We started with the scallion pancake which came with 8 piece (4 pieces stacked on top) which was a really good deal. Flavorwise they were good but I wish texturally they were more crispy. The Shanghai juicy dumplings were really good and the meat was very flavorful. Lastly, the Spicy Beef Brisket Noodle Soup was the star of the show. We visited over the weekend. The space is quite large and was relatively empty, with just a few other tables seated. The service was efficient; our orders were taken right away, water was served, and the food came out quickly. We tried the spicy wontons after seeing reviews comparing them to Din Tai Fung's. Since those are a personal favorite, I was skeptical, but the flavor was surprisingly close. The sauce is slightly sweeter and not a 1:1, but it is delicious and offered at a great price point. We also ordered the spicy beef brisket noodle soup with hand-pulled noodles. It was a solid, filling meal with a flavorful broth and a generous amount of brisket. Our first night in San Diego and my youngest son wanted asian food and he found this place during his search. We decided to give it a try and see how it is. When we walked in, we were greeted and seated right away. The place was very well lit and there were tables set for 4 people but from the layout, they can combines tables for bigger groups. There was a lot of room/space inside the restaurant. There are soy sauce, vinegar, and chili already at the table. We wanted to try some of the different food on the menu so we did family style order and shared. We ordered the soup dumpling and the spicy wonton to start off. The soup dumpling was similar to other places and I used the chili oil from the wonton to give it a spicier flavor. The chili wonton was also good. The wonton was not hard and the wrap was thin which was the way I like them. We ordered the beef wrap as well. The beef was very thin and there were a lot of greens. It says that there were cucumber, cilantro, and green onion but the green tasted and looked more like chives. The veggie was so empowering that it took away the flavor from the beef and made it very difficult to finish. I would skip this dish or they need to really limit the greens to balance the flavor and texture. This place was known for their hand pulled noodles so of course we had to get that and opted for the bone broth. The hand noodle was delicious. It was made perfectly and was not very chewy. The bone broth was a little bland. Folks might complain about that but I sometimes prefer the broth not to be overpowering so I can adjust to my taste which was I did with this broth. I mixed of the some chili and soy sauce that was at the table and put it in the broth. After mixing the condiments in, the broth had the flavor to my liking. My kids wanted to get fried rice to go so they can have a late night snack at the hotel in case they got hungry later. They ordered the combination and asked for no veggies. They really liked the fried rice and I can see why. The fried rice was not hard and was not mushy either. It was cooked at a good texture and had enough flavor where the seafood flavor did not overpower the poultry or meat. It was also not that bland where you need to add soy sauce or chili to enhance the flavor. Overall, the place was ok but if you want pulled noodle or like fried rice, you can give it a try. I would skip the beef wrap. While we were there, we noticed a couple showed up and were seated but the server didn't come to get their order after they were seated for some time. This was consistent to what others in the Yelp reviews have mentioned. When the couple waved someone to take their order, they were given a complimentary cucumber appetizer dish. I'd give this place a 3.5 if Yelp allowed it. We came to Noodle & Bun with high expectations after reading all the rave reviews, but unfortunately, we left pretty disappointed. I actually had to add about half a jar of the chili sauce from the table just to try and get some heat and flavor into the broth. My partner had the Veggie Chow Mein and ran into the same issue, needing to add a lot of soy sauce and chili oil just to give it some taste. We also shared the Veggie Spring Rolls, which were cooked nicely--light golden brown and very crispy--but again, they just lacked much flavor. I know I might be the outlier with my review, and maybe we just caught the kitchen on an off day. Like I said, the ingredients are fresh, but the dishes just needed a lot of help. A quick heads-up about the location: I'd strongly recommend eating inside rather than sitting at their outdoor tables. It's not that the entire Gaslamp area has this issue, but just where they are located on the street, there is a large homeless presence nearby and, unfortunately, a pretty strong smell of urine. On the bright side, the service was very attentive for this type of casual restaurant. They constantly kept our waters refilled and brought extra napkins without us even having to ask. I'm unsure whether the attentiveness was just a hustle to get people in and out quickly or because they genuinely wanted us to enjoy ourselves, but it was great either way. There is plenty of table seating and the restaurant is a large size for many guests. Spicy Wontons (3/5): I found myself eating the wontons with the soup because they were overly salty while the noodles and broth were more on the bland end. Their wontons are a smaller shape from what I've seen, but are very filling, especially if you order your own noodles. Spicy Beef Noodle Soup (3.5/5): The beef was so tender and soft! They give you a lot of meat for the bowl, but I didn't think the broth was spicy. Luzhou Beef Noodle (4/5):This style broth is a clear base broth and seemed to be flavored by many herbs and spices. It is reminiscent of the bone soup you can choose for hotpot. Overall I like the soup and noodle combination more than the spicy noodles. This place was prettty busy on a Thursday evening. There was one main server who was in charge of almost all the tables. There was another server who appeared to be in training and required some additional reminders for items we requested for (e.g. extra bowls, utensils). What we ordered - - Soup dumplings (4/5): This was good but not the best soup dumpling I've had. Missing a bit of the umami flavor. - Spicy beef noodle soup (5/5): OMG this reminds me of the beef noodle soups back in NYC. The noodles were freshly made and you can see them through the clear windows. We opted for the knife shaved noodles and it was perfectly chewy, soaking up all the delicious broth. - Spicy wontons (4/5): The spicy sauce in it was more tangy than spicy and wished there was more fillings in the wontons. - Beef wrap (5/5): Solid beef wrap. The beef was tender and flavorful paired with the hoisin sauce. The only recommendation is probably for them to remove the cilantro inside, for the cilantro aversion folks (like myself lol) Overall I'll definitely be back! I was recommended Noodle & Bun by a friend who said it was super busy and popular. Luckily a group of 4 of us headed in around 5pm on a Wednesday as our last stop before heading to the airport and were seated immediately. It was a spacious restaurant with lots of seating but I can see how it can become very packed! By the time we left there was a huge line outside! Everyone was so nice and they didn't mind that we had all of our luggage with us. We had some trouble deciding what to get and they gave us plenty of time and suggestions. They explained that all the noodles are hand made to order and there is a window where you can see the chefs preparing the fresh noodles. They also encourage you to take videos and share! We ended up ordering the cucumber salad, soup dumplings, scallion pancakes, Lan zhou noodle soup with hand pulled noodles and combo special chow mein with knife shaved noodles. My favorite had to be the chow mein. It had great flavor, lots of protein and veggies, and I really enjoyed the texture of the noodles. The lan zhou noodle soup was new to me and had an enjoyable peppery but mild broth. The cucumber salad was super refreshing and the perfect starter. One of the best fresh noodle options in San Diego and hands down the best Asian food in the area. We were quickly seated during lunch. Service was quick and attentive. Food came out within 10 min of ordering which was great for lunch time. You can watch your noodles being made fresh which is super fun. I really enjoyed the beef noodle soup with wide noodles.
