it's not bad considering the prices. If you add a bunch of toppings, it could easily add up pretty quick. Overall, not bad if you're in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go again.

I loved the creativity of the dishes! For instance, I've never had a adobo in my ramen before. It was fun to try, and while I liked the savory-ness of it, I think perhaps it was a bit too heavy for me. The vibe of the restaurant is interesting, but in a good way! For instance, the bathroom gives Dave bar with graffiti, but also has nice amenities like a bad day, and a hand dryer attached directly to the faucet. It seems like a fun night time vibe! Service was nice and seemed pretty chill.

Really cool place and the ambience is super fun! The chashu slices were way thicker than any other chashu I've had in typical Ramen, but was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to eat and didn't feel too fatty. You have to lineup outside to pay first before you can sit down, but the service was really fast and everybody was super friendly.

I had a fantastic time eating at Underbelly! The ramen was delicious and relatively cheap for the portion size and protein option ($13). There is a spiral staircase for additional seating upstairs and the music was nice.

This is the BEST ramen spot to stop by, especially after a long flight. 8 minutes away from the airport! There are no parking lots, so please plan accordingly. You will be driving in San Diego downtown near Little Italy, where parking is limited, and parking meters are available. The underbelly ramen was $14 that consists of tonkotsu broth, soft-boiled egg, chashu belly, & adobo pulled pork + corn add-on. The drinks I tried were the $11 whisky highball made from toki, sparkling water, & lemon essence + the $12 calpikachu made from peach nectar, calpico, lemon, & vodka. 10/10 on the food. 10/10 on the drinks. Once you walk in, you order at the cash register & they will give you a # & ask where you prefer to sit. There are seats inside the restaurant, but if it's fully booked, there are available seats outside. Since San Diego has the best weather, sitting outside was lovely even during dinner hours. I would definitely come back anytime I visit this city.

Ramen was average compare to what else is available in sd. Inside is very nicely decorated but super small, felt super claustrophobic in there especially sitting up stairs. The food came out super fast tho and service was quick. The Bao buns there were also average. Staff were super friendly.

This place was super cool and laid back, very cool atmosphere and great lounge areas, we sat upstairs which over looked the whole restaurant. The food was good, beef gyoza was a hit especially with the sauce. The Belly of the Beast ramen was alright, the oxtail was really made the dish, just felt the broth didn't have a lot of flavor unfortunately. The drink was great, nice whiskey fizz kind of vibe! Overall was a nice quick stop in for a quick meal, will be back if ever craving ramen again!

Am i able to order to-go upfront?

You order at the front for takeout and dine-in.

Can you make a reservation? Or is it first come first serve?

    It's 1st come for serve

Is there an age restriction? Aka, can I come with my ramen obsessed kids!!?

Doesn't hurt to call the store and ask. In my opinion, considering it's a ramen shop, I see no issue bringing kids to said ramen shop. They do serve non-alcoholic beverages too. I'm sure your kids will definitely enjoy the ramen there. Their ramen…

Can you sit a party of 11?

You could definitely try, they try to accommodate to everyone. The seating option for 11 would most definitely be outside on their side patios though.

    Do you take Reservations?

They do not take reservations, it's first come first serve, order at the counter and they seat you afterwards

    Is it loud /noisy inside?

It is a bit loud with th music playing and all the conversations going on. This place is not the place for a quite meal. However, it is the place for some good ramen. Hope this helps.

    Is parking available?

Only street parking around the area I believe

Are there gluten free noodle options here?

Yes, there's a farmer vegan style one as well as gluten free

    Walk ins allowed.?

    Yes

    Do they accept Apple Pay?

    Yes. They most certainly do!

Are there any spicy ramen options?

    Absolutely. Ask for the bomb

Can you accommodate someone with celiac's disease who is very sensitive to gluten?

People do bring children in, however we are set up for adults. We do not have high chairs or a kids menu. 90's hip hop music is playing throughout the day. We are a small restaurant and a very busy one. Please check out our website and…

Is there added msg aka monisodium glutamate in food?

    No they don't

Have any gluten free options available?

We offer a potato starch based gluten free ramen noodle. Many of our products are marinated or contain a soy sauce which does contain gluten, but any of our knowledgeable bartenders would be happy to answer any questions regarding food allergies.

Are there gluten free ramen options?

    Yes!

Why would you put profanity on your walls? We were about to go in there and turned around. Sad that you all think thats cool but its truly lame.

They're obviously trying to attract your opposite, someone who thinks it's trendy. If you think it's "truly lame" that's fine but try to remember that's just your opinion, not a fact.

Do I need to pay tips here?

As with most facilities tips aren't required but are appreciated. Most serving jobs don't pay that much so it's always nice to tip something even a dollar if you're tight on money.

A normal meal. A casual San Diego ramen situation. Incorrect. What actually happened was that my child experienced a culinary event so powerful it rearranged her internal belief system. She took one bite and immediately declared it her "favorite meal ever" and "the best sushi on earth," which is impressive because those are two separate categories of food, but honestly I respect the conviction. At that moment, she became a tiny ramen prophet. A noodle evangelist. A sushi sommelier of chaos. I was no longer her father. I was merely the adult with a wallet and transportation. The ramen was fantastic. The sushi was fresh. The whole place had that magical "we actually care about what we are doing" energy, which is increasingly rare in a world held together by parking apps and spiritual fatigue. Then, as if the first visit had not already altered the timeline, my daughter made me go back the next day. Not requested. Not suggested. Made. There was no negotiation. She had tasted the mountain and demanded we return to the temple. So we did. And it was still excellent. BESHOCK is now officially part of our family lore. Somewhere between "remember that time we saw the ocean" and "remember when your daughter discovered ramen and briefly became a food critic possessed by a joyful sea dragon." Highly recommend. Bring your children only if you are emotionally prepared for them to ask to come back immediately.

After finishing the entertaining and riveting apocalyptic movie, we weren't sure where we were going to eat for dinner because our first restaurant choice Ramen Nagi closed at 9pm. My son's pahtner mentioned that the Ramen Nagi in San Jose had a last seating of 9pm, so we walked briskly to the restaurant and I learned that as long as you're in line before the closing time of 9pm, you'll get served. Three of the four members in our party talked glowingly about Ramen Nagi, so I was excited to grub here for the first time. After eating their Original King ramen, the chicken karaage, the gyoza, and receiving quality customer service, I wholeheartedly concur with my family's positive reviews and understand now why the restaurant was packed at closing time and why Ramen Nagi is highly rated with 4.4 stars and 738 reviews. Ramen Nagi is located within the shops of the University Towne Center (UTC) La Jolla mall. The restaurant is located towards the west end of the mall where you'll find Raised by Wolves, new spot Chef Fei, it's across from Katsuya Ko and Alo, and it's next door to Van Leeuwen Ice Cream. Parking is paid parking at the mall, but the first hour is free. There's bright indoor seating and minimally lit umbrella covered outdoor seating. Being the foodie that I am, I prefer indoor seating, so that the lighting would be conducive to seeing the food and taking pics. Look for the banners with Japanese verbiage and a large red lantern in front of Ramen Nagi. Adjacent to the outdoor seating, there's a water feature that gives off relaxing vibes. The customer service from all of the staff we interacted with was outstanding and is probably why it's such a popular eatery. To be completely transparent, I'm not a fan of having to make my food selections on the provided sheet of paper while waiting in line. I don't know if that's normal SOP and maybe it was because we were one of the last diners and they just wanted to speed along the process. I'd rather take my time, peruse their menu, and order what I desire. Luckily for me, my Pahtner had eaten at Ramen Nagi, so I just trusted her choices with a personalized deviation. What I ordered, through my wife's recommendations, was the following: Original King ramen flavor, normal strength of salt, normal richness in oil, normal garlic, chashu pork, green onions for vegetable, #4 for my spiciness, normal thin noodles, tamago (egg), and for appetizers, chicken karaage and gyoza. I felt rushed to pick my selections. For my spice level, #4 made me sweat, so be cautious when choosing spiciness unless you can handle a lot of spice. I really enjoyed the taste of the broth and the components I chose, but the chashu was not as tender as I would have liked. The ramen was a satisfying bowl that I consumed delightfully. Make sure to order both the chicken karaage and gyoza. The karaage was succulent, tasty, and would have eaten well with white rice. The gyoza was unique as it came out not looking like the dumplings I'm accustomed to. It came out flat and covered in a crunchy texture. That too was memorable and yummy. My family and I had quality time enjoying The Dog Stars and dining at Ramen Nagi. I understand now why my family recommended eating here and now I recommend everyone try out this delish ramen restaurant.

We went with the black garlic ramen (that…read moretonkotsu mayu broth is no joke with that deep, rich, and almost squid ink from the burnt garlic oil) topped with a perfectly jammy soft-boiled egg, tender chashu, wood ear mushroom, scallions, and crispy garlic bits. The broth had that long-simmered pork bone depth without being overly heavy, and the garlic oil gave it a smoky, almost umami-bomb finish plus a touch of seafood with that 燻 and 鮮. We also grabbed an extra chashu plate on the side which melts in our mouth, lightly charred at the edges. The space has a fun, energetic izakaya vibe exposed brick, big fabric noren banners hanging from the ceiling (the "Universal Noodle Creator" branding is a nice touch), and an open kitchen where you can watch the cooks in action. It gets loud and communal, which made for a lively date night rather than a quiet one good to know going in. Service was quick, water and shichimi/pepper grinders were on the table, and the seating (bench-style, close quarters) has the casual ramen-shop energy. It's just missing Naruto walking into this shop. If you like bold, funky, garlicky tonkotsu broths, this is a must-try. Will be back for the other flavors on the wall menu. This place doesn't do take out but takes your order as you wait in line. You can order the takeout after you sit and pack the food yourself.

My bf got the tan tan and as someone who gets tan tan everywhere he goes for ramen, he said it was slightly above average, 7/10. I got the tsukemen dipping ramen with dashi shoyu broth. If I went I may try something different but overall a solid place for ramen.
