Great place to have a pull list. The staff is very friendly and ready to help you out. They are very easy to talk to about pop culture things. Really organized and the guy working there was chill and very helpful. Helped me get my first comic book series.

I've been coming here since I think 2018 when I used to work at the Hospital a couple miles down the street. When covid hit, I had to move to San Bernardino County cuz cost of living in OC got waaaaay too bad. However, I've been happy with this place so I still go. Susan is a great owner to me. She makes herself available by business email which she is great about checking and replying to (It's on the business card on the counter at the shop) and you just tell her what you wish to order and she will order it and not only will she make sure it gets there for you timely but also that it doesn't come damaged before I drop by to pay and pick it up. Now that I'm in my 30s, I don't have the patience to buy individual comics so I just buy trade paperbacks when story arcs are complete so it's all in one graphic novel. Star Trek is a franchise I tend to read these days more than marvel and she makes sure she orders whatever comes from IDW even before I ask nowadays because I have been such a reliable customer when it comes to that. When I ask her to order and it comes, I always pick up my complete order within a week (I'd pick it up sooner but I live over 30mi away now). Now I think everyone is a tad harsh on Rene. He's actually a good guy. Granted, he's not a very extroverted guy on the outside but he's a cool dude. I think if you're more outgoing and you try to engage a guy like him, he's not the type to respond in kind. And if you press him like some of the people who complain about him have, yeah you're probably gonna force a very insensitive sounding answer out of him. Not excusing that but that could've been avoided too. That's just the type of dude he is and I think I understand how to approach people like that. I wouldn't say I have a pull list because I'm quite an easy customer. I ask Susan to order whatever. She lets me know when it's in. Then when i come in, they're ready. If Rene's there, he knows to get it, rings me up, and I leave to go on my way. I have never had a problem with him. I totally respect that small talk isn't exactly his thing so I think he's not bad at all. People need to realize there are other personality types than their own sometimes and not be so sensitive. Believe me, I am a sensitive type myself but I've never been rubbed the wrong way by him. Now, since these days I have a very specific taste when it comes to comic theme and types of comics, I don't go around perusing through the shelves and boxes but the store seems to have a pretty good sized selection, given that it's not a really big store. There's two separate rooms in the back. One for back issues of older individual comics and the other is a room set up to rent for those who don't have their own space and equipment for podcasts which is pretty clever in principle actually. I don't know if they have many events like a lot of comic book shops tend to like some will have big sales or even certain artists of certain characters or even strive bigger by getting certain actors who used to be on comic or fantasy based tv shows in the past, maybe they do not certain. Susan is great she seems like a hip regular lady but she understands nerds very well. To me, she understands our personas. She understands what they look for in a place like hers, and she's been nothing but awesome to me. Treats me with such consideration and respect. I could easily have found a place near me because there are at least 3 within a 15-20mi drive from where I live now, but I wouldn't stick to getting any physical copies of what I order from them if I didn't think they were worth it. Only thing that really sucks is it's in the heart of downtown Whittier so it's a pain in the neck to find a spot right in front of the store. The spots are usually always taken no matter what time of the day or day of the week I go so normally i have to park in the next street then walk over there from that place. Anyway, thank you Susan for taking such great care of me for the past six years and still going. You're amazing. I really thought I already typed a review of your place. I usually order my comics online but I wanted to start supporting local small businesses. Well this place reminded me why I order online. My pull list was always missing comics. The guy in the front is so serious and he gives me unfriendly vibes. I feel awkward being there. I feel like he just wants me to leave. The older comics are extremely stuck together inside some heavy boxes that it makes it difficult to search for the ones I need. The books are wrapped in plastic. They also have a small selection. I'm going to try a different comic book store located in Fullerton. Hopefully I get better service.! read more

This is my first year collecting comics, I decided to support local business instead of ordering my comics online. Sadly today I cancelled my pull list. The attendant Rene forgot a number of items on my list multiple times, to my count seven times and six times in a row. When I asked the first time he chalked it up to "human error" I gave him the benefit of the doubt but after having to get items off the rack 6 times in a row that should have been pulled I asked again "why" I got no apology, no explanation just the same "human error" excuse. Sorry bud that is called negligence. Sue the store owner is very friendly and approachable but unfortunately Rene's customer service leaves a lot to be desired. In my final visit I said "I want to give you my business but my needs aren't being met why should I stay?" all I got was "it's up to you". True enough i'll take my business elsewhere read more

Just found out about it , i have two boys 8 & 11 year old they LOVE it and the staff is so helpful and knowledgeable about comics basically they speak my boys language lol& are very patient with my boys , i grew up in whittier so bringing my boys to uptown whittier is Full circle , they have great prices and dont hike up the price !Will be coming here again and again ! By far the worst comic store I've been to, the guy seems to be extremely bothered that people enter his store. gathered about 45-50 dollars worth of comics, the guy refused to take my 100$ didn't even look in the register just said "sorry can't break it". Asked for a specific comic, didn't even try to help, kept his head down and said if you don't see it we don't have it. Do not go to this comic store go to KOBRA comics just a mile from this place w way better service. read more

The shop has a decent selection and has access to older comics you may have missed. However, staff is a bit artificial. This does not get better with being a regular as my pull list was often missing comics that were unrecoverable once they were out after a week or so, and no apology or assistance was helped regarding this issue. Adding to your pull list resulted in reminding the gentleman staff in front as he would not put your comics on the list unless he was reminded multiple times. Could have a much better experience if staff was more willing to help with pride and care! read more

I truly enjoy coming to Undercity Comics to get my comic books and look around at the latest statues. Great location and fun items to check out. I also love looking at the back issues of comics, they have plenty to choose from. I'm browsing and looking at a shrink wrapped hardcover book of art. There's like 5 of them and they're all shrink wrapped. Me: Excuse me. Do you have a reading copy? Counter Lady: No. Me: So I'm supposed to buy it from looking at the cover? Counter Lady: I'm supposed to have a reading copy of every book I sell? Me: How am I supposed to know if I want to buy the art in the ART BOOK if I can't see the art? Counter Lady: Go online and look. Me: Okay, thanks. I guess I'll go buy the book online too. What a great little comic shop located in the heart of Uptown Whittier. It is a little hidden as it is not directly on Greenleaf, but it is very visible when you are going North or South on Greenleaf. If you find the Rocky Cola Cafe then you are in the right spot. Upon walking inside I noticed how clean and well organized the store was. I was quickly greeted the employees and asked if I needed any help finding something in particular. I do not have much knowledge when it comes to comics or graphic novels so I was a little lost and trying to find my footing. One of the walls is covered from head to toe in new comics that had just came out that week. It simply amazed me how many comics were created on a weekly basis. The middle of the store has all the POP characters you can think of along with some other type of figurines. In the back of the store you will find a room with single comics and most of their back issues. These are pretty well organized and are easy to find whatever you may be looking for. You can also find some other misc items in that room such as posters, and other comic related items. One cool thing about Undercity is that they run their own comic podcast inside of the store. In the second backroom you can see the sweet set up that they have that includes about 4 or 5 mics and the whole shebang. They def made a fan in me and I will be back for the Halloween Comic Fest! read more

This is the best comic book shop within a 20 mile radius hands down...They don't overcharge when a book gets hot. Spec books...COVER PRICE. As a matter of fact even if a book heats up they still sell it for cover price (AMAZING). Every book regardless if it's a comic, TPB, or hardcover comes in a bag and board at no extra charge! They offer a pull list that comes with a discount at NO CHARGE unlike some comic shops that have an annual fee. They have a lot of cool merchandise. They have a back issue room where you can dig through a lot of long boxes and find your treasure at cover price!They offer a cool podcast room that you can rent by the hour. The shop is located in Uptown Whittier which is a very cool place. But most importantly they have a great staff, never rude, always friendly. I haven't read a comic in 25 years. I think the last one I bought was the death of superman. I remember that awesome feeling of getting a new book and biking home as quick as I could to read it. When my son wanted to start reading comic books I couldn't wait for him to feel that same excitement! I took him to Undercity and immediately I felt like a kid again. The thing is though, everything has changed! Offshoots and one offs abound, and I had no idea where to start when it came to finding an age appropriate book for him. The owner of the store was AMAZING!! He stopped and talked with my son to discover his interests. He showed him the different types of books, and made recommendations. All in all, spent probably a half hour with us making sure we found the perfect first book for my son. I know nothing of what prices should be. I don't have a laundry list of comic book stores to compare to. My review on the store, quite honestly, is ignorant. However, the personal service we were shown and the way my son and I felt leaving the store is something that cannot be bought! I cannot wait to return! read more

Cons: Condescending staff, can't read stuff before you buy it because everything is locked up/packaged (and they yell at you if you open it). Small selection. Mostly toys. I've been going to the original shop that was located on First and Leffingwell since 2011 until it closed, and it always, always had a family atmosphere. The uptown shop opened in 2014 and I had been a regular at it for a short duration, and then had stopped going due to life and responsibilities. Recently starting popping back in again, and it's exactly the same way I left which is a great thing. Walking back in was like meeting an old friend again. Nothing has changed, the family atmosphere is still there, comics are bagged and boarded, which is amazing. Best customer service you can possibly ask for. This will always be my comic shop to go to, no matter what. And it should be yours as well. read more

Who knew Comic Book stores were still around? Located in Uptown Whittier. Street or lot parking. Undercity Comics is a no-frills kind of place. Comics and a few specialized figurines is what they sell. The comics have no mark up, of any kind! At first I thought the price tag was missing, but no, they sell it for the original marked price. I really appreciated that! Also, they have a room for their Podcast station and offer the room for rent, should anyone else need a space for their Podcasts, which I thought was cool! I like "Betty and Veronica" comic books. I chose the one I wanted, made my quick purchase and skipped along...new comic book in hand like I did back when I was in the 4th grade. :-D read more

As someone who has visited nearly every comic book shop in the area, this one is in a class of it's own. It's small on the inside, but the extra space isn't needed when they've got everything you need. One wall is lined with new releases, the opposite holds trades and collections, and the center floor space is used as displays for games and vinyl figurines. There are two back rooms: one is used for magic and tcg accessories while the other is reserved for Undercity's weekly podcasts. I came into the shop early in the week towards the evening and happened to catch the guys hosting their podcast in the back room and it was cool to watch. The employee they had on duty (I believe his name is Sam?) was extremely helpful and was more than willing to answer my questions. As a female fan of the geek world, it's very important for the vibe to be just right when I enter shops like this. The employee was extremely professional and super welcoming, which is not how employees at comic shops usually are to women. So I was really pleased by the customer service. There are no tables for games and they do not sell mtg or yugioh singles at this location. But if it's comics that you want, this place is exactly what you're looking for. read more

Ever since their sister store closed and the merchandise consolidated into the uptown Whittier shop, things have changed. And not for the better. Twice now I haven't been able to find the current issue of my favorite comic (and I'm shopping for it within a couple days of its release). And the customer service has dropped from superior to subpar. Hate to say it but this casual comic collector is looking for a new store. read more

Diverse collection of graphic novels, a few really nice statues, a few long boxes full of $1 issues as well as some sorted 80's-90's fairly priced issues. Attendants were very nice. This is my 3rd or forth trip to Undercity Comics and felt I should finally write a review. This location is extremely convenient to anyone visiting uptown Whittier. I live close by so when I need to see a comic in person this place should fit the bill. Unfortunately, all their Comics are sealed. How do you know if you want to buy a book without looking inside it? I understand wear and tear and I do appreciate the bag and board but their policy stinks. I had to ask to see a Batman Shadow #1. At first the store employee wasn't going to let me hold it myself to look through it. I assured her that I would be more careful than even she was. I pointed out to her she didn't take the tape off the bag before she took the comic out. As a teenager 20 plus years ago I'd buy 30-50 books a week. The reason I bought so many was after opening 20 or 30 comics I'd probably want to buy them all. Unfortunately for my parents (and now my wife), I did buy them all. Have a display comic (reader) for each new book. Comic books are for reading. The owner here doesn't seem to know or appreciate that. read more

Prices are fair compared to Geeks, comics are displayed neatly and open to view better, the staff are super cool, especially that one guy I bought an MLP comic from a long time ago ((didn't catch his name, sorry!!)) , and the merchandise is simply the coolest, especially all the Doctor Who stuff! I always keep forgetting to save my money for that Doctor Who scarf, but I did buy a mug. The only thing that brings me down are the posters, I wish there were more! This place is great. I am not a comic person but my 9yr old was looking for an obscure comic book. Unfortunately they did not have the book in stock but the employee behind the register was super helpful going out of his way to check the internet to find when the book was released and where we might be able to find it. Without a doubt one of "The best independently run comic book shops." Love the atmosphere of it being a free open loving comic store. Its part of the old mystic of being able to Nerd or Geek out and nerd rage over aspects of comics, life, politics and just what your going through within the realm fantasy & comics. Sucking in the atmosphere is indeed home. It literally feels like your favorite hangout spot. The best work crew is also the heartbeat of the store. Really cool spot for comic books in Uptown. I mostly read Image comics which they carry unlike another comic book spot in uptown which I won't bother to name. Everyone is pretty cool and happy to help. They also have a podcast recording studio here that you can rent out for some reasonable sounding prices. The one drawback is that they don't seem to stock up too much on certain comics so if you don't go early Wednesday you might miss out. They do have a cool program where they'll pull up to 5 comics for you and hold them for 2 days so that can be convenient and this is definitely a place worthy of your business so check it out. read more
